I've given up on waiting for the official release of gmail's dark mode. Luckily it is a very easy process to turn dark mode on in the existing app.
You will need a file program that can access the root files. Something like Root Explorer.
1) Open /data/data/com.google.android.gm/shared_prefs/FlagPrefs.xml with the text editor option and look for
Code:
boolean name="DarkThemeSupport__dark_theme_support" value="false"
2) Change it to
Code:
boolean name="DarkThemeSupport__dark_theme_support" value="true"
3) Save and exit
4) Close Gmail and remove from recent apps.
5) Restart gmail. You should now have the "Theme" option located under Settings/General Settings/Theme. Choose "Dark" or "System default" if your main theme is set to dark mode.
6) Enjoy dark gmail in all it's glory.
Please note - this mod will not survive an app update. So if you update the app via the Play Store and the new version does not have dark mode, you will need to redo this mod.
Thank you finding this. Unfortunately it is not working for me. I'm running Android 9 (DU) and have Gmail 2019.09.15.270135155.

I'm not surprised that it isn't working on Android 9. Dark mode is an Android 10 feature. So even though this mode turns the dark mode support on for Gmail, if the underlying OS doesn't support it, then it obviously doesn't work.

My mistake. I assumed that Gmail dark mode worked on pie like dark mode for other Google apps does.

I got dark mode for Instagram on my Nokia 7 Plus. Anybody else who has received dark mode for Instagram? I'm quite surprised that I have received this while OnePlus hasn't received the Dark mode for Instagram yet.

Try Signing up for Instagram Beta testing by searching on google for "Instagram Beta Tester".
After that, enable the Dark mode in settings under theme. Should work.
Hey, I've the dark mode too.
But I don't like it.
How can I change it back to normal?
I checked the normal Settings / Display and the App itself.
Google Photos and the searchbar at the homescreen is also black.
Does anybody have a hint for me?
Thank you.

You have to go on system> advanced> developer options> night mode: Always off. Then you will have Instagram, Play store e Google Photos back in white theme
Hey, I have the same on my Nokia 6 2017.
The play store and Instagram are set on dark mode. That litterally came out of nowhere... Haha.
Thanks for your lightings
Hi, my question is a strange one actually. As of now, my instagram and play store apps are in dark mode but as far as I know Mate 20 Lite doesn't have a dark mode feature at the moment. I didn't turn anything on or off. It just happened by itself. Do anyone have any explanation for this or can I find a way to switch it on/off whenever I want?
Install the Dark Mode app from Play Store and select the mode that you want.

Happened to me too, I think it's just some bug of gboard. Go on apkmirror and download the lastest beta version of gboard, install it, then try enable/disable dark theme and see if it works.
It fixed it for me
thx for the advise.
It's so annoying that google can't even work out such little things for their own products. Faceunlock still doesn't work for me with this patch, at least they send a replacement device pretty quickly.

The face unlock bug can be fixed by resetting the device from the settings menu, there's no need to replace the phone as it's just a software bug.
Just make sure to backup what you need because it wipes eveything you have on your phone.

Nothing to set, it does that automatically.
When you first flash the march update, the gboard version probably has a bug that keeps it on light theme even with dark mode active.
Once you install a newer version, for example from apkmirror, it should fix this and follow the system theme again, no need to set it manually.

I have version 9.1.6.29, I think there is no way to select two specific themes, it automatically switches between the "Google blue light" and "Google blue dark", the ones with the classic Pixel blue color in the preview
You can try the dark mode fix:
https://mobilesyrup.com/2020/01/04/force-gboard-follow-android-system-dark-mode-toggle-2/
Basically, create a keyboard theme then delete it so you're back on the default. Toggling dark mode off and on to test if it works.
If it doesn't, remember that Gboard during the day time default theme, does match the accent color set in the OS theme.

Hello, I've been trying to figure this out for quite some time. I've tried about every version of the Google app including the latest beta and it's the same every single time. it should be noted the Google app does in fact have dark mode and the Google app does go into dark mode but Google Assistant stays in light mode when I put the Google app in dark mode. Just wondering if anybody at all has any kind of resolution to this?
Oh, forgot to mention I'm on Android 9.0 pie MR3
Hi everyone, I had a Realme X2 before, and under "Dark mode for third-party apps" I saw all my apps and was enable to enable dark mode for each of them. This worked great for most apps.
But on my new Realme 8 Pro, I only see a handful of apps listed in this menu. Most of my apps are not shown there and I cannot turn dark mode on there.
The only way I found was to enable "force dark mode override" in developer settings but this then affects all apps and I can't select which, and it is cleared on reboot...
What am I missing here? Why are most apps not listed in this menu in the 8 Pro when they were all there on the X2?
I'm happy for any hint - thank you!

i can only see 3 app, but it's ok because the other apps have a dark mode in their settings.
In that list, incompatible apps or apps that already have a dark mode setting, are not listed
Thank you for your answer, but the thing is, on my old phone, the Realme X2, almost all apps were listed there. And most of the missing ones don't have a dark mode, that's why I'm asking this question. I'm not sure in what way they could be "incompatible" because again on my old phone I was using the system dark mode for most of them and it worked great (for example Amazon Shopping, Airbnb, BAWAG PSK,...)
