anyone have battery problems with android 7 battery life? - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i installed android 7 on a nook hd (7") and ran it for about 2.5 months. As soon as I installed it I could feel the battery area was warm to very warm. It continued to be like that for the 2 and a half months I had it on there.
With android 7, I would get about a day of use off a full charge. I could watch the battery % drop as soon as it was unplugged from the charger. I kept the wireless off and airplane mode enabled most of the time to try to get more life. I could get about 2 hours if surfing the web on wifi.
finally it started jumping the brightness to 100% and wouldn't let me adjust it downward (only happened on certain web pages - still worked fine for reading books, but I had to reboot and reset the brightness every time.
I uninstalled android 7 and went back to stock nook 2.2.1 and my problems vanished. Battery life is back, it took me about 2 hrs to download and reinstall 2.2.1 and I had the nook on and wireless enabled the whole time and the battery never got hot and battery is still at 97%. With android 7 I'd be in 60's by now if not 40's.
I liked being able to install Brave browser and a couple apps, but I hated the android 7 keyboard, and the whole thing was sluggish, so I'd wind up tapping and retapping and getting 2 or 3 extra tabs opened that I didn't really want...
I'm gonna run stock for a week or so and make sure everything is fine and then try CM11 and see if will run better.
I really like the nook for reading books I've got a Kindle oasis and I like the nook better. and the 9" hd+ is great for reading .pdf manuals while working on things without having to have a laptop around.
only wish there was a way to strip the google out of the Nook. android isn't an operating system, its a retailing app...
anybody got a version of android they like that isn't so hard on the battery and not so sluggish???

[Q] Battery life from 100% charge.

Curious I am, what is everyone's experiences with battery life on their NC using CM7 or any other flavor of root? I charged to 100% and have used it moderately, maybe 2 or 3 hours of constant use spread out over 1d 25min and some odd seconds and I'm at 32% battery. This use includes surfing, browsing fliki HD, and email.
Does that sound about right, better, or worse? Don't get me wrong, I am not expecting 3 days worth of battery life with heavy use, but as I've had my NC less than a week, I'm just curious as to what to expect as far as battery life.
Thanks!
Signed,
In Living Color
Sounds about right, what version of cm7? Ive been moderatley using it for the past 2 days, streaming pandora, playing angry birds rio, and facebooking.
What about a OC?
lol no lie my NC is at 32% battery to
Hrm. Either 31, or 32 I forget which. No, no OC, haven't found a need for it yet. And yeah, did the Pandora thing + Angry Birds as well. Haven't had any issues with my version of CM7 yet, so I figured I'd hold out on updating + installing to internal memory for a 'stable' release. I say 'stable' release only because even though CM7 is in RC's its plenty stable for me.
yea im running the RC and it seems the Battery life has gone way up for me.
Cool, thanks for the insight. Gives me even more to look forward to.
Been running CM7 RC4 with the OC Kernel @ 1.1Ghz off bootable SD and battery life has been very good by my book...now keep in mind, my reference point is my Droid (overclocked to 1.25Ghz), and now my Droid X (overclocked to 1.3 Ghz), both would be down to 30-40% through the course of a typical day). The NC obviously has a bigger battery, but my goal is to root 30 of these and use them as a textbook replacement/tablet pc as a pilot in our school's language art's department. They charge fast so as long as they get a day out of heavy use and can be charge overnight they are worth every penny.
i don't know why, but my nook likes to start apps on its own. Not sure how to do that. there are like a dozen apps open and i am constantly in app killer to save batt.
oh yeah, is there a wway to prevent apps from auo-launching??

Read and learn how Android works.
I'm planning to buy Nook Color very soon, but one thing that stops me atm is battery life.
That's how I plan to use NC:
- games games games, online games included.
- surfing internet.
I thought NC can work off charge for at least 7 hours...

And chances are, once the bugs are worked out of CM7 so that battery drain is corrected and it correctly enters a sleep state, I'm sure it can/will.
Well, I actually meant hours with screen on while playing/surfing net. But yea, sleep mode is essential too.

8-10%/hr running, 2%/hr with the display off if wifi is enabled on CM7. So yes, it easily meets your requirements.
That's exactly what I needed. Thank you.

Not sure if you read what the person below you posted, but I'll just say it here...Android has a built in task manager and using a task killer actually can make your device run slower and battery life much worse. I've had first hand experience with this with my droid.

That wasn't the question he asked- He asked if you could stop something from launching, not how to kill it after it was launched.
CM7 RC4 Battery Life: "Just the facts, ma'am."
I can charge my Nook Color to 100%. Then reboot. Then immediately turn the screen off and let the device lay untouched for 24 hours. After 24 hours of no-touching I find my battery at 67%. I'll note that the wireless connection is not active upon unlocking the screen. It takes maybe 10-20 seconds for the wireless to reconnect. I have never, ever reset my battery statistics.
I don't have much installed on-top of CM7 RC4:
- Adobe Reader
- Google Finance
- Firefox
- Gmail
- Google maps
- NPR News
- Pandora
- Google Reader
- Rockplayer Lite
- Clockwork Mod ROM Manager
- Winamp
- Youtube
If any background process was started on the initial boot, I had nothing to do with it. That is, the process must have started automagically. I do not kill processes or applications. If I suspect something's gone badly then I always reboot to recover.
Editorial: I *-love-* CM7 RC4. For me it's stable, fast, movies play, Youtube works, etc, etc, etc. I likely would have re-gifted my Nook Color if not for CM7. I very much dislike my iPad. A lucky niece or nephew is going to be surprised with their next birthday present. ;-)

I'm on nightly 98 but experience the same thing as you. Battery drains pretty quickly even when it's asleep.

I am on N95, stock kernel, and finally have great battery life. Try using cpuspy and a paid install of system panel to find the cause of your battery drain. I see almost no battery drain when the screen is off and have about 50% deep sleep with an up time of 120 hours.

I upgraded to n100 through Rom Manager, kept the stock kernel instead of using the OC'd kernel. When Rom Manager rebooted I was at 56%, I put it to sleep and have been periodically waking it to check the battery. Two hours later I'm still at 56%! Now since I changed the ROM version and the kernel, I'm not sure which one was to blame, but at this point, I'm leaving well enough alone.
edit:
Question: Say I wanted to go backwards to N95 from N100 --- would I just flash the N95 zip and then the gapps zip like a normal flash? Not that I want to right now because everything is fine, but I was just curious.

[Q] Battery life problems...

I had today all planned out. I was going to flash the Tab with the Overcome ROM but for the past few days I've noticed that my battery life has really not improved at all.
I bought my Tab around 2 weeks ago from someone locally who barely used it - (still had all the wrapping, stickers etc). As soon as I'd charged it, I set the following things up after I reset the device to factory from the security / privacy menu, or whatever its called!
- no 3g, only gsm
- no bluetooth
- brightness get to 10% ish (slider is just between the 'gh' in brightness in the notifications area (not auto brightness)
- no gps
- wifi on
- flash & plugins by request only
- using Dolphin HD browser
- no widgets
- no other programs installed.
With these settings, I get no more than 6hrs of web browsing from 100% charge to to 15%, when it tells me that the battery is getting low. This is just straight web browsing - no video, no sound etc, no flash - i'm just looking at normal websites. Ok, I'm just looking at LOLcats and Things Parents Text etc!!
I've tried this again and again but I never get more than 6hrs, ever.
Can anyone tell me if this is normal - I seem to remember that most of the reviews said that they got 8 to 9hrs just browsing the web and 6 to 7 hrs of video playback!
Finally, is it worth resetting the battery stats? I understand that I have to root the device to do this though..
Any comments / help is most welcome!
Im running Froyo 2.2 with no mods etc, just straight UK rom.

Battery usage under Gingerbread will improve battery life. One more reason to upgrade. I am not so sure about overcome though as there are mixed opinions about battery life on that rom.
The presence of all those stickers, wrappers, etc does not show "newness" of your tab. There is a way you can detect how old your tab is but you have to be rooted to do so....the date of the nvdata file. this is generated the first time the tab is turned on....
I have the GTab on TMobile with Stock 2.2 Froyo Rom and with WiFi On, GPS On (No SIM Card inserted) and I get a full days battery of time. When I pull it off the charger at 7am, I don't have to plug it in until 9:30pm, it's still at like 24% then. Even when I've used my SIM Card in my tab through out the day using Pandora, Maps, Facebook and FourSquare by the end of the day my battery life was at like 18%. With the tab I actually never worried about my battery life or carried my charger with me. With all the android phones I've had, I usually carry my cellphone charger with me when I go out.
Thanks guys,
I've updated to 2.3.3 and to be honest, the battery life seems a little better but not by much! With wifi on and just browsing continually (hey, I have a lot of spare time!) I'm now getting about 6.5hrs, and I mean continually - playing youtube during lunch etc!
Is that good or bad?
most people say you must do battery calibration after flashing and i think 6.5hrs is bad for me.. just for my opinion
Is there an easy way to re-calibrate the battery? Do I have to root the Tab to do it?
If so, where can I get instructions on how to do it?
Many thanks
I'm not sure but the process that I do is to turn off the tab let itcharge to 100% go to recovery then wipe battery stat but I dnt know if you can go to recovery menu if your not rooted

[Q] Stock rooted HD+..is this nornal?

I've purchase and used this to get 'regular' android onto my HD+
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBZtWXYWX7M
I'm really pretty happy with it with the exception of two things.
Strange Wifi behaviour.
The WiFi seems to go off after the screen has been asleep for 10 - 15 mins. As a result, I don't get any emails when the screen is off. This does not happen on my ipad3 or my Nexus 7. Is this normal for this Nook?
Battery consumption.
I'm getting around 6 to 6.5 hrs of battery life with the brightness on 20% or so.
The strange thing is that Wifi and Tablet Idle seem to be consuming far more power than the screen. The attached pix were taken when the screen-on time was around 3 hrs.
On my Nexus 7, the Tablet Idle and Wifi seem to consume far, far less power than the screen. Can anyone suggest what's causing this?
Other than these problems, it's fantastic to use this tablet with stock android (or as close as this version is!). I really feel that it's a very under-rated and frequently over looked. I wouldn't touch it with stock B+N junk on it though!

Losing battery charge when tablet closed.

Anyone know why my TF701T completely loses all its charge, even when fully charged up, when i close the tablet with keyboard still attached?
I can fully charge it, tap the sleep button top left, close the keyboard, and then less than a day later it has lost all charge and then needs to be fully charged up again.
This is getting really frustrating, otherwise its a great tablet.
Android version 4.4.2
Thanks.
Have you tried a reset and see if the problem still exists without any apps on your tablet? I may be a problem with an app draining the battery.
Just started happening to me too

This just started happening to me a couple days ago. I take my tablet to work, it stays in my backpack powered on but not being used. Most days I get home and it's either still at 100% or at least in the high 90s. Two days ago when I got home it was at 18% and yesterday it was 15%. I'm beginning to suspect some app update is killing it. I haven't changed anything else. I don't have a keyboard. Running the latest CromiX 7.03.
This has been happening for at least 6 months, maybe longer.
Haven't tried a full factory reset and reinstall of apps - I was hoping it might be simpler than that.
No other android devices I have excessively drain the battery (Note2 phone, Nexus 7 tablet) - why should this tablet be different?
Have a battery monitor installed for about 2 weeks and no apps stand out having excessive wake locks. (apart from the battery monitor itself, which is to be expected )
Did you use Netflix?
There is a bug with Netflix that it completely drains the battery on the Tablet after it runs. The workaround I use is to reboot the tablet after I am done with Netflix

This has happened to me since I upgraded to 4.4.2. Since I had only just purchased the TF701T it had very few apps on it and I was able to observe some things via teh power and battery stats;
1. When stored in a bag the battery discharged throughout the day going from 100% to 20% in just over 8 hours
2. The TF701T had woken up every 5 - 10 minutes even when i thought it wasn't meant to
3. Wifi appeared to stay on when it was woken up as it used the most power
4. Google Play Services and Android OS initaited most of the wake ups (approx 70%)
I turned off Google sync and also now turn off Wifi manually when I finish a session. Now I am losing almost zero battery whilst in standby i.e. On with lid closed.
It was the same for me. The battery turned of in 8h without use. I tried to wipe and restore without result.
I re-calibre the battery with the app BatteryRepair. Now my tablet is 50% after 24h unplugged and 3h of use.
Hope it works great for you too.

Ok, quick update;
i wiped the tablet using the Asus tool, which removed all my apps and gave me a clean base to test from.
I noted that there was now no battery drain at this level, with google sync on and wifi on.
I then slowly added the apps i needed (probably over half of them I didn't need - this is always a good time to consolidate)
I then started noticing the keyboard battery was draining even while closed, but not as much as before.
Reading your above posts, i turned off sync, kept on wifi. I still noted a bit of drain.
I then just turned off wifi before closing (left sync on). No drain.
Also i noted, the mouse(pad) always now returns when i open the tablet from sleep.
So for now, i can conclude that the combination of;
having the new Oct 18 patch,
reinitialising the tablet, then reinstalling (& reducing) my apps,
and turning off wifi before closing/sleeping the tablet seems to have stopped the battery drain.
for now
ps. no, i dont use Netflix.
another update:
fully charged the tablet last night to 100%, turned off wifi, then closed the lid.
Opened the next day (10 hours later), charge still 100% on both tablet and keyboard.
Definitely looks like its the wifi, and turning it off before closing stops the drain.

That is what does it for me too.
Only this helped me
I found nvavp is used by NVIDIA's Widevine DRM proprietary plugins.
I removed all proprietary DRM plugins from /system/vendor/lib.
Code:
/system/vendor/lib/drm
/system/vendor/lib/mediadrm
/system/vendor/lib/libWVStreamControlAPI_L1.so
/system/vendor/lib/libwvdrm_L1.so
/system/vendor/lib/libwvm.so
Then, the idle battary life becomes normal.

[Q] any advise to extend battery with cm11

Well I finally ditched webos (really did not want to but HP ended it) and installed cm11 jcsullins version with that toolbox. Everything works kind of OK (I hate that the lower buttons for back/home are right at the space bar) but battery life is just awful. I used to dual boot and then bought the movie player in webos and removed android due to android being a huge battery hog. I am back without a dual boot, erased everything, flashed a6, the whole works and am forcing myself to use android.
After all that, does anyone have any tips to make the battery last longer? I used to sit on the porch for hours, smoking cigars and watching movies/TV shows in webos and still have battery left but with android I am lucky to get 6 hours. My galaxy s4 always seemed like a battery hog too so I did expect it a little but would like some tips to get a good 8 hours or more watching shows. I am using bsplayer free right now as I can stream some stuff from my Nas if the WiFi behaves but mostly bi copy to the touchpad and watch or I am looking at getting a otg flash drive (Sandisk work on cm11 on the touchpad?).
Any help is appreciated.
Just to get it off my chest....wheel of fortune crashes like there is no tomorrow lol sheesh and a huge battery drain too!
It's the cigars.
Touchpads HATE cigars.
