Non-Root Options - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hello everyone.
So, I have been rooting my devices (mostly HTC) over the past 12 years. My primary purpose for root was for installing custom roms. However, for the past few years, I have only been using root for Titanium Backup to bk up, remove bloatware or freeze apps that I want to keep, but don't want constantly running & Game Guardian.
I currently have in my possession, a new Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Snapdragon with 512G of storage as well as a new Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Exynos with 128G of storage. However, I will be sending one back...
Given my latest usage for root, are there alternatives I could use on the SGN9 Snapdragon, return the Exynos & skip rooting?
I appreciate your assistance!
Tobi

Root seems unnecessary with this device. Freezing apps can be done using non root methods. The only feature of root I miss is the ability to truly remove bloatware from the device, but the crapware can be disabled just through adb commands, so it is not a big deal.

Thanks, for the reply! Do you have any suggestions for apps that can freeze, backup & or a good non-root file explorer?
Cheers!

Root explorer is the best file explorer. ClockworkMod has a backup app that requires no root. I don't recall what it is called. Island can freeze apps as well as clone them. Just follow the instructions perfectly.

Are you in the USA? If so, then keep the Snapdragon, because it's the better device (seriously). You can flash the firmware that matches your US carrier. Are you on T-MOBILE? If so, then SM-N960U1 is the best of the snapdragon models/firmwares, because it is carrier unbranded, with very little bloat, and works with all Tmobile features (unlike other carriers). That's my setup, and it's VERY good with the new Pie+OneUI. No root needed.
Use ADB to disable/uninstall any bloat you don't want. Here is a guide:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-9/how-to/note-9-debloat-bash-script-t3907659
Don't run that script; just pick and choose what you want to disable and run each line individually in your adb shell.
Finally, keep the Exynos if you just need root and can get it working with your provider as well as the Snapdragon model did.

Thanks guys for your advice.
Yes, Atlanta my N9 Snapdragon is the SM-N960U1 variant & I'm on AT&T.
Unfortunately, I now have another conundrum. Prior to transferring my HTC 10 contents to my N9 Snap, my 10 went into perpetual boot-trip. When I finally got it to boot up, there was an internal storage corruption error & TWRP isn't available. In addition, now the 10 won't launch any apps, or read my external SD.
I had previously (& recently) backed the entire phone up on my PC, including TB & all the recent backups from within. However, my N9 isn't rooted. Is there was a way to extract the .apk & data from TB via PC & transfer it to my N9?
Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.
Regards,
Tobi

[Q] Min reqs for app install

I have recently purchased the GT-P1000 in Kuwait. It's unlocked but I don't have admin rights to it. Initially, there was no Android Market but I found the fix for that in another post.
My current dilemma now is I can't seem to get apps to install. The downloads will pause themselves and never install the application. I've had this happen to Angry Birds and Robo Defense.
As of now, I have no desire to flash this device. AFAIK, it's 3g voice/data straight out of the box and I don't want to risk losing those features.
Now, the question is, what's the bare minimum I need to do so I can install apps from Android Market and remove unwanted apps?
So I feel like an idiot now. For some reason, I can now get the apps to download and install: Angry Birds, Robo Defense, ES File Explorer, and Dropbox have installed successfully.
I still would like to remove some apps and install some that will need root access. Can someone confirm that if I root the phone that it won't affect the 3G data/voice capabilities?
ROOTING only gives you su (superuser admin) rights to your phone. It doesnt affect your phone or device functions (unless you mess around somewhere). Rooting gives you ability to access files or functions that vendor has it locked out from you. Sort of like jailbreaking the iphone.
Flashing roms is another thing. Some roms have no support to some functions But since you already own an unbranded non carrier GSM and Not CDMA tab. You shouldnt really worry.
all samsung tabs are different...so in lots oof countries they made some differnces in possibilties.
Try out by going to my weblog and after registering to download thje apks you find in the download section.
Best is to download this on another laptop..and copy the apk to the micro sd card in a folder with your name
then withe a file manager clck on the apk to see if they install
not working.....then you need to root your samsung to make it work

thanks for the info. I didn't think rooting would break anything but my paranoia got the best of me.
I rooted my phone yesterday and was able to install and run apps that need SU rights. I'm still havin trouble removing the apps that came with the Tab. Thoughts anyone?
FYI, I can uninstall apps that I've downloaded from the market.

Oho. stock apps cannot be uninstalled. Simplest way to uninstall stock apps is to use Titanium Backup Pro. Before you do that, be sure you backup the app in case you need it again later.

Uninstalling bloat apps not working

Hey all!
I am absolutely new to the rooting world (last time I used a rooted phone was circa 2009/2010) so please bare with me, I am have a world of trouble with getting the bloatware apps uninstalled from my phone. HTC u11, I installed twrp, I installed magisk, I tried to uninstall the apps, no dice, I then grabbed one of the apps out there for removing system apps, I gave it root, it failed.
I'm hoping to get to the linux subsystem to see if I can get a jdk running on this. I'm trying to make a dev box I can use while hiking (all with a microphone and finger tracking keyboard). But the first pebble becomes a stumbling block. How to actually get root and act as an elevated user in android.
Anyways I think I'm missing something and maybe I missed a piece in the documentation since I did kinda fly through it.
There are a few ways to remove bloatware.
You can delete them in TWRP.
You can delete them with a root capable file explorer.
You can delete them with Titanium Backup.
You can delete them with an app that's been made for the purpose.
If one of the above doesn't work, try another.
You can also pseudo-debloat by using a Magisk module that simply systemlessly "removes" them. They'll still be there, taking up space, but you won't be able to access them in any way (until the module is uninstalled). I don't think this is what you want...
Doing it in TWRP should always work.
With MagiskSU, I've personally tested it with both a root file explorer (FX) and TiBu. But, YMMV...
Purpose made apps might or might not work. It depends if they're properly updated or not.

[SCRIPT] DEBLOAT Script

Hello everyone,
Note FE comes with much more bloatware than most other phones, it has apps preinstalled that some of us probably will never use.
Some of those apps may even run at boot and consume RAM and CPU. For this purpose I made a small very effective script and that will remove huge amount of applications. This script works on de-odexed and odexed ROMs.
I created the script when Samsung released Nougat update for Galaxy phones and I use it all the time without any problems. This also support other Samsung galaxy phones running Marshmallow or Nougat. So we have ALL-IN-ONE solution for debloating.
* You can easily edit script and add character ' # ' to exclude certain APP from deleting *
Take care here. This debloat might affect apps on rooted devices. Do a backup first.
I've done this before on other phones but can't remember. I'm guessing you need to be rooted to do use this script ? Also you need to flash this is TWRP?

Not sure about root (I'm rooted anyway), but you need to flash it with TWRP. I fdound that uninstalling Chrome stopped some pf my apps. Disabling Chrome does not have this effect - which shows that Chrome (which I dislike) is active even when diaabled.
Also, uninstalling Samsung voice input will soft brick your device. But you can safely disable it: go figure.
Oreo update for this script?
Pie update?????

Convert user app to system app without root (Or with root but then unroot)

Hello guys! I've been an android user since 2011. I have experience in rooting and unrooting some of my devices but with this phone, P10, I don't want to have root for personal reasons.
There are some personal apps that I need to convert as a system app though.
So does anybody know how to convert a user app to a system app without root? Or root -> convert apps to system app -> unroot.
Most of the guides here about unrooting seems to be flashing to stock.
I have also seen (through searching) threads about moving user apps to system apps and those actually don't answer my question.
If anyone could help me, I would be very grateful!
Thanks!
You could convert most applications to system using Titanium Backup with ease, you will need root, there is no way to write to system without it. You could unroot after it, and uninstall TiB, still, I don't get why you would want to do that, but it's doable.

I'd like some apps to be installed as a system app but I don't want root as some bank apps don't play well with them.
So which method of root should I use so that I can unroot and still have my apps as a system app?
Magisk released version 16 specifically to support Huawei devices and our issues. You can pass safety net with it and hide su to damaged applications with it.
On the other hand, not sure if I would trust an Bank which puts the security on the client side as prerequisite to operate.
Do Banks require to their Windows clients not to have administrator user? No, right? (in fact, Windows OS needs a local admin account to operate). As clients we should request equal treatment. Administrator in Windows is as dangerous as root in Linux, so Banks should be honest and stop bothering clients, instead of us having to hide from them...

best backup method for unrooted device?

Im currently just copying the whole thing to my laptop and using Google drive but that way is a bit clunky and somethings like bespoke ringtone etc seems to get lost in the process. Most people seem to use titanium backup but that isn't an option as rooting will erase all info (I think).
Any other suggestions?

You could look at ADB backup/restore. It doesn't require root. Note, I've not used it as I use TB (I always root my phones).
Helium is a nicer option and also doesn't require root. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup

Not aware you could use ADB to backup. Might try that.
