Always Have Dark Boot Animation? - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

I like having my phone with the light theme but prefer the dark boot animation. Turns out the dark animation is only possible with dark theme enabled.
I noticed there's a "bootanimation.zip" and "bootanimation_dark.zip" inside the /product/media/ folder.
What I tried doing is taking a font changer Magisk Module and modified it by removinh the fonts and replaced them with the dark boot animation zip file (but renamed it from bootanimation_dark.zip to bootanimation.zip). This way, my theory is no matter if the phone is set to dark theme or not, both the boot animation files are the dark ones.
I also changed the config file in the Module by telling it to replace system/product/media/bootanimation.zip.
After flashing, nothing changes. I'm guessing it's because I probably have to mount /product somewhere but I'm no developer so I don't really know where I need to do that.
If anyone has any insight on this, or even a different way than a Magisk Module, I'd appreciate if you could share!

Bump

You would need twrp to do anything about it basically, or edit the product IMG and then flash the modified version.
It's write protected so any changes are reverted

Hey thanks for the reply!
Ahh man, I guess a Magisk Module won't do the trick then. Editing an IMG file is not something I'm familiar with so I guess I'll deal with that white animation until TWRP is released.
Thanks again for the info!

I tried this with the P3XL with magisk and basically I came out empty handed, but I do remember a custom kernel that removes the write protection did the trick too. Maybe look into the ones we have now and that might do the trick

[MOD] Silent Battery Full Notification CWM3 Compatible

*Updated 2/6/11 to be flashable with CWM3 or less*
So, after many nights of being awakened by that annoying battery full audio notification I figured I'd do something about it. Here is a flashable zip that replaces the .ogg file that the system uses with a blank one. Will work on any ROM/File System.
Flash through CWM (v3.x or less):

I did something similar to this in my newest version of my ROM, I took the original sound files and made the extension FILENAME.ogg.bak
This removes the sound but if you want it back you can just remove the ".bak" portion of the file name.

I had originally wanted to make a flashable zip that did just that (and also one to change it back)! But I wasn't able to figure out how to tell 'update-script' to do that .

Worked like a charm! Now I can charge AND sleep!
Updated
Updated so it's CWM3 compatible.
What is the name of the sound file that makes the battery full notification sound? I'm too sleepy at night to determine which sound just woke me up.
Thanks.
edit: Is it TW_Battery_caution.ogg? I've renamed it with a .bak extension and charging my phone now.

Installing Silent BatteryFull Notification CWM3
I am a newbie to all of this, but am sick of being awake all night long with the battery notification waking me up and not being able to go back to sleep.
I found your post and attached file.
I have a droid X - global - motorola.
1. Will this work on this phone?
2. Are there any risks of damaging the rest of the operating system?
3. If no - how do I install this on the phone?
Any help to get me back to sleep would be appreciated.
Thank you
No this will not work on your phone. This is a MOD for the SAMSUNG EPIC 4G and ONLY the SAMSUNG EPIC 4G
EB13 OR DK28?
if DK28 i'd like to request an EB13 please
why does the file have to be replaced
why cant it just be removed using some sorta file explorer on the phone?
further more WTF is the reason for this sound other then to wake people up and/or piss them off? - as far as I know all phones stop charging when they get full so you wont over charge the phone

Flashing Fonts

I'm having problems flashing fonts on my Thunderbolt. On my Eris and Incredible I could flash any font pack through CWM and Amon RA, respectively, but when I tried last night on my Bolt none of the fonts took. I made sure the font packs I flashed were edify fonts, but still no dice. One of my main reasons for rooting is because I hate the stock android font. Can someone please help me out with this? Thanks in advance
This is the link I got my fonts from in case anyone was wondering

Try using an app called absolute system from the market ...that's what I used on my dinc and it worked just fine

Was kinda hoping for a free way and a reason why manually flashing fonts isn't working on the TB. Thanks for the app, though, if i get desperate I'll d/l it. I hope someone smarter than me can come in here and help a brotha out

I used to use these fonts, also, and could not get them to work now.......so I unzipped the file and pushed the 3 files to /system/fonts.....rebooted and I am good to go. By doing it that way, it does not matter if they are edify or amend.
Just use Font Changer, it's free AND it WORKS =P

That sounds awesome, but I don't know how to do that. I've been using font changer which is free on the market. I'd rather be able to flash them, because flashing things is great and it feeds the addiction, but this gets the job done
try typefresh on the market, only thing it does is back up and restore fonts... unfortunately requires AndExplorer to select fonts to restore but will back up all on its own... I actually like AndExplorer but use RootExplorer most of the time, AndExplorer has a more pleasing GUI however
i just used typefresh to install coconut-darkstar font (the most elegant font anywhere IMO) - worked great. was stuck at "rebooting..." after selecting the font so had to reboot manually but everything flashed fine. as posted earlier it required andexplorer but thats free in the market too.

font changer worked for me too, flashed a few different fonts to find one i liked. just do yourself a favor and hit reboot later when the app prompts you then reboot your phone via other means, the app's reboot function locked up my phone and had to pull the battery.
Anyone know what the default font for our phones are in case I want to go back?

(Update 12/22/11) [Bootanimation/Splash] Lightning Vortex w/ animated HTC splash

Hey XDA, been away for a while and just finished my first semester of college. Checked up on my old thread to find alot of positive things. A while back I wanted to do more with this and never got around to it, but figured it was about time I did...
The new animation starts somewhat similarly to the old one with added transition between the HTC logo and the vortex. Also after the vortex, instead of a static image at the end I've thrown together a completely new piece that will loop until the phone finally decides to start.
This version also uses JPGs rather than PNGs. I just found out JPGs could be used the other day... After optimizing the PNGs, (something that wasn't considered for the old one) this new one comes out to a total of 234MB... (one of those things that happen when you only use AfterFX for the project...) If anyone would like this anyway... Let me know and I'll put it up somewhere.
I also made a basic splash screen, something that was misadvertised with the old version. It is the first image in the attachments and can be installed thru bootloader. (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?37e8as4f4m68cwu)
Download: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?w1ci9p2ugk7271d
If you would like the stock sound to use with this download it from the attachments below, extract the mp3 and add it to /system/media.
GIFs were 4-5MB each so heres a video instead...
Old version has been moved to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20568970 if anyone wants to check it out.
Thanks for the link, and if you get a chance to try it out let me know how you like it
This is [email protected]$$! Way better then the stock bootanimation
Great work!

How to I install this? HBoot or Recovery? I know sometimes you need to rename it to the PG0059 thing (I know it's not right) and I'm just curious before I go screwing anything up

I personally used clockwork recovery and did install sdcard/update.zip
Place the update.zip from the download onto the root of the sd card, then in ROM manager, reboot into recovery and install the update.
There are alternatives to this such as just putting the bootanimation.zip into the right folder using root explorer, but I ran into permission problems so I did it this way.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Is this new boot animation really 24MB? Like, I yanked it out of the update .zip because I normally move them with Root Explorer. I find easier, and I have a system to doing this where I save the old ones in the folder and just rename them. Allowing me to swap them out at will by simply altering the name of the bootanimation . zip back to that.
-Edit- NVM. I see why it's 24MB now.
Holy effing sh!t cakes! That's a lot of graphical content to run through there in the beginning. Looks awesome though!
Again, just to anyone reading this that hasn't tried this boot animation yet.

Glad you like it. I would have done the same using root explorer, but I ran into read only and permission problems for anything i tried to use it with. And I really tryed to lower the size the best I could... It was originally 165mb, then found out it was rendering w/o compression (lossless), changed render settings managed to get to 95mb... to get it to 24mb I lowered the quality a little more and it skips every other frame. After uploading it I attempted to make it smaller but all i can do is lower the quality even more, and at 17mb it looked pretty bad.
PS- could someone link me to the stock FinalThunder.mp3 I haven't had it since I flashed my ROM

No I wasn't *****ing about the size. I was checking to make sure I didn't bork something up extracting it. I was just verifying as most of them are 2-6MB.
Here's the Final Thunder .mp3
I ripped it right from the system folder with RE so it should be good. Make sure you check the permissions though. As they may need to be altered to get it to jive with the way it gets read. It should be;
X-X-[0]
X-[0]-[0]
X-[0]-[0]
I think.
X meaning checked.
I had to rar it to post it.
Edit: Yes, that's the way the permissions need to be above, but when it gets extracted it changes them to;
[0]-[0]-[0]
X-X-X
X-[0]-X
So if you just drop it in there it probably WON'T WORK. Make sure you change the permissions!
Again, thanks for the awesome boot animation!
Thanks, I just now noticed the mount r/w button at the top of root explorer >.>
I also did all of this before I saw the post edit, so I did just throw it in there, but it still worked =o
Now I can see the bootscreen everyones been thanking me for lol... Thanks again for the sound clip =)

Hardly a fair trade for the kick ass boot animation. But no problem.
Yeah, many moons ago RE owned me until I found that little mount r/w button. After finding it however it's been an extremely useful tool.
I'm surprised the MP3 worked for you actually w/o changing permissions. :shrugs: I'm leaving the warning there in case someone else downloads it for the same purpose and it doesn't.
Which file or folder do i drop this into to make sound work. I am on gingeritis and had to delete the VZW_bootanimation and there is no sound once i swapped that boot animation out with this one?

It's either system/media
or
system/customize/resource
But I think it's system/media
Find the bootanimation .zip and that's where the sound file should go.
I tried putting it system/customize/resource and that didnt do anything so i will try system media I guess just put in the main file or any one of the sbu files I have
audio
GPU
weather
folders in there will try a few i guess?

If anyone wants to try this, it is a zip of the vortex boot animation hopefully with the sound. It is for anyone running a rom that has a boot animation in the system/customize/resource folder and the boot animation is labeled VZW_bootanimation.
Let me know how it goes please
My apologies if the OP does not want this and will take down if asked
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9663029/VortexBootAnimation.zip
I got the animation to work, but no thunder. Tried everything! I think it may be my current set up (gingeritits and imosyons 2.5.4.test.4 kernel) since day one, there's been no sound. It came with the old school PC looking bootanimation and I read somewhere that, that boot ani is supposed to sound like a disc drive spooling up with clicks n what not, but it never did. I remember on the virus Rom I had, it DID have sound and the .mp3 was called VRsound.mp3. I made my own, fixed permissions, renamed it to VRsound.mp3 and replaced it. That worked. I could be wrong, but because this ROM didn't come with sound in the first place, I just can't get it.... Oh well. Still a tight boot! sound or not!

[Q] what am i doing wrong changing file permissions etc.

I want to further u dressed what I'm doing wrong in changing lock.ogg and other sound and animation files. I understand that the qmg files are made in a way to make it more difficult to change but I'm doing something wrong. Even completely deleting the stock mini loop animations with my root browser has No effect. They aren't their but they continue play on every boot. I recently flashed a lollipop animation that is working but upon looking at the way the the files were done using .Baker did not work for me. I just want to understand what exactly I'm doing wrong. Existing file rename with .bak place new file in required location renaming to Samsung miniloop etc. Change permissions to match making sure the root browser is in r/w. AND NOTHING.... I really want to understand r/w and later decompose/recompile but this first hurdle with file changing is really messing with me. Any help is appreciated

I tried deleting them altogether and they still play. And this really isn't matter of just having a custom boot animation because I can easily flash a zip file but I want to do it myself. Is it really necessary to use the Samsung theme to recreate a working animation for my phone

I would recommend downloading a boot animation that works on this phone and see what files you have to modify. I know for sound it is 3 of them.

If these work what is it that you are trying to do? I think I missed something.
BAD ASS NOTE 4
In the original post I inquired on what issue I'm having with moving/changing/renaming files and their permissions. I have tried everything I have seen on the the forums ie. Renaming original ending with .bak placing new file within the directory and renaming to match the original file. Changing permissions then reboot into recovery. Wipe dalvik and cache (even tried not wiping) reboot system anf either nothing at all or the original samsung boot. Ive tried boot animation changer and six different types of file explorers (2 paid versions) hours and hours of youtube videos and thread after thread to find my solution. I see that qmg files most likely can only be exchanged with qmg files created via samsung themer. Im currently using an sm-n910t on the hyperdrive rls3 rom and just recently flashed the bioshovk kernel in the hopes that it would support .zip boot animations but it doesnt quite work like that. I tried the starkissed kernel and the nadia kernel to end in softbrick. I am extremely interested in all of these things and eagerly look forward to decompile/recompile but as it stands im stuck at unchangable boots lol. Im really hoping to see possibly a video of the changes being done on an actual note 4 not an s5 or anything else. As always any info is greatly appreciated

[TUTORIAL][WIP][OPR6] Android Oreo Pixel Mod With Working Substratum

This is an extension of my Android Oreo Pixel Mod thread, found here https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/themes-apps/zip-android-oreo-pixel-mod-t3661388
This thread is for the users who want the Pixel Mod but also the ability to use Substratum. Why does my original mod break substratum? It modifies the framework-res.apk. The pixel no longer gets it's features from a modified framework-res.apk. It gets it from a theme. Making a pixel mod work with Substratum now requires making the 6P do the same thing as the Pixel. However, to simplify the mod I mimiced the features by modifying the framework-res.apk. This breaks Substratum. Following this walkthrough will enable the Pixel Theme on your 6P without modifying your framework-res.apk. Exactly how Google does it with the Pixel. (Exciting right?) This will allow the use of Substratum. This is what I am using and I can verify that substratum works.
Here'es the first thing: The files that you will need.
1)My original Pixel mod (flashable) -- https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=961840155545590555
2)Stock framework (flashable) -- https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=673368273298981491
3)Pixel Theme files (NOT flashable) -- https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=889764386195925591
4)You need to be ROOTED
5)You need a file manager that has root functions and can edit file permissions. (I.E.: Amaze File Manager, EX File Explorer, MT Manager)
Here are the steps. This is as simple as I can make it at the moment. It's not too complicated, but if you are a beginner with this stuff make sure to make a back up. Even if you're not. Make a backup. You are responsible for anything that happens to your device and making a backup will save everybody.
Step 1) Download all files onto your internal storage
Step 2) Extract the contents of "NO FLASH Pixel Mod + Substratum.zip". You should have a build.prop file and a folder called "overlay"
Step 3) Move that folder in your Vendor folder. Leave behind the "build.prop" If you go to your root directory you should see the folder "Vendor". Along with folders like "sys" and "system". But you don't want those. You want "Vendor".
Step 4) Make sure the permissions are accurate. The 2 apk files that you will find inside the "overlay" folder (the framework file and the pixel.apk file you'll find in the "pixel" folder inside the "overlay" folder) are set to 644. The folders "overlay" and "pixel" ("pixel" is found within the "overlay" folder) needs to be set to 755.
Step 5) Edit the build.prop file found within your vendor to include the lines that are found in the included build.prop (See footer)
Step 6) Reboot into TWRP
Step 7) In this order flash "Android OPR6 Pixel Mod 6P.zip" and then "Stock Framework.zip"
Step 8) Reboot
Step 9) If you don't see Round Icons you may need to clear Pixel Launcher Data
If SystemUI is crashing after reboot, reboot into TWRP and mount the vendor partition. Then delete the overlay folder and that'll solve the issue
If you followed those correctly you should have now have a Pixel Theme (Accent color, Night Mode, and Round icons) with compatibility with Substratum.
*footer*
ro.opa.eligible_device=true
ro.com.google.ima.theme=5
ro.boot.vendor.overlay.theme=com.google.android.theme.pixel
Followed each step as explained. Changed permissions from 644 to 755. Blue accent gone and stock teal is back. Default round icons gone and the ever so stupid square ones back. And Substratum's still broken. Wonder where I went wrong!!!
Edit : Additional to that, there are 'n' number of folders namely ".." with today's date as modified date. Each ".." folder contains multiple ".." folders and it just keeps going on and on....
Never faced this earlier. Have I screwed up something???

Edit : Additional to that, there are 'n' number of folders namely ".." with today's date as modified date. Each ".." folder contains multiple ".." folders and it just keeps going on and on....
Never faced this earlier. Have I screwed up something???

That is interesting. The folder thing is weird. Did you set the files "build.prop", "framework_generated.......apk", and "Pixel.apk" to 644? The files needed to be 644 and the folders needed to be 755

Should I be reflashing Vendor image to set the folders right???
May be I can retry the whole stuff again?
I am ready to be the specimen for experiments
Is there any change Pixel Theme alone can be enabled on Nexus using ADB overlay service commands that were explained recently on main XDA page?

Definitely. I'm redoing the steps myself and I'm running into a weird bump. I'm going to revise it a little maybe. Definitely a good idea to reflash the vendor and take another shot though!

Try setting build.prop to 600 instead of 644

I believe so. Placing the overlay folder found from Pixel's vendor to the same place on the 6P should give the 6p the ability to use all the overlay service commands

Pleasure's all mine. When we can not do something on our own, the least we could do is to assist someone who is more capable.
Coming back to the point, I am using Amaze & EX Explorer to replace the said files.
Strangely, I am getting various error messages, like "Insufficient space".
Also, everytime I try and copy a folder, it wont show up until I restart the device.
I know this is little too much for you to imagine. I'll may be post a short GIF in some time for you to get a gist of the issue.
Thanks and apologies for the story.
Worked out fine with your instructions, only had to clear data and cache of pixel launcher to get round icons. Thanks!
Tested, substratum works but no night light

Wich permission did you use for the build prop? 600 or 644?

Congratulations to me... I think I screwed up my phone. All of a sudden Substratum started working (may be I had done everything alright???). Applied a couple of overlays and voila!!! The phone does a factory reset by itself and get stuck at the Google animation. Interestingly, it's the new animation that came with the OPR6 mod. Don't know where I went wrong. I have currently switched my cell off. Maybe I need to reflash everything again???

I don't believe there is a need to wipe if your phone factory reset itself. There may be a chance that it didn't successfully factory reset. I would reflash stock system.img and stock vendor.img. That should undo everything and let you boot up

Same here. Is there a fix for that yet @krisyarno?

Not to contradict OP but I used 644 for files (.prop and apk's) and 755 for folders. Also I don't know if it helps but at first I didn't have night light and installed the "pixel" apk (inside the overlay folder), rebooted the device and voila! After that just cleared pixel launcher cache and that took care of the round icons.
