Wi-Fi Charging - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

I need a better Wi-Fi charger. My current one will not work with a peice of metal that I use for my magnet phone holder. Also, wanted to add a credit card holder to the back and the does allow wifi Charging.
Is there a wifi charger that will work?

I think you mean wireless charger correct? Anyway, it's the metal you're using for the magnet phone holder, not the wireless charger, that's an issue. I don't think there's a wireless charger out that can go through metal. It's why phones with that feature have glass back.

That should be fine. That's just plastic and maybe leather or whatever material.

Most Qi charging pads talk about 5mm
BTW, repeated exposure to intense magnet fields (such as those created by a Qi charger's coil) could wipe the info encoded in a credit card's mag stripe.

How big is your magnet phone holder? My magnet holder sits on the lower bottom of the back, and leaves room on middle section to wirelessly charge with this charger.

Play Store N7 Case - Magnet Sensor

Does anyone have this case yet? I already ordered it, but I have no idea if it will work with the N7's magnet to wake feature.
You would think it would since Google is selling it, but I dunno. If it doesn't - It would have been nice for them to tell us about the feature so we could hold off on ordering cases.
Good question! I'd really like to know this as well. I thought someone on here said they had already received their case from Google.
If it doesn't just go to a crafts store and pick up some a role of sticky magnet tape. Cut a very tiny circle and adhere it to the lid where the sensor will be on the device.
Problem solved.

Awesome, I didn't know magnetic tape existed / was so readily available.

Thats a brilliant suggestion thanks. Do you know if the polarity was A or B?
Ill have to do this if a magnet isnt in the cover. easy fix!
ugh. There's no magnet case. The magnets are there to hold the pogo pins to the dock. It's how pogo pins work. If it were a cable how else would it stick to the pins? The sleep feature is in case you want to turn off the screen while charging or playing music, or if it were possible for a MHL dock.

As reasonable as your argument is, have you seen where the magnetic spot is? Its a few inches above the pogo pins from what I've read

I do believe pogo pins work via spring contacts, not magnetism.

Yep, that is exactly how they work, as seen in the Galaxy Nexus landscape dock.
Though the positioning of the magnetism sensor on the Nexus 7 seems to be rather odd, bottom left...(probably just internal spacing constraints though). It would make a bit more sense for it to be on the right side, but that's probably just me.

After some testing and questions on my you tube video of the screen off/on behavior there seems to be some dependence on the type of magnet used. Those soft flexible magnets like some refrigerator magnets don't seem to work. I don't know if its the type of material that makes them ineffective or the strength. Magnetic tape might not work.

The "spot" is actually right where the pogo pins are. Maybe towards the top of the pogo pin area but certainly not inches away.

Anyone using Qi wireless?

Hey guys, I am wondering if anyone has attempted to use Qi wireless with the G Flex. I had the Palm touchstone for my GS3 and fell in love with it. With the Flex I am figuring it is a bit more complicated as there is not simply a dedicated hookup on the back of the device that made the Palm mod possible on the S3, as well as most Qi enabling devices out there connect into the microusb port, which may not be as simple as it could be given the curved back and oddity that is the microusb 3.0 standard connector.
So has anyone given it a shot and have some recommendations?
I didn't feel the need to since the battery last me all day on one charge even with somewhat heavy use.

I'm running this on a Qi wireless charger now. Works quite well except you can't get enough juice out of the Qi receivers on the market. They only go up to 750 mA which means it takes a long time to charge. But I like the convenience.

Do you need a special case for wireless charging? I thought it didn't support the Qi wireless charger. Is it a new feature in 4.4.2?

Good question. Qi wireless charging is a hardware limited option. So you have to add a Qi wireless receiver. You can find numerous universal Qi micro usb "A" on Amazon or eBay. The receiver plugs right into the charging port you have and the receiver is either secured to the back of the phone (it's a really thin, like a thick piece of paper almost). Since there is no removable cover this is the only option. Now if you don't have a case or have a slim one, it probably wouldn't look good. I have mine tucked under a Trident case (in between the phone the case), the Aegis I believe. So you don't even notice it.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Man this is a old post. lol I think I charged the Flex like I do my Note 4. I'll put it on the wireless charger when I sleep and maybe when I take a shower or eating. With the Note 4 it has quick charge so I use the cable if I need some quick juice.
Any word when the Flex 2 is coming out?

Qi for s5 active?

Anyone found qi charging pad that will work with the s5 active and maintain the ip67 rating?

Sorry buddy. Don't think there'll be one. I looked at the back and there doesn't seem to be any contacts for the wireless cover to connect to. I might be wrong (might have a different method of charging), but don't hold your breath

yeah that's what i'm finding out... how half-assed is it of samsung to not include qi charging in a phone that is supposed to be water-resistant. you'd think they would have made the power door flap burlier and then included qi charging, knowing that hardly anyone would use the power door flap if they had the option for wireless charging.
I found a kit in ebay that has the receiver and a charging pad. I posted a problem about it in another thread, but now, I am finding that it works well with the charger that came with the receiver. It still allows the back to seal properly, and it charges though my TPE case. I don't know how well it would work through a thicker case. The charger is black and rectangular and slightly bigger than the phone. I bought two round chargers, but they don't work that well. The phone has to be positioned perfectly on the round ones. I'll try to post a link later for the kit I bought.

It would be nice if they had a Q&A and general thread for the Active.

I modded a wireless pad with magnets to create a magnetic wireless charging dock

I always loved the idea of snap on wireless charging of the Palm Pixi, so when I bought the S7 Edge, I wanted to have a similar effect.
I modded CHOETECH Fast Charging Area Qi Wireless Charging Pad with some 1/2 x 1/8 Inch Neodymium Rare Earth Disc Magnets and added some 15/8 x 1/32 in N52 Neodymium Magnets in between the case (you will likely need a TPU flexible case since hard ones will be tough to conform around the magnets) and the phone. I now have a magnetic FAST wireless charger for my car where I just need to snap in my phone and it charges. I, unfortunately, sometimes go over bumps on the highway at 80+mph and have not had the phone move a bit.
This should work with ANY compatible phone with wireless charging.
The entire process is easy, here's a quick video I made:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAoC0CrEuMw
Not mentioned or shown in the video is my supergluing the magnets into the case and the into the charger so they do not move.
Edit: Tip from Milimbar, put tape over the magnets so it doesnt scratch the glass
I'm using a Kenu Airframe+ vent mount and a piece of plastic in between the the wireless charging pad and the kenu.
Overall, this is not a cheap mod/car dock. You could get the cheaper, non-fast charging wireless pad, split magnets with someone, and get a cheaper vent mount.
Fast Wireless Charging pad: $35
Kenu Airframe: $30
Magnets: $13 and $12
Total: $90
Edit: the only reason why I had used the 1/2 x 1/8 magnets is because I had spares from a previous purchase. JaredC01 makes a great point that you can combine a few of the 5/8 x 1/31 magnets together to form a stronger magnet.
Cheaper option:
Non-fast Wireless Charging Pad: $26
50 count 15 x 1mm 5/8 x 1/32 in N52 Strong Disc Rare Earth Neodymium: $12 (oos at the moment)
Wizgear vent mount: $10
Total: $48
Some images of the mod:
http://imgur.com/gallery/WUj4r
Quick gif of it in action, in the car:
http://i.imgur.com/6ClCxUJ.gifv
Issues:
If there is a magnet at the bottom right of the phone (while facing the back of the phone), auto-brightness and the lights of the capacitive buttons will NOT work due to the smart case sensors. Just go ahead and remove the magnet from that position from the case and the charging pad. The 3 magnet positions will still be more than enough to hold the phone up.

Another poster said his S7 edge held onto a magnetic stand in his car. Does this work without your magnetic case? Only tea on I as is I want to mod my car charger to be wireless charging with magnets holding the phone vice the squeeze system it uses, and not having to worry about a case would be cool? Though I'm sure I'll eventually find a case I like and can mod it with the magnets.

Looks nice, you know what they say about necessity right....
I would put at least a piece of tape or screen protector over the magnets so they are not in direct contact with the glass.

I'll have to test later but it probably does because of the wireless charging coils inside the phone. If this were the case, it would not charge since there cannot be metal or magnets inbetween the coils

The wireless charger is a big plus with magnetic mount ? icing on a cake i just hope nothing affects it in the long run
Awesome idea, though for the magnets couldn't you have just used all of the smaller magnets and added additional magnets to the base side (stacking them like coins) for a stronger field?
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
Yeah, good point, I had some extra thicker ones, but, yes that should work!
Good post! Thin metal disks could be enough for your phone. To save money, retail packaging uses a magnet on only one side of the connection.
I've made about 4 of my own charging docks. I played with magnets for a while but what I really love is micro suction foam. Stuff is amazing and works on any case or phone with a smooth surface. Here's what I made for my car. I took a standard wireless charger. Encased in epoxy. Then cut it into a square. Wrapped in aluminum and put microsection foam on the face.

Thats a great idea. Is there a specific microfoam that you buy? Care to link the items you purchased? I might play around with that as well.
Do you have to clean the microfoam from time to time otherwise it loses its grip?
With the magnet case on my phone, I noticed that auto-brightness does not work and the capacitive buttons at the bottom never light up. Both are negligible for me but I can see the auto brightness thing being an issue for some. I have NO idea why these two things dont work. Right when I remove the case, they work fine.

I have used this stuff before. http://www.amazon.com/Sewell-Direct-AirStick-Microsuction-250mmx300mm/dp/B00ITX9OU2. If the suction starts to wear off just wipe it off with a damp cloth and let it dry and you are good to go.
I would also like to hear about the results on using magnetics for the back are need or not due to the metal body. You should try it with the case and no magnetics and with our the case too.

So I tested points on the phone where it is magnetic:
http://i.imgur.com/t7hFvOU.jpg
However, other than the center, these arent really strong pulls. If you use the center as a magnetic spot, wireless charging will not work because that is where the coil is.
I also found out that if theres a magnet at the bottom right (while facing the back of the phone), auto-brightness and the lights on the capacitive buttons will not work. Bizarre. I just removed that magnet from the case and all is well again.
I'm not a storage expert but according to my knowledge about memory, we always had a strict no magnets rule.
Awesome idea! You made a unique fast wireless car charger! This Choetech fast wireless charging pad must be the best option to make this kind of fast wireless car charger. It is long and wide enough with 3 coils to keep steady charging with your car mount.
Why don't you just use the circular stock Samsung fast charger or the other CHOE one?

I would use the AirDock's Long Flexible Mount + CHOE Square Fast Qi Charger + Wizgear's mount piece (to makeshift attach the mounting piece to the back of the CHOE charger for use with AirDock) + the magnets OP mentions + cut nano suction for the top.

Yeah but I don't want that metal sticker to be seen. I put it inside my case and I have a thin thin thin case and it still will not hold. I have had other magnetic mounts not wireless charging mounts that work fine with the metal sticker inside my case.
