Hi @all,
has any of the O2X users experiences in using the phone with BMW bluetooth hands-free equipment? Is it possible to connect the phone? Is it possible to show the phonebook in iDrive/in the Radio "Professional" (if anybody has one)?
Cheers

If the BMW uses rSAP, like for example all VW, Audi and Mercedes installations do, you'll have no luck with android because no android phone (except for the Galaxy S so far) supports that protocol.
I have a 316 touring, 2009, with idrive, works without problems.

Well, this doesn't seem to be a problem. BMW confirms on its homepage several Android devices to work in the cars. The confirmed devices are: HTC Legend and Desire, Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Flipout and Milestone. So no problem from that side I think. I was more thinking about problems eventually caused by the LG-modified bluetooth stack.

Hey folks. Apologies if this is in the wrong area. Now that Android Auto is announced (http://www.android.com/auto/), I know there are lots of folks with Windows CE-based car headunits. I'm wondering if we could start a conversation about getting Android Auto set up on those head units. I have no idea what would be involved, but I want to see if it's a possibility for discussion.
I would also be interested in this if it is possible to port it to other windows or Microsoft based systems.
Yeah I'm bumping this for sure - I've got Microsoft Sync in mine, but it's the non-touch version, so I'm not sure if Android Auto could be configured for that hardware...
You can pretty much forget about this idea right now guys. Even the most advanced and most recent CE head units use hardware that is so outdated that even 1st gen android phones look cutting edge in comparsion (typically 400-800mhz single core processors and 128-256mb of ram). Even if it was somehow done it would be a serious pain in the behind to use.
Simply put no it will not happen
99.9 percent of windows ce devices are armv6
Only first gen android runs on that and android 5.0 requires atleast armv7
Ot would require a complete rewrite of android from the ground up and thats 2-3 yrs work if you can find a team of about 30 devs all willing to give up their day jobs to do it for free
90 percent of all android head units available already will not see auto at all just like all the android watches that will mever receive wear

That's assuming that Android Auto is running full-blown Android. My understanding is that the phone is doing all of the heavy lifting and the head unit is effectively a "dumb display" similar to MirrorLink. If that's the case, then the head unit doesn't need to do much and they are probably using some pretty low-spec hardware already. Now, if you're trying to get Android 5.0 on these systems so you can run Android Auto without a separate phone, then I agree - most headunits will not be able to handle that with their low specs
Anybody have any info on what the head unit is actually running on an Android Auto system? Does Google provide anything as an example, or is it strictly APIs and left unto the car/HU manufacturers to figure it out?

Android 5.0
Android wear
And android auto are all the same os
Need the same type of specs just look at the moto 360 and lg watch
Way to powerful to have on a windows ce device
The watches are also nothing more then a notification mirror on a digital watch with specs of over 1ghz cpu and 512mb ram the most powerdul windows ce device is the htc hd2
Which runs a 1ghz cpu and 512 mb of ram in the eu model

This one's important to remember. Android Auto is on your phone, not embedded into the car. This is the same approach Apple took with CarPlay and is probably the best way to go about it. The auto manufacturers build support for the platform into their own systems – many built on top of the BlackBerry owned QNX OS – and then Android Auto becomes visible to you when you connect your phone.

The head unit is not running Android (although I suppose it could). The head unit is running whatever OS the manufacturer wants and interacts with the phone, acting as somewhat of a dumb terminal to display information from the phone. The phone is running the meat and potatoes of the Android Auto solution.

Does anyone know of a car infotainment system that has been rooted? I am thinking of installing one in my 2005 Subaru Outback and am hoping to have something that I can install my preferred apps on. I know I can use my Nexus 7 to do it but I'd prefer more of a 'drop in' unit.

That's not android auto for Windows CE, but this app Easyconnected allows you to mirror everything from your Android phone through usb cable. Just activate usb debugging on developer options.
I know it's in Chinese, but nothing that Google translator couldn't help.

I've got to run it on my Hyundai OEM navigation, made by Motrex. It works perfectly, but I had to use an old version to change the language to English, hacking the zip file with languages, I've exchanged the file name with English phrases to the Chinese file name.
In the newer versions, this zip file has a password and I didn't find another way to exchange the language from Chinese.
Can you elaborate on how you got it working? I've got a 2013 Santa Fe Sport (Limited; nav) and would kill for this. I've been searching junkyards for 2017 head units lol
I've used total commander disguised as an update (renamed it as update.exe inside the folder update) on a flash drive, and the my head unit recognize it as an update.
When I go to settings - > update, total commander opens and after it I can run whenever program I want.
P.S. only works in Motrex headunits which are used by Hyundai in Russia and Latin America. European, Korean and American cars use another head units.

Hi guys. I install the application from carbit.cn , it is a good software, I was able to mirroring my Android phones (Samsung S4 and S6 edge also S4 mini ) to WinCe 6.0 , but I want to have this app in English , not in Chinese , I tried to rename the file from zip archive languages, res_Lang_CHN.xml to res_Lang_EN.xml , because in app the isn't a option to change language, but the program remain in chinese language, I saw just a few words are translated , the zip file has a password, I can't extract the xml file to be able to change it , have you any idea how I can do this ? Also there is an android app called CarMan.apk , witch is also in chinese , how I can skip not to install ?
Regards,
Emil

I have an Appradio 3 in my car. I figured out that the Nexus 6 does not support HDMI out. I guess I should have looked into that before I bought it. The Appradio also supports Mirrorlink.
Does anyone know if the Nexus 6 supports Mirrorlink? I was under the impression that Android Auto was going to use Mirrorlink to connect to the car. Has anyone got their Nexus 6 to connect to their Appradio?
I'm also interested in this topic... looks like i may need to change out my stereo if all else fails... darn.

I enabled Miracast through editing my build.prop to connect to a Microsoft wireless display adapter through my AppRadio2 but eventually switched to Chromecast. All of this is with AppRadio Unchained Reloaded.

Is there any way I can install ios and then CarPlay in my android device? Do you guys have any link of the tutorial?

Thank for the info.
This clearly can be done, the Cartizen Picasou (google or youtube) does this, there must be a way this can be done on android. Looking for the same, on my w213 mercedes, android auto doesn't take up the full screen, there is an android logo on 1/3 of the screen and then the remainder on 2/3rds whereas carplay does take the full screen. The Caritzen Picasou uses carplay to display and android interface. This would be a huge win for mercedes owners if this could be figured out.
The ATOTO car radio both supoort Andoid auto and carplay, may you can have a try.

I like Android Auto on my 2018 Hyudnai SFSAWD. However, I have another app on my Note 8 (not Rooted) that is called CarHome Ultra and have used it for years. It is much cleaner and has many more options that just Android Auto.
My question is there anyone who is familiar with CarHome Ultra and knows of a way to display/use that when in Android Auto?
My Note 8 is big, but the Display on the car is much bigger and better for driving.
CarHome is on Google Play and has so many options.
Here is a video on the apk and what it does. Much cleaner and more capability than just Android Auto.
Any comments/suggestions appreciated.

I guess it is Mirror Link application. It's different (than AA) standard that need to be supported by your car audio and your smartphone.
The apps have to use valid certificates and then Mirror Link can be used with CarHome app.

Thanks for your info. I guess there is no way for this to happen. I would really like to see something like this incorporated into AA. So much functionality.
In case it is a standalone car dashboard application, you can use AA Mirror to mirror it to your Android Auto head unit.
Download will try later and let everyone know.
Tried this apk today in the WiFi and USB modes to no success. See Attch. The apk works on my phone but only has options for:
1. Mirror to PC
2. Mirror to Phone
I do require some clarification. What do you mean by:
1. Standalone car dashboard app? (I assume that CarHome Ultra is that since I can use that in my car(s) and get all functionality on the Note 8 screen.)
2. Android Auto head unit? ( I assume that is my Hyundai AV Display on my dash.)
Thanks for your time and info. I do appreciate it greatly.
Please check this link to get an idea of mirroring your screen to your AndroidAuto head unit:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...irror-screen-android-auto-disucssion-t3734180
Please check this thread for a simplified guide to set it up:

It is fairly simple to get it running and you should be able to view(mirror) and control the CarHome Ultra app from your phone to your car display (provided it supports Android Auto).

Thank you very much for the help and info you have provided. I'm sure others will also find this very valuable.
I do have a Note 8, not rooted. My 2018 Hyundai SF Sports AWD does have Android Auto and it is really great.
The only thing that I don't like about the Hyundai AA is that it does not indicate Speed, Compass, and is somewhat limited on the apps that you can use in AA.
I would have assumed that if AA was running Android it would have allowed all Android APKs to be run just like a phone. JMHO!
However, I do understand that their are limitations on all software. If only CarHome Ultra was certified to run on AA, that would really solve the problem. I did write CarHome Ultra Support and asked if they could do something to make this app compatible with AA. Still have not heard back from them.
Again, Thank you for all the help and info. People like you make this forum a valuable asset to all who visit this site.
You're welcome, my friend.
Sadly, Android Auto has very limited capabilities and many, many restrictions with regard to its usage and modifications at this point. Please note that Android Auto is not the same as Android. If your car unit supports only AA, your experience will be very limited. However, there are many members who are trying to make the best of it and developing new ways of tweaking it (AA Mirror mentioned above is an example).
IMHO, you're better off with a head unit that has its own processor and runs complete Android by itself. The possibilities with these head units are endless as they feature a complete Android environment unlike Android Auto.
Hope you have a great weekend.

There are many available online. You can also ask your local car accessories shop. Its better to invest in something with good specs though it might be a little pricey.

You asked which head unit runs Android by itself. My answer was for that.
If you want to run APKs or mirror your screen to your head unit, you will have to root your phone, I guess.
