Help: Confused About which Model #s and Carrier Variants. - LG V40 Questions & Answers

I want to purchase a LG V40 Thinq to work with Cricket Wireless, but I do not want to be restricted to GSM carriers only as I'm considering moving to an alternate provider later on. I also like the ability to unlock the bootloader or use an alternate firmware but I'd also like to have OEM options for updates which is why I'm posting here. I figured this community knows the most and most of what I've learned about this handset came from these forums.
From what I read the T-Mobile version is very hard to unlock, the Sprint network isn't something I'm considering due to QOS in my area, and the AT&T version is viable for Cricket but OTA updates are locked unless you have an AT&T Post Paid Active Service, Verizon is Unlocked for GSM and is compatible with a few other MVNOs I would consider changing to. From My understanding the model number for the Verizon variant is LM-V405UAB and should come carrier unlocked for GSM networks. Only downside is Visual Voicemail isn't an option but I do not care about that as I don't use my carrier's voicemail system on my phone.
Anything else I'm missing or is there a resource that can better advise me someone can point me towards?
Thanks in Advance,

Why not just buy the unlocked variant, LM-V405QA, from Best Buy? It's on sale for $399.99 right now.

I suggest you to buy the LG V50 ThinQ any of the 4 Koreans models. Or the european variant. Stay away from the US versions.
LM-V500N Koreans and LM-V500EM European.
Prices starting from as little as 350 USD on eBay.

I wasn't aware Best Buy offering an Unlocked Version of the Phone. Every time I was searching for devices only the carrier versions were coming up. It's actually selling for ~350USD atm but not showing any stock either online or in store locally. Shame because that is right around the budget I am willing to spend for this device. Thanks DiZzyBonne
Inerent, I was looking at the V50 as well. Roll out for 5G is pretty slow in my area and I didn't really see that much of a Spec difference to warrant the upgrade over the v40. I definitely do see the difference in the V30/v35 which is how I settled on the V40. I usually turn over cell phones every 1-1.5 years buying previous gen over current to allow for vetting of any manufacturing or support issue. Moving back to LG products after bad experience with previous G5 I owned. It's a bit further compounded by the fact I don't see a lot of them available through normal channels. I like the phone but it will probably be my next verse current choice.

It's still available on their website. It's $399.99, the only way you'll get it for $349.99 is if you activate it with Best Buy. I just bought the unlocked for $399.99 two weeks ago.

He mentioned the ability to unlock the bootloader -> Only the V500EM can do that atm, thats what i meant that. You cant unlock the bootloader of the V500N (yet, till someone find an exploit).

Wound up purchasing a LM-V405QA7. I'm less concerned about bootloader unlocking and firmware updates provided LM-V405QA7 is running Pie which it should according to the LG support channel.
Thank you all for your help. It's a pretty solid phone from my use of AT&T version. I've just had a string of bad luck with refurbished handsets not being properly repaired or locked IMEI numbers.

Import to UK

Hi,
I would like to purchase a Note 5 - ideally Dual Sim (but doesn't have to be) in the UK. Several sites offer a 32GB Dual Sim Variant. I don't really want 32GB but if the price is right I would consider it. A few offer 64GB but at crazy prices.
Several site offer a dual sim variant that seems to support 1800Mz 4G - which should work on Three/EE UK. They don't advertise the model number well though.
Any other gotchas? The warranty isn't super critical to me as I tend to keep phones for only 6 months and then sell on. I know I will take a resale hit, but I can probably live with that.

Mate I ordered mine yesterday Note 5 dual sim 64GB gold for £638 from Ebay (Should be delivered by Monday/Tuesday). similar to you I am not much worried about warranty as I keep changing my phones in 3-4 months.
The only thing I hate about Ebay and importing phones is VAT charges.
Have a look there are some decent prices there for dual and single sim variants.
So annoyed at Samsung for not releasing it here in UK.
I hope it works out well for you. I have imported a few phones - but usually for much less money. Fingers crossed the seller marks it with a very low value as otherwise the tax will push that up quite a bit.
And yeah, its frustrating that its not going to be released officially soon. There were some rumours of the 28th - maybe some announcement - but I doubt it.
n920i
I bought a 64gb N920i from ebay this week
I can confirm that it doesnt recognise 4G on Vodafone however when I pop a EE sim in, 4G is picked up straight away
Do you like it? Worth the money? And do you mind saying how much you paid?
The N920i varient doesnt support band 20 (800 Mz) so it wont work on vodafone 4G. EE and Three use 1800 Mz so technically is is 4G but 800 Mz is where you wanna be. the AT&T version seems to support band 20 though.
I have both the unlocked a version and the international I version. Vodafone works on an unlocked a version. Only issue with at&t is bloat ware which can be disabled and the locale being set to us only. This means the date format is wrong. Other than that can confirm it works on Vodafone

In the same boat and looking at the Note 5 N920A. I cant justify spending almost a thousand euros on the edge plus.
Can you confirm if the N920A works flawlessly with LTE on Vodafone (Band 20)
Yes works flawlessly on the A version. Would recommend 64gb version. Got mine from here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151791148...49&var=450987358361&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

Whats the story with "Clean IMEI"?
I just did a brief search on ebay for the N920A and i can see "Clean IMEI" in the description of some phones
My understanding is that it means that the phone is not a contract phone (under finance) and that AT&T do not have the ability to blacklist the phone and prevent it working on their networks.

Does the n920A version works with all 4g networks in the UK or only with Vodafone and O2? When you received it was it with broken seal?
I have ordered n9208 have been told all networks work but three UK.
>920A
>920T
>920C
>920CD (dual sim)
these are compatible with all european 4G/lte bands/operators (FDD B20/800mhz enabled)
no FDD B20/800mhz band on most other models:
>9208
>9200
>920i
etc etc
this means no 4G on three UK

Help me choose the right note 5 :(

Hello I need to choose a note 5 for me. I have a note 4 right now from verizon with unlimited data but they started charging 20$ extra for unlimited and along with other features on my account it adds up to over 100$ per line. I want to switch to straight talk most likely and since it is cheaper and they have good coverage where I live, but only thing is I know only sprint and verizon use cdma and others use gsm. I need a gsm unlocked but not sure which to choose, there is i920i i920a and so on. I also travel a lot to europe so I need a phone that will support local sim cards as I am there, would someone please give me some insight on which model of note 5 I need to choose.

Currently using N920i in Boston. But I don't know why it has weaker signal than iPhone 6.
The LTE and 4G on my iPhone 6 shows very strong signal, while Note 5 has strong signal if you use HSDPA.

Where are you getting your Exynos?

I dont know where I will be getting the exynos version as I havent purchased an international phone for its bootloader before. To the veterens, where are you getting yours? Clove? B&h? I might need some buying tips
Interested in the as well
Same here, does anyone know if Amazon will have pre-orders for the international version? Thanks
I've purchased from Clove, Handtec,Expansys, Amazon, and eBay. IMO fulfilled by Amazon is easily the best if you can find competitive pricing. That because their policies make returns a piece of cake. eBay is a crap shoot. As an example some eBay Note 7 buyers were torched (get it, torched ) others got their money back. My Note 7 went back to Amazon with minimal fuss.
Nothing wrong with Clove and Handtec, they just aren't as easy to deal with as Amazon when things go wrong. If you do order from them they sometimes ask for extra information about your card due to issues with international fraud, that's normal.
@krabman What about warranty when buying an international?

If ur buying to unlock booatlader then there is no question about warranty
International law requires that manufacturers provide warranty only in the country where something is sold. There are laws in many ountries designed to help deter grey market sales that allow OEMs to deny warranty on products not sold from authorized outlets or from owners who were not the original purchaser. The outfits I mentioned will take the phone back without problem if you received a damaged or DOA unit, from there you have to check the point of sale policies. As an example Handtec would take a phone back and send it in for warranty the last time I purchased from them. I didn't have to but what I noted at the time was that I would have been responsible for shipping from here to there and back.
IMO the international phone game might not be a good idea for those who are spending their last pennies buying in.

Really wanted the gear 360 camera but not buying the snapdragon variant just to get it.
My last pre-order from Clove in the UK was super. Three day shipping over a weekend for delivery to the US. I pre-ordered from Clove again. Yes, a bit painful for the first time credit-card use I have to admit. And for my first purchase from Clove I was not happy about them charging the CC immediately when their web site at the time explicitly stated they would not. But supposedly the Note 8 will only be a 3 week wait. Clove has not asked me for payment yet either.
I have been ripped off on Swappa too many times so I won't bother with anything on there except for well know businesses that list there. Tiger Direct was excellent on Swappa.
Currently there seems to be a Samsung offer of a free DEX in the UK with pre-order purchase. I am guessing it will be impossible to get Samsung to mail a DEX offer to the US.
Looks like the Note 8 carrier band list is identical for the S8 verses the Note 8. I'll assume the Exynos bootloader will be unlocked. Just a matter of how long it will take the developers to come up with a TWRP version, and ROMS. With the S8 I only had to wait a week as the UK release was later than other countries.
For me, the big risk will be the ability to extract the CSC for the US carriers. With the S8, it was nicely done by one of the developers but it is not known if he will expand that for the Note 8.
So you don't think we will get the dex even though we pre ordered an international note 8? Also what's the issue with the first time credit card payment? And one last question. I saw some thing on vat but it said 0.00 do we have to pay anything for that or any other taxes?

Does the Exynos model have all the correct bandwidths to operate properly in the U.S.? I thought I read somewhere that Exynos phones don't always have the best reception in the U.S. I'm torn between the International model and the U.S. Unlocked. I want the option to root and run custom roms, but not at the cost of losing any function. Plus, I'm on Sprint. Does the Exynos International model work with CDMA?

Is there anywhere I can buy the international version with 24 month financing? I sure wish Samsung would let us buy an international version from their website.
@krabman I meant if their was a one year Samsung warranty for stuff like the display is just defective or if power button fails 3 months in.

When I go to the link you provided, it shows 'From £724.17 exVAT / From £869.00 incVAT'. £869.00 would be $1112.82. Is that right? When I go to the Checkout page, it says 'Your order below contains a product which is currently unavailable and its final price is unknown. Therefore you can still place the order below but no payment will be taken - you will be asked to pay for this order when those details are confirmed.' As of right now it does say 'VAT (20%) £0.00', so I'm unsure if any tax will be charged. It also includes a disclaimer stating 'Samsung’s region lock stops use of this handset within your chosen country unless activated with a European SIM. I agree for Clove Technology to break the seal on the box, activate the phone and remove the region lock by completing a 5 minute call on the handset.'. Also, depending on my credit card, I'm probably going to get hit with a conversion fee, right? I haven't come across any site to order this model in USD. Are there not any at this time? I'm thinking maybe once the phone comes out there will be. Any suggestions or ideas for ordering this variant for use in the US? Thanks

But I don't know what model this is probably just an unlocked US version SM-N950UZKAXAA which is a no-go if you like having fun

Help with model numbers.

Just wondering if anyone could advise me about the different model numbers. I would like to get a note 8 for use in the UK. I don't want one on network contract. Apart from buying direct from Samsung, there are some really good prices from online vendors. Some different region numbers having the attraction of bigger storage, different colours etc. The N9500 for example. I assume most model numbers would work on uk networks and obviously you can set the language to anything you like, so what are the disadvantages of importing from another region? Would I not be able to set up any Samsung warranty?
Thank you for any advice.
the 950F or 950F/duos (dual sim) you should be able to get it on amazon UK for around 750
---------- Post added at 12:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:02 PM ----------
obviously if you want 256 gb version you probably need to import but the 64gb with a good sd card should do for 90% of people
Thanks for that. Yes, storage options would be more than enough for me. I was just curious about about what the differences in model numbers would actually be in usage & warranty.
well if you buy unlocked from Samsung uk or amazon UK you will just have to register it with Samsung for 24 months warranty, you might only get 12 months or none if you buy from outside the EU
I see. Thanks very much.

New Samsung Note 8 for EAU

Hello, I just bought a new Samsung Note 8 on Amazon, from a 3rd party seller to save 100 pounds, and after it was shipped I found that the tracking number they gave me pointed the delivery origin from Dubai. When I got my phone I found out it was meant for the Emirate Arab United region, I wanted the phone to be for the UK. Are there any features or updates or hardware limitations I should be aware of? Is there a way to change the firmware to UK version without losing my warranty? And even on that note I'm not even sure what kind of warranty I have for the phone or if I can even get it repaired under warranty.
So far I am very happy with how the phone looks, feels and performs, coming from Samsung Note 4, just unsure if I can use Samsung Pay for example, one annoying thing is that I am unable to get Google Now launcher to run on the phone and the Bixby (swipe left) shows me video content from the Arab region.
Warranty will be an issue if you didn't purchase third-party insurance through the Reseller or Amazon. If you haven't yet, see if this is a possibility. Samsung rarely offers international warranty support on devices sold outside their intended regions.
I've had two devices from United Arab Emirates (S7 Edge and Note 8). All F/DS models use the same software base so you can flash any firmware intended originally for Vodafone, O2, or Three. Since I roam between the United States and Canada, I installed Latin American firmware. I have no issues with connectivity except being unable to roam on CDMA (Sprint/Verizon) but to my experience/knowledge, all networks in your country are GSM-based.
Hi,
For the warranty: NO European warranty. Seller Warranty only. You can change firmware by downloading Uk firmware wi Samfire software( you can find it on xda) and flash it with odin software( You can find it on xda too). if you can't manage to find the softwares, tell me and i will post the links.
the only significant difference will be the Oem unlock bootloader. I Think but not sure that you will have to wait the168 h if you flash a Custom the see The oem toogle in the developper option appear but there is a fi x.
On my side, i've already bought note8 dual sim on Samsung shop and after trigging something, The Oem option disappeared. i sold it and waited a little and hop... on Samsung shop a big discount appeared. I've bougth my second for 649€. No need to pass thought a 3rd part seller to Save money. If you have any other question don't hesitate.

I've bougth my second for 649€. No need to pass thought a 3rd part seller to Save money. If you have any other question don't hesitate.

Can you please link me to the stuff needed to flash UK firmware?
The phone is bought now and I am reluctant to give it back, even with the warranty limitations (I had enough stress trying to get a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 within my budget). I just hope everything will be ok for the next 3 years (at least) that I intend to keep the phone as my daily driver. But I am happy I got the Exynos and Dual Sim version, only wish it was blue color.

You can get the firmware from sammobile.com, updato.com or using the SamFirm tool. The firmware can be flashed using the latest version of Odin. Make sure you get the right firmware for your device (i.e. N950F firmware). Read up a lot first if you haven't done it before

Please can you update how you got on with firmware procedure, is there any difference?
I'm in the same situation as you, just bought a new but cheap note 8 but I also got a EAU - Emirate Arab United region phone and want UK firmware.
Edit. Nvm I've updated to N950FXXU4CRGA_N950FOXM4CRGA_BTU today. All seems well.
