Fairly new Mi 9 user and quickly found the extra MIUI features and ads invasive so switching off most of those features via advice in forums.
However, I can't find any description for the Root option which is found in the Security app under "Security Scan Settings". It's under a sub-heading called "Multiple Items".
Could it be a toggle to scan various items and locations (the other toggle is "System updates"), but very confusing and not confident switching anything without knowing what it does.
This is MIUI 11, fully updated global version.

I recently retired my son's Galaxy Tab 2 (7") for a new SM-710 (updated OTA to 5.1.1). The old Tab 2 (running CM12) was setup in multi-user mode with him as a restricted user. It worked great - I could limit his access on an app by app basis, his data didn't cross-over into my data, he could log into services with his own account etc etc.
So I had intended to setup his new SM-710 the same way - me as the primary user, him as a restricted user. One HUGE problem - the Samsung (TouchWiz) version of Lollipop seems to be missing a critical menu item that is present on stock Lollipop devices. I can't find the "add users from lockscreen" option in the USER settings. On stock devices there is a menu button (top right) where this option is located. It is usually defaulted to unchecked, however on the Samsung version, the device behaves as if the option is checked, and yet there is no menu item to uncheck. This results in both the "GUEST" and "ADD USER" items appearing in the multi-user lockscreen menu when the device is locked. This is a problem for a multitude of reasons. My son could simply create a new user from the lockscreen and use that account to bypass all the restrictions I have placed on his account. Moreover, anyone else could do the same thing, making it impossible to secure the device.
I have tried a few fixes that I found here and elsewhere. All of them required me to root the device, none of them worked (build.prop edits, sql db edits etc). Happy to describe in detail what I tried, but didn't want to make the post any longer that it had to be). Has no one else noticed this problem/error/bug? Am I missing something obvious?
Any help / insight would be appreciated.
Have a look at Samsungs' "Kids Mode", available in the Galaxy Apps store. It is supposed to be their solution for handing your tablet or phone to your children. It requires a pin code to leave the Kids Mode. However, I suspect it is targeted at rather youngish kids.
My T815, which is still at 5.0.2, doesn't even have the options you describe. I'm a bit annoyed that Samsung has spent time disabling features that just come for free from Google.
The build.prop edit should have worked according to other threads. I'm not rooted, so I can't tell.
Hey guys! MIUI 9 have one feature which I would have in MIUI 10 namely carrier name in status bar.
In MIUI 10 carrier name is shown only in the look screen but in MIUI 9 carrier is shown everywhere.

I want 1 million dollars in my bank account!
Looks like they removed it.
If you wish to have this particular feature you'll have to make feature request in their forum and as far as I know they barely listen to users/customer with feature request(s).
There's less or no chance that they'll add it back as looking at thier history of removing feature and not adding it back.
They have removed so many useful features and not added back despite huge requests.
I am talking little off topic but worth mentioning.
There are so many useful requests from many users on their website are pending and they are mostly making their software with tons of advertisement and making inbuilt app requirements of needing user permission to contact, phone, message and other private information permissions such as weather app(maybe clouds going to call before they start raining)
Not to forget all MIUI apps have default internet connection turned on and can't be turn off and all MIUI apps collect user data and can be found this under settings-> additional setting-> authorization and revoke.
Additionally they don't get revoke many times despite trying for many times and have set 10 second waiting time so that user get frustrated and don't turn them off.
I have recently acquired a redmi note 9. My first experience with MIUI
I was surprised that some system applications display publicity. That is not acceptable. I want any undesired publicity. Less so if some user data is collected to target the publicity.
Is this publicity a problem with my phone only, or do all MIUI ROM display publicity?
Does anyone know if this publicity collects user data?
Is there any way to remove the publicity? Or removing the applications displaying it? Or any way to block the publicity on those applications?
Many thanks in advance
By "publicity", do you mean advertising?
If I remember correctly during setup there is the option to show or hide advertising - I've always declined advertising on the two Xiaomi phones I've owned
Also I'm in the EU - I think the international / EU MIUI distribution has more limited advertising than elsewhere
Where are you based and what firmware are you using?
I'm using the stock build of MIUI 11.0.5.0 QJOEUXM
Either way, I don't get any marketing at all from the OS (I use a different launcher too and don't use any MIUI apps, aside from the camera)
AdGuard deals with any unwanted advertising within 3rd party apps

Hi Thesoupthief
Thanks for your reply.
I really do not remember any option to show or hide advertising. I will clear all data and run set up again. This time I will put special attention on any advertising options
I am using V11.0.4.0.QJOEUXM (MIUI11).
Which launcher do you use?
Did you uninstall MIUI system apps (is that possible?) or did you just install different apps?
Which apps do you suggest replacing MIUI ones?
Thanks in advance
Hi, you might try updating through settings to get the point update to MIUI 11.0.5.0 - unlikely to make any difference in terms of marketing, but nice to have the latest
I tried a few different launchers and settled with CPL - custom pixel launcher - it allows you to swipe right for Google feed etc, which I use a lot
I still have some MIUI apps (most can't be uninstalled without root, though some can be) though have Hidden them all from the app drawer to reduce clutter. I'm more comfortable with the Google alternatives ("better the devil you know...")
I was hoping to be able to use a GCam mod to replace the camera app, but the only one available for this phone at the moment is a bit slow and janky - I've been pretty happy with shots I've taken with the stock camera (though the watermark is pretty offensive, until you find the "off" setting!)
EDIT - a bit of further reading and advice you might find helpful in this article - https://www.androidauthority.com/remove-ads-xiaomi-miui-1019139/
Found this post, very helpful for disabling advertisings on MIUI:

After receiving my Chinese version of the OP10 Pro, I waited for over a month for the international ROM expecting a seamless flashing experience through "Local install" like in past phones. Unfortunately OP10 Pro seems to have settled in this regard and this is no longer possible, so I decided to make the most out of ColorOS... and was pleasantly surprised.
I've used ADB App Control to debload Breeno, HeyTap and some of the Oppo stuff and the result is pretty good. So far I've disabled:
Breeno
Breeno Scan
Breeno Touch
Calendar
HeySynergy
HeyTap Cloud
Omoji
OPSynergy
Please note that I have not tried OxygenOS for this phone so I'm not sure if some of these features are also available:
Pros so far
The battery is incredible - I'm getting up to 2 days if using the phone with IM/browsing, a full day if I throw in a couple hours of PUBG and some other heavy usage apps.
Call recording works by default
System Cloner - surprisingly useful feature, not only can clone apps but now can also clone the entire system. You can switch from the lockscreen with a different fingerprint or password, and you can even "hide" the secondary system by removing the system cloning options from the main system menu, in which case it becomes only accessible by inputting the alternative password or fingerprint in the lock screen. Super useful to separate life and work, increase privacy in a high censorship country where stuff like VPN apps are forbidden, may be subject to "phone searches", etc.
Privacy Protection - many apps require personal info access to work, and there's no way around it. With this feature you can select which apps with the personal info access permission will get blank data, providing a workaround to being able to use the app while protecting privacy (assuming everything works as advertised)
There's a few other interesting Privacy tools like a Permission use records and the possibility to hide or lock apps
Cons so far
ColorOS comes a bit bloated with Breeno, HeyTap, Omoji and other features that even after disabled remain in the main menus (I've only disabled the main apps so it's possible I'm forgetting related apps)
The internal password manager is local and I can't use my Google saved passwords to auto-fill my apps within android
When transferring phone data from OP8 Pro to OP10 Pro the SMS transferred with switched SIM cards, strangely.
I'd like to hear from ColorOs users about which other features you found useful and some debloating feedback about what else is worth removing!
I hated coloros on my 9RT. Battery life was great as well, but that's because everything except 5 apps are launched at startup and you don't get background updates ultra you open the app every few hours. Phone manager sucks, but I made due with it. You can't change your default msg app.
Let's try to fix issues that may occur after turning off MIUI optimisation.
This guide assumes your unit:
Is bootloader unlocked (hence... ),
Has proper magisk installation,
Has MIUI optimizations turned off,
Has Developer Options turned on
update: MIUI is assumed 12.5 (not 13)
Let's start!
No Floating Windows
read this somewhere else that this function is lost after disabling MIUI optimization, and indeed the button in overview mode doesn't do anything.Solution:
By accident found how to activate it:Under Developer options turn on options related to freeform windows and force resizable any activity.2. File uploads via browser , image sharing between appsThis issue is very annoying and I didn't notice it earlier due to the browser I use.File uploads won't work, and there is no error message or indication that something is wrong. In my use case for browsers , was trying to import my ublock configuration tI the Mull browser but nothing gets imported. For images was trying to share a downloaed qr code to a barcode app to decrypt it but the share option just ends without anything happening.Solution:unfortunately read it elsewhere that this will only work by turning MIUI optimisation back on.It appears that those certain actions under miui has been locked down and allowed if using the miui file picker (which activates with miui optimization on). If off, file picker reverts to standard android file browser, which gets blocked (silently! ) by the system.I didn't notice it because I was using fennec f-droid 68 not the latest which doesn't trigger this issue. Any recent version browser either chromium based or fenix based will have this issue. For images sharing. I instead used the actual app to directly open the qr code I needed scanned to bypass the sharing issue.Update @ 07-2022 post MIUI 13: with all things equal except by being on MIUI 13 I observed that limitation described above with regards to uploading files isn't there anymore. I've used Mull (Felix based), Ungoogled Chromium and Vivaldi and upload works.Sharing images to other apps also work now (ex. Sending qr image in gallery to scan by secscanqr works). Will post more later.Do share your fixes too!
Updated to MIUI 13,noticed file uploads and image sharing between apps works now, updated 1st post to reflect.
Few days ago I disabled MIUI optimization because microG asked for it. After that I couldn't unlock my phone. The unlock screen shows up for a second than it goes black. After i took out SD card and SIM card, i could unlock, when I put it back in, i can't. Enabeling optimization and deleting Vanced and microG didn't fix it.
It was freshly installed OS, so I didn't change a lot of settings beside unlocking developers mode and turning off optimization.
Now optimization is on. Any idea how to fix it if it happens again?
The Miui video Toolbox stopped working after disabling MiUi optimization.
Also I have been using a pixel theme to make the icons round. That also stopped working and the icons are cube now after I disabled MiUi optimization.
