Weird issue with notifications - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

Hi all wondering if anyone has experienced this or know how to fix it but i've been having weird issues with notifications and updating/installing apps.
What's happening is randomly my phone will stop receiving all notifications from any app until i manually open a app and then it realizes that i've missed a bunch of messages.
Above is the main issue although it seems to be linked with play store somehow cause when the issue is happening apps will stall while installing at 99% until the phone is restarted at which point all the issues are fixed for a period of time before it happens again.
I've tried:
- Factory resetting the phone
- DND is not on
- Battery optimization is turned off (including all relevant modes)
- Power mode is set to high performance
- Removing google account and adding it again
- Clearing cache and storage for play store
Any help will be amazing..

Android Police had an article about that recently. Bug in Play Store, should be fixed by now.

I've always had this issue, cannot get app notification counters to work

SystemUpdateService always on

Hi all,
I just installed cm-11-20140609-SNAPSHOT-M7-galaxysmtd.zip and I have a big problem with SystemUpdateService which is always on and draining my battery. The phone will not go in deep sleep, it will just stay awake.
I tried all of the following:
1. Installed Disable Service and went on to disable SystemUpdateService, but it was already disabled.
2. Installed Autorun Manager and went on to disable com.google.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateService$Receiver. but it was already disabled
3. I copied FOTAkill.apk in the System folder with RS Root Explorer and restarted, but the problem kept persisting
The only way to stop is is to disable GoogleServiceFramework, which will cause my phone to display the "unfortunatelly google play has stopped" error now and then, which is annoying and just a crude fix to the problem.
Does anybody know what else I could do?

and i am not found this problem?
try wakelock detector to see what's keeping it awake http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2179651
Starting today, I got this issue as well on a Nexus 4 device running the M7 snapshot with hellscore kernel. The first 2 steps you took didn't work for me too. Didn't know about #3 this far.

Doesn't sound pretty, but how did you do this? Still better than running out of battery halfway through the day, I'd guess.
pryerlee: WLD says exactly that - Google Play Services -> SystemUpdateService, for me currently 4h23m, being 100% of the time - plus it says "x2" (what's that precisely?)
not sure if this will help but read tho the post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2388243 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2378962

Just linking the other way round as well, maybe it'll help - the issue popped up on CM forums too: http ://forum.cyanogenmod. com/topic/96459-systemupdateservice-wakelock-on-cm11-m7-massive-battery-drain/

I did all of the options, the service is closed yet it was still running.
I compromised and installed Paranoid Android 4.4.2 and the problem is no more.
So just trying stuff without any deeper thoughts, I just did two things, locked the phone afterwards and now the wakelock seems to be gone:
1. I enabled SystemUpdateService using Disable Service App, which had already been disabled when we first looked.
2. I looked into the CM update function, where - having selected all stable releases - nothing was showing and refreshing didn't work. Got the idea to look into Disable Service App again, and found that UpdateCheckService of CyanogenMod-Updater was disabled. Enabled it, refreshed CM updater, got a list of stable releases.
My beginner's guess would be #1 did it - but why was #2 even an issue in the first place?
Running CM 11 M7 Snapshot 6/9/14 msm8960 on Motorola Atrix HD MB886. Have seen something similar.
Details:
- Have not seen this issue for weeks of running this ROM until now.
- This seems to have started a few (2?) days ago after an update. Google Play Music, Maps, Search, Drive, Sheets, and Docs all received updates in the past week.
- Typically, based on the configuration and usage of my phone, when the screen on is off the phone is in Deep Sleep (percentage in high 90s).
- At some point after some app or service is run, the phone stops going into deep sleep.
- Better Battery Stats shows SystemUpdateService as having partial wakelock for about the same percentage of time that the phone should be in deep sleep (high 90s).
- SystemUpdateServices does not seem to be hogging battery even considering that it might be folded into another category, but the wakelock causes the phone to use battery more than twice as fast as in deep sleep.
- A restart clears it up until the SystemUpdateService is invoked again by... whatever... seems to be something I do manually - still chasing it.
IronTechmonkey,
confirming your descriptions, up to the point where you describe that a reboot clears the issue up until a certain unknown event some time after boot. This is clearly not the case for me.
Instead, I was just able to reproduce the behaviour I described above. The wakelock remained gone since my last post, then I had to reboot for another reason, and it was there again basically from the first second (100% awake time since boot). Looking into Disable Service, SystemUpdateService was unchecked / disabled - again I checked / enabled it, and the wakelock stopped immediately.

I've been able to consistently replicate the problem 100% by running the Google Play app when the phone has a data connection.
If I run the Google Play app when the phone has no data connection the problem does not occur until the next time the phone has a data connection, whether or not Google Play is running.
I do have all auto-updating disabled in google and elsewhere which makes this easier to chase.
See if it happens when your phone has no data connection, with apps and google things set not to autoupdate.
As for the temporary fix: Like you said: Disable Service app, System Apps list, Google Play Services, SystemUpdateService enable/disable.
I'll try with those conditions asap. No time just now.
However, doesn't this all raise the question why SystemUpdateService is disabled? Shouldn't this default to enabled?
Or to put it differently: Is enabling SystemUpdateService a workaround, or is it being disabled the issue?
I also had the wakelock on my P990.
systemupdateservice was disabled in gooogle service framework, but it was still active as receiver and actice receiver in google play services - disabling it there solved the wakelock for me.

Now that I've tested during a work day I'm seeing the problem occur more pervasively as some of you are
- It starts any time I go on line.
- Reboot sometimes but not always fixes
- Toggling using Disable Service app no longer works reliably
- Must stop Google Services Framework to fix issue until next time I go on line
= Royal PITA!
As for your question; It is not uncommon in the world of computers (and phones) to have to toggle a setting on/off or off/on to get the setting to stick, especially when something deeper in the system is turning it on and off without a flag letting the user know.
Just summarizing what was found on the CM forums where I tried to link previously:
Seemingly permanent workaround: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53739230&postcount=5031
Related fix, merged into nightly since Jun 29: http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/66894/
Haven't tried that workaround, had no time to go for the nightly... hopefully the fix will already be included in the M8 stable release(?).

Indeed hoping the same, and it looks like M8 and the nightly to which you refer will not yet be using the KK bootloader (great for my old Moto AtrixHD MB886 w/JB bootloader). Found that same XDA post referring to Autorun Manager which looks like a good temporary fix - working good so far. Does not hold setting through restart but still more effective than others..
I've the same issue here since 2/3 days on my 9001 running CyanogenMod 11.0 by ADC-Team - Release 8, maybe it was some app update occurred recently... I didn't have any issue with the same rom before.
---------- Post added at 10:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:00 AM ----------
I can confirm that downgrading Google Play Services to version 4.3.25 is a working workaround.

Hey everyone,
i can confirm the issue for CM11 M7 and it all started with the recent update to Google Play Services 5 v84.
The workaround mentioned before works very well until a reboot ... lets hope the best for CM11 M8!
Best workaround I've found:
"Finally I was able to block the SystemUpdateService wakelock, using this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...com.rs.autorun
go to settings, enable the option to show system entries
find google play services and disable:
SystemUpdateService$Receiver
SystemUpdateService$ActiveReceiver
SystemUpdateService$SecretCodeReceiver
done... no more wakelock and it didn't break anything, syncs all work ok
I know this app doesn't look the best, but I tried others like "Android Tuner Free", "Disable Services", "Gemini App Manager", etc, but they allowed me to only disable the main service and didn't show the other receivers that had to be disabled."
As the other user said, this is all caused by the Google Play Services update that has being rolling out this last week. The solution above is reboot proof (At least for me). Thanks to the user who posted it.

Note SM-N920C No notifications until I wake screen. Tried Heartbeat fix. Doesn't fix!

This has been happening randomly for a few months. I can go days when notifications are fine and they come through on my phone immediately. Then, for no reason, there are days when no notification show at all until I wake my phone.
They're clearly being blocked and my phone only attempts to pull them in when I wake it. Like a doze setting
It all started around the time Marshmallow 6.01 landed on the phone.
All battery saving optimisation settings are off.
All notifications are set to on.
I have tried EVERY app that I can find to set the Google heartbeat interval to a lower time. None solve the issue.
Factory reset doesn't fix it.
I have (always on) fiber internet so idle timeout settings on the router cannot be to blame for killing the Google heartbeat check.
I have tried it on mobile data only and it is the same
Other people online have had the same issues on other Samsung devices but I can't find anyone suffering from this on the Note 5.
Could it be an issue (somehow) with my Google account, since all notifications have to be pushed through this?
Worried that if I get a new phone I'll still have the same issue.
Any help would be appreciated.
are u using greenify??? what android u have 6.0.1 ??? did u try on smart manager / battery / to not optimize app u want get notification????
N920c/64g/cc n7 port v3/ arise sound/ doulby /xposed greenify+powernap+amplify
Not got Greenify.
Not enabled any power saving at all.
All apps are set to notify
Either the phone is blocking notifications randomly, or my Google account is.

P20 Pro Vibrates Randomly

So, over the last few weeks I've found that my P20 Pro vibrates for no (known reason), every now and again. Usually multiple times per day.
I've tried turning it off and back on, killing the apps, checking for updates, turning notifications off on most apps.
Has anyone had a similar problem and /or has any way of diagnosing or fixing it?
I have experienced the same thing, so you're not totally alone if that helps. I haven't found the cause yet either. I suspect it might be WiFi+ vibrating when the source switches back and forth so it'll happen in stints for me.
i have the same thing and i think i might found the reason, i have some muted WhatsApp chat groups and it seems like that every now and then when i get messages in these groups my phone vibrates although i muted them . There is no notification but a short vibration.
Another thing that bothers me more is when receiving an whats app message my phone vibrates once short and after that the way i set it up in the settings...
I begin to get it after an update. hope to see a solution soon.
No
I believe I've found the cause and solution to the Huawei mate 20 pro random vibrations.
I installed a notification logger from the play store and found that it was logging notifications of repetitive image downloads completing that lined up with every buzz.
If you go into settings, apps and choose to see system apps in the menu, you can force close the download and download manager apps. If you then clear the data and cache from each, you should find the phantom notifications stop.
I haven't had one in days now, and it was all the time.
I hope this is of help.
This happens to me a lot. Its mainly due to voice recognition thinking I'm am speaking to the phone. It happens randomly when watching TV, at work on even in the train. There's no specific key work that triggers it,. It happens at random. This is my issue with the random vibration but your could be a different reason although

Mine was definitely the download manager continuously redownloading Google photos images. Force stop, clear data, clear cache of the download and download manager system apps and mine has been fine now for a week. Try it!
Had the same issue months ago. Cleaning cache and data of stock download manager app solved it for me.
Mine started doing same yesterday ?
I have the mate 20 pro, and it's just started randomly vibrating with no notification
So my phone is now starting to randomly vibrate like bursts of short vibrations that last a while, but there's no notifications or anything? I don't know how to find the "download manager" to check if it's that. I'm not sure which apps to force stop. It's really annoying though.
Do you use Textra? Happened to my wife's s8 and she just uninstalled then reinstalled Textra to make the problem go away.
I have cleared the download manager and everything else several times, but it only works for few days even hours and starts again. I'm not sure if it activities itself again after I download something, but nevertheless, this just shouldn't happen. How can I disable download manager permanently (or preferably just the vibrations, as I assume DM is there for a reason)
Had the same issue. No problem from textra, for me it was google drive. I uninstalled it, cleared cahe and data and I am now using OneDrive. I haven't experienced any random vibrations since then.
Mate 20 X had similar issue after EMUI 9.1 upgrade and turned out to be contacts sync system app constantly trying to sync contacts. Force stop and cleared data and all good now.
I have the same issue on regular mate 20 since the last software update to EMUI 9.1.0. All the suggested solutions here did not resolve the issue. If someone has more suggestions please share
I fixed it. It's a system application called "Contacts Sync" disabling it solved the issue for me.
Settings > apps > show system processes > search for Contacts Sync > disable and force close it

This didnt work for me, but i found another solution. I stopped almost all apps from autostart. except email and messangers. that immediately solved the issue and the phone boots much faster as well, nice sideeffect
You need to go into battery usage and then click on the individual app, then app launch.
I hope that helps

I just noticed this on my mate 20x on 9.1 on vibrate mode. Did your solution permanently resolve this issue or do you have to do it multiple times or after restarts?

Notifications Issue

Is anyone having issues with their notifications not coming through, or coming in super late, or having the same notifications coming up over and over? I'm expecting all three problems, it seems to be happening with every app for me except for calls and text. I factory reset the phone but that didn't fix the issue. If I restart the phone, then all my notifications that haven't physically gone into the app to check start pouring in. No idea what could be causing the issue and it's really starting to piss me off. I have already sent my phone in for repair cause my LTE data stopped working for no reason. I don't think both issues are related as I do have LTE data after they replaced some part.
Would appreciate if anyone has any ideas.
Thanks.

I had notification delays with gmail app, fixed it by turning off battery optimization for this specific app.

Some people may have battery saver on and this may cause late notifications. Also check in settings "auto sync", under accounts. I did have some late notifications issue with Gmail app and do know battery optimization usually is the cause, but it went away in couple of days after I bought the phone.
Thank you for the suggestions. I ended up turning on high performance mode. Let's see if that helps.

How'd this work out for you? This phone is horrible for notifications for me. It constantly doesn't send them until I actually pick up my phone, then suddenly I'll get 5-10 notifications at once. I've turned off EVERY bit of power saving that I can find. I only run in high performance mode 24/7 with all adaptive battery, power optimization, auto app sleep, etc turned completely off. I've also tried disabling all power saving and sleep in the specific app pages as well. I need to be more observant, but I think this is mostly with push notifications (ex, my 2FA app for work) rather than apps with timers to check for updates occasionally. I also have an issue with my wifi disconnecting while the screen is off sometimes which is highly annoying since my home presence detection is based on my phone being on the wifi, though last time it started doing that a reboot fixed it.
Unfortunately, a search proves that this is a widespread issue. At this point I've pretty much given up on this phone and am looking to replace it as soon as I find a suitable alternative. I'm just curious if it's a Samsung issue or a Pie issue that will occur on other phones as well.

Seems to be a general issue with android. Mine have gotten better recently. In addition to turning off battery optimization for any apps I want notifications for, i have done the following:
1. Wiped cache (under settings/app/storage), then rebooted into recovery mode and wiped the cache partition.
2. Gone into the setting and made sure apps I want notifications for are allowed to run in the background (settings/apps/select app for notifications/battery).
3. Allowed to run in background when on mobile networks (settings/apps/select app/mobile data/Allow Background Data Usage.
4. Gone into messages/settings/more settings/push message/changed toggle from "Prompt" to "Always".
Hope that helps.

It's gotten better for me. I enabled high performance mode but I had to keep going in and checking it a couple days after still even though it was enabled. Been a couple weeks now and the notifications I was missing before all seems to be coming in fine now. Time will tell though I guess lol
Are you also having trouble with apps updating? That was another problem I was having where I'd see apps needing to update, I'd start "update all" one app would download and then get stuck at 99% and it would just stay like that for about 40mins and prevent the other apps from updating. Then finally when it would finish the next one would do the same. It would literally take hours upon hours for 12 apps to update when it should only take a couple mins. That issue seems to be fixed for me now too.

Question Spotify is acting odd

This might be the app itself but I didn't have any issue on my S20. Since I updated the phone it randomly cuts out. Any ideas? Never on WiFi though...

Is it when the screen is off? Check it's not been put to sleep in battery settings
it seems that latest ROM updates (I think I have this on all AUB* ones) is weirdly strict on background activities and cuts every one of them. my whole device acts strangely - apps not showing notification or showing them late (hours later than they were supposed to show), my apps are not updating: I have to repeatedly FC play store, then clear its cache so that currently installing app changes state from downloading to installing, than do it again to change state fomr installing to installed etc. worked fine on AUA* ones. it is really annoying. btw I tried to clear cache and dalvik/art cache from recovery, but that did not help. I have not tried factory seset yet...
It seems that it was data corruption during regular OTA. Factory reset seems to fix problems for me.
I'll try a reset.. thankyou
Let's be honest, the Spotify app has issues too begin with. On my S21 and Pixel 4 it can be playing songs to my earbuds then suddenly stop running in the background on its own! Unlock the phone and itis still open in the foreground.
Perhaps it's time for a new music app if this is a known Spotify issue... But if it's not a Spotify issue, then check in your battery settings (as others have mentioned) to see if your phone automatically started putting it into "Sleep Mode".
