Face unlock Double tap to sleep - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

I use a widget called screen tap to lock or something or another for the double tap to sleep on any launcher. Have been using it for a while across a few phones. However when I got the S10 I just started using face unlock due to this slow and clunky FP sensor.....but I've discovered this issue where double tap to sleep with face unlock on makes the phone immediately wake back up to the lock screen for a second unlike pressing the power button which acts correctly. I tested it out on nova's built in settings without the widget (which I was using on one UI launcher) and it does the same thing so obviously it's some sort of conflict with face unlock and double tap to sleep. Anyone know why?

Wait, slow and clunky? Maybe off topic but mine is extremely consistent after they fixed it like 4 months ago. Maybe relearn prints and make sure you get the whole thumb scanned.
Also I have double tap to sleep setup on Nova using accessibility as screen lock method and tried your scenario with face unlock enabled, but did not encounter your issue on Android 10

Oh, I'm on cricket in the US , so still stuck on 9 (with no hope in sight for 10 lol). I've deleted them and reset them a few times now and idk it's just not as fast as I'm used to with capacitive ones, there's an extra second, even compared to the one in the OnePlus 7t I was using for a few days , it cannot compete. It works a lot better if you press hard and firm I guess, but again I'm not used to that. But yeah idk why it's doing that, did it to me on Nova too if I use double tap to sleep at all it immediately opens back up to the lock screen. I don't think it's looking for my face in that scenario either because it doesn't face unlock when it does it, but it definitely IS happening because of the face unlock because it doesn't happen if I turn it off altogether and use the double tap to sleep......if I press the power button to turn the screen off this does not happen.

Fingerprint scanner to unlock the phone question

Just picked up the note 5 a couple days ago. the fingerprint scanner works great, but I have the fingerprint option to unlock the phone selected and still most of the time all it wants me to do is swipe to unlock, occasionally asking to use the fingerprint. Is this normal? I'm under the assumption that it should require a fingerprint everytime you unlock.
It always asks for fingerprint for me, unless I'm doing the quick camera. It will say swipe home key, its asking you to clean off the button with your finger
I believe the combination of "screen timeout" and "lock timeout" settings will take care of this. However, I used to be able to just use fingerprint to unlock, and now (after last update maybe) I have to sometimes use swipe AND fingerprint which is annoying, and I can't figure out the combination of settings to adjust this.

Are you using any form of smart unlock, via location or bluetooth connections?

I am using SmartLock (both locations and bluetooth), and from running into another forum thread, I believe I'm also treating the Padlock icon wrong, where I was dragging it thinking it was there to be dragged, when really it was there to let me lock the phone (which half makes sense I guess), hence then requiring the Fingerprint unlock. Confusing, but makes more sense now.

I was doing the same thing, which is why I asked about smart lock because I think that is the only time you will come across this issue. The more you know!

Tap to Wake

Is tap to wake screen missing on Oreo? I don't see it in the normal place in the Display settings.
I think it is just missing from the phone and/or in a different spot.
A review notes that Oreo can come with double tap to wake:
http://www.gsmarena.com/android_80_oreo-review-1653p2.php (scroll to last paragraph)
Sony decided to not implement double tap to wake and sleep since XZs and XZ Premium, and recently released XZ1/XZ1 Compact phones follows that trend.
No idea why, it's such a useful feature.
People who don't like/use it can just not enable it, no need to remove the feature that's been a part of their phones since Z2 or Z3 I believe.
This is one of the best features, coupled with double tap to sleep. Useful when you sit your phone on a desk and you don't want to press the power button.
Shame they don't have it anymore.
I guess it's related to the finger print sensor, but agreed, should let people decide. I turned mine off on my Z3C as it kept going off in my pocket.
Damn, that's garbage. I love tap to wake.
Well whatever isn't on stock, a rom will eventually solve, right? That's why we're here.

I'm genuinely curious, why would the fingerprint sensor be related? Double tap to sleep/wake has always worked flawlessly on my Z5C, and so has the fingerprint sensor.
No idea - but I can't see why else they'd disable it apart from some sort of "user experience" rubbish.
Im probably going to return my XZ1 Compact because this tap to wake was used heavily for me whilst at work where i have gloves on. Being able to tap the screen on my Z5C to see my notifications without having to remove my gloves to use Fingerprint made things so much easier. I know they have glove mode, but i really dont like using it, especially when i have stuff on my gloves i dont want all over the screen.
Well done sony, even android Oreo is meant to include this feature, so not only do they remove a Sony festure its users love, they block it out of Android OS also.
Have you tried contacting Sony Support? There is a possibility that it was an oversight or a bug and they'll fix it.
Any updates on this? Any chance this feature could be re-enabled by the experts on here. This is honestly what's holding me up from buying this phone.
Have you already contacted Sony about this?

There's no way this was an oversight. It must've been a deliberate decision for some reason.

Yes and they say on their website it isn't supported on this phone, which is why I was hoping someone here could change that, just as they have re-enabled the fingerprint sensor in another thread.
So, I was playing with Nova Launcher to have at least the double tap to sleep. It works. But the problem is that when I wake up the xperia, I have to swipe the gesture password, touch id is not enough. Of course, no way I do that every time I unlock the screen! Has anybody found any other solution for that?

OK thank God, that actually solved the problem. Well at least I have double tap to sleep. I only hope the lack of double tap to wake is just a software limit and the device is hardware capable of doing it and we will be able to enable it in the future, maybe with root...
How lucky it worked. if we hope that waking up with two tap is enabled soon, it is very necessary
For those that need a temporary alternative, look up Gravity Screen https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en and turn off all the features (uncheck boxes or slider to 0) except for "Turn Screen ON by Proximity". This will wake up the phone to lockscreen every time the proximity sensor goes from something nearby to nothing. so you can tap the proximity sensor to wake the phone, or it will wake up by itself when you take out of pocket.

Fingerprint scanner too fast!!

I'm finding it quite difficult to turn on the screen of my XZ1C without unlocking the phone...
Sometimes I just want to look at the lock screen without the phone unlocking, but the fingerprint scanner reacts so quickly that the lock screen (along with any notifications) is gone before I've even read the time!!
Is there a way to set a delay (probably not) or set another button (vol? camera?) to wake up the screen without unlocking the phone? I'd rather not have to disable the fingerprint scanner, and I never had this issue with my Z5C.
Seriously?
People complaining about the fp-scanner being too fast nowadays?
As for solutions, you could always use a finger where you haven't stored the print.
Or use your fingernail to press the button.

That's what I'm doing - it's a bit awkward! On the Z5C there was just enough time to remove your finger before the phone unlocked so you could have a quick glance at the screen. It must use more battery to fully wake up the phone everytime the power button is pressed?
I guess "tap to wake" would have been another solution to my (admittedly small) problem.
Oh, come on now. Fast fingerprint scanner is a good thing. There shouldn't be such thing as too fast. I would simply "reserve" my middle fingers for checking the lock screen.
Even if I use the "wrong" finger, the lockscreen bounces to the left because it's tried reading the fingerprint which is also annoying when all I want to do is check the time and for any notifications!
a novel approach i just set up: when scanning your thumb, only scan the pad and not the tip. then you can use the pad to unlock and the tip to check the lock screen.
(doesn't fix the problem of the bounce tho)
Use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jarsilio.android.waveup
Just wave your hand over the proximity sensor and the screen will turn on but won't unlock the phone if you have a lock.
Don't enable the lock screen functionality though, it doesn't support fingerprint unlock.
Lol why don't u just use a another finger?

look on the Play Store for Power Button to Volume Button by TeliApp, the app is old but still works and will allow you to use the volume down button as a second screen on button. it reverts back to being a normal volume down button once the screen is on. no root required. (I would post a link but XDA won't let me because I'm a new user)

Any way to switch from tap to wake to double tap to wake ?

Hi there,
Tap to wake is a neat feature but I find myself waking up my phone too often by mistake, so I tried to figure out a way to get the old double tap to wake back, but couldn't find out how.
I guess it must be implemented into custom kernel ?
Any advice would be appreciated !
Same, I had to turn this off b/c my phone kept waking in my pocket and changing songs.
I noticed too sometimes my phone wakes up in y pocket, coming from OnePlus it surprised me cause I'm used to have pocket mode. Hope there will be a workaround later.
I replaced the Pixel Launcher with Nova Launcher. Light years better. While there is no double tap to wake, you can double tap to lock the screen then just use the fingerprint reader to unlock the screen. Since owning the OG Droid long ago it seems, I have yet to find a home launcher better than Nova. Worth every penny.
Double Tap - Apps on Google Play
Easy to turn on/off screen without power. Not affected to unlock by fingerprint
play.google.com
Works perfectly on Pie.
As for Q...? Give Google time and they will screw up anything and everything.
I use NovaLauncher too and all my devices for years now. I love it.
But that's not what me and OP are complaining about. We want to double-tap the screen while the phone is laying a table and have it wake up to lock screen. Picking it up and using the fingerprint sensor on back doesn't help.
Lift to Wake works, but you have too, duh, lift it to wake it. We want the double tap for our fingers, but not erroneous dbl tap detections when phone is moving around in pocket or in my hand.
I can't tell you how many times music player skipped forward or back b/c or incorrect dbl taps, waking, and then more taps from my pocket contents or whatever.
I'm using OnePlus launcher port as I'm used to it (and I love the gesture to access hidden apps from app drawer, asking for fingerprint).
And I'm happy with it, I use Gravity box so I can turn the screen with double tap on status bar.
For now I disabled tap to wake, and I use tasker to turn on always on when there's an incoming notification, so that I don't have to wake my screen just to check if there's something new.
I'm confident someone will give us a custom kernel allowing double tap to wake someday !
Seems like there's something wrong with proximity sensor, I noticed that after trying to play with proximity sensor in tasker, it always return 5cm.
Updating to February build did not solve the issue, that could be the reason why there's no pocket mode.
Anybody else with this problem ? (There are several apps that can read sensors and check for proximity one.)
Did anyone ever figure this out. I really like the double tap to wake so I just tap my phone while it sits on table to wake. I never had an issues w/tapping to wake before (LG v35, etc) and I now realize why it is a huge problem for myt 4A 5G -- stupid Google make it tap to wake, not double tap. For me, this cause constant waking and then irritating unwanted activity (music changing, podcasts stopping) while my phone is still in my pocket. Arrrrg.

If your phone wakes up in your pocket, you must have a problem with proximity sensor, i had to remove my screen protector because of that, and now, no more accidental wake up while in the pocket (but i still miss the double tap to wake).

Question Screen unresponsive to taps?

Hi guys!
A few months ago I tried Pixel 6 as a replacement for my ageing OnePlus 5 and in the end had to return it because it was sometimes missing screen taps. Now I have Pixel 7 and guess what? The same thing. It is the most prominent when I want to wake the phone up with a tap (Google changed from double-tap, gods know why) and it often fails. I've tried double-tap, tripple-tap, turning off/on various settings, restarting, updating... The same stuff. There seems to be a lot of talk about it on reddit. The same works flawlessly on my Pixel 5 (and also many other things which are failing on Pixel 7).
Going through discussions it seems this plagues Pixel phones for some time and it seems to be some hardware issue.
Have you encountered the same issue?

My works flawlessly single tap, double tap, doesn't matter but I use nova launcher and Iam rooted
I noticed something similar because my 3 XL worked with the slightest tap. My 7 misses taps if I'm not directly tapping with a full press of my finger. If it's just a brief tip tap it sometimes doesn't work. The strange thing is if I'm tapping something on the screen it shows the touch animation, but it doesn't register the tap, so I have to tap again harder, and then it works. Seeing a setting to increase sensitivity makes me thing Google has the default too low, and hopefully can "fix" it in an update.

Nova Launcher, my favourite app!
Seems like some shortcomings of Pixel 7 can be solved using the root access, however it seems crazy I need to root the phone to get the same functions as on a Samsung or a OnePlus phone :-/

Yes, it is as you describe. But don't hope too much, this behavior about missing already animated taps had been reported for Pixel 6 by many people, but Google seems to ignore it or what, they just don't give a care?
I encountered this issue in the beginning. Try the following and see if it solves your phone being unresponsive to tapping to unlock the device. Go to: Settings>Display>Lock screen and turn off Lift to check phone, turn on Tap to check phone.

Hey, same here sometimes. I got a pretty good but cheap tempered glass screen protector with which FP works 8/10 plus using face unlock. Better touch input option with protector is enabled in settings.

Exactly this happens more often and I had that on my Pixel 6 too which I replaced with a Realme GT2 Pro (no problems with the Realme) but on Pixel 7 now again. Still using three buttons navigation bar, and often the taps don't work there too.
LOL f* Google, can't they get their stuff fixed? I mean the company which codes the OS sucks regarding their flagships more than other OEMs which only adapt the OS. Jesus f* christ.
