Does anyone know if the only way to achieve sim unlock is through sprint? I had a verizon note 2 and out of the box it would only read verizon sims but after I rooted and rommed it, it read my at&t sim as well. Just curious if there is something similar I can do with this phone.
I wonder if the "No Contact" or "Off Contract" $399 Moto X is GSM unlocked for international use or US only?
Can someone please confirm?
Thanks
Unlocked is unlocked.
Its unlocked for anything.....or its not unlocked ....there's no in between.

Depends which lock you are talking about: bootloader, radio, or SIM.
Dev Edition, Rogers/AT&T model XT1058 have unlockable bootloaders.
Rogers/AT&T radio is not locked. I believe the Verizon version is so won't work on other US carriers. But they will all work on non-US carriers.
And they are all SIM locked, but easy to unlock.

Are you sure about those models? I think the TMO can be unlocked, not the AT&T. This is what the official Moto X website says.

That is not accurate.
You mention ATT has an unlockable bootloader. Unfortunately the Retail and MotoMaker version for ATT and Verizon have locked bootloaders which can not be unlocked, along with a few other carriers. The codes are not available from Moto's web site, and there is no other path to unlock those bootloaders. The VZW Dev Edition X can have its bootloader unlocked.
As for the Verizon version sim locked and working on other carriers.. The Verizon version (retail, motomaker and dev) is NOT "radio locked" nor is it sim locked, so it will work with a Non-Verizon GSM SIM. Depending on the frequencies of your carrier, the Verizon version will work for GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and possibly work for HSPA/HSPA+, and in some rare cases even LTE can work. It just depends on the bands/frequencies your carrier uses, compared to those supported by the X. I've posted about my VZW X working using my T-Mobile US sim, as have a few others. And I've seen posts of VZW X with ATT sim working.
The ATT version is SIM locked, and you need the unlock codes to use a Non-ATT SIM.
As for all being easy to SIM Unlock, it should be noted that when it comes to the Sprint Moto X, it is sim locked, and Sprint will give SIM Unlock code only if you are a current Sprint Customer with the X on your line/account. No 3rd party places that sell unlock codes have them for sprint moto X. So if the phone is not active on Sprint Service, you wont be able to get a SIM Unlock code for it. But I believe you are correct that any other X which is SIM locked should be "easy" to purchase or otherwise obtain the SIM Unlock codes.
T-Mobile X has an unlockable bootloader. But unlike the Dev Edition, unlocking the bootloader on the MotoMaker for T-Mobile version voids the warranty. The T-Mobile X is also SIM Unlocked out of the box.
I can't comment on Rogers or others.

Where are you looking? If you buy a "USA carrier branded" X off Moto Maker, or directly from a carrier it will very likely be SIM locked even if its "no contract." The exception being T-Mobile and Verizon which I know are not sim locked, and will work for USA and Non-USA GSM service (depending on the frequencies of the carrier you will be using... it could be as slow as EDGE, or as fast as HSPA+ or LTE).
So I purchased a Moto X off Swappa from a guy that works for Anandtech.com. They were selling their demo model so I snagged it. Apparently it was used in Canada despite the fact that it is an AT&T model. When I received the phone and popped a SIM into it, it is prompting me for a SIM unlock PIN. He claims that nothing was changed software wise, but it seems to me that they would have had to change something in order to get it to work with a Canadian GSM SIM card. I took it to an AT&T store and he called tech support but the pins they gave him wouldn't work. Anyone have any thoughts on how to make this thing work or am i out of luck? I was thinking of unlocking and rooting with a stock ROM, but not sure if that would resolve the issue. I would appreciate any input.
thanks!

Rogers Wireless in Canada uses the XT1058, Att uses an XT1058, but they are not the same rom/radio code. And the Rogers can get the boot loader unlock code from Moto directly.
Could it be you have a Rogers XT1058? Does it have the ATT logo on its back? Did ATT have the IMEI in its database?
Something else to consider... you mention wanting to unlock and root... Unless that Chinese Website/Middleman comes backup, you can't unlock the bootloader on the ATT XT1058, and the current root option for 4.4.2 doesn't survive power off/on since there is no way to disable write protection (without unlocking the bootloader).

It is from Canada, but it has the AT&T logo. So at this point, there is no way to flash an AT&T stock ROM onto the phone? In contacting AT&T again today, the only thing that I could discern was the system version that was different than what she said it should be. I have 165.44.1.ghost_att.ATT.en.US, she said that it should be 161.44.1.ghost_att.ATT.en.US
Just curious, can you boot into fastboot/bootloader mode. Does it say "Device is Locked Status Code 0" or "Device is Unlocked Status Code 3"?
The latest ATT ROM leaked on http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 is 165.44.1.ghost, and as far as I know, that is the current ATT ROM. You can try and reflash the ATT SBF, but I doubt it will help.
ATT XT1058 is Sim locked out of the box, but an ATT SIM should work in it sim locked or unlocked.
I don't have an answer as to why if you have an XT1058 from ATT, and put a real ATT SIM in it, you would get prompted for the SIM Unlock pin, unless you have a PUK on the SIM itself? Does this SIM work in other ATT devices without prompting for unlock pin?

Device is locked - status code 0. I am able to use the SIM in my G2 with no issues. The person I bought it from said that it was never used on a Canadian provider.

Sorry, I'm not sure what to tell you.
The bootloader has never been unlocked, so there is no way non-ATT ROM or radio could have been installed.
Do you have another ATT Sim to try, or a T-Mobile SIM maybe?
I remember someone else posting something like this a while ago, but I do not know if there was a resolution or not.
I don't know what to tell you to try next. Sorry.
Is there a way to unlock a phone?
I got a phone which is sim locked (got it on sale for low price), but it is sim locked.
I don't know the carrier...
Thanks

Lock code or blacklist? If blacklist you got a nice media player. What's on screen when you boot up?
Anyone can help with work method for unlock operator Verizon sim block for pixel 5?
Hi mr.4e, and welcome to XDA. Verizon variants of all phones can not be bootloader unlocked. As far as carrier unlock, sometimes erroneously called SIM unlock, there is no legal way to bypass the carrier's own restrictions. I don't keep track of when Verizon has instituted different policies - it used to be that Verizon phones were carrier unlocked immediately. These days I believe they are carrier unlocked after 90 days.
Thx,that means it's a hardware problem
