Wondering if you can help me. I have a 2017 Honda Civic Si. My objective was to install Viper4Android. Currently, my head unit is stuck on an "Software Update: There was a problem reading the USB Device. Please switch off the vehicle then restart to retry." screen at boot up. Cannot get out of it. I even removed the fuse over night. I tried the different combinations of "Hard Reseting", but nothing works. Audio Power+Menu+Dimmer & Power+Volume. When I press the button for the right mirror camera, the Head Unit remains black. When I press random buttons on the head unit, the screen flashes either red, green or blue. No colors flash when the volume buttons are pressed.
What I did...
1. Installed Honda Hack using car's Web Browser.
2. Installed Super SU
3. Installed Busy Box
4. Installed Viper.
I immediately opened Viper after installing all the apps without rebooting. I tried the EQ, but nothing worked. So I proceeded with Super SU. There, I was prompted with a "Need to update". Then "SuperSU: If you have a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM, that can be used to (try to) install the SU binary. This is recommended for HTC devices. How would you like to install the SU binary?" That's where I mistakenly tapped on "TWRP/CWM". So now when I start the car... I get "Software Update... Current... New... Copying... Please do not turn off the vehicle or disconnect the USB device." The progress goes up to 25% and then prompts me with* "Software Update: There was a problem reading the USB Device. Please switch off the vehicle then restart to retry.".
Thank you.

So, I was running CM7 no problems. Then one day the ax just fell. I tried re-flashing the ROM and it hangs on the boot animation...so, I removed CWM, made a bootable CWM SD and flashed a few different "return to Stock.zips." One finally worked, but when I connect to Wifi, it says it can't connect and shows that my device doesn't have a serial number or a model number, so I can't get beyond that screen, and it is on version 1.0.1. So I tried using the CWM SD again to update the Firmware. When I did that as soon as I turned on the device, it locked up on a screen that says, "Install Failed, please power Off and the Back on again." So I tried completely wiping and re-installing CM7 to eMMc, and now, again it just hangs on the boot screen.
Oh, and 8 boot interruptions doesn't work for me and when I try holding the power +N keys I go directly into the "Install failed please press off and power back on to try again," screen.
My head is going to explode. Please help. I think my next attempt is going to be trying to flash an alternate kernel.

Hey I tried this, and when I flash the .zip, as soon as the device powers on it goes straight into the "install failed please turn off device and the turn back on to try again," dialog. On this screen it is black with a white stenciling of the NC. I have grown to despise this screen.
Also, anytime I have tried to factory reset, it goes directly into the install failed screen.
I have managed to get into the stock 1.0.1 homescreen by bypassing the Out of Box Experience, and even when I try to Erase/Deregister there, it stops and says device not registered, and therefore it cannot wipe. Also, when I check device info, every single one has red 000000000.
I suppose that since I'm at least to the homescreens I could try ADB, because it wasn't working either the last two nights.
Also is there anything in the LOST.DIR that could help? What the hell is a LOST.DIR?
So, another interesting thing here...whenever I go to install ADB the softkeys show up in the status bar, like its already rooted and running the stock 1.0.1 launcher bar, as soon as I unplug the USB, they disappear, so I can't even enable debugging.
Also, the NC isn't showing up on the ADB device list.
Well... I have a Droid 2.2.3. Whenever I connect it to my windows 7, it shows up as "device has malfunctioned, device.. unknown" everytime. I have tried reinstalling drivers, etc but the Computer never recognizes it as a Motorola device.
Also, my phone doesn't charge when the phone is on and connected to the pc, but when the phone is connected to the PC and I turn the phone off, it charges (but then it wont turn on unless I disconnect it).
Also, whenever it is connected, it never shows the USB icon/ or anything in the notification bar. So, I havent been able to root it yet. I have tried on 3 other computers (XP, 7, 7) and 3 other USB cables. Same results.
I want to root my Droid 2.2.3, I have tried z4root app, but it doesn't support 2.2+
How can I root my Droid without a PC, can I use terminal, etc and do it on the phone itself?
Sounds like one of the USB data pins is broken in your phone's connector or something similar.
Have you tried rooting with Universal Androot?
Ah. I was really hoping that wasnt it. I have tried z4root, and universal androot.... to no avail.
:/ Using this phone is no fun without root
Try using an SD card reader and putting OpenRecovery on your SD card. If you're lucky enough to have a vulnerable recovery preloaded on your Milestone, you'll be able to run OR ("install update.zip") from your stock recovery. From there, you can root the device very easily. [OpenRecovery Download]
How you can boot into recovery depends on your bootloader version. For the bootloader version 90.78, the hotkey is x (the letter x on your hardware keyboard); for all other bootloader versions, the hotkey is the camera button. You need to press and hold the hotkey while you turn the phone on. Once you see the triangle with the exclamation mark in it, you can release the hotkey. Now press and hold the volume-up button and press the camera button to enter the actual recovery menu. If you see yellow text, you’ve done it right. What you see now is the stock recovery menu, to enter OR you have to select “apply sdcard:update.zip” (navigation is done with the DPad on the hardware keyboard, DPad-Center acts as enter). After a few seconds you should see a different menu, and the top line should say “Motorola MILESTONE Open Recovery”.

Just tried that. Didnt work, "EOCD marker" error so I guess I dont have a vulnerable recovery.
Is there any way I can downgrade from 2.2.3 to something else using the stock recovery>
Have you tried downloading a custom ROM like CM7 and renaming it to update.zip and dropping it in the root of your SD card? It's pre-rooted, so if it'll install that way, you might end up with exactly what you need. You can then install the Google Apps package (newest here) the same way (just rename to update.zip in root of SD card) so you might be able to get the device updated without a custom recovery.

Just rethought that plan -- You'll probably get another EOCD error. But it's still worth a try if you have 10 minutes to spare.
Yeah I tried it anyways. Signature check obviously fails. Thanks anyways
Did you get anything to work??? everytime i try to load the update.zip file it gives me an installation aborted error????
Hello.
I was playing around a bit, and made a bad decision on disabling a sys app, with a root uninstaller app.
Now my phone starts up, but stays on the 'samsung' splash-screen.
My home doesn't seem to get loaded, so its stuck there.
I do, however, get notification sounds from text-messages and push-services.
My phone is rooted, but had no recovery installed, neither did I run busybox.
Not sure wether it runs 4.1.1 or 4.1.2, but I guess 4.1.1 because there's no intern recovery I can activate...
I tried flashing the recovery package with odin, still can't seem to get inside recovery... (Yes I can get into Download Mode)
I tried to reboot into the recovery via adb, but my phone - logically - doesn't respond to those.
Apparently, my USB Debug is not activated also... The phone connects, but I can't even do something with tools like GS3 Mini Toolkit.
Kies doesn't seem to connect either (even when the phone is on)... probably services that don't get started due to a battery saver app...
Long Story Short
Is there a rom & kernel, that can fully wipe my phone, via Odin, cause Download Mode seems to be my only option in recovering my phone.
Or any solutions that you could come up with.. because I already tested so much things,
and it's still stuck on the samsung 'lighting up' logo and a black screen.
The phone is for work & personal use... and I don't have the option to replace it atm.
I really need to get it working again... it was the only smartphone I ever had a decent battery life with (avg. 2.5days)
Thanks in advance!
- Fixed, I got into recovery mode, I forgot to stop pushing the powerbutton... so it rebooted. YAY :highfive:
Hello everyone,
first of all thanks for your amazing work and all the stuff you provide. I was a silent reader for a long time, but now my phone is trolling that much, I cannot fix it on my own/with the guides I found here.
I do have an HTC One M7, rooted (superuser) and S-OFF (revone) with Androidd Revolution HD 71.1. I used to update my ROM every month, but I got stuck after the last update. My recovery was TWRP as CWM did not work properly when I rooted my phone.
My issues as a list:
- cannot enter recovery anymore
- cannot connect via USB (tried every port)
- screen turning randomly black on homescreen and sometimes in apps (but they usually work), screen does work, but i cannot see a thing
- since today graphical issues after a reboot (flickering screen, parts of the screen get duplicated)
Since the last update I cannot enter recovery anymore. Getting in bootloader is no problem but i get stuck in the "entering recovery...." screen. It does not move, tested it for some hours. I tried updating the recovery (-), trying to flash stock recovery and reflashing custom (-), trying cwm (-).
After I tried cwm i noticed that it didnt overwrite the recovery but i got both. cwm and twrp, but i cannot delete one of them (didn' work before either). I can start TWRP oder CWM on a booted phone, but updating both bugs and I can't enter recovery with these tools too.
Today I wanted to try again on my own, but my phone won't connect on USB. Tried every port on my computer with and without USB-Debugging. I will try on a other computer, but I could not do this until now. Additionaly I want to wait for some ideas of fixing, as I think "my" trys are not going to work suddenly .
Screen started to turn black a few days ago. Dont know why but I think it could be a software issue. but i cannot update (see above ). When i try to turn my screen on it often just turns instantly black. soft keys are enlightend and it does work (more or less). if i success in sliding down the service bar on the top, i can start my alarm clock app and from there use the soft keys to get in other started apps. From there it works most of the time. Sometimes i need a couple of trys, sometimes it just works as its intended without turning black and sometimes i need several minutes to succeed.
Cannot say more as I did to the graphical issues. Just had them once until I started an app (screen worked). could not reproduce this error.
I would prefer a solution without wiping, but if necessary i will ofc.
Thanks in advance for your help, as I am rather helpless right now.
I attached a photo of the bootloader.
Yours Laexxi
