Difference between optimization on K20 Pro/Mi9TPro vs competitors with SD855 - Redmi K20 Pro / Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro Questions & Answe

I've always wondered that apart from the obvious hardware differences which contribute to the speed difference in phones like OP7P or ROG2 etc (Storage Ufs 3 vs 2.1 in K20P),
-- what's the secret to their software optimisation too?
I've seen benchmarks on custom roms vs stock miui & the difference is visible but not much & even custom kernels have a boosted score but they are still coming only close to or slightly exceeding stock OP7P scores.
In games like pubg there is significantly lesser jank & microstutters on OP7. How come?
Are the driver's much updated or tuned or the cpu scheduler tunings very different in their base software stack?
Pubg in k20pro has a much higher frametime average & level of frame drops vs OP7, especially visible with multiple squads nearby (in-game I don't think UFS3 has a significant potential of impact once assets are loaded in the game but maybe I'm wrong?)
(In general games have better stats when tested using profiling apps on OnePlus vs K20/Mi9T)
What prevents our phone from getting to that level of fluidity?
Atm I'm using immensity kernel on miui 11 & I see it's based on caf sources & there's noticeable performance boost in scores as well as real life usage but importantly the idle drain or drain while using light apps is damn low too!
For example I've not seen <150ma live drain in simple apps or in idle on stock kernel or like on Quax which is based on stock but in Immensity I'm often seeing as low as -95ma-115ma drain which is very, very good & sign of tuned cpu schedulers & other things despite using the same rom.
^^---So is this the sign that the 855 chipset is not fully utilised/optimised by Xiaomi yet?
Even black shark 2 has lesser jitter & smoother operation in daily usage (yes it has the 855+ but it's ~15-20% faster ., seems to have much better base software!)
Can we hope things will improve officially? Or Xiaomi won't prioritize base phones that much vs their 'gaming' phones?
Personally I'm hyped about PapaSmurf kernel coming for our device too! (og made for Razor phone) :fingers-crossed:

Is the captivate as awesome as it appears in quadrant after the lag fix?

I have the captivate with bloatware removed, unhelpful's overclock kernel, and the lag fix, I get quadrant scores as high as 2505. I was wondering if the phone its just that awesome or if there were similar mods to snapdragon phones that give them similar performance. i know they can be overclocked.
I guess what I'm getting at is that my phone would hang on the file system tests in quadrant until the lag fix where the score nearly tripled! Is this something unique to the galaxy s do to a flaw or are there similar problems on other phones that could be fixed and yield similar performance to my phone? Or is the galaxy s cpu, gpu and ram and other components just that much better?

My $0.02 says the galaxy s as a processing unit is slightly better than the older snapdragon. Better optimised, newer (45nm > 60nm) etc. There could very well be processing issues on other chips too. We wont know until someone finds them. Bear in mind however, the Snapdragon chips are likely to be much better optimised for android operating systems - as android is developed on that reference hardware - e.g. nexus one uses a quallcomm snapdragon and gets a massive jump with JIT, froyo. However, droid X, Droid 2 with froyo dont see nearly as high increases in performance.
The GPU is known to be significantly better on the Galaxy S phones. However, its only a matter of time before the next gen snapdragons take the lead again (or at least play catch up)....and somehow I wont be surprised if the subsequent Galaxy S 2 devices retake the lead
Pretty much what I was thinking, from what I understand the snapdragon has up to 20% greater throughput than a standard arm v7 processor but the hummingbird needs 15-25% fewer instructions to do the same task. I wish I could remember the reference for that. In other words, snapdragon works harder and hummingbird works smarter.
I knew as far a shear performance it would come down to the gpu but didn't know any details on that.

The issue that slows the Galaxy models is Samsung's proprietary file system. The lagfix improves performance by wedging in between the filesystem and providing a buffer built with a modern filesystem.
The massive score increase in Quadrant is due to the file IO being MUCH MUCH faster when the lag fix is applied. If you were to look at the professional version of Quadrant (which breaks down the scores into their categories) the File I/O portion would be in the mid to high 6000's, which really unbalances the score..

CPU undervolting concept and results

This is an outdated device, but since SD801 is so efficient, I gave it a try.
Warning - undervolting is a risky process. It may constantly crash your device, make it unusable or you can actually lose all of your data. Be aware.
So, after reading various articles about CPU binning concept, I thoroughly examined my device's potential. Note, that every device is different, regarding CPU quality and etc.
Anyways, I am running stock rom with Boeffla kernel. I actually gave up, when my device was getting hot - I don't like that at all. Since thermal throttling is really aggresive, I wanted to get away from that completely. And I did.
Currently my phone is heavily undervolted (by 0.1V to be exact) and to be honest, CPU temperatures now never ever exceed 50ºC. With stock voltages, I could easily reach 80ºC.
Anybody else tried doing undervolting? Share your experiences. I would greatly appreciate that.

The only real benefit of undervolting is to reduce temps. Even so it isn't recommended because of the risk of instabilities.

Not necessarily. In my experience in kernels, undervolting only brings marginal power savings. Most battery drain is from open apps and from the display.

Wake locks play a big role too I always turn off as may features as I can on my s5 verizon and settings database editor App to turn off more features than normally possible

Not exactly marginal from my experience. It also depends on which frequency CPU is running. At higher clocks, lower power consumption is more noticeable than on lower frequencies.

Well, that's not quite the same as what I was saying.
Different CPU frequencies use different current levels which will affect the power draw. So in this case, it will affect the battery savings. Whereas undervolting alone doesn't bring much of a difference due to the already efficient design of our SOC (well, at least in my case ).

Throttling is really noticeable with stock voltages. Play some games for a while and you'll start to feel that phone is getting slower and hotter. Not the case anymore after undervolting. If your phone can handle upto 0.1V undervolt, then your SOC is in good shape.

i can confirm this, i feel my phone is really snappy now and slightly worm, not hot anymore
I use 300-2000Mhz and heavy UV 620-850V. I also use "use_spi_crc=0".
After phone reboot on stock i get 80'C (cpu tem module in xposed) and on my settings it is not reaching 60'C
What about battery life? it needs long testing, i can assume that its slightly better because less energy is converted in to heat
There seems to be some misconception on undervolting.
In theory undervolting should translate to better battery life. However....
Real world results tell a different story as it shouldn't really make much difference at all. For example, not all S5 phones run the same voltage tables (different CPU quality require more/less voltage), yet they achieve the same battery life. So what voltage was set by the manufacturer (Samsung) is already the optimum voltage.
You will definitely achieve better thermals after undervolting, but in the custom kernel world, most kernel developers will not be able to provide help in the case of instabilities. Some kernel developers may not even provide undervolting support because there just isn't a great enough benefit other than improving thermals.

I`ve got the exynos variant of the S5. I undervolted to -85 all of that stuff and the phone now doesn't heat at all and battery life isn't that amazing but it is noticeably better

Undervolting other components alongside the CPU will make a more noticeable difference in terms of battery savings. It still isn't recommended by many kernel devs as these other components are more sensitive to slight voltage changes (including the bus).

Yeah it actually makes a slight difference in battery life, But I don't think anyone should go below these values since I started to get Screen of death and all that kinda stuff that happens when phones are very undervolted haha
If there's a kernel that allows users of Snapdragon phones to undervolt that hardware, I really recommend you to do it, it really helps battery's performance if you need that extra hour of Screen On time
Now, all of this changes are not recommended cause there could be problems with your phones if you're not sure bout the parameters you're playing with.
does anybody else have problem with gpu oc ? no matter what settings i use there is no performance increase at all, its like the 600Mhz is permanent even when all monitoring programs show 700-800Mhz :/ I have tested gpu many times using 3dmark - always the same fps (600-800Mhz). With 200Mhz increase in frequency it should be significant increase in fps!

Battery Life

How to increase the battery life and make it last longer? I shifted for Xperia Z2 to Note 5 and the difference in SOT is waaay too much. Are there any battery efficient roms or kernels or any tweaks to make it last longer?
The best I've seen was with MM, using SkyHigh kernel - disable the big cores, underclock the gpu, increase sensor intervals. But unfortunately that kernel is not at all stable. It likes to crash and freeze up a lot.
Our device isn't well supported compared to non-exynos devices.

Although you can't disable all the big cores(min 1 core stays online afaik), messing with kernel stuffs -which you may not doing it correctly- makes it unstable. Otherwise it was stable as rock. On behalf of an official tester, even experimental versions were doing great. You just have be aware of what you're messing with, it was for advanced users. Otherwise you can just flash it and use, there is even no need to install synapse. Sigh.. Good old times.

benchmark MIUI vs custom roms

Was surprised of the antutu score of MIUI. And more surprised that custom roms ans kernels scores less...
MIUI : 299000
Custom ROM and differents kernels : 230000 - 275000
Mostly CPU scrores are under
Now using Havoc and sphinx kernel results: 265000 (not bad by the way...)
Any explanation?
The explanation for this is that MIUI is highly rescrictive and heavily blocks background apps in order to provide better battery life and performance, thus the benchmark scores will increase dramatically. Others are Android, like Samsung or Pixel devices without these restrictions. If you notice, whenever you send a message to a MIUI user on WhatsApp, the receiver will not be able to get the message just in time like any other Android variations' users.
I thought it was the opposite...
At the end I prefer custom ROM experience...
I can't accept to have advertising into the ROM itself...

i bought this phone last week, i am not satisfied with this phone, it gets hot when browsing, lag when playing games(because of the unstable high speed clock), i checked using the aida64 app and the big cores clock speed easily reach 2.2 ghz speed. that was unnecessary, even after turning the battery saver mode, the cores still easily touch 2.2 ghz. i already discussed this on the indonesian mi community, but then i got bullied, people saying it was my fault, not the phone. but there was many thread that complains about lag when playing games and bad battery life. i supose that was because the bad management of cpu cores.
note : i bought this phone in indonesia, with TAM (official) warranty
my rom is currently on the 10.3.6.0(PFGMIXM)
3+32GB model.

It's very commom for any Snapdragon device to reach top clock speed when in use, download CPU-z and do a little scrolling to see that.
The lag in games you're getting is most probably because of the 3GB RAM of your variant not the CPU as SD660 can handle most mobile games with ease.
About battery life, how much SOT are you getting? RN7 should handle at least 6hrs with some heavy gaming included.
And about temperature, how much degrees is your device peaking at? Anything below 38ºC should be fine.
And lastly, about mi community......well, most people there look like VERY inexperienced users, i wouldn't take them as a parameter to prove your point.

3gb of ram is good enough for gaming unless ur playing a heavy game while on youtube and facebook at the same time. the problem with this phone is the aggressive thermal throttling, once the phone reaches 40°c the phone becomes noticeably slower.
my advice to OP is unlock ur bootloader flash some custom rom, custom kernel and root ur device until you find the performance/battery ur looking for.

Few examples: TES Blades, Fortnite, PS2 emulation.

thats my point, 3gb is enough for games as long as you dont multi task. and this phone is mid range.
im in Philippines, room temperature here is about 37° heavy games like pubg makes my phone temperature skyrocket reaching up to 45° especially with thermal mod.
btw MIUI has the worst ram management for this phone. its closing background apps like no tomorrow, but on any custom rom its actually quite decent.

Just Dont bother the hardcore mi fans, especially indonesian mi fans, i know they are jackass sometimes (well Not all of them)
Yes the firmware is really not optimize, battery usage is really inconsistent (typical not optimize firmware)
All we can do is wait for the new OTA.
Strangely the PRO variant get more updated frequently (check official mi website)
But for us indonesian, we are stuck with NON PRO version if we want to use Official waranty hardware.

Thanks for all your reply, i apreciated it. probably i will wait until miui 11 released, and if the phone still gets hot i will install custom rom and use EX kernel manager to disable input boost and limit the cpu.
for bullying in the mi community, i guess its just troll account ? or the xiaomi guy ? every thread about battery gets bullied by those person only.

not true .. i've been using PE (and revolutionX) and Havoc since mai.
After being on EvolutionX for more than a month, i switched to MIUI EU (coz i missed it) but then went back to trying havoc .. 2 weeks now ZERO problems no heat/lag whatsoever

these are very stable, miui-based custom ROMs with zero bloatware and better RAM management.
still a better ROM for people who want better performance / battery life on their xiaomi devices, but too afraid to live on the edge with AOSP ROMs.
AFAIK, that's called thermal-throttle/ing. When RN7 reach its peak performance and certain heat, to prevent overheat normally our device will slowing down its performance and it caused lags and fps drop for sure
I also encounter this problem when playing pubg even with smooth-ultra setting

and thermal throttling can be disabled by using a certain magisk module. although not recommended when ur playing for long period of time. i play max 3hrs highest temperature reached 45°c.

It happened to me, custom roms aren't good for gaming then switched back to MIUI, when I play phone gets 45 C max, my battery gives 6 hours of straight online gaming, I'm on MIUI Global 10.3.5, Evira kernel 3.8.

660 wasn't designed for battery efficiency. Still waiting for Franco Kernel, it might fix the issue. My Redmi Note 4x can last up to 10hrs SOT while my Redmi Note 7 can only reach 5hrs even with custom ROM+greenify installed.

Nope. With moderate use I barely get 7, mostly 6. I got this sot by using apps like line, wa, instagram, youtube, browsing, downloading tons of file and one match playing pubg and pes.
I reach 8 to 9 hours sot only if i using wifi and playing videos constantly, minimum social media and no gaming.
Ofc people used their phone different each others. But, im sure they are having same battery drain. People talk about this so many times and everywhere. Ur case having 10+ sot like only happen 1:10 of all lavender users.

Its true continuous gaming on this phone (with stock miui) is bad. You will get smooth gameplay only in short term, like a one match pubg. Then it will start to lag because of heat. We need to keep the phone temp as cool as possible when used for gaming to get less frame drop. Example, playing close to a fan or inside a room with air conditioner on.

Yes, thermal throttle where the main reason. Its limit cpu whenever temp -read by system- reach 43/44 degree. A temp read by system are mostly not indicate the real temp. Besides, we have clockspeed max at 2.2Ghz, making our phone faster to heats up easilly. Thats why thermal throttling the cpu in such early time. (Its ruins gameplay, isnt it? :v)
If we look inside thermal-engine.conf on lavender, it use two sensor for detection and two step for throttling the cpu. First step it will limit clockspeed by 1,5Ghz and 1,9Ghz. Second step it will limit clockspeed by 1,1Ghz and 1,4Ghz. Because the temp gap between these step are only 1°, so mostly thermal-engine will going to limit clockspeed by 1,1Ghz and 1,4Ghz. Imagine play pubg with that clockspeed, lags and frame drop will occurs oftenly.
I've seen Mi 8 Lite with the same chipset playing pubg continously without any frame drop. I took its thermal-engine configuration and compare them with lavender.
Interestingly there are specified profiles for gaming and pubg are missing on lavender. Thus, both thermal-engine are really different. A same chipset should having same thermal at least. But, this show us that lavender thermal thingy are not being optimized yet while mi8 lite does already.

Lol. Agreed XD
Im gonna Re-Unlock my bootloader for the third times and use custom rom when they fix Hals. Till then i stay on miui hoping miuidev did an improvisation with next update.
