Simple workaround to enable WhatsApp Dark theme on stable & beta A10 ( not tested on Pie)
Requirements:
1. Install the latest WhatsApp beta
2 . file manager with root permissions
Steps:
Go to /data/data/ com.whatsapp/shared_prefs/com.whatsapp_preferences.xml
Open it and add this line
<boolean name="dark_mode" value="true" />
Save it , go to WhatsApp and force closed the app
Open WhatsApp, go to settings>chats and option to change theme should be there

Cool, works great. It's not in chats for me though, it's just under Settings (see screenshot). It's a bit glitchy still: shows 'Light' when dark mode is enabled and I can't change it back to light. Could be Substratum interfering
Also, shame it's not truly black, which would be better for (minor) battery savings.
Oh and here's a pro tip, use code tags like so:

Same for me here, and I don't use Substratum. Other than Omega kernel it's all stock. I cant change it back to light but system default works, even though it still says light.

Figured it out, this is due to us being on the latest stable WhatsApp. If you install the latest Beta it'll work fine
It works, I set the dark theme but randomly it'll switch back to Light mode, be it minutes or hours. Is it normal?

For me working great , just enabled it once ..
It sticks , even after reboots..
Maube cause I've clean the app storage before applying the mode..

Just curious!! I have two whatsapp accounts, using by parellal accounts. I was able to get dark theme on whatsapp app but no changes in parellal app. Is it possible to get dark theme on both?

Don't use parallel apps so i can't test it..
Maybe you have to add this line on the parralel app too

I've gone through and inverted about 90 percent of the gmail app. The light stock app doesn't really flow with my theme. I've seen this asked for a few times around the forums so I thought I would share.
Copy to your internal SD card and flash with CWM Recovery.

I can't read any text in the body of an email. Presumably because it's black text on a black background. (Links show up as blue text)
I'm running Cognitionv2.3b8 with Darknesv2.5.1. I tried to get it back to the way it was by copying the Gmail.apk from the Cognition file into my system/app folder, but all that did was give me a force close every time I tried to open Gmail.
I'd rather have this work because it's awesome, but if I can't get the Black Gmail to work then how do I return it to it's previous state. (No, I didn't do a backup before installing. Yes, I know I should have)

Go into Titanium Backup and click on "Backup/Restore" at the top. Browse down to Gmail and click on it. Choose "Wipe data" then "Un-install !" and click "Yes". Reboot into ClockworkMOD Recovery and apply the zip. If you're still having issues repeat the steps to uninstall it, download Gmail from the market and I'll start looking into any issues. I re applied this mod about 100 times following these same steps and it works every time.
Just tested it out on my Captivate with Cognition 2.3b8 (no themes). Everything is readable. It even reset a problem I was having with Gmail notifications. I also like the new icon. This is nice!

I agree 100%...now if I can only get my BlackMarket to work again I've done everything. Clear data, clear cache, flash the theme over again, flash the icon tried the SGS tools market fix....I got nothing...same green icon & market now.
Looks way better than the stock gmail. Thanks for the flash fix. Maybe in your next version could the text be whiter? Not saying I don't love it, Just. Throwing it out there. I use the xda app and have it set to the black background and even in pretty bright sun the white lettering stands out real well is why I even mention it. Thanks again.

One small hitch: In some mails, am unable to see the text. Looks like the font colors needs to be updated somewhere in the apk file.
I did NOT create this theme and take no credit for it. I only ported it to work with EB01.

Wow thanks for the updated version already, already took care of some of the issues I was going to report! Threw you a few bucks. Have a few minor nit picks:
1.) Pop ups like the task manager and powering off message are opaque, I believe on previous iterations they were semi transparent
2.) I notice you got rid of the black text on the grey background in the notification pull down. However, one bit of black text remains - on the app name and download percentage that appears during the download phase of a market install of an app.
That's all I got for now, you nailed everything else in the new build!

I noticed that after reflashing your theme, the transitions are gone now, I'm assuming they need to be integrated to prevent this.

I might suggest starting to refer to your tweaks/additions as versions (ie this might be v1.4, original was 1.0, etc), and then updating the thread title so people know it's been updated - and appending the version number to the file name so we know which file on our phone is what revision. For some odd reason, I wanted to theme the Words with Friends app.
I didn't want to include this in the subject, but as an added bonus this is a version with the ads stripped away. I wouldn't post this if there was a paid version available on the market...but there's not.
I did the theming, not the smali magic of redirecting to avoid the ads. As soon as I remember/find who did the smali work, I'll give them credit.
There are still a few areas for improvement, e.g. the Settings screen, background of the game board, Chat area, News button (black text).
But most of the most commonly used screens look nice. I didn't want to mess with the tiles just yet, so most of those colors are the same.

Installation Instructions
1. Uninstall previous version (preferably with Titanium.. and make a backup).
Note: All of your games are stored on their servers-- not your device. When you log in, it retrieves all of your info automagically.

I'm gonna take a look at it later today. I don't like the facebook integration in it and have heard it slows down the app. Do you have that experience?
Either way, I probably will. 90% of the mods were png edits, so most of the work is already done

This looks really good, I made a couple (one black for me and one pink for my wife) with a "few" extra words in the lexicon, but I couldn't get the drawables.xml file to take. Every time I modded it, it would FC when opened. Any chance of letting me know how you got that one to work?

Hm - I haven't had any problems with the drawable.xml specifically -- are you sure it's not the extra words that caused the FC problems? I would imagine it would compare those lexicon xmls with some kind of database to verify.. (but maybe not?)
Which version were u working on? I know from 3.52 to 4.00 (and 4.01) they've added a line at the bottom of the drawables.xml (I think dark_grey). I'd love to see screen caps

They don't verify the words online only locally, I've played "f*ck" just to test it out. It scrores and shows properly on facebook and android . The light blue bellow the game board I was sure was in the drawables.xml as was the light blue above the board as well......I thought, but I saw you had that one recolored. Any time I decompile it FC's on open, I had to extract it then put the .png's back in the APK. so anything in resources.arsc and classes.dex is off limits for me.
Haha that's so awesome. I don't know if you've tried this, but this is how I do it.
Decompile original, make xml and or smali edits, compile, N to system apk, N to replace pngs, then open the unsigned apk in Place here for modding, replace the original pngs with the modded ones (using 7zip), save, close, then sign the zip, then install.
If that's not what you're doing, might be worth a try.

Yeah, that's what I did. Lol I think I'm just gonna steal yours, 'cause at least you got the space above the board.... better than mine . All the dictionary entries are in \res\raw named "words_(letter).txt" I edited them with notepad++ and you can add any words at all. Reinsert like the .png's.

Tutorial/Download:
1. Go to the Theme Store, then under the section "Different landscapes of city" scroll all the way to the right, then click on the "Urban" Theme, download and also apply it.
2. Flash the .zip down below (you can also manually move all the apks inside to their destination in /data/app and correct the permissions, but that's a lot more work)
You can also use FlashFire (instead of a custom recovery) for the flash process. (Knox won't be triggered, stays at 0x0)

One Bug to add:
Changing the wallpaper using the wallpaper selector (Settings -> Personal -> Wallpaper), the top left drop down to choose Home Screen, Lock Screen or Both is there but the words are black on black.

That's Long press home...the reboot menu, has black text on black background.
Can you invert this screen also for the sms conversations?

I just saw that you don't use a compatible device (G920F/G925F), so no support from me. Reboot menu works perfectly on my device, you can also see it in the picture in OP.

Go in the SMS Settings, you can choose the background. Just choose a black picture.

1. I don't know. Try. The ZIP only overwrites some files in data/app and data/overlay, shouldn't brake any system functionality -> no bootloop possible
If the material design theme from @cambunch works for you, this does too.
2. You can flash over it. The memo app will stay material though.
Some apps like mood messenger let you change how the emoji looks inside the app. But the note 8 default emojis show up everywhere else. I don't really like some of them, particularly the roll eyes emoji. It look looks a smirk haha
Is there a way to change it? Say to iOS styles or even the old Android blobs?

Only way I know is if we get ROOT. Also the apps on the playstore require root also.

I use nextSMS (hancent) and it has very nice emojis, even animated emojis. Been using it for years and wouldn't even think about using another messaging app. Best feature is the popup notification so you can reply from the lock screen.

you should try Mood messenger. It does all you mentioned and even has floating head notifications. Animated emojis, and great customization for chats balloons and colors.
The emojis look fine in mood, it lets you choose what type but for other apps like Line Messaging, Viber, etc....it uses the defult Note 8 emojis...

Textra is a nice alternate messaging app. It has the ability to change the emoji style along with a lot of other customizations.

Did you go to stratum, choose the sans font, and press the circle at the bottom right to install the font in stratum. You have to install the font inside the first app you downloaded...

I flashed zip file with emojis with twrp and now everything is changed (I can even use those which came with Oreo even I'm on MM) only smilies stay unchanged (still htc style). Can someone guide me how to make them Oreo-styled too?

Have you installed Substratum, paid for Sungstratum (Andromeda if you are on 8.0), enabled USB-Debugging, enabled ADB on your phone, given Substratum and Sungstratum/Andromeda access, paid for the Status Bar icon for Samsung + extra app / substratum addon, enabled the theme, scrolled down to font and chosen the iOS emoji option, built and enabled it and then gone into settings where you enabled this as a font and restarted your phone?
Make sure you have followed all these otherwise it will not work.
It works. The fonts that is. Didn't have to use ADB command. Using a few Substratum themes inc Wings
I'm so damn lucky. I changed the Emojis to IOS 11 a while back with a custom overlay and I updated to Pie forgetting the overlay was there and to my surprise the Emojis are still IOS.
Idk what kinda bull**** is this but I'm not complaining ?
Google, F*** you for blocking overlays in Pie.
