I'm guessing that it adjusts the timeout accordingly.
Like if you were to put it down (but face-up) it'll decrease the timeout down to 15 seconds or something like that. Whereas if you're holding the phone normally, it'd be something like one minute.
Probably just smart stay esque feature.
Quick check of camera to see if your looking at the phone. Not like this is a Samsung thing, there are apps in the play store that do this.
Yeah it's screen time out so if you set it for 1 minute the screen will stay on for 1 minute then shut down
Yeah its like smart stay, try waving your hand in front of the phone and not touch the phone, it wont sleep. Dont work very well as sometimes I lie phone down for a sec but as there is no movement it sleeps quickly.

Nice. I keep wondering why HTC doesn't advertise some of these features - Samsung keeps touting them but even though HTC has something similar, sometimes better and sometimes not, it isn't mentioned anywhere. They really need to up their marketing efforts.

It is autosleep OR a time. So it's definitely not 1 minute. Will have to try this
I sent the question to HTC & today got this lame answer:
Please note that you can use the sleep mode in order to put the device in standby mode when you are not using the screen for a long time the screen will go in sleep mode " Standby" automatically

After doing some testing, I have found the following pattern with "Auto sleep":
If the device is held vertical (holding the phone up) or at an angle, in other words, you are actually looking at the screen; the display will sleep in about 1 minute of not touching the display.
If the device, after use, is put on a table (horizontally), the display will sleep in about 15 seconds.
So it seems that "Auto sleep" uses the gyro sensor, not the Camera.
Sounds similar to Screeble. ...a must-have app IMO.
I think auto sleep uses the camera and the proximity sensor to determine if you're looking at the phone, because for down reason it doesn't work in a completely dark environment like a bedroom at night, even though I was looking at the phone dead on..... It's an interesting feature nonetheless

No must-have anymore... with this auto sleep function built in. It's in HTC One X too with the 4.2.2 update.

As stated before, it's probably using sensors to increase time-out, not to disable time-out entirely, like smart-stay does, probably using less energy then smart-stay.

Will give it a try since it is one less app on the phone... I like that I could set up the angle for which it is activated both for portrait and landscape with Screeble. I don't control anything with the sleep function. Also, I get the impression the phone will still shut off at some point...doesn't with Screeble.

I was intrigued to know the answer myself. Not being able to find the answer, I tried the following on my phone:
I placed the phone horizontally on a table and left it there without touching the screen or moving it until the screen turned off. It took 1 minute for the screen to time out.
I placed the phone at an angle (approximately 45 degrees) and left it still without touching the screen or moving it until the screen turned off. Again, it took 1 minute for the screen to time out.
I grabbed the phone and moved it constantly without touching the screen. I keep doing this for over 2 minutes and the screen never timed out. I got bored, so I put the phone down and from that moment, it took 1 minute for the screen to time out. I tried this at different angles and I realized the angle doesn't really matter as long as the phone is in motion.
This made me to conclude the phone uses the the gyroscope when "auto sleep" is selected to determine when to turn off the screen.
I might be wrong but you can try this yourself. I hope it helps!

What rom version are you running? What you explained would explain why the phone does not sleep when I put it down in the car's cupholder, as long as the car is moving the phone would vibrate/shake & hence does not turn off the display. This is with the Android 4.3 updates (leaks & official 3.22 developer edition).
Previously, Android 4.1 & 4.2 roms, if the device was held vertical (holding the phone up) or at an angle, in other words, display would sleep in about 1 minute of not touching the display. If the device, after use, was put on a table (horizontally), the display would sleep in about 15 seconds.

I'm using CleanRom 6 with Android 4.3. Now that you mention it, I realize I hadn't noticed this on 4.1 and 4.2. I use Pandora all the time. I started wondering when my phone would stay up the whole time I was driving. I never had this issue with 4.1 and 4.2. Good to know!

Incertcoin (on SVN R111) now has the auto sleep working like before, 1 minute if held upright, or 15 seconds if placed on a table. I think @baadnewz used the "SmartDim.apk" from an older rom that before auto sleep changed .

yes i used the 4.2.2 base one because i didn't have time to properly debug the current one and fix, but so far using the old one doesn't break anything it just fixes the issue. credits are due to @yxtl he had the issue and stress him enough to make trial and error .
I believe it uses the gyro/motion sensors to adjust the timeout...if I have my HTC One docked in my car with auto sleep enabled, it will never time out the screen, unless I come to a light and stop...but the motion of the car actually on the road is enough to keep it alive.

I just got the phone last week and it’s always had a screen protector on it. I know many have issues with the proximity sensor covered but I don’t get how the phone should work. All my other phones turn off the display as you put the phone to your ear and on again if you move it away to look at something or end the call. The Nexus 6 just stays on until the screen time out and then I have to tap the power button to get the screen back.
I installed a proximity sensor app (Proximity Sensor Finder) and it seems to work fine though I don’t know what the readings would be without the screen protector covering it. It shows 5.000305cm until my hand gets within two inches or so and it jumps to 0. The app says some sensors are discrete so seems ok and the readings are very consistent and fast. So why is the screen not turning off?
Also, the Ambient display setting says it will turn on the display when you pick up the phone or get notifications. Never worked. ???

P.S. Why in God’s name are the volume buttons and to a lesser extent, the power button, dead center of the phone? I hit them every flipping time I pick it up. Is there a way to disable the volume buttons when the screen is off?

my suggestion would be to take your screen protector off. when you pull away from thd phone, the screen should pop on, but it not doung that for you. over the past 8 months or so, ive been reading about this same issue. and its always fixed by raking off the screen protector. im fuessing that your screen protector is covering one of your sensors.

your phone has its own proximity sensor thats being blocked by your screen protector, probably. im telling you that of the very many that have been reporting thus issue, have no more issue when they remove the screen protector. its worth a try, isnt it?

for most ppl it stays off, a few that ive read stay on non stop.
for example.. if it doesnt "see" your face get close, it wont turn off the screen.

Kewl. He needs to make sure ambient display is on in display settings. Also the buttons are in middle of phone so you can reach them holding phone normally.

Yea, but the protector would not be usable afterwards and it was really hard to get it on clean and lined up and the sensor readings are the same. I thought the folks that had problems had stuck or sporadic readings.

Mine can be toggled on and off with the power button, never gets stuck. It just acts like the proximity sensor mode during a call never activates. It only powers off after the normal screen timeout if you are still on the phone. The sensor does see me and sets the value the zero.

It’s on, even tried toggling it.
The buttons should be higher. I understand you can’t reach the power button on larger phones if on top of the phone but putting the volume at the center of gravity is crazy. It’s actually noticeably difficult to hold the phone without it dipping when grabbing it lower and that’s after training myself to grab it lower. I still forget and grab it in the middle like any brick sized object. I'm old, hands weak.
I have read here, somewhere, that the proximity sensor does not have a variable output. It's either off or on, so to speak.

Probably yes but everyone who had a screen protector without a sensor cut out had to change it for one with a sensor cut out.
This is step 1. Even if this isn't the cause, it will cause problems later.
You say not variable. Sure on or off. That said, a protector can limit how close the "close" reference can be identified at.
Step 2 is a factory reset.
Unfortunately, can't troubleshooting without doing these steps.

That is my understanding also and someone posted above that they have the same readings from the sensor without a screen protector. They did not say but I’m assuming their phone works as it should when on a call. I know, I know. I’ve read that many have had issues with screen protectors but I thought the folks that checked saw that the proximity sensor readings were also bad. Mine seem to be just what the phone would want to see.
I will take it off at some point and I guess I’ll be the first to verify that even if you use an app to monitor the proximity sensor readings and they look normal the protector can still cause an issue or it is something else.
I did find that the Ambient display will not work without screen lock turned on.

True, because it needs a lock screen to display it.
The screen worked as it should randomly the other day. Only on the one call. I pulled the phone away to look at something and it turned the screen on. Put it to my ear and what do you know, it turned the screen off. Not worked again so far and I ran the sensor app right after the call and it showed just what it always has, zero. Anything close to the phone you get a zero every time, right away. The phone app just ignores the zero reading.
This has always been confusing and I am looking for clarification on the Lock Screen/ Screen dimming, etc.
So I went into the display settings and set it not to turn off for 1 minute. Then I checked the power saving settings just to be sure the screen would not go dim or lock after 5 seconds. That did not work. Then I checked the security settings to see if something was over ridding every other time out setting and I am lost. Either these settings have never really worked since the original note and android/ google is lazy or I am not doing something right.
Dose anyone have a step by step walk through of all the settings that would affect when the screen dimms and when it locks? (Sometimes I am running music through blue tooth and I don't want to the screen to dim for specific applications also. There has to be a setting somewhere because Google Maps does not allow the screen to dim or lock when in nav mode.

I really wish someone would have answered your question. Mainly since I have the same freaking problem.
When the phone app is running, I am constantly getting dimmed, seconds only to do something.
Tonight I was using an app that monitors BBQ temperatures. Always dims to fast. Set the screen timeout for 10 minutes. Still dimmed after 30 seconds or so.
How does this work? I'm not sure the screen timeout setting does anything.
The screen diming feature is part of the auto brightness function and works by using the ambiant light sensor to adjust the brightness of the display. According to the amount of light detected in front of the display.
Screen locking happens when you haven't used your device for a specific amount of time.

It dims before it locks. That's what I was referring to. I think the OP was as well.
I set the display for 10 minute timeout. It dims and locks the screen in less than a minute. I can't figure out how to stop it.
Is that a clearer question?
Well my screen dims for some seconds before going out, but, always as per the time I set , for instance, if I set to go out after 5 mins of inactivity, it dims after 4 mins 55 seconds, then goes out, I dont use autobrightness, and I use entertainment mode
It was secure lock time setting.
It was disregarding the screen timeout.
My screen timeout is at ten minutes but the screen dims and turns off after 10 seconds and it's incredibly bothersome when trying to read an ebook for example. Have you encountered this? Any suggestions?

Doesn't AOD dim after a while after awhile so as not make the pixels burn unevenly long term? Just use a clock if you want it to be on long.

The problem is the screen dimming after ten seconds not the AOD display. I turned off the AOD display and it still dims too fast.

GO to Settings, advanced features and select 'Smart Stay' to on position.
Your screen will time out to whatever you've set it in display settings, but smart stay will stop that happening if it know you're watching something

That is better than before but still not what I want. I basically want the phone screen to be on until I turn it off or the amount of time I put on the screen timeout elapses. Is this just impossible on this expensive device?

I'm afraid the max is 10min in screen settings.
The only other way is in developer options, then 'stay awake always' but this only allows this during charging(plugged in)
To enable dev option, you need to go to settings/about phone/software information, then tap build number around 7-8 times

I just checked and I do not see it on mine at all. T-mobile version.
No battery drain on mine either.
Possibly disable the face unlock, its going to save alot of battery for you.

It definitely seems to be auto brightness, I turned it off, charged the phone to 100%, and today CameraLightSensor it not showing in the battery usage at all.

Same thing on my T-Mobile model - 3.1% over 9 hours. I have not checked my unlocked model, as its still in the box.
Have you noticed the 'ring" of pixels around the camera changing color to black when using the phone? I notice it mostly when browsing the web, or on a phone call.
Hard to describe what it is, but a "ring" about 5 px wide turns black or dark grey around the front camera just for a second. Is that the light sensor thing?

Definitely when you turn off auto brightness, the CameraLightSensor is not working in the background. But it must be a software glitch, it should be active only when the screen is on, it shouldn't be active while the device is in sleep.

I spoke too soon. Even with auto brightness turned off, the flashing ring of pixels around the camera still persist. ?
Edit: Sent in an error report along with two of them about the screen sensitivity issues.
Just checked my S20 FE 5G variant and it too has the CameraLightSensor draining at 2.8% for a total background usage of 8hrs and 28 minutes

How many hours SOT after auto-brightness is turned off please?
My country will only have the 4G Exynos type too.

Yes - Whether on the home screen, in a call, or in an app, there is a perfect "ring" (if you will) about 3-5 pixels wide around the camera that goes black for a split second or so and then changes back to the color of whatever it was displaying (think background color of a chrome tab, phone call, etc). It's impossible to catch as it happens so quickly. It's almost as if a perfect circle is turning off and then back on. And it has happened on both of my S20 FE, with or without adaptive brightness turned on.
I don't think it's something that screen recorder will even capture since that doesn't show the camera cutout, but I'll try!
EDIT: So I made a screen recording - and I think it was just the troubleshooting I needed to figure out what the problem is (was). . . When recording, the screen never shuts off, so there is no need for Smart Stay to activate (the camera checks to see if you're looking @ the phone to stay on). . . As soon as I stopped screen recording, that ring of pixels turned off and back on as it has been doing. I turned off Smart Stay, and it hasn't happened in the past 10 minutes or so. . .
I wonder if those that are seeing the high CameraLightSensor usage have Smart Stay turned on? It's not on by default - you have to look for it in settings.

I have smart stay off, accidentall touch protection off, face unlock off, and from today adaptive brightness off, and my CameraLightSensor is not working in the background when I turned it off. Auto brightness was definitely the culprit for me.
