Hello everyone,
I switched to Pixel 4 xl from Pixel 2 xl and I am very disappointed with its camera, the colors are not as natural as Pixel 2 xl and the selfie smooths the facial skin( face retouching is off) and it looks painted and unnatural.
Hope to fix this in the update because if not I will return to pixel 2xl
Do you think so too?

I politely disagree. I had the Pixel 2 XL for exactly 2 years and the Pixel 4 XL since release. The 4 XL is an improvement overall in stills and videos. Some situations it's less noticable than others but for sure I noticed it most in portrait mode, low light, night sight, and color saturation. For example, just look at the difference between these selfie pics. First pic is the 2 XL, 2nd pic is the 4 XL.

There's almost a haziness to the 2 XL while the 4 XL has punchier colors which my shirt is that red as well as the grass is that green. Of course the wider viewing angle of the 4 XL is a plus as well.

I've had each Pixel and I've also felt the cameras have improved with each phone and with the software updates. I rarely if ever use the camera and am not impressed with the quality of the pics and videos it produces. I find myself taking pictures and videos just to see how they come out and I'm always impressed. Not sure why you wouldn't have the same result.
The commenters here so far are pretty badly mistaken—they can be forgiven if they don't take many selfies, as the rear camera is largely identical to the 3xl/2xl in my one day of testing it.
But the selfie camera is a gigantic gaping astronomical downgrade from all three prior generations of pixel. There are threads about it here, here, here, and here just from a 2 second google search.
It's not even remotely close, except for in optimal lighting e.g. the first commenter's example—which by the way you can't see how out of focus the pixel 4 camera is because both images have been extremely compressed down to 1 or 2 megapixel resolution by XDA.
From what I've gathered, the selfie cam is such absolute dog **** because a few things have changed. In order of their impact on image clarity:
1. They chose a camera which literally can't focus and, worse, has a permanent focal length of 20ft which is a pretty ****ing far cry from standard selfie distance of 24in or less. This can be seen in the pictures from the reddit thread above where the LG logo 6ft behind me is more in focus than my face—a problem that doesn't present on the rear cam, which can focus and is therefore crystal clear.
2. They chose a camera without optical image stabilization. If I recall, both the 2xl and the 3xl had OIS on the selfie cam.
3. They disabled forcing HDR+. This is, to be fair, a small factor, as the 3xl and 2xl both took extremely crisp selfies with regular HDR or auto-HDR.
You can regain some clarity by using night mode for your selfies. But in general, the problem is an immutable hardware issue that will be present for the life of the device. Otherwise only take selfies in extremely good lighting—and even then, it's probably best to still use night mode.
But it's even worse than just all that. The selfie camera is just generally a ****show in suboptimal lighting. I don't have such an easy explanation for that because the colors should mostly come from the algorithmic processing, and they're very good on the rear camera.
The 2 XL and 3 XL didn't have OIS for the front facing camera. Pretty sure that's a rarity to begin with. The 3 XL did have front facing autofocus while the 2 XL didn't and then it was removed for the 4 XL. The 4 XL does have EIS for front facing video which makes a huge difference compared to the very shaky 2 XL.

Yes he stated they're fixed focus.
That's why I tend to use the 3 second timer to give it a better chance in focusing. I honestly haven't had the issue of it focusing on the background rather than the foreground.

That's a subset of #1 above: it doesn't have ANY kind if focus ability whether that be autofocus, tap to focus, or manual focus.
The problem however isn't simply a fixed focal length. Selfies have a predictable focal length of around 2 feet, so if it didn't have autofocus but the focal length was fixed at 2 feet there wouldn't be a problem. The problem, then, is that it has a fixed focal length of "infinity" (aka 20 feet). That's why objects behind the subject are more in focus.
But that alone doesn't account for all of the blurring.
Selfies are typically taken with one hand, a situation that's complicated by the fact that the single hand holding the camera can't stabilize itself because the thumb is used to press the shutter—causing additional jitter to an inherently unstable situation. Pixels have been able to maintain sharp selfies by mitigating this issue with OIS. But they took away OIS on the selfie cam of the Pixel 4 series.
And despite all of that, HDR+ is an incredibly robust processing algorithm that can significantly lower the impact of the problems above by combining the best parts of many images—but, you guessed it, they disabled the ability to force HDR+ on the Pixel 4 series.
The lack of autofocus is, therefore, only one component of a battery of fu.ckups all culminating in the absolute potato selfie cam on the Pixel 4.

So sick of reviewers saying the camera is crappy or the software is too slow. I have compared my Nexus 5 camera against these phones below and it is so night and day its sick. The nexus 5 camera takes phenomenal photos. The pics are crisp and clear and full of color. It sucks too because I really love my LG Optimus G pro but the camera is so bad I want to puke. In low light my S4 in night mode comes close but not close enough to the nexus 5. I think the only better camera I have tested was the iphone 5s which might even be on par. So don't worry about the camera as its spot on. The only reason I was going to go back to the OGP was the removable battery and the home button but man this nexus is nice. Guess its going to stay my main phone until something better comes along.

The camera app is horrendous. The iPhone's camera app is beautiful and simple and more functional. The software IS too slow. It takes forever to focus. There is no burst mode to speak of. The iPhone can take a hundred shots in the time it takes the Nexus 5 to take 5.
The camera module in the Nexus 5 is a good one, and the phone is capable of taking great pictures, but every piece of software between the module and your finger hitting the on screen button seems to be getting in the way and making achieving that perfect shot as hard as possible. Sorry to say, but your opinion is wrong. The Nexus 5 in its current state does not have a camera experience even remotely comparable to the iPhone 5s. All of the Galaxy phones take better pictures and have less trouble focusing and have a more feature rich camera app as well. You may be right about the Optimus G Pro, but 1/5 aint that good. Being able to point to a handful of absolutely stunning shots that came from a Nexus 5 doesn't prove anything. It doesn't tell you how many hundreds had to be thrown away or retaken because of being out of focus or having the exposure all wrong, or how frustrating an experience it was to achieve that shot.

Price aside, the Nexus 5 delivers solid if unspectacular image quality. It’s definitely a contender, though if image quality if your absolute priority, there are phones with better-performing cameras: the Nokia Lumia 1020, and (under most conditions) the Sony Xperia Z1, Samsung Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5s will deliver technically superior photos. Even Nokia’s 925 (and the 928 Verizon variant) will usually best the Nexus. The point is that apart from exotics like the 1020, the competition isn’t blowing the Nexus 5 out of the water. It takes good pictures. Just not quite as good as the best.
Where the Nexus 5 falls down is speed: the S4 and 5s don’t keep you waiting. The iPhone in particular is a speed demon. The 1020 lumbers a bit, but it’s mostly fast when it counts. If you’re used to the latest generation or two of phone cameras, the Nexus 5 camera app will frustrate you with its plodding and hesitation. On the other hand, if you’re someone who shoots scenes that hold still, the lack of speed may be a non-issue.

No way the Nexus 5 takes a better picture than the iPhone 5s especially with any low light situation. It is capable of taking good pictures in perfect conditions however. The real issue is the software completely sucks (terrible and slow focusing, etc) so no matter what you think, the average person is taking terrible pictures with the phone. And it is all because the camera software is terrible. There is no other way around it. So yes, it CAN take great shots. But most of the time it doesn't.
I have to agree with the guy, the Nexus 5 camera is not horrible but it seems quite a few devices are having issues which are most likely hardware or software related. My Nexus 5 camera is absolutely fine. I did notice the camera doesn't focus correctly on the subject, so don't snap a picture that isn't in focus or not focused on the right spot, that's on you.
I have a N5, iPhone 5, Note 2 and Galaxy S4 within my reach. Took them all for a spin today and lemme rate the cameras:
1. Galaxy S4. Camera is good, not bad software, no real issues at all.
2. Nexus 5. Yes the software sux but with Sur's Camera mod V1.3 it's better and I was able to get a better photo than the next 2 in almost every situation.
3. iPhone 5. Best software but the camera it self seems to be lacking. Especially in darker situations (today it was very wintery dark out there) so I had real trouble getting good clean photos.
4. Note 2. Pretty much on par with the iPhone but worse software and the camera it self is also pretty poor when compared to this bunch.
Honestly, I don't have too many complaints to the N5's camera considering the phone costs so much less than any of those did when they came out. Yes the software is the worst in the bunch but as it is SOFTware it can be changed and fixed and as long as the camera it self seems good, I can't see what all the fuss is about.
All this said, HDR has to be on. If it's off the photos are absolutely terrible for some reason.

I'm replying to you, but this goes to everybody that says the camera isn't slow or problematic when focusing:
You must not have kids or pets.
Trying to focus on something that is moving is an *impossible* feat with this phone. The phone can take great photos, but the image quality is *not* better than the iPhone 5S or Galaxy S4. Thinking it is means you're delusional, because every review site (including photography sites, where they specialize in determining exactly what we're talking about) agrees with me. The camera is adequate, but it is not a superb shooter. Most of that is arguably the software...since, with the right conditions, the phone *can* take great pictures. Until it's reliable though, in doing so, the camera isn't that helpful.
Have you thought that maybe your opinion is a bit biased? After taking side-by-side pictures using my GS4, iPhone 5S, and Nexus 5 I can easily see that the Nexus 5 only keeps up when people aren't moving or I'm able to really take the time to set up the shot. It takes *FAR* too long to open the camera app (which is a huge factor for a smartphone camera), and it takes *FAR* too long to actually take the shot (shutter-lag). I can go from hitting the power button to getting a well-focused picture on my GS4 or iPhone 5S in under 2 seconds...with the Nexus 5 that stretches to around 6-7 seconds, minimum. That's a huge difference when your kid just smacked herself in the face with cake and you want to get a picture before she wipes it off and starts screaming.
The Nexus 5 camera is adequate, but not superb.

Ok, moving targets noted but lets leave that out for a second and talk about standing still objects. Here the nexus camera takes the best photos. Plenty more detail, colors and light than all the others. This is what I am saying. I would attribute the lack of focusing on moving targets a software problem that hopefully will get fixed but in the end the Nexus 5 has the best camera module than the others. That is really what I am saying and honestly that is what really counts. If I want to take actions shots I will use my Canon 7D.

This is when I was taking a video. In video mode you can tap on the screen to take a picture while shooting video. I found that most of the pictures I took like this weren't blurry The weird thing also is that when you're in video mode there's ZSL (zero shutter lag) which there isn't normally. So for parts of the concert i'd just throw it into video mode and tap on the screen for the pictures. NOW, I know that the pictures would only be 1920x1080 instead of 3264x2448, but I prefer this. I HATE the 3264x2488 format, it looks to squareish for me lol. Also i'd rather the pictures be crisp and not blurry and a tad bit smaller then having them be blurry and bigger lol. Just my thoughts
The camera is fine, the software is terrible so the camera might as well suck. Pictures are typically out of focus after repeat attempts to get it to focus.

You are a looser tester.
S4 camera is way much better than N5. It's higher mpix and it focuses twice much faster.
Hasn't Google already addressed the camera issue? It's already been said that Google are working on the software side since they know it's ruining photos.
I seriously love my Nexus 5 camera, sure it has some downsides like shooting time etc.. but overall the quality of pictures I took and HDR+ was a huge improvement over my nexus 4 and even my GS4. OIS was a huge help I do have shaky hands
Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Google Pixel 2 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Took some sample pictures with Pixel 1 and Pixel 2, compared images on PC, they look identical but some are better on Pixel 1. Pixel 2 colors are more saturated and there is no flare....
I have been comparing the photos from the Pixel 2 to the iPhone 8 Plus if anyone is interested ?
Daylight and Night time
Took pictures today after dusk, same thing. Most images look identical to Pixel 1, but when I zoom in I can see that lens on Pixel 1 is a little bit sharper with less noise.
Edit: also noticed that automatic white balancing is off sometimes. Pixel 1 gets it right while Pixel 2 doesn't.
But all negatives are relatively small, I wouldn't say one is better then another
I don't find the camera miles better than previous phones I've owned (S7, S8, 5s pixel port etc). But it's capable, fast, a good allrounder and DOF mode is okay for a single lens construction. Hdr+ is a joy and considered, that Google don't yet utilize the new chip empowering this function it's FAST.

I have been able to take amazing pictures with the N5,N5X,N6P and now with the Pixel 2.
HDR+ does a great job in all these phones I owned.
The main quality difference between the N5 and the latest 3 I mentioned, are the megapixels. (But HDR+ quality was still solid in the old 5).
They main difference between the 5X/6P and the Pixel 2 is the speed to take photos, launch the camera, focus and process the HDR+ but the quality is really close.
I've decided to stick with HDR+ enhanced (which is similar to the old HDR+ in the Nexus) to minimise the risk of getting unfocused areas that sometimes with the HDR+ are not so detailed. So I'm sacrificing speed to capture photos to try to get always a perfect HDR+ shot.

I don't know because I stopped using cameras for my trips, since I got a Nexus 5 with HDR+ and before that I mostly used the typical compact Sony cyber shot with Carl Zeiss lense.
And I only regret to use smartphone as main camera when I switched from the N5 to Z5 Compact and went to Paris and took ugly photos. Specially nightly photos and closeup photos. This is the main reason I sold that phone after 6 months and went for the 5X.
Probably you can get better details with those cameras you mention. But there are some key features in HDR+ (this is all post processing) that do a lot of magic:
- Focus in most of the areas. (You can focus on a person's face and still capture the details behind a window that points to the street / or the clouds in the sky/ or other faces; as if you had focused directly on that window or clouds).
- More dark skies at night. The night photos look amazing. Nightly skies try to be converted to a more solid dark colour.
- Same good quality with sunny photos that have a lot of sunlight or sun rays and you can't see well trough the camera app when taking the photo because of the high brightness. After HDR+ you could have a good result more opaque.
Other things I like from the latest Google phones cameras:
- Panoramas. Sometimes I take a panorama with just 1 captured image, because of the increased FoV to fit a building. And sometimes you need to take more than 1 because the building still doesn't fit.
- Capture photos when walking: In previous HDR+ Nexus cameras when you press the shutter, camera starts capturing and you can have blurry photos if you were moving. In The Pixel 2 when I press the shutter of the camera (also walking and with HDR+ enhanced) phone camera blocks and take some time to capture to maximize the possibility of a crisp shot. (And if you press the shutter and starts shaking the camera it won't capture till you stop shaking)
So I'm taking photos when I don't have time to stop now.
- Minimum focus distance: I love close-ups / macro shots and the latest Google phones had a good minimum focus distance and mixed with HDR+ the result is amazing.
(The Z5 Compact I owned used to have a wide angle but terrible minimum focus distance I hate this).
What I don't really care is the new portrait mode. You get 2 photos when using it. With blurry unfocused areas and the original with no blur. I think this is only useful for CV photos or some close-ups or special cases. There is a lot of people that loves this feature. I personally prefer the photo that contains more data for 99% of my captures.

Absolutely love the camera on my Pixel 2. Below are some examples shot really quickly from The Shard in London.
I had the iPhone 8 plus briefly and although similar, I'd probably say the Pixel 2 is a bit better, I also think the portrait mode is insanely good considering it only has one camera! :highfive:

absolutely not.
however, the pixel takes decent pictures completely automatically while you can completely mess up a picture on a mid range a mirrorless camera if you don't know how to use the settings - and the fully automatic mode of the mirrorless cameras tend not to be actually as good as the pixel
(technically, the pixel is also a mirrorless camera btw - just that the sensor and lens are tiny, get less light and aren't as sharp, basically - but they have much better automatic processing)

No you can't activate it, not sure if it's software or some hardware thing. Maybe Google will enable it later
This is really frustrating but most of the time when I'm taking a photo I'm getting this message "sharpening your photo please steady the device". I thought it might be the Master AI so in turned that off... Still happens. Especially with low light shots or zoomed in shots even in bright light.
How the heck do I stop this from happening?? It's so frustrating!
It's when the camera combining the monochrome data to increase detail.

Use a different camera app or shoot RAW.
It's a baked in part of Huawei multi sensor processing.
Sent from my CLT-L29 using Tapatalk
Basically you can use another app, lose detail and lose the message.
It seems to be a bug in the camera software. It does not handle the telephoto zoom correctly and applies sharpening algorithms when not necessary.
Have a look at the report from Android Authority https://www.androidauthority.com/huawei-camera-software-867702/

I'm saying it's a bug because it should not run all processes when zooming with the telephoto. In Android Authority's samples you can see that the post processing seems to run like it is in digital zoom mode even if it's optical.
It's a totaly normal process, and you see the messages when the camera apllies HDR color correction to the photo. Other smartphones just say HDR during the photo saving, this one says this message. It's not a bug, and there's no way of disabling it. It's just NORMAL.
Sent from my Huawei P20 PRO
I understand this message to mean "Please wait while I ruin your photo."
I always get it (literally 100% of the time) when I'm using the 3x zoom and the result is always an absolutely hideous photo in which all detail has been completely destroyed. For some reason the resulting image is always 10MP, which makes me think it was taken using the 40MP sensor and binned down, however it's shot at f2.4 and the phone reports an 80mm equivalent focal length, which suggests the 3x zoom lens but that's an 8MP sensor... So just what the hell is going on? Here's an imgur album of a photo supposedly taken using the zoom lens in ideal photography conditions this morning. The light was very good. I used the Photo mode with AI master turned off, resolution set to 10MP in the settings, standard color setting, 4D predictive focus on.
Unfortunately I can't post links but go to imgur.com album /a/JEMOtHG.
It looked fine on the phone's screen but it looks hideous on a larger screen. Just look at the 100% crop - it would make a lovely watercolor painting. The photo has been sharpened to oblivion and completely ruined. The camera has retained highlights in the clouds to create an unrealistic, though beautiful IMO, cloudscape while blowing away highlights on the ships. The shadows on the trees in the foreground are mangled to the point that it looks like a single mass. This photo is unequivocally garbage.
In fact, 70% of the photos this phone takes look like total garbage. They're not just mediocre, they're bad. They look like enlarged and sharpened photos taken with an ancient, low-resolution digital camera. Maybe it's because I have no idea what the phone's actually doing with its hardware when I'm using it because the software is so bad? It just does stuff contrary to what I might expect based on the information provided at the time of the exposure and the result is invariably bad. I've tried every mode and had zero success in any mode.
Even when using the main sensor, if the lighting is slightly dim, out comes the sharpening and noise-reduction algorithm and out go your details. Even in situations where it's not really necessary, like in good indoor light, the phone goes mental with its post-processing. It even does it in broad daylight when there's a big difference in highlights and/or in the scene. If you have harsh, directional sunlight in one part of the scene, expect it to be sharpened to death.
I read all the glowing reviews and they leave me wondering whether everyone's crazy or whether I am. I really want to like this phone but the camera is 3 or 4 out of 10 so far. It makes me wonder whether Huawei's engineers have ever seen a photo before.
I'm inclined to return this phone. The camera is so bad that I'd rather go back to my Nexus 6P, which is 2.5 years old and takes effortlessly, consistently and predictably superior photos.
It keeps the detail when it says it on mine with 3x zoom.
I think maybe your technique is off?

What technique do you propose? I don't see any options or means to remedy the problem. It seems to me that no matter what mode I shoot or what settings I toggle, I get images that are post-processed to oblivion when using the 3x zoom, and usually when using the main sensor too.
I'd love to hear what you're doing that's giving you results you're happy with. My guess is that you're also on a newer build - I've got the North American variant CLT-L04 8.1.0.109(C792).
Incidentally, your attachment is scaled down to a small fraction of its original size so it doesn't really demonstrate much.
The 109 firmware is pretty old by now, things got better with the camera when you run firmware 128 or the latest 131. Still things could be improved but it is now better than in the early days of firmware releases.

This is taken with 5x zoom by hand on auto. I see no problem at all. In fact it's outstanding if consider its taken by hand.

I definitely think it's your firmware. Things have improved pretty dramatically since your version.
Well that sucks, since no newer firmware is available to me yet. I find it hard to believe Huawei would ship a premium photography-centric device with software that's so defective it can hardly take a photo worth keeping, or that it's selling functionally defective devices with this firmware 2 months after launch. Then again, maybe I shouldn't be too surprised.
I guess I'm at the right place if I want to solve this problem myself but I think I might just take it back and not void my warranty or trouble myself any further. This is an excellent phone and I want to keep it but I'm disappointed - photography should have been the first thing they got right and they fumbled.
Too bad because the specs are brilliant and the cameras are awesome in terms of the hardware. In practice, though, it always comes down to software. Thanks for your help, all.

Natural colours and AI off to reduce the amount of processing.
When using zoom, make sure you wait for the stabilisation to start and tuck your elbows in. Where possible use the software shutter button over the volume rocker as it causes less movement.

inepty, I second your remarks. That's what I have experienced, too, so far, and I don't think it got much better on .128 which I am using.
A few things to keep in mind:
- The 3x zoom only kicks in if you do not focus to anything closer to 1-1.5 metres. If you do, it will use the digital zoom which looks crappy.
- If you use Auto, Portrait or HDR mode, the images WILL be heavily processed
- If you use Aperture or Pro mode, they will NOT. I am so far happy with the results of these two modes.
- The monochrome mode seems not to suffer from the watercolor effects and the overprocessed look, even though the sensor is smaller
- Turn off the AI. It's pointless. It's optimized for poppy instagram style pictures. If you want this, go ahead. If you want more natural pictures, turn it off.
- Try different camera apps like Open Camera. You will of course lose fancy stuff like HDR, Zoom etc., but the resulting images are much more natural without any oversharpening or watercolor effects. You will have some grain, tho (because no noise reduction).
- The Zoom is a bit finicky. Sometimes, it gives me really good, clear and beautiful results, sometimes it looks like a crappy digital zoom picture, even though the exifs state that the zoom lens was used. Not sure what's the problem behind this.
- The night mode is a bit of a tech gimmick. Yep, it shoots photos at night but they are really blurry and lack details. If you resize them to 1000px, they will look great, but they are not made for larger resolutions or big screens. I know, a blurry picture is better than no picture at all, but I wouldn't use it the way Huawei seems to advertise it (Hey, take stunning city photos at night!) because the results are messy, unless resized to a stamp.
- And finally: The raw files are quite good most of the time. For pictures that are important (Aka: Photography instead of documentation), it's probably best to use the raw file and develop this.

If you select 3x zoom it uses that lens.
It doesn't use digital zoom just because you're close to the subject.
The stabilisation struggles to engage on close subject, so this may be the issue you're encountering.
These are 1x then 3x then 5x then 10x
Even the 10x digital zoom doesn't look as bad as people seem to be making out.
All are auto, standard colour, no AI in poor light.

Nope, it doesn't work that easily, at least on my device. You can select 3x zoom and still get a digital zoom image not shot with the tele lens. Try it! Try close distance and fast burts, you will see it yourself.
And please do post full resolutions of your images. Anything moderately sharp can look good at this small size.
Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Razer Phone 2 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
i found the stock camera app to be pretty poor coming from a pixel 2 like it was almost dealbreaking. I also have an essential phone that needed a google cam port to be usable. Razer's photo app does pretty good, minus not having slow motion, beating all my previous phones in clarity, quality and ability to take photos of an always moving 2 year old with very minimal, if any, motion blur, and in low light without flash and no visible grainyness. But to boost your cameras performance, Gcam works wonders (slow motion still does not work) Beware of file sizes of videos, though... An 8 minute 4k video of my daughter was a whopping 2.5gb... and when you take photos at the same time you're recording, they come out much darker than just taking a photo by itself. Photo quality is outstanding, taking bright, clear photos in low light with no motion blur what so ever, and with no visible grainyness or loss of color accuracy. People with high end iPhones and Samsung devices were amazed at the photo quality of the Razer 2 compared to their phones...so a big plus for this phone. I have NO idea what people we're talking about when they said the camera was crap... As far as the photo album app, I think the one that comes with the phone totally sucks, it's the Google albums app, which for me is over complicated, I have no idea how to browse it, or organize it, or create folders, or move them to folders...so, I downloaded a very simple, easy to use gallery app that fits all my needs. VERY simple to understand, I can move things around, create new folders, etc. If you're interested in it, here's the link.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobiletools.gallery.pro
It reminds me of the simpler album apps that came with earlier versions of Android Galaxy phones, which is what I'm used to.
EDIT- 10/16/19
Finally found a camera app that makes full use of the camera. Gcam
Version 6.2.030. greatly increased clarity, amazing low light performance, night mode, multiple resolutions to choose from, hdr, hdr+, 4k video, bokke effect in portrait mode, which makes a HUGE improvement in photo dramatic effect when taking pictures of people, and most importantly, to me at least, VERIFIED WORKING SLOW MOTION AND TIME LAPSE... Which for some STUPID REASON Razer has OMITTED from even their latest software update, posted only a couple days ago. Link below for the gcam mod.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rAgBKJ9ZixrsfP2_29HHJabm-2g9etLY/view?usp=drivesdk

Not my work, BTW. Simply pointing a link at someone else's work.

How do you like the Razer 2 w/gcam compared to the Pixel 2?
I just installed the RP 2 gcam from the link and only saw a lowlight/indoors performance difference while indoors. Once I went outside there was a bit of a split decision. On one hand the dynamic range of gcam was a lot better and maintained clear details in the image. There were a couple of occassions where the stock camera app took a more appealing picture. Most of the pics while outside in good natural light were almost identical; only zooming in all the way and searching would you see the difference. Again, that goes back to the dynamic range and how the apps process the images once you take the picture. At some point we need to stop splitting hairs on the most minor detail that really isn't discernable unless you zoom in 300% an search vice when you look at the normal zoom image. I have noticed however, the RP2 does over process more often than not, leading to it softening the image way too much causing a slight blur in the details. But other times it takes really good pictures.
I just uninstalled the gcam app now. I don't know what happened but was using the camera a few hours after installing and testing it out and I noticed major artifacts, color distortion and image distortion when I am looking at the screen and moving the phone around to different subjects. I also notice it having a real hard time adjusting the exposure and balance. The removal of the gcam app hasn't seemed to fix anything. I may have to reset the phone to get it functioning again.

Not bad...
I just got the phone, and knew going into it the camera was going to be bad (doubly bad considering I was coming from an LG V20!). What I didn't expect was just how bad HDR is on the stock app. It's rather laughable. The first image is a normal photo on the telephoto lens. The second photo is an HDR shot on the same lens. I plan to play around with Gcam, but HDR will never see the light of day on my stock app. Lol
Not as good as my motorola z2 force. Really, very bad! I can only play games now. . . . Maybe gaming phones can only play games.
Hello everyone,
I have been using my oneplus 7 pro for a few hours now, overall it's a great phone.
My only complaint so far is Nightscape mode, it takes awful photos, I downloaded Gcam *Google camera* and tested it out for a bit, what I could get out of this is that in comparison with Nightscape mode, Gcam takes it's time taking the picture, while Nightscape mode is done in a second, this is very strange, as a result I get white dots in my photos, as you can see in the images I uploaded.
When I went into settings on Gcam, I found out that it only uses 12mp, I don't understand why this is happening.
Can any of you make a similar comparison and share it in this thread?
Thank you
personally i like the OP photo, colors look way better, less noise. sure its not as bright but come on, it looks pitch black.
do some post processing and im sure youll get a better image than GCAM.
what do you expect from phones?
People keep saying they're disappointed in the camera, but it sounds like they're really just disappointed in the Oneplus camera app. Clearly the camera is capable of good things, based on the GCam user experiences, so what is there to be upset about?
This are my samples, the darkest one is the stock in auto mode, the slight brighter one is the nightscape mode, and the brightest is gcam night sight

I totally agree with you, but this has been a issue in the past, now we have "2.0" and Google camera is still better.
The white dots are very strange, I see them in every photo I take with the original camera app in Nightscape mode.
Other phones will never be able to take the same photos as a Pixel phone, there's an additional processor that was added to those phones called the Pixel Visual Core, due to this, comparing shots isn't very helpful as the two devices will not be on an equal playing field. They don't even have the same camera models.
That additional image processor will also be the reason that the Pixel's night time images are far superior.

The Pixel 3a and 3a XL don't have the Pixel Visual Core yet they are taking pictures the same as the Pixel 3 and 3 XL.
So would it be a fair playing field to compare to the Pixel 3a?

I totally agree with you, but this has been a issue in the past, now we have "2.0" and Google camera is still better.
The white dots are very strange, I see them in every photo I take with the original camera app in Nightscape mode.

so if you had the S10 plus you'd have the same complaint right?
stop comparing everything to googles camera, its getting tiring - google has the visual core, and optimize the hell out of their post processing algo's not even huawei does what the pixels do
i have a pixel 3xl and the op7pro and 99% of the time you can barely tell the difference (on latest 9.5.5) and with the difference you can see you can easily compensate via post processing like snapseed to get the desired look.
and personally, i liked the OP nightscape, it looked more in-focus, colors looked true and the gcam blew out the lamp post.
just wait for a working port of gcam and use that instead. but im getting tired of people complaining and comparing to the pixel 3xl, day shots are identical, you cant expect every phone to perform the same in low light/night.
also look at the gcam vs op nightsight, you realize they both expose the same details in the scene, OP does a better job at keeping neutral lighting while pixel bumps the contrast and highlights up eventhough they both show the EXACT SAME SCENE.
the next person to compare the pixel camera to the OP is going to make me burn my pixel 3xl in a fire pit.
dont make me do it

turn off "scene content detection" and watch the magic happen

2.0 what? Are you talking about night mode 2.0? If so that has nothing to do with nightscape, capturing photos or anything to do with the camera at all. Night mode 2.0 is an upgrade to the night mode for your screen to be turned Amber at night time. Has nothing to do with the camera at all.
