Hello, simple question: I've converted my N960W running Android 9 into a N960U1 running Android 10.
I've read somewhere that Samsung can somehow detect when you flash a firmware from a different model, and blocks OTA updates. Is it true?

I've switched back and fort and never had an issue getting OTA. It's weird that some folks are affected that way and others are not.
Honestly N960W is almost similar to stock android, you get stock caller ID & block, Samsung cloud, and security features which are not available in carrier roms, All of carrier rom comes with bloatwares on them as well.
---------- Post added at 07:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:17 PM ----------
If you are okay with Andriod 10 thats fine as you won't be getting any more android update on note 9, so its totally fine even if you not getting any OTA updates

Unfortunately, the stock Videotron "w" rom my phone comes with has some carrier crap (un-deleteable bookmarks and apps mostly, related to different media companies/newspapers belonging to Videotron's owner like an app called J5, Journal de Montreal/Quebec bookmarks, etc.)
The U1 ROM is 100% clean

No just download the latest U1 rom and flash it with the patched version of Odin here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/patched-odin-3-13-1-t3762572
That will factory reset your device though so backup your stuff first
And to answer the question I've asked in this thread, I've received the February OTA update a few days ago

Is it better to use HOME_CSC_ or CSC_ when going from 960W to U1?

Hey there, might be a simple question but I can't get a straight answer.
So I have a n920i from Singapore and want to be ready to unroot if marshmallow comes up. So I checked the firmware compilation on Sammobile. The question is, can I simply install any firmware for the n920i or do I have to take the exact matching one. Like... Can i take one from Australia instead of Singapore. Because the one from Singapore supports very little languages (only 3) by default.
Here's a screen of my current software.
I believe you can. I bought my 920i from eBay which is not aussie stocks and I just flash the Aussie firmware. So far it has been working great not a single issues.
Oh, I have the Australia N920I and was thinking of flashing the singapore N920I firmware because it is the latest. Anyone do this?

The country of the firmware doesn't matter, if it is for your device model it should work fine.

Of your using the Australian one... Could you confirm that there's the German language file pre installed?
You can install any other firmware but make sure that firmware you getting matching firmware for 920i
Just check out from sammobile

I believe the Aussie is newer than the Singapore version at least that's what I have checked at Sammobile recently. Anyway I just flash the Aussie thought maybe it's better since I'm using the phone locally baseband wise.
The Aussie version latest firmware is aug. 10, 2015.
The Singapore latest firmware version is October 2015. Am I seeing this wrong?

If you just flash the firmware file using Odin you will not lose any data. I have done this numerous times.
There are four files in the zip? I am assuming the firmware is the AP?

If you are referring to non carrier then you should just install the xsa or Australia only. Not the optus or voda. By the way firmware is the stock rom you downloaded from the Sammobile.
I have the non carrier n920i Australia. I downloaded the full firmware and there were 4 files inside. Bl, ap, CSC, and cp. Do I need to flash just 1file or all. Sorry and thanks for your help

I just meant not wiping the phone or data first. I have flashed three or four firmware versions and never lost data as long as I didn't wipe.
Edit: I have not flashed any firmware from a different region though.

I would flash the entire firmware. I am pretty sure if you mix and match parts of firmware it will trip Knox. At the very least it will break things like Google Play Movies & TV. At least it broke mine.

I believe you can flash different region as long as for they are the same model such as n920i or c..or g. ..or whatever model is.
And yes you are right. ..why take the risk in messing up your phone when it is better to just flashing the whole firmware rather than part here and there.
So that means it would be possible for me to just flash a marshmallow firmware if available and have done? Without wiping and stuff I mean...

You can but some settings could cause issues if you go to a different version of android without wiping (ie 4.4.x to 5.0.x or 5.1.x to 6.0.x) which is why I always wipe between versions and recommend others do so
I've got the N920I Singapore version, flashed AU FW several times, back and forth between Sing and Aus. So long as you have a N920I no issues with any of the FW. Make sure you flash using the latest 3.10.7 Odin though. Older version do not work
Thank u all for your quick and precise responses!

It's really all personal preference....but both devices can be flashed with either firmware...same...I have flashed the SPR, XAS, and ran the unlocked firmware XAA...I'm sticking with the unlocked firmware XAA because of the download booster but either device can do any of the firmware for you...
Can you show me the link for the Unlocked Firmware download ? It was recently taken down.. So I can basically keep the sprint and debloat it with no problems ?
Just registered with Sammobile and downloaded the Unknown XAS for my Sprint (SM-N950U).. So the Sprint bloatware automatically will be deleted, per following the download instructions ?

If the bloatware is all you're trying to remove you can do that with either Package Disabler Pro or BK Disabler. I use the latter but either gives you the ability to debloat or disable pretty much anything on the phone whether it be on the system side or the installed side. Most people get Unlocked for the freedom to take their device to any carrier without having to use their branded phones or for going overseas and not getting killed by carrier overages. But if it's just bloatware that can easily be removed with either of the options above and you won't need root either. I removed a lot of mine and between that and changing my animations to .5 in Developer Options my phone FLIES.
Ok quick question, will the Unlocked Note 8 (N950F) work on the Sprint Network without any issues and if so what would those be?

If you use the modified Prince Comsy Odin you should be able to.
Make sure you edit the Odin config file's UMS/Patch setting from 0 to 1.
Load as follows:
BL file in BL slot,
AP file in AP slot,
CP file in CP slot,
CSC file in CSC Slot (not HOME_CSC),
UMS slot empty....the userdata file is in the AP for the Unlocked software.
Hope this helps,

I want to get the note 8 unlocked from bestbuy and use it on sprint as well. I've been away from android for 2 years. If I flash the sprint firmware will I get regular sprint updates or will I have to manually update the firmware when it's released. I mainly want to do the sprint firmware bc of the visual voicemail(I didn't like google voice with my unlocked nexus 6) or what other options do I have? I've been reading around and the unlocked version has wifi-calling built in correct? Sorry for so many questions didn't know if I should start a new thread or not.

Unlocked AT&T SAMSUNG GALAXY S7 EDGE no update after 1st March 2017 Security Patch
Hi. I have an Unlocked At&t S7 Edge which haven't received any update after the 1st March 2017 Security Patch Update. When I check for software updates it says the phone is on the latest version of Android. I live outside US so does it affect that. I haven't been able to update to Oreo. Please Help
The Software details of the Phone are as follows:
Model number: SM-G935A
Android Version: 7.0
Baseband Version: G935AUCS4BQC2
Kernel Version: 3.18.31-10280464 #1 Thu Mar 16 15:47:20 KST 2017
Build Number: NRD90M.G935AUCS4BQC2
Also can I somehow install the official Oreo update by Samsung using Samsumg Kies or something I really don't wanna get into Custom Roms or Recovery.
Any Help would pe Appreciated
You will never get OTA's on that firmware because you are outside the US (and not on an AT&T network). I don't know if you can get the firmware through SmartSwitch or not, as I converted my S7 Edge to the unlocked firmware ages ago.
Your best bet for updates the normal way is to convert your device to the US unlocked variant (935U) so that you get updates directly from Samsung. It's official firmware, but you will need an unofficial/patched version of Odin to load it. However, once you do, your phone will behave like an ordinary unlocked version in every way except the bootloader is still locked.

Thx a lot. I did it. Not without problems...:crying:
Test more than 5 different odin. Had boot loops ...:crying::crying:
Finally, I end up with the latest Oreo Firmware and now my phone is great and a lot faster. New phone! :highfive:
Ps The Odin that did it for me (the 20th time) was the patched (Odin3 v3.13.1_3B_PatcheD)
Unlocked Oreo on the S7 Edge is incredible. It's actually better now than when it shipped with Marshmallow. Compared to AT&T Marshmallow (nevermind Nougat), it really is like getting a new phone. Which is why I would suggest that anyone with a carrier branded device switch unless they can't live without the extra features, such as WiFi calling. It's just that much better.

The BETA is only available for N960U1 models. If you have the T-Mobile branded Note 9, then you have a N960U.
A way around that is to use ODIN to flash the N960U1 firmware. Then the beta should be available to you.
I currently have an ATT N960U, running the N960U1 firmware, on T-Mobile and I got the beta notification earlier today and signed up.
Even if you don't get into the beta program. You can still get the beta OTAs from firmware.science. You'll still need to ODIN the U1 firmware, of course.
My Samsung+ is white background and is not offering me the beta. Unlocked device bought straight from Samsung / Verizon SIM.
Edit: Install the beta Samsung+ apk from here https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/samsu...msung-11-2-3-0-android-apk-download/download/ and then it will offer it to you

No. This is NOT for U firmware. And it's not even for ARJ7. You need to use ODIN to flash the ARJ9 build for the U1. N960U1SQU1AEJ9. Then either sign up for the beta through the Samsung+ app, or download the update from firmware.science.
Also it doesn't matter if you're carrier locked or not. And yes U1 will work just fine with ATT, but you'll lose WiFo calling and VoLTE.

There's a whole thread full of feedback already.

I was able to get AT&T wifi calling and volte, messages sync, etc. working in my AT&T N960U on U1 firmware by simply flashing the ATT ARJ7 CSC. The only issue here is that you will lose software updates on the device, they will all need to be downloaded and flashed manually in recovery as an OTA update zip.

Like you said it breaks updates, and it would probably jack up the beta as well.
If I open Spotify (or Amazon music) and start playing music and then put the phone down, when I pick it up and try turning the screen back on it doesn't work, just restarts. Even if I don't press the power button and just turn it on with the lift to wake feature the same thing happens. The Iris scanner light turns on and off a few times like it's trying to work normally but doesn't actually. I sent in the system logs with the Samsung members app, any ideas how to fix it?*
I'm on the newest pie beta on the Unlocked us version.
Turning off lift to wake doesn't help.
What did they do Location options ?
In Oreo or prior one could use just the device GPS for location accuracy. I think that option is no longer available? It appears to be just either On or Off. Nothing in between.

Still didn't offer it. I probably need to use Odin to flash the U1 first, right?

Hi,
I'm interested in the US unlocked U1 version, direct from Samsung Beta update.
Not interested in all the other rooted and/or country versions.
I got the beta downloaded but not installing till I hear from users first,
Thanks again,
Ken

The 160+ page thread called "Note 9 Pie Alpha/Beta."
If you want the U1 firmware beta straight from Samsung, then you need to be on ARJ9 for the U1. Then sign up for the beta through the Samsung+ app.

Of course you do. You have to be on ARJ9 for the U1 before you can get the beta. It's only for U.
For your convenience, this is the official OTA update for the U.S. Snapdragon SM-N960U. If you can't wait for the Official Android 9 Pie OTA to hit your device/carrier then this is what you're looking for. It is universal for all U.S. carriers as Samsung has streamlined their Galaxy firmware across the U.S. carriers/variant. The only difference in the new firmware is the CSC relevant to each specific carrier. Your carrier SIM will determine which network configs and factory installed carrier apps will be preinstalled on first boot.
This specific OTA update .zip REQUIRES that your phone be on the latest Oreo firmware N960USQU1ARL1
If you're not already running the latest carrier firmware Oreo 8.1 (N960USQU1ARL1) just check software update in settings and let it update to N960USQU1ARL1. You can also download it from HERE and flash it via Odin. I strongly recommend a factory data reset BEFORE you Odin firmware for best results.
***Note this is the carrier firmware. If you want the non-carrier "bloat-free" firmware this is NOT it***
If you need more detailed install instructions visit this helpful thread.
Please thank the guys over at https://firmware.science/ for providing these EARLY releases as they are the ones making this possible.

Just odin back to ARL1 without wiping and then flash the update file before rebooting into the OS. That's what I did and everything is working fine but I am sure I will wipe over the weekend when I have more time.

I got the same error, It seems this update works on U models, but not U1
Device: crownqltesq
Model: samsung SM-N960U
Device: crownqlteue
Model: samsung SM-N960U1
Loving the update so far, however i noticed that the edge lighting effect no longer works with Samsung Music Player...

Correct. This is the U.S. carrier firmware, not the Unlocked non-carrier firmware. I thought I made this clear in the OP.

Samsung removed this feature for some reason. I liked this feature too. Samsung seems to have taken a few steps backwards with the release of One UI.

Yeh thats what I ended up doing. Worked fine, albeit I'm not a fan of the verizon bloatware. Oh well I'll probably roll back to a vanilla install later.
Dumb question but this should be good to go on att right?

AT&T already has an OTA for this. Why go to all the extra effort?
Is there any update our for U1...I am currently on the latest version of the beta for PIE. Just curious, as all these firmware and models are making me a bit confused lol.

Is this for US Tmobile as well?
Thanks for posting this! Tired if waiting on Verizon. so far so good.
Only question I have is how do you open the recent apps from the home screen when you have the navbar hidden and are using gestures. Also swipe up for Samsung pay is enabled.
Never mind figured it out lol. Just can't swipe up to bring up Google assistant. Might have to disable Samsung pay swipe up feature to unlock that area.
Flashed on stock Sprint note9 from sdcard and working great!!
I'm on a spectrum device the 960U and was just wondering you guys who did update how are you liking it? And if anybody is using the BX actions It's a Bixby button remapper and if you had to uninstall it 1st or anything I'm just dumb not updating until I'm sure!
Thanks

Mobile Odin no hiccups?
Nope, just moved to SD, booted into recovery and update from SD. No Odin required since it's an official update
