[FIX] Backup Stuck at "Waiting to back up..." - Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

Whenever I setup Android for the first time, or setup again after resetting my phone, I'm always faced with the same problem. I'm unable to manually perform a backup to Google Drive. The normally blue "Back up now" button is grayed out, and in place of the date and time of the last backup is a message saying, "Waiting to back up..." This message never goes away, even after waiting for days, and a backup never takes place.
I tried every solution I found in my Google searches, but nothing worked except the solution I'm sharing, and it requires ADB (Android Debug Bridge).
How to setup and use ADB (Android Debug Bridge)
Once you have an ADB connection to your phone, enter the following commands exactly as displayed:
Code:
[SIZE="4"]adb -d shell
bmgr enabled
bmgr list transports
bmgr backupnow --all[/SIZE]
This should trigger your first Google Drive backup which you should allow to complete. Once the backup completes, reboot your phone, and return to the Backup screen. The "Back up now" button should now be blue and enabled, allowing you to manually backup to Google Drive at will. Additionally, Android's automatic daily backups should now work normally as well.

I removed my screen lock and I could back up already.

Hi Gtasaryder. Yes, I tried this hack too and it worked, but it cannot be a permanent solution because it sacrifices one form of security for another, and this is not viable. Imagine having to leave you phone unlocked just so you can backup. It is like having to open your doors if you want to close your windows to keep thieves out. It's not a practical solution.

thanks for sharing, the only solution keeps working for me!!

Same, and I'm able to Google Backup now... when I turn screen locks back on though won't future Backups be restricted?
This is a Xiaomi bug, surely?

Nexus one Lock pattern

The nexus one failed to unlock, and locked me out permanently. I used ADB shell to defeat it. Now although my phone is no longer locked. when I check my security setting. Every thing on it is still hightlighted as if it has a set pattern. Is there a way to reset it? I'm afraid to use the change pattern setting, since I don't remember the pattern anymore. Please Help. Thanks.
Try backing everything up and resetting all your settings. May I ask what adb shell command you used for this?
EDIT: If it was a pattern lock why didn't you just use your google account to reset it? This completely disables it.
I used this. The reason I didn't use google account reset is because of the bug that invalid all attempt to reset using google account.
How do I reset my setting?
> ./adb shell
# sqlite3 data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
sqlite> update system set value=0 where name='lock_pattern_autolock';
sqlite> update system set value=0 where name='lockscreen.lockedoutpermanently';
sqlite> .exit
# exit
is there an update to this by chance? Note you CANNOT use your google login credentials to reset a lock pattern - the bug still exists.
I was able to get out of the lock screen via mobile defense but I want to go back in and get rid of it completely and reset it - any idea how?
thx

That 5 tries bug is no longer there. I successfully unlocked the phone with my credentials a few weeks ago.
Its definitely still there - like I said I had this problem today and it wouldn't accept my credentials.

also, "null" does not work.

You're rooted, right?
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question... but can't you shut the phone off, boot into recovery, wipe, then flash the ROM again?

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Don't be so quick to say that the "bug" is "definitely still there."
I literally just locked myself out, used my gmail username and password, and it had me immediately draw a new pattern. So there's no such bug on my device..
the bug was on 2.1 and fixed with 2.2.

That is great stuff - now did you list your ROM? I'm still on 2.1 like I said, and I *just* had this problem a day or two ago, so for some of us, the problem still exists. I didn't say anywhere it exists on 2.2 or that it exists for everyone now did I? Reading comprehension, its good stuff .
A quick look on the google bug reports would also note that this bug still exists for a great many number of users.
The bug was fixed in 2.2, and the assumption is that you should already be running 2.2 by now, since it has a ton of advantages and not one disadvantage over 2.1. Nobody's going to bother fixing the bug for the old version of OS, slowly being phased out.
Man when did xda get so uppity?
I am not going to run 2.2 yet - CM isn't out yet other than RC and I do not run stock. There are plenty of people who do this. If you're not one of them, don't worry about it and leave the question alone. If you are, and you figured out how to bypass, then please let us know. There are plenty of reasons to be running 2.1 CM/custom ROM over 2.2 stock.
Jack I hope you're on the latest Droid btw, I mean with your line of thinking you should have it right? Why are you in the N1 forum?

Whose being uppity? The bug is part of 2.1, the bug was fixed and implemented in 2.2.
Bug prevents you from unlocking phone, the solution is factory reset, or update to 2.2.
So....

To be honest I wouldn’t even assume that it was definitely fixed in 2.2. It was inconsistent on 2.1. I actually pointed it out on the general board when I first got my Nexus One (not long after it was released) and I got the “uppity brigade” replying and telling me I was wrong and there was no bug because they couldn’t reproduce it.
Out of interest - has anyone got proof it was fixed in 2.2? Aside from the fact it doesn’t happen on your specific phone (which you know… congrats, but anecdotal evidence is useless). I assume its in a android changelog or similar?
bpm2000 – wish I had an answer but I ended up wiping my phone in the end. Didn’t even know about the ADB method back then. Sorry can’t be of more help. Its an incredibly annoying bug and one that was known about and should have been fixed long before the Nexus and 2.1 came out.
That is frustrating to hear BDH, I tried the adb stuff when it happened looking through the google support boards but I always got stuck on the:
sqlite>
portion and it would never register the commands for some reason. I was lucky that I had set up remote lock/unlock with mobile defense or else I would have had to wipe as well.
Thanks for the relevant reply.

Problems with new Droid Turbo in UK - help needed please

Hi
Newbie here
I bought a new 'unlocked' Droid Turbo from a Chinese ebay seller with good feedback.
When I set it up it seemed ok, and picked up a 3G signal on my UK carrier network (no 4G LTE here).
The signal seemed weaker than my existing (old) device, so I went into settings and tried a few changes (from Global to the other options etc)
The signal didn't seem to improve, so after a bit of Googling I downloaded an app called Network and tried a few setting changes,
Anyway, you guessed it I can't get a signal at all now, even after a factory reset
Can anyone offer me any simple help as to what I should do?
Is it useless now?
Thanks in advance

If that app made any changes to the system partition (the OS, basically), a factory reset will not fix it. If you want to get the stock, unmodified software back on it, you can try following section 0, steps 4-13 of this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/general/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-install-t3292684.

Yes. If you want to make the process even more automated, you could install the Verizon Upgrade Assistant (that annoying popup you get every time you plug your phone into a computer) and select the "repair" option. That will do the same thing as this.

I tried to install the upgrade assistant, and it seemed to install ok, but there's no icon on the desktop or anything under apps (windows 10)
It does appear in the uninstall programs page in settings though.
I then tried the first method, but couldn't extract directly to the folder (error message came up) so I extracted to a folder on the desktop then dragged the contents into the correct folder and double clicked the batch file.
The phone is now showing the battery level, and the command box on the laptop screen is showing 'waiting for device'
Am I on the right tracks, or am I making newbie errors and I should get back in my lane?
Following the steps (as you suggested) has worked perfectly - thanks again.
I appreciate the ultra quick help from across the pond

Delete (or rename) the following files inside /data/system (note that probably not all of them exist for you, simply delete those you can find):
password.key
pattern.key
basically any .key file in that folder
Using TWRP file manager (its under advanced)
Thanks man. Problem is, I could only see my device on PC if phone was started via twrp. If not, device shows on PC when plugged in but won't show any files.
I have booted phone into recovery, seems that it will let me do that. Is that any help?. Mrs has just come back from work.... Gulp!

Hmm. Not going so well now. I'm doing the following:
Security> screen lock. 'Confirm pin'. I enter a pin, then either a) press 'OK'... Screen goes back to 'security & fingerprint' screen. Shows 'screenlock none'. Or, if I try to previous then press forward arrow on keypad (rather than pressing OK), it goes to blank screen with left facing arrow at top of screen saying 'choose screen lock'?.
I've also noticed that in security & screenlock screen, it shows 'finger 1' under fingerprint list. Like it still has a fingerprint saved.

Yeah the fingerprint will be saved, i cant remember exactly how i did it (i'm not doing it on my phone as my bank already hate me for being rooted and registering android pay like 20 times a month) - if i remember i enter a pin, then choose either pin again or none, and after none go back to pin. I think that worked, but don't hold me to it - it's easy to recover i just dont have a device in that state to try. I could teamviewer your phone if you want me to and sort it haha. Just have a mess around to see what happens, one combination of that should work. Basically android still thinks you have a pin, but it's physically not there.

Problem after updating device

Hey,
Today I have an unusual request. At the Sister on the phone after the update asks for a pattern and despite entering the correct pattern it is not possible to unlock the phone, unfortunately the fingerprint for huawei after restart will not unlock the phone. Unfortunately, there is only one copy of her child's pictures on the phone and I don't think I need to know how important they are, I ask you for help. What can I do to get at least to the pictures in the internal memory. I read about adb but unfortunately the phone has no SD card slot so there is nowhere to put it in, I downloaded some Google programs that either do not support this model or are paid $ 60. All the time we try to enter familiar patterns every hour but after 3 attempts he locks the phone. The phone has an original system, no root, no modifications and USB debugging is turned off (as is standard in the system, because it was not needed by the sister).

Android is an open system so I believe there is a solution, thank you in advance! Greetings!

Isn't it great to see Android security in action. Send the phone to Huawei for unlocking. Proof of purchase will be required unfortunately.
I can do it here: consumer.huawei.com/pl/support/postal-repair

Proof of purchase will not be a problem.

This is exactly how it should work tbh. There is no reason for the fingerprint and pattern unlock to change after a simple update. Either more is going on, or you are extremely unlucky. If Huawei can not keep your data, maybe you are best to get them to reset and start using backups for your family member from here on.
Edit: I know that is a bad answer in your situation. However, it should not be a simple process to bypass security on any Android phone.
There is no possibility to use other way of unlocking (password or something else than pattern)?
Try doing an 'emergency backup' in eRecovery.

There is unfortunately no other option, otherwise a fingerprint would unlock the device.
How to make such a copy? After making such a copy will I have access to data? Can you expand the topic?

G900A Galaxy S5 Android 6.0 Odin Update Files - Without Wiping!

Using Odin files to update a Samsung AT&T model will almost always result in a factory reset being performed, and I've also seen the same thing happen when trying to update via OTA zip in Recovery. I'm providing this package for anyone still using the S5, to be able to update software without needing to do a factory reset. I have personally verified that these files will perform the update without wiping any data. These files will update you to the Build/Baseband ending in QD1, Android 6.0.
My zips are compressed extra small for space and bandwidth savings. The default Windows extractor can't handle it, so you'll need a 3rd party tool like 7zip, WinRAR, etc.
Happy flashing!

Worked great..Thanks! But....
You are theman for this! I have a 900A AT&T and have struggled for days to get it unlocked, upgraded and working without tripping the secure software alert. I started with a 4.X maintenance OS, then rooted, SafeStrapped then pushed this update via ODIN and it worked. Now, the only issue i am having is apps crashing continuously. Started with google play and play services now spreading. I ASSUME this is due to apps not getting updated in the update to 6.X. Correct me if I am wrong. I have updated those via APKs along with others to new versions yet it still happens. Now its also Chrome, File manager etc. Is this maybe a code bug, or am I missing something here? Thanks again

No idea. Can't really diagnose app crashes - too many possibilities.
Also: hopefully you're now aware that you're not rooted any longer and (probably) can't ever root it again

Yeah I saw that, but thats ok. My biggest objective is to get it unlocked from AT&T so I can use it (this whole venture has just turned into a learning/fun toy to play with now) on my carrier. That is yet TBD. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks in advance for any help, short version at top, details below.
-- Short version:
Please help me recover my data, and phone if possible.
I need the data, esp texts and notes, for both personal (some family members have passed on) and business.
I have a new Galaxy S21 and / or PC Smart Switch ready to receive data backup if we can evacuate it from the S5.
ODIN flash seems to pass but has 'Resizing Data' fail, and phone still won't boot past AT&T logo screen.
All web searches seem to say Factory Reset is my last option, but I don't want to lose the data.
Please share ANY advice on how I can recover the data.
-- More details:
Phone = SM-G900A Samsung Galaxy S5 AT&T
Use = pristine, never rooted, modded, or unfortunately backed up
Status = will not boot, passes screen 1 'Galaxy S5', screen 2 'Samsung script', then stops on screen 3 'AT&T globe logo'
More details = Used clean for ~7 years, then on day x, saw phone automatically complete a system update (green screen, sprockets, "your phone is updating"), which was surprising as it's years after it is no longer supported by AT&T. After that update, I continued to use the phone that day, but it then rebooted automatically and stuck on the AT&T globe logo.
Attempts to fix = soft reset, battery pull, can't get into SAFE MODE, can get into and out of recovery mode, found this firmware (THANKS @iBowToAndroid), used multiple ODIN (Odin3 v3.13.3_3B_PatcheD, Odin3 v3.14.1_3B_PatcheD) to flash it (my first Android flashing experience). On flashing process, ODIN on PC shows 'PASS' and log shows "<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)", but phone shows 'Resizing Data' failed:
"

Trying the "wipe cache partition" is the only thing I can think of

THANKS for the quick reply, very much appreciate your help.
Am I really left with only a Factory Reset and then trying to use Data Recovery software to get ‘some’ data back?
I really don't want to give up on the data, so I'm still trying anything I can think of in research and repeated attempts.
More details:
I have tried the recovery mode 'Wipe cache partition' option before and after using ODIN.
I've tried doing it 'twice' per recommendation of some of the web advice I've read in trying to research this.
I've noticed that sometimes the colored highlight of the 'Reboot to bootloader' option then turns background green instead of usual blue, but I don't know why, or if that matters.
Still, the ODIN flash effort always returns the permission error, and the boot always sticks on the AT&T logo.
The string seems to indicate a 'user data' permission error?
Is there any way to debug the logic of the firmware or slog through the 'Recovery Logs' to determine and resolve the cause of the permission error?
When the problem began, I had an SD card and SIM card loaded.
I've since removed both in trying to address this, also per 'web advice'.
Any chance putting them back in helps somehow?
Any other options available via apply update from SD card or ADB?
Any way to setup the Android OS as a secondary drive to another machine to pull data out that way?
I've done similar things with Windows OS in PC environment, but I'm not seeing anyone trying that with Android.
If I am really stuck with factory reset, are there any data recovery programs I could try afterward that work with the G900A?
So far I've looked at Dr Fone, Tenorshare, EaseUS, FonePaw, and D-Back, and none seem to work with the AT&T model variant.
Maybe that's just because they don't have access to AT&T firmware available to install, but if I clear the stuck boot via FR, they then might be able to get some of my data back via drive scan - whatever data is not truly overwritten by the FR?

I own and run a business that performs SIM unlocking and other software-related services for mobile devices, so we see situations like yours quite a bit. And I don't know of anything else that you can do. From reports, we've heard that none of those "recovery services" actually work to recover any data, after a reset

Disappointing to hear bad news, but appreciate your effort and insight in providing it, thanks.
I've learned alot in researching it.
I just wish I'd known it before the problem, which I'm sure you also hear quite a bit.
Please let me know if you think of anything else I can try.

You can never trust a mobile device 100%, especially not one that's 7 years old. That's why anything that's that important needs to be backed up at all times

Totally agree, and totally on me for not having a backup.
I was just foolish enough to not know yet how easy it is to back up.
Give me 10 minutes of life again now in this phone, I use Smart Switch to backup, and I'm off to a new phone, or even FR on this one and reload.
Now where did I put my Delorean...

Have you ever tried a 'combination key' approach to get data access?
As in...
Smart Switch on PC won't connect, but ODIN does show 'Added'.
I don't understand the granular details, but hoping you might...
Could we use both Smart Switch and ODIN in some combination sequence that would allow Smart Switch to pull the data off to a Smart Switch PC backup that I could then throw onto a new phone?
When it's in Downloading (firmware flashing) mode, a modem port is used. The modem port is also there when the device is booted up in Normal mode, but that's not useful for extracting any data off of it. I don't know what Smart Switch uses, but I would assume File Transfer (MTP) and/or ADB. And those aren't fully functional until the device fully boots up.
Do you have a screen lock on the device?

No lock on device, just swipe to go from 'lock screen' to home screen, prior to this boot problem obv.
One of the data recovery sw that I tried (EaseUS I think) did reach a screen asking me to enable USB debugging to continue, but I don't think I can do that without booting up.
I 'think' I remember that screen saying something like 'MTP device' connected, when it asked me to do that.
Any way to sneak into MTP mode from that?

Any 3rd party software will require ADB to be enabled. Smart Switch is the only one that *might* work just over MTP, but I'm pretty sure MTP doesn't fully load until the device is booted. Even if it did, you would likely need to allow on the popup message. Does the phone show up as a device/drive when it's plugged in while sitting on the AT&T logo?
I think you're asking "does the phone show up as a device/drive" in something like a windows file explorer, and the answer is unfortunately no, or at least not that I've found yet - I've tried several times now, and I'm still trying any combinations I can.
For now...
I can get EaseUS to show 'MTP USB device' per the pic attached in my last, but can't really get it to connect past that point, as it asks for USB Debugging, which it appears I can't do due to stuck in boot loop.
Smart Switch seems to try to connect for awhile, then says it failed to connect, so I think I'm then left with 'Samsung Smart Switch Emergency Software Recovery' (PFA).
Do you have experience using it?
Do you know if it could work to reload the firmware / OS without wiping the data?
AT&T Advanced Technical Support guy says it gives you an option to choose whether or not using it resets the phone (wipes your data), so he thinks (hopes) that would work, but he didn't sound certain at all.
I understand your point on the pop up message user prompt for File Transfer Mode. I used that mode many times in the past, so I'm hoping it might default on the phone so we wouldn't need to answer the pop up prompt to reach that status , but I'm obv not sure about that.
Per the speculation in my last, do you know of any combination approach we might use to get the desired result, like maybe... use ADB somehow to change 1 parm value to reach MTP mode, then use that progress step to enable Smart Switch to connect so we could offload the data?
Thanks again for your help
1. MTP is the same as File Transfer. So when the phone is turning on, it starts loading that connection. You might see "MTP USB Device" or something similar in your Windows Device Manager
2. But if the phone never shows up as a device/drive (would show up under "Portable Devices" in Windows Dev Man), then it's not loading fully - and it normally doesn't do that until it boots past the carrier splash screen.
3. Even if it did boot fully and showed up as a device/drive, the MTP pop-up prompt shows up every single time you connect the device. There's no way around that. So the device would show as empty, with no files or folders, until you tapped "Allow" on the popup.
4. No, there's nothing else you can do to turn on any other connection modes

Device Manager does show an entry for the phone connected via USB cable:
Under 'Disk Drives' as
SAMSUNG MZMTE256HMHP-000MV
Under 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' as
SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device
Please tell me that helps us somehow?
