So i recently switched from sprinit to verizon and at the sametime updated my phone with the new system update. Since then my gps randomly stops keeping track of my location in a trip. I downloaded a gps tool from the app store and when it happens i use the app to reset my gps and it works. But then later if I use google maps again it randomly gives me the same issue. Its a easy enough fix but its annoying to have to keep doing that.
Was hoping there was some kind of fix or am I just unlucky and the gps is starting to go out.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Ya it was set to global. Hopefully it fixes it. Will test it out later when i need to leave work.
Having the same issue. I believe it started occurring after software update: N950USQU7DSL5 which was pushed out early February for me.

Ya I switched over from global to lte/cmda like chefji suggested and it helped were its not occuring as much but I still have the issue. Hopefully it gets fixed. If not i may have to try to revert back to an older update.
I just saw this thread after posting my questio above. Same issue and I'm on Verizon too. Mine has always been a Verizon phone. I dont recall exactly when the problem started but definitely within last 2 months. Never had issues before. For me, the workaround seems to be to use an app called GPS Fix/Optimizer and on the home page of that app, click on the button that says System off on bottom left and turn it to System on. I hate having to do these extra steps and never had a problem with any other Android phone doing this.
Try wiping the Cache Partition. If that doesn't help, backup your device and perform a Hard Factory reset.

Wipe cache partition but there is no reason to do a hard factory reset. This is a GPS problem and not a software issue. It is not isolated to Note 8 phones but seems to affect S9, S9+, Note 9, Note 10, and possibly a few others. It also started early Feb after Note 8's received a security update and the others received the Android 10 update. Samsung, Google, and especially Verizon are all pointing fingers at each other for blame instead of working together to try and come up with a fix. One thing I have found is that unlike the countless Android phones I have had in the past, there is absolutely no way to control the GPS. There no longer is an on/off switch. The best available choice is to search deep in settings to find Location but the only thing it controls is on/off switches for Wifi Scanning or bluetooth scanning. Turning both of those on now is considered High Accuracy. The only thing that has worked for me is using an app called GPS Fix/Optimizer in conjunction with an app called GPS Status. By using both of those apps before using Waze or Google maps, allows me to successfully navigate and it can find my exact position. I have also discovered that besides Waze and G Maps, many are reporting the same kind of problem with other location based apps such as Uber and Lyft. This needs to be fixed and I could care less which company is at fault but one of them needs to step up or all need to come together and figure out the problem...

Hello, I am having the same problem. I have a Galaxy Note 8 from AT&T, this problem started end of February, workaround is to switch the location OFF and then back ON but is annoying. I reset network, clear cache and nothing fixed the problem so I thought was a problem in the phone itself so I submitted a claim to Asurion, got the brand new replacement phone and the following day exact same problem appeared.
Now reading this thread I am fully convinced that is a bug. I hope it gets solved ASAP.
I posted about this on another thread and what I have stumbled on:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=82337821&postcount=18
I have seemed to narrow it down to it only happening when I connect my Note 8 to my 2016 Chevy Silverado and use Waze or Google maps on my radio via Android Auto. I made a few changes that I mentioned in the above thread to the battery settings for a couple apps. Because of the VID, I haven't been driving as much so I haven't done a lot of testing but this has seemed to help.
Well I thought it was fixed but it doesnt seem to be and it really seems to be an Android Auto glitch. Just yesterday, I had to run a couple errands and had phone plugged in for Android Auto. First couple trips, it worked just fine. Then one more trip, all I saw was the floating blue dot in Waze. While still plugged in to my Chevy, I went to GPS Fix and clicked to turn system on. I then went to GPS Status and it couldnt get a location fix. In GPS Status, I also selected Manage A-GPS State. First I tried reset and no fix. Then I did download and again, no fix. I gave it a little bit of time to see if it would work but it didnt. So next I unplugged my phone from my Chevy and again checked in GPS Status and no fix. I again went into Manage A-GPS State, reset, no fix, then download, and it fixed on my location right away. So for me, this is really pointing to an Android Auto issue. Hopefully a fix will come along soon...
Just to add, Waze had already been started once I fired up the Android Auto on the My Link Chevy radio as I had started a route. Waze was still running in the background when I disconnected from my Chevy radio so that kind of eliminates Waze as the problem, at least for me. Especially when GPS Status couldnt get a fix while I still had Android Auto running on my Chevy but as soon as I disconnected and ran through the GPS Status reset and download, I had a fix and Waze worked fine again.
Has this been resolved yet? Any fixes found?
Not completely resolved yet but the annoying workaround gets it working again. It should just work on it's own without all the extra steps. And I was able to get semi confirmation after creating a thread in the Google Support sub forum for Android Auto. I am being told that when plugging in the phone to use Android Auto that Android Auto attempts to also connect to the gps in my Chevy. It's kind of confusing and dont quite understand exactly what is happening. My vehicle does not have a dedicated gps system but I am being told that there could be some kind of GPS in the vehicle anyway and that could be causing the problem. I call BS on this info but I also didnt have any part of creating Android Auto. If this is what is happening, it pretty much says that Android Auto is probably the cause of the issue. I dont need military precision on my gps location and my phone inside my house will give me an accuracy of around 10 feet. No reason to be more accurate than that and this shouldn't even be a part of the Android Auto app.
https://support.google.com/androidauto/thread/45792804?hl=en
I posted this in the other thread but I'll add it here for completeness. I'm having the same issue on an unbranded note 8. But I'm not using android auto. I can use gps tools and it holds a lock fine. But if additional programs are launched, waze, maps, jbv1 I lose lock.
My Note 8 has the problem, I am not using WAZE, I am using The FitBit App with my VERSA 2, My Husband has the Note 9 and is using the FitBit App with his VERSA 2. His resulting miles walked and my resulting miles walked should be almost identical. They are not. I am consistently showing less miles than he does. When looking at the exercise map, generated by the GPS data, His walk path follows the streets we walked accurately, while mine cuts the corners, has me walking in drunken path across the properties located near the road and in some instances cutting across non walkable terrain. Giving me less mileage than my husband. Thankfully, my steps are accurately accounted for. I want this problem fixed. I don't like being cheated of my exercise miles.
Any update here? Note8 on Verizon. Having the same problem with Endomondo (fitness app) and Google Maps. Hard reset phone, and it's still problematic. For me, it might start out working fine, then midway thru a run it will stop. Usually resetting the app will make it work again.
I use T-mobile, and I tried just about everything and almost gave up. Today I was thinking that mayve its the wifi and bluetooth settings helping the GPS so I went to location and turned off the wifi and bluetooth improve accuracy settings and problem is fixed for me! So much headache gone. I was about to buy a new phone.

I just tried this and it failed location fix right away after opening Waze in Android Auto on my Chevy. So still searching for a real fix...
Well it looks like the Android Auto developers are starting to listen. After creating a thread on their google community page months ago, and numerous others posting same issue, they said they were going to reach out to several posters by email with directions on creating a bug report to forward to them. They claim they have been unable to recreate the problem and wanted bug reports from several having the problem so they could take a look. I had another failure today on a trip so I created a bug file and forwarded it. We shall see what they find...

I don't reboot my phone all that often. I've never seen it lose ALL data connection capability tho...
A regular power cycle doesn't hurt tho...
Can this be the issue?
I'm experiencing the same thing, but mainly when I'm connected to 3G. My phone shows it has full bars and 3G or 4G availability but I find 60% of the time my phone has little to no data going to my phone, so none of my apps or news feeds get updated or they get updated slowly. When I'm on wifi the phone works flawlessly.
I read this article,
http://pocketnow.com/windows-phone/hack-fixes-mms-on-unlocked-samsung-wp7-handsets
One of the odder quirks of Windows Phone 7 to appear since the platform's launch has been the absence of Automatic Data Configuration for users who swap SIM chips and network-hop with their unlocked handsets.
ADC should let the phone communicate with the network it's connected to in order to retrieve all the settings it needs in order to use the network's services. Samsung defended disabling ADC by saying that its phones are intended to only be used with a specific carrier
Now I know this is talking about MMS, but does anyone think it's related to 3G connectivity from a different service provider?
i am having the same problem, it started 2 days ago after i unlocked my phone, at&t gave me the unlock code, i had to enable hot spot & de brand by loading a file, i don't have problem with WiFi just 4G, it will be fixed if i re start the phone.
problem for me with wifi+3G
Not sure if this is the same as the OP. I run with both WiFi and 3G enabled most of the time. Basically everything will be working fine for a while, then I'll try to open a web page from Twitter and it will time out. Sometimes retrying will work, but it will take an abnormally long time to load the page. Other times it never works, and when I go to another app (e.g. mail) and try to sync, and that will also time out. When that happens I usually turn off either WiFi or 3G, then toggle the state of the one I left on (e.g. turn 3G off, then back on), and it clears up. I've never needed to reboot the phone. I don't have ICS enabled, but my phone is fully unlocked.
I've guessed this problem was caused by a lost or bad connection on one of the wireless protocols (like WiFi), where the phone thinks it is connected to WiFi and won't switch over to the other protocol (3G).
One more thing: I'm running 8107 and I don't remember this issue occurring before the upgrade.

I have the EXACT same issue as you state here. The problem has existed since day one with this phone. I updated through to 8107 and the issues still exist.
So now for some interesting/good news... my dad works for a large company that has direct access to AT&T Wireless Engineers, so he got in contact with an an engineer and explained this issue as both him and I experience the same issues. The engineer was able to get a hold of a Samsung Focus S and experienced the same problems for himself. He then escalated the issue directly to Samsung who in-turn escalated this to Microsoft. Apparently Microsoft claimed the issue was theirs and they are now working on an update to rectify the problem. Samsung also apparently has some updates that they were going to push but have since held off on pushing them until Microsoft has the fix for this data issue fixed.
I've been so frustrated by these issues and the lack of information regarding them that I thought you might be interested in knowing that Samsung, Microsoft, and AT&T ARE working to get the problem resolved.
Wow! This is really great news as I am having the exact same problem. I usually just on and back off Airplane mode and that fixes it, but its a real hassle. So, the word is that Samsung is, possibly, combining all the current issues like this data, the extra settings/quirky display, and the 8107/disappearing keyboard all in to one?
matt
The AT&T engineer didn't say what was going to be included in the Samsung update, just that Samsung was holding off on releasing the update until after Microsoft supplied a fix for the data issues. Hopefully Samsung's update fixes all of the Focus S quirks (data issues, delayed keyboard sounds, quirky display/auto brightness) in one shot.
Thanks for posting this, i feel better that Microsoft & Samsung are working on fixing this issue.
Any updates/news about this specific issue? I have the exact issue with my Focus S since I got my phone
I too have been having this issue and still haven't found a solution. I hope Samsung and Microsoft come up with a solution soon because it is very irritating.

Am I mistaken...but the majority of people posting in this thread, have the problem after installing something non standard?
8107 is not released by Samsung/AT&T, so the possibility that an associated file is not included, does exist.
Was the hotspot patch and official release, or was it intended for sideload or something?
I'm just curious. I had the luxary to have my Dell Venue Pro sent to Microsoft and examined by the Test and OEM team for WP. This was several months ago. They were able to determine I had used the force update trick to update my Device. From pieces of various emails, I was able determine the update included multiple files. The multiple files consisted of Device specific instructions and additional files needed for the that operator, in addition to the Update provided by MS.
If this is the case, forcing an update into place may indeed load the update, but it might not include other needed files.
Now, I'm not an expert, a dev or anything else important. I cannot validate that what I said is true. But, i do have the benefit of having my older device looked at by MS several months ago. This does not prove 2+2=4. But it does raise enough doubt in my mind that I won't be foruce updating my devices until alot more people get a look at this methodology and perhaps come up with some answers, or at least explanations.
Does the internet connection issue appear only after the forced 8107 update?
I had been using a Chevron-unlocked Samsung Focus S on the 7720 and had experienced no issues. Just updated to 8107 following Heathcliff74's method so I hope this issue doesn't start to plague me.
Also, has anyone had success with voluptuary's wifi internet connection sharing and interop-unlock method? I am hesitant to apply that hack exactly because of worries about issues with internet...
I'm a big chicken. I am just going to wait for AT&T to release the update. I just have this funny feeling that there's a little something extra included with the at&t update. I've done plenty of customizing over the years, but just have a feeling about this. I do wish they would step on it, though.

when I said extra, I meant a focus s specific file that might act as a customization or configuration file. I don't think a block file of any sort might be included. But I do know that at&t is proprietary enough to want a unique identifier of some sort. In Gen 1, at&t had special builds just for them, turning on or off features. I know the hd7 had a specific 'config' type file, as did the venue pro. Would I call these extra files? No. I would call them required files. Build 8107 was a single build for WP. Do you think that all phones with mango had the same needs, samex files, same configs? Or is it possible that a related file acted as a config or control.
I'm not smart enough to know for sure. My gut says...maybe. .

Hey dudes, recently I've been having a problem with my note 5 where google maps/gps just doesn't work unless I reboot my phone. I'll put in the address and my location will be detected, but once I start driving the location doesn't move, it's as if the app is frozen, but it isn't. Rebooting and reopening the app makes it work which makes me think it must be software rather than hardware? I have factory reset the phone, but the problem persists. Any ideas for a solution?
GPS Toolbox app, use it, if it doesn't work try a different navigate app, like waze.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
I'm having the same problem. GPS seems to know generally where I am, but not enough to guide me through the navigation. If I ask Maps to tell me where I am right now (stationary, at home), it locates me two blocks away. If I ask Maps to navigate me while I'm on the road, it finds me a route from where it thinks I am, but is unable to update my location once I start moving. My location seems to jump around a lot during navigation and it shows me driving in the middle of the block two blocks away.
I've been trying to find an answer to this online but can't find anything helpful - my location services are on, power saving mode is off, locating method is GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile networks. I've tried turning location off and back on, I've tried restarting the phone. Nothing works. The problems started when I woke up (e.g. didn't change the settings and suddenly it went wrong) and the phone didn't drop or anything.
GPS toolbox did nothing for me. Waze is having the same problem. I even downloaded Mapquest, thinking that Waze was using Google tech and that was the issue, and Mapquest is having the same problem. This is so frustrating - any ideas?
I have the same issue with my Note 5. I have even had my handset replaced to fix this issue. But I'm stuck with the same problem. There is something seriously wrong with these devices and Samsung needs to own up to it. Considering how much these devices cost, you'd expect everything to work.
First things first, I'm extremely savvy in Android / cell info.
As the title says, anytime I load up something that uses GPS, it turns on the GPS, and cycles the cellular radio. I've tried QPST, factory image flashing, radio flashing, reset AGPS, downloaded new AGPS. Tried every GPS Tools app there is. Calibrated GPS.
If I disable GPS, and only use Data for location, it does not do this.
I've noticed that the APN table gets corrupted sometimes. Doing a reset to default restores all APNs, but adding the APN manually does not activate Data (even though the info is correct).
If I set the Preferred Network Type to LTE Only, and run GPS Status, it will eventually lock GPS location, and keep data active (after cycling the radio off and on), but then after a few minutes, it goes back to LTE, GSM, CDMA preferred, and I'm back at square one. Also, going into Cellular Networks (in Android Settings), and forcing 3G without LTE does the same. My best result seems to be leaving it on 3G in this menus, going into the *#*#INFO#*#*, and then setting it to LTE Only. But again, eventually it reverts, and/or if GPS is turned off at any point, then the cycle has to be started again. This only works for like 15 minutes at a time, so this is not reliable.
Due to this, I can't use any Maps, or even run Speedtests, since it tries to get your location first, and then do the test.
Obviously Pokemon Go is fudged up.
I have spent the last 3 days and nights fighting with my phone, flashing ****, modifying, restoring... I am so frustrated I have actually begun to fling and throw my phone around (very very harshly).
Failing this, I will break it in half, but I can't do that until I have my Note 7...
Please help. I know it sounds crazy, because GPS should not affect the data connection, let alone the ENTIRE cellular radio.
I'm thinking of wiping the EFS partition, but the only backup I have of EFS is from after this whole ordeal started.
IMEI is intact, I can see it with *#06#.
It is worth noting, this all started by Maps locking up (or I suppose the GPS getting messed up and crashing Maps). After I reboot the phone, GPS and Data still worked, but my location was stuck at the same spot, even though I had driven miles and miles away.
Trying to be as thorough as possible to try and get whatever help I can get. Would any debug logs help anyone at all? If so, which.
Thanks in advance!!
Best thing I can recommend, is get on Google Maps, put in somewhere to go... Let it lock GPS. Then go use your app. The problem is only with turning ON the gps... once it's on, and doesn't turn off, you are good to go. Can even play pokemon go. Obviously your batter will be **** but meh... 22000 mAH battery pack.

There's a thread in Q&A, but the short version is that it's a known issue affecting Nexus 6 almost exclusively on carriers worldwide. I haven't found any full workaround. Freezing Google Connectivity Services helps quite a bit, I got about 10 hours out of the data connection that way. But GPS eventually screws it up. Disabling location services is the best option for me right now, I need data more than location.
Google has acknowledged the issue, as has t-mobile. They claim to be working on it. No one knows how long that might take.

Think about how strange this legitimately is. All to a sudden, nexus 6 owners are having dropped data with GPS. Not just ones who've accepted an update, not just ones who have rooted and installed custom OS's, just those of us who own nexus 6s'. Its strange, but it makes me think that its a bug within one of their application, possibly connectivity services. I wonder if its all to a sudden appearing because they're editing code to get ready for android n

Nothing against you... I'm just flustered that I've spent countless hours trying to fix a problem that had nothing to do with me.
The legitimacy is real... But this was a hidden update pushed by Google. I initially thought it was me, then TMO. But its the phone/google/motorola. Just angry of all the time I've wasted.
Download GPS Locker, let it get a lock on. And just don't turn off GPS. The issue only happens when GPS is enabled/activated/awoken. Just leave it on 24/7 and that's all.

Because come to think about it that's when mine started lol. I'm thinking its a system app update issue that they were getting ready for android n.
And I completely understand your frustration, I think most of us have been in this situation one too many times, except normally its our own fault lol
Well i just came here to find out / ask if this problem is only for me and some how happy to see i'm not alone.
i have this problem aprox. 2 - 3 days. First i thought this was a rom problem
---------- Post added at 07:33 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:52 AM ----------
i might have found a solution;
i disabled modify system settings permission of google connectivity services and also i activated xposed mobile radio active fix. Now i still have gps at high accuracy ( says sometimes gps signal not found ) but still have working data and GPS at the same time.
I don't know if this could help but I had the same problem, it happened after I updated connectivity service couple days ago so I uninstalled the updates and after I did that it didn't happened again cellular radio and GPS are back to normal.
Sorry for the bad grammar
I, too have had this problem for 4 days now. I just changed location accuracy to battery saving mode (no GPS) and when I access the application that always killed LTE it remained on. I'm hoping this setting works long term (i.e., for more than a few hours).
I am having a similar issue since the last 3-4 days. My stock T-Mobile Nexus 6 (never rooted or flashed any custom ROM or anything ever) is losing data connection for long periods. It started 3-4 days ago when I, coincidentally or not, installed UBER for the very first time. I really don't know if its a GPS issue or some other hardware issue or Android OS issue. I did a Factory Reset today and it appeared to be fine at first BUT then again the issue started, this time without UBER but when I installed the STARBUCKS application. So again , I am not sure what the issue is. But my cellular radio is losing connectivity like anything.

I fixed this by uninstalling Google connection service updates. And then also going into the settings and granting location permission. Let's see how long it works for!
The updated connection services did not have an option for permissions.
This worldwide issue seems to be fixed now.

Did you find any news about it? What was causing the problem etc etc
Running the DP5 beta and somewhat affected like everyone else, but unlike some folks here I have never needed to reboot my phone. I lose all connection few times a day but it takes roughly 10-20 seconds and LTE comes back alive. Guess I'm lucky.
Not an official part of the beta...but I've been installing and using the betas via apkmirror. I use the Sony XAV-AX100 for android auto on it's latest firmware (1.02.06 as of this writing). Phone is a Nexus 6P running 7.1.2. Started with the v4.24.0.113 beta....it worked...albeit with frequent crashes/restarts. It seemed VERY beta. Sometimes it didn't audibly report hazards/police, etc. The "OK Google" style voice recognition worked fine in the app....e.g if I had Waze selected for Nav, a "Navigate to DESTINATION" responded with "OK, handing that to Waze..." and then the destination came up fine in Waze.
I tried this on a few long trips, but ultimately the frequent crashes (sometimes at critical navigation points) were too much, so I largely reverted back to Google Maps.
I am now on v4.26.0.902. It is overall MUCH more stable than the 113 beta, however, all of the OK Google voice recognition defaults to Google Maps...e.g. "Navigate to DESTINATION" switches you to Google Maps by default, even if you are in Waze when you do it...even when tapping the microphone in the waze search box. I really hope that isn't going to be the case in the release version of this when it comes out. It's kind of a deal breaker....you really need that ability to choose a new navigation destination on the fly with voice commands as you can do in GM.
Overall Feedback for both versions so far:
1. I miss the speed/speed limit overlay terribly. I know they are dealing with a screen real estate issue here...but I'd really like to see this added back in.
2. No ability to send ETA in the AA UX. Not really a deal breaker for me....I found this functionality spotty at best in the release versions of Waze.
3. The Map detail could be better. I know the head unit has lower resolution than my phone, but Google Maps looks much better on it.
4. I wish the dark theme/dark map would work on AA. If I switch the lights on, it goes to dark, but I'd like the ability to have this on all the time. The dark map seems to look better on the head unit's screen.
I'd be interested to hear the experiences of others so far.....
You know, I just don't understand the lack of talk in this forum about Waze Beta. I keep coming here and looking and this is really the only thing about it.
1. Speed limit overlay is coming back, they talked about it when the new version came out last week.
2. Agreed. It should prompt you via voice after you hit a Send ETA button on who you want to send it to.
3. Agreed. I am a Geographer/GIS Specialist by trade, so I know maps, this small of font on the screen when driving is unacceptable. The detail is also very poor.
4. You DO know you can set your Android Auto to always be Night Mode right? I prefer it that way.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68249351&postcount=7
Gives you the dark map all the time. Dark Google Play Music is better too.

I did not know that! Thanks for the tip!
I've got 905 installed now but the "Navigate to DESTINATION" via voice switching you to Google Maps by default issue persists, unfortunately. 113 didn't do that. I really hope they restore that so that it uses your last used navigation app, similar to how music works.

905? Is that a new version that is AA capable?
We should use this thread, or maybe start a new one to notify XDA folks that do stumble in here when there's a new AA compatible beta. I've had to find out on *shudder* Reddit.
Installed 4.27.0.0 Beta on Friday. http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/waze/waze-gps-maps-traffic-alerts-live-navigation/waze-gps-maps-traffic-alerts-live-navigation-4-27-0-0-release/
I can confirm this version works with AA. Seems very stable, they fixed the "Navigate to DESTINATION" issue as well. Still no Speedometer. It may be because I've switched to always on night mode, but the map seems to look a little better than it did. I think they still need work with the fonts, etc. but this looks promising.
How does waze download map? I use it in car without Internet.
Last time i used it, i send Internet from phone to find the destination. Then i stoped Internet and working fine.
Last time i was in a trip, i started waze again, without Internet and without settings an adress. It was working but after a few minutes it didn't have map anyone. It just showing black for map..
Probably if i started Internet again it would show map. The program was working. It did work navigation but without map..
So i think when you search an andress, it download the map to go there. So even without Internet it will work. But if you dont follow the navigation and go to some other place, it wont have the map from the other place..

The purpose of this thread is for discussion of the Waze Beta on Android Auto. Perhaps you should ask your question in the general Waze forum: https://www.waze.com/forum/ With a general google search, I found this relevent thread here: https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=657&t=67879#p682703
Installed 4.27.0.1 beta. Working fine with AA. I don't see any feature updates...seems to be a bug fix release.

Hey there. I am having trouble with android auto. I have the same head unit as you as well as the same phone. I have tried many times to get android auto running with my phone on the head unit and I always get a message about "android auto will resume when you are parked". The head unit does not give this message when connected to a samsung phone or an i-Phone (apple car play). This error only pops up with my device, Nexus 6P so I am assuming it was wired correctly by the installer. Can you PLEASE let me know what ROM you are on (including the build date) and possibly what cord you are using to connect to the provided USB extension cable? I have yet to get this head unit to work with my Nexus 6P and I have tried a different ROMs, settings, reboots etc. Please help.

I'm on the stock ROM....7.1.2 Build No: N2G470. The cord is just a generic USB-A to USB-C cord I bought at Fry's Electronics. FYI...I installed the head unit myself, and I think I may have had that issue initially. What I did to resolve it was ground the parking brake wire. This allows you to watch video on the head unit as well, if you have a USB stick with media on it (although I never do that).
Hope that helps....

Thanks skylaneffz. I am going to get the parking break wire grounded tomorrow. Debating if I want to just return to stock now and if everything works tomorrow, I can try a custom rom again later. Kinda annoying that I can get my girlfriends I-phone to work with the head unit and not my own. Currently running pure nexus 6/12 with no luck. Thanks again for your advice. Getting waze to work will be the next step once android auto is up and running.

Thanks,
I may revert to stock regardless. I only really use a custom rom because they tended to be considerably better than stock (at least initially with battery life etc). I have not been on a stock rom in so long I have no idea how they compare to customs now. Since i have flashed so many times now trying to get this to work, and I had no guarantee any flash would prove fruitful, my phone is not even completely set up. LOL. So may as well give stock a spin. Regardless, thank you so very much. I was about to give up hope getting android auto to work with my phone and head unit. Especially since the good people of Sony have told me twice the head unit does NOTwork with 6P (granted they also told me twice it did). Gotta love their customer service.
Apparently the release version is out now:
https://www.blog.google/products/android/waze-android-auto-here/
The release version seems to be the same as the last beta: 4.27.0.1
Android Auto now working with regular Waze release!
Yeah, but missing lane assist and no speeding limits is really annoying.
And the calculated arrival time is on Google maps much better than Waze. Only thing what is very cool are the speed traps in waze.
Waze has got wrong routing to me and is not a good navigation system. And i don´t like the social blabla with points and that stuff...
Maps and TomTom are much better.

I think there's a lot more stuff in ways that's a cool than that. Being able to go in and edit the map and add things or remove things and adjust them is fantastic. I do a fair amount of editing when I have time. Also the other reporting has turned out to be extremely important for me and has kept me from running into rather large roadkill and other trash items on the road from people towing trucks down to Mexico here in New Mexico.

You may want to check your ways settings and make sure that they are set correctly for you. You can also do editing in your area to adjust the way that routing happens and it'll work better.
I had posted this over on the Note 8 Verizon board but dont think it is really a Verizon problem but more of a Note 8 problem and might get a better response here.
Just recently over the last couple months, I have been having a problem with getting a good gps signal in programs such as Waze and Google maps. I have done all kinds of searches and many mention to go into settings and in location settings, turn on High Accuracy. That option is bo longer available and not sure if it was eliminated in Pie. I have been doing all the latest updates and believe I am current. The only thing I have been able to find is to go into settings, then Google, and then Account Services and there I found location. The only choices under Improve Accuracy is to turn on Wifi scanning and Bluetooth scanning which I have done. There no longer is a choice of High Accuracy and the ability to turn GPS on or off like I had in previous phones and previous versions of Android. I have even tried turning on High Performance under Battery Power settings and turned off any choices to optimize battery or disable apps. I ended up downloading 2 different GPS apps from Store, GPS Status and GPS Fix/Optimizer. I will normally use Waze or Google maps through Android Auto. I can tell when there is a problem when the position indicator keeps bouncing all over the place in Waze and cant find exactly where I am. When that happens, I will check on GPS Status and it always shows that it is having a problem acquiring the satellite signals. I will then open up GPS Fix/Optimizer and on the home screen, there is a button that will say Service Off. I press it and it will then read Service On. Switching back to GPS Status will now show that it is starting to acquire multiple satellite signals. When I switch back to Waze, now it is able to show my exact location and begins to work properly.
This is driving me nuts. I never had this problem on any other of multiple different phones or Android versions. I can get GPS working but have to jump through all these hoops each time and it sucks. So what other steps can I do to be able to fire up Waze and have it find me right away?
I've had this problem for YEARS on all my Samsung devices running the latest firmware updates and unrooted while connected to a LTE data plan. The issue doesn't affect my other (new) Samsung A30 however. I've always had the latest note series since the Note2, 3, 4, 5, 8.
If I have my Samsung A30 and Note 8 with Google Maps giving me turn by turn directions, my Note 8 (as with my current phones) will stop reporting my location from the very begining of the trip while my Samsung A30 is giving the correct updates. All phones are connected to the same carrier, and same GPS / App settings.
---------- Post added at 08:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:01 AM ----------
What is consistent about all my Notes is that I've been using Samsung Smart Switch to transfer over the data from the previous Note to the next. I wonder if I transferred over some corrupt settings somewhere. No GPS app works as it should for me unless I'm connected to WiFi, or restart my device, then it works for a few minutes, then gets "lost" again.

The more I've looked into it, it seems to have occurred following the early Feb update. It also seems to have affected S9 phones and Note 9 and 10 and possibly others after they got the Android 10 update. But it seems to be only a Samsung problem. Samsung, Google, and Verizon are all blaming each other instead of trying to figure out a fix. The biggest issue I see is the lack of control of being able to change the GPS from off to on. Without being able to control the GPS, we are at the mercy of the software to do that and it is obviously failing. The only workaround I have found was what I posted above and utilizing GPS Fix/Optimizer and GPS Status apps, I can get both Waze and Google Maps to work properly. It just bugs me that I have to go through several steps to do this instead of just firing up my navigation app and taking off...
And just to add, I too have used Smart Switch many times before and never had problem. It only started recently. As far as the control for GPS, I'm not sure when that setting was removed. I never paid much attention before because it wasnt necessary. But what I did find curious was that Location setting was buried instead of it being one of the main settings. You really have to dig to find it now...

I have noticed that certain apps like GPS apps require that you reinstall them onto your new device from scratch. As SmartSwitch doesn't seem to transfer the data files corrected to other Samsung devices.

I agree with that but this is not a new device nor have I done any kind of restore or transfer from an old phone in quite a while. All my apps have been fine for over a year now on this Note 8. This only started after the first February "Security" update.

Im pretty sure that's not the case. My Note is still on Android 9 (Pie) which it has been for almost a year now. It has only gotten security and various minor updates but not any kind of OS update. Note 8 will not be getting Android 10, only security updates. I always update Waze and Google maps anytime an update comes out. I usually update all the other apps at least once a week. The GPS apps that I recently downloaded are the only reason that I am able to access and use my GPS through Waze and Google maps.

I've cleared cache, app data, uninstalled all GPS apps, before re-installing in an unsuccessful attempt to resolve the issue.
I even left the Google Maps "beta testing programme" thinking that a beta copy of the app might have been the issue.

Download the 2 apps I mentioned and run them. You may have to do that every time before using Google Maps but it should get you working. It's just aggravating to have to go through several steps when I should be able to open the main app I want and have it work.
Something weird just happened. I know that a couple days ago to find the location setting, I had to go to settings, Google, Account Services, and I found location there. Tonight just messing around, I noticed that it is no longer there. Instead, it is now found under settings, and then Biometrics and Security. It is down towards the bottom. Not sure how this happened as I have not received any kind of system updates. Also GPS Status app seems to just run in the background. When I open up Waze, it seems to find my location right away. I will have to keep monitoring this and see if the problem has actually been worked out.

I've already done this from even before this thread was created, but as you said, it is frustrating for me to have to do this every 10 or so minutes, as GPS stops working quite frequently on my Note 8. GPS was fine with the bone-stock firmware out of the box.

Yes, and yes. 10 minutes later, GPS stops working. It works great if I'm driving past WiFi, however.

Hey Mikey,
I've noticed that it has improved, but definitely not resolved.
I'm wondering if a factory reset will revert all software updates? I have an appointment tomorrow at the samsung store, and they are going to factory reset and install the most recent software update via their system rather than an OTA which builds upon other updates. I'm backing up my phone now... which in itself is a pain. If not, I did try the GPS fix and the other GPS software, but I did not try them concurrently together, as I found GPS fix to work better. Ultimately though, I didn't think it helped by itself.

No.
I'm bumping this back up to the top. One thing I have noticed is that if I haven't used any location type apps such as google maps or Waze in a while and then open up Android Auto in my Chevy, I have a 50/50 shot of the gps actually working. Actually probably less although occasionally it will work right away. When it doesnt, I have to pull the cord out of the phone disconnecting the Chevy from My Note 8 and even if I only open up Waze or google maps after that, it will still not be able to locate my exact position. When this happens, I have opened up GPS status app and the phone gps is definitely not working. I will then open up GPS fix/optimizer and in the bottom left of the home screen, I will toggle the Service Off to Service On. Checking back with GPS Status, within a couple seconds, it shows that the GPS is now working. I can then plug my phone back into my Chevy and Android Auto with either Waze or Google Maps will be working fine for as long as I'm using it.
I originally thought it was a Samsung software issue. Now I'm starting to wonder. If I use Waze or Google Maps as standalone, they seem to work most of the time. It seems to happen mostly using Android Auto first which then opens the navigation software and if I haven't used any apps that call for location recently. I'm stumped...
Looks like I may be on the right track and Android Auto could be the cause of my issues: https://support.google.com/androidauto/thread/17860576
I also found some other info that Adaptive Battery and battery optimization might also have something to do with it. I turned off adaptive battery by going into settings, then device care, then clicked on the battery icon. There are 3 dots in upper right which let you into battery settings. You can turn off adaptive battery there. Next, I went into settings, then apps, and first selected Android Auto. I clicked on the battery choice and then optimize battery usage. There in the top left, I switched from apps not optimized to all. From there I then found Android Auto and turned it off. I then while ein same screen turned off optimization for Maps and Waze. Unfortunately I dont drive that often and now with the VID, I am driving even less so it may be a while before I can verify that this worked.
An update to this. I reached out to the sub forum for Android Auto over on Google Support and got semi confirmation that the problem could actually be coming from Android Auto. One of the explanations given had something to do with Android Auto trying to get info from the vehicles gps device to make it more accurate but it may have problems communicating with the vehicle gps system. I do not have a dedicated navigation in my vehicle so not sure what it is trying to actually connect to so this could partially explain the problem. Why Android Auto would need to connect to any gps device in vehicle is beyond me because for years, my phones have always relied on the in phone GPS and have worked just fine. Here is that thread:

So I'm having the same issue on an unbranded note 8. But I'm not using android auto. I can use gps tools and it holds a lock fine. But if additional programs are launched, waze, maps, jbv1 I lose lock.
