Tried clearing cache ?
Just reinstall it. Backup and restore later. That's so strange xD maybe related to Whatsapp Business...

Got a replacement N1 from HTC.
Like with the first replacement, the Google "Backup" to transfer installed apps and settings does not work at all.
How can I either FORCE the "back up my settings" feature to work or is there a (FREE) alternative backup program that I can use?
well i dont think there's a way for call log and sms messages unless you use titanium backup. but what i do is use sms backup app (free) and call track (free) which run as a service at all times in teh background. sms backup sends all your texts to your gmail account in real time, under its own label, and call track sends all your call log to your google calendar in real time.
this week i needed to refer to an old text message, so i open gmail, find the sms label, and there is my complete text history in individual threads by contact in an IM style conversation, shows received and my replies. its brilliant. its a permanent record of all your texts and calls ever made.
i find when bouncing between ROMs and whatnot, that the only thing you lose everytime is texts and call log. everything else gets reloaded, like all apps get redownloaded automatically, settings get saved, bookmarks get saved, etc. so using those 2 apps basically saves me from losing anything.
EDIT: if you still have your old nexus, just install those 2 apps, and you can do a backup of everything now. it will take a little while to upload it all, but then from here forward just let those apps run all the time and you never have to worry about it again.
Thanks - I have been using call tracker. will try sms backup.
So how do I backup all my other settings (eg exchange, wifi, ringtone, ...) and apps?
As I mentioned in the OP, I can enable and disable Google's back up my settings however I want ... it just doesn't seem to work!

Is there any way to force Backup SMS to use names instead of [email protected] in the to/from (which is rather stupid)
SMS Backup & Restore app, as it says.
Call log Backup & Restore, as it says.
APN Backup & Restore, as it says.
All those back up the data to SD card.
All the rest is covered either by Google backup (if you check the "backup everything" on the old phone and don't check it when you setup a new one), or by Titanium backup.

I don't understand. It does use the names for me. All my threads in gmail are sorted by caller name.

For me WiFi is backed up by Google's backup. Ring tones are on the memory card. I don't use exchange.
About two weeks ago I couldn't receive any texts, I could send them because my friends would respond back and my Google voice shows that it had to of gone through for them to respond, but on my phone it won't retrieve it. The weird part is if someone sends me a photo or a group message I can receive it, but individual texts won't come in. I called sprint and they said nothing is wrong with my phone, they're going to call a engineer to check out where the problem is.

You probably need to clear out the data and cache. You could also try re-installing Google voice. The reason you receive the texts with photos is because those are handled by your messaging app not by Google voice. Voice only handles txt messages not mms. you also need to check the voice settings. Your settings could be set up to have the message app handle txt messages and not the Google voice app.
After about 2-4 days from getting the marshmallow update the messaging app, the WhatsApp app and the call log won't display any names from the phone contacts, my friend has the same phone and the exact same thing happened to her, not even when calling a contact from the contacts list the name will show up. Does anyone know of a way to fix this issue without doing a factory reset?
i had the same problem one time, try to see if contacts are duplicate it, i dont remember how can i fix it
Go to setting -> apps -> find whatsapp and click on it-> go to permission-> give it all permission required. Now open whatsapp go to contact and refresh from menu and all the contact will be there now. If it doesn't refresh properly force stop whatsapp and refresh again.
Facing a unique problem (which hasn't apparently appeared in any other discussion forums):
- I cannot upload / send photos/documents/videos to other whatsapp friends. It freezes after uploading some of it (sometimes 4-5%, sometimes 50-60%, it's random).
- similarly, my chat backup to google drive freezes while trying to upload
I am non-rooted, on EMUI 9.0.0.126, have performed wipe cache, have uninstalled and reinstalled whatsapp and yet the problem persists. Which makes me wonder if it's some phone setting. I have set battery management to manual for whatsapp, so it's probably not even that.
Any help/pointers would be appreciated.
I had a similar issue. Uninstall whatsapp and delete the backup from gdrive. Then reinstall whatsapp. I would advise to take a backup of the whatsapp folder before removing it though
Tried that. But uploads still don't go thru. Weird.
I have debloated my phone and replaced the Chinese apps with Google apps. Notifications work without any problem. I knew going into this that I wouldn't be able to use Android Auto, Google Backup, and 'Hi Google' voice activation for Google Assistant, but I've run into a snag with the Google/Android Messages app. I can send and receive text messages, but when I try to send a picture it just says "sending" and I eventually get a system notification that my message could not be sent. This happens whether I have RCS Chat enabled or turned off in the Google Messages app settings. In both the Google Messages settings and my Vivo system settings I have enabled "allow MMS messages". I know that MMS uses Mobile Data only, so I tried sending a picture with the phone's WiFi turned off thinking the phone was trying to send the pictures by WiFi rather than Mobile Data, but they still won't send. I have installed an uninstalled the app, gone into Recovery Mode and cleared the cache partition, but the problem persists. If I reinstall the default Vivo Messages app the pictures send instantly. Can anyone think of a reason why I can send SMS but not MMS in Google Messages?

Hi Craig. You know that I face the same problem. One of my friend is working in Vivo France. I contacted Vivo China to expose the problem with google message. They find something and they told him that they are going to push an update soon with a patch for google message. ✌✌✌✌✌✌
Thank you for staying on top of this!
