The ota checks if everything is stock before flashing and being rooting will cause it to fail.

People usually modify the update script to remove all asserts and then the ota flash able zip will work.

Causes it to fail, but you can still get updates just as easy.

You'd have to download the ota then edit it. OTA is not the only option either. There are full ROM.zip available to flash from recovery too or even fastboot flash the system and boot images.
One problem removing the asserts can cause is if you modify your ROM in any way besides root, you can be patching with the ota, mismatched code...
I've been searching for ages on how to receive the OTA update while rooted with TWRP recovery.
To add on to the difficulty, I have a mac so all the directions and steps I've seen are for windows users (the whole fast boot everything except user or something).
Can anyone link me to the stock ROM that someone mentioned in this thread or at least give a or give me a link to a step by step instruction on how to update on a rooted Nexus 6 running twrp? encrypted as well.

The steps are easy,
1. New OTA?
2. Download zip (not the official OTA but a modified OTA script that removes asserts)
3. Flash the zip
4. You have new OTA.
Even easier because you wont have to wait for the OTA to come to you and can flash the OTA.
Its not really difficult

Google publishes fastbootable images for all Nexus updates. Just do a google search for "factory images for nexus devices".
A little warning... they need some **very trivial** modification before being written, or they will wipe your phone's userdata.

Where does one find a modified OTA script that removes "asserts"?
I recently rooted my Nexus 6 and a few days ago I got the notification for the January security patches. When the phone downloads them and reboots, instead of showing the Android Mike update screen it boots into TWRP. I've poked around in the TWRP settings and checked the logs and I've had no luck. I did some research as well and haven't come across anyone else having this issue. This doesn't happen on my GS2 when I install a Cyanogenmod update. Why is this happening and how can I fix it? Thanks!
You cannot apply Google OTA updates with a custom recovery. Replace your recovery with the stock version and try again.
Not just custom recovery - any system change such as root will stop the OTA. Depending on how you rooted, you might be able to unoot using the built-in SuperSU function (I'm guessing Supersu?) but more likely than not it still won't work.
The simplest thing to do is forget about the OTA entirely. Download the full ROM from Google, unzip it, unzip the zip inside the zip, and there you'll find system.img, which you can flash in Fastboot, then reroot. Done.

Oh, then as other people said, if you want OTA then totally unroot it, then reflash system of the current version, and flash stock recovery. But it's much better when a new version arrives, just download it, flash system and boot, reroot it, clear cache and dalvik. This way you'll have your updated Android days or even weeks before the OTA.
Hi guys,
since some weeks I've got a problem with OTA official update.
To make a long story short: by doing the small update (9mb) of patches attached, when the device restarts, the same notification will continue to return the same update.
The installation is recognized as correctly when is done, but when reboot, if I do "search for updates", always returns this, which I have already done several times, as I never did before... but I did!
Is there any way to solve? I tried to delete cache and data from the app "system update", but it doesn't work.
Apart from the hassle of always receiving this notification, I would not like this "missed" update prevent me from receiving other important updates, such as the next update to Android Pie.
At the moment I've got a CTL-L29 8.1.0.156 (C432).
Can you help me?

Have you Factory Reset it?
.156 had 3 patch updates to it, so I would suggest to install until they go away. Not sure how many times you have seen this?

I would like to avoid to do a factory reset and set all the phone again. If when stable 9.0 Pie arrived I won't be able to update because of this, so I will do a factory reset.

i had the exact same issue. i don't recall exactly, since i tried multiple different things, but i either did a factory reset or reflashed the entire .156 from firmware finder to get the update to stick.
i did rebrand to C432 and had twrp installed if you're in the same boat.

i'm not talking about root. i'm suggesting you perform a factory reset with the stock recovery, and if that doesn't work, then install twrp and use hurupdater with the firmware files to really go back to the freshest install. using hurupdater will install the stock recovery as well. that got my updates to finally stick
Anyone got the update yet? I got a notification but when I tried to update it was gone.
Oh gosh I thought it was just me seeing things!
I downloaded the update and tried to update through the updater but failed. Got the message "Error:7".
I downloaded the update, change the zip file to update.zip. Using the updater without problem.
Now in 10.1.2
Stock Camera got night mode now, however, GCam still need "Buffer Fix" Option to work.

Yes, this is an incremental update from 10.1.1.0 to 10.1.2.0.
The ROM of course is official, you cannot update an unofficial ROM without unlocking bootloader.

The update is not "revoked". It's just the moderator will remove any unofficial post of ROM in the forum. They want to keep all the ROMs under one official post.

OTA update requires stock recovery.
You can use TWRP to flash the full ROM, but not OTA update.
I think this is the reason.

mi 8 global android pie is NOT GOOD
NO Night Mode as we all waited

i only did the update because i needed the Night Mode but it is only available to Beta Version not Global
so we have to wait longer
Just got a notification for update 6 on my VZW Note 9. This should be build 1CSC1 with the March security patch included. I haven't had a chance to update my phone yet.
Also, I sideloaded builds CSAA and the current CSB3 that I'm on now, via stock recovery and SD card and I'm receiving official OTA's from my carrier. I know some were worried they may not receive official OTA's if they sideloaded those builds. I'm just re-confirming what others such as Mr. Orange have said that you will be back on the official OTA train being on the sideloaded CSB3.
Thank you. I am waiting for an update since I sideloaded Pie last month.

Yeah, no problem. Just wanted to get it up asap to let those who still worried about not getting official OTA's anymore because of sideloading, that they will still get official OTA's as long as they're on CSB3. Here's a screenshot of the about screen with the new build running, I didn't update till recently.

Please help if anyone knows an answer to my issue. I have a Verizon note9 I updated from oreo to pie manually through recovery now I am no longer getting ota updates, even if I search for them. I was told that side loading pie would not effect later OTA's . Is there a way to fix it or I somewhere I can download the updates and install through recovery would be ok too. But can't find them anywhere.

Which version of pie are you still on? CSAA? If still on CSAA, you'll have to install the CSB3 pie build. The CSAA to CSB3 zip to put on your SD card and flashed through stock recovery can be found here within the Note 9 threads. Once you're on CSB3, you'll get OTA update notifications for the next couple OTA updates.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have tired all the usual fixes, clear cache and data uninstall and reinstall xda app,no help...
