Is my device a prototype? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I have two of these T-Mobile devices. One of them originated from australlia, and another one has an unknown origin. So, the one with unknown origin makes me think that it is a prototype model. It has a weird custom android 1.6 firmware, and it lacks any safety notes, model names and notes in general under the battery, while the second one is bloated with them. I will attach a photo of both devices side by side on this thread. (the one with minimal text is what im curious about)

Instead of a prototype, it may be a clone (IDK).
Can you what do you mean with "weird custom android 1.6 firmware"? That's the only really useful info.

maybe it was made by a unknown man. all of that pieces taked from different places (ex: locations like one for a samsung board or nand memory). if you know about repair the entire device of something i can think you will know what happens really easy.

it would be nice if you'd show an example. I did a google search for you, and found idial you mention:

When I google for idial pocketpc I don't get much; only this version for smartphone. Don't know what it does though. You could try it.
Also when searching the forum I found someone else asking for it
have you used forum search and google before you asked this?
i have searched the google.. but i didn't searched the forum.. sorry.. is there any possibilities? cause i feel kinda dissapointed of my x1.. no bb connect, no updates/upgrades from the sony.. unlike iphone and bb
I must admit that looks cool!!!
IMHO it's horrible and inuseful.
it looks cool, sounds like a great idea, but ends up pants.
Why? well we went to touch dialers for a reason, or several... How many rotary house phones get sold?
can you imagine trying to use a rotary to get through an automated dialer?
"Please enter the 13 digit number", erm okay, bear with me, yep a bit longer, okay it's taking a while to get back to the start after I do a 9, just a little bit longe.. "Please enter the 13 digit number" oh sod it!
I do think there's scope for better ways of dialling but touch ones work.
Actually you can't use a real rotary dialer to access an automated service because they rely on the tone which your phone generates when a number is hit. On rotary phones it clicks in rapid succession when it returns to 0, that's how the dialing works.
that is nice but i dunno if u can hold down your finger and rotate the numbers...it be cool if you tap on the number and u see the wheel spin as an animation...that be very cool.

BLS Drug Profiles

Hey, I was bored so I figured I would code this app and throw it on the Android marketplace. It as all of the BLS Drug Profiles based off the Arizona Department of Health.
Before I throw it onto the market I figured I would ask what you guys think of the GUI. Do you guys like the way it looks? Or should I change it, what do you think I should do to make it better? Also keep in mind this is my first app.

Looks interesting. What I can see looks pretty good but you should post the apk so we can install and really check it out for ya.
This is a sorely needed app!
Thanks.
I wouldn't use blue for the text color though.
In bright lights or outdoors, that is gonna be very difficult to read.
Since this app could possibly be needed in an emergency situation, it's vital for everything to be able to be seen without any fuss or confusion.
Make it high contrast ... white text on black.
As for the overall ui, it's perfectly fine other than that. This isn't an app where asthestics are important. It's not something people will be glaring at for hours on end. It's utilitarian, it's reference. And keeping it simple is exactly what's needed.
One thing I might add at some point is a link to Wikipedia if there is one (at least I don't see it from the screenshots). Or if the material you're using for reference has other online references available to the general public, that's fine too. Especially something with links to pictures to help identify pills/capsules etc. That's just an idea.
Great job.
And if you're needing a beta tester, please let me know.
Thanks.

Ok, I will experiment with the color of the text I suppose. I can also ad a link to the Arizona Health Department Bureau of EMS. I also have a disclaimer to add, and it should be ready
Sorry for the double post, just wanted to let everyone know that I posted this on the market

Making poster about installing custom rom.

So I am making poster for my english class in university "THE GOOD AND THE BAD SIDE OF INSTALLING CUSTOM ROM TO ANDROID PHONE". I am writing down pros and cons. So far I have for the pros:
Ability to use powerfull root apps
Better backup and restore
Better battery saving settings
Ability to overclock cpu, undervolt cpu, etc.
Better control of your baseband
Latest version of android OS
Ability to crack applications
Various kernel choises
Ability to edit various device settings
And for the cons:
Warranty will be void
Can be very unstable
Applications may not be able to run
Battery life can be worse
Can be slower
Some features may be lost
Can be unsafe to use tracking wise
Possibility of bricking your device
As I said, I need to make a poster. So far I have this information. Maybe you have anything to add? Seriously, do not hesitate, spread your ideas, you will really help me a lot Also, maybe you have any ideas what pictures should I put on my poster? i think I should put at least two pictures of "something" on it, otherwise it will look very empty.
Thanks for you brainstorm

I've seen where certain apps will not run correctly with certain ROM's, particularly AOSP ROMS. For example, the BofA app runs fine on my Sammy with TW. On AOSP, it can't take a picture of your check to make a deposit thru the app.

Warranty may or may not be void depending on what goes wrong with the phone, who the manufacturer is, where you live, local consumer legislation and how much you are willing to push the manufacturer to honour the warranty.

Change Carrier Name?

I recently switched carriers from MetroPCS and I'm now currently on AT&T through Straight Talk. The first thing I noticed after I switched sim cards and my service was finally activated, was that the carrier name shows "Home" instead of "AT&T" of "Straight Talk".
Is it possible for us to change the carrier name?
I'll attach a picture to show what I'm talking about

Given that I only see the carrier name on my lockscreen for a few seconds until I've unlocked the phone, I see little point in changing it. Now, it can be done, but I believe you need Xposed and GravityBox to do it.
It's one of those things that just kind of nag me when I pull down the status bar
I would use xposed, but I'm pretty sure that it's still not compatible with Android N yet. I was looking for alternative ways of doing it.

I don't believe there is an "easy" way to do it. You're probably going to have to decompile framework-res.apk and edit the carrier name in strings.xml, then recompile the framework. That is probably as simple as it gets, as I don't think there is an app that will do it for you. But search the site. You may find something that works that I haven't found.

You can use a custom rom to hide it. To be able to change it takes a bit more.
I find it annoying as well that is why I only run roms that allow me to get rid of it. I know what carrier I use. I dont need to be reminded.

[FUN] A way to become hTC 10

Let's see the modded back of hTC One M8 trying to be alike hTC 10
The story begins since the phone felt down and got some scratch, and soon he realizes he has to do something and with the inspiration from newest hTC flagship, he had spent more than five hours to make hTC One M8 back looks alike our newest, hTC 10. So surprising !
Work done by a Vietnamese hTC Fan and he called it's a hTC 18
