1 Day left and still no unlockable bootloader.
Say goodbye to major updates from Nokia.?

I heavily doubt, that we will see new Nokia devices two years from now on. Android One program is kinda dying and there's no need for just another mediocre brand. Xiaomi für example is far better when it comes to price/performance ratio.

The only non-Chinese thing about Nokia is the name.
Nothing wrong about buying a Xiaomi or whatever brand, at least you got an open bootloader there.

From what I know right now
HMD is still a Finland company
I just won't use a Chinese phone even it's free, don't want my data will send to the Chinese government, and trying to avoid them to earn any money from me.
They got to pay what they did on leaking the virus to the entire planet

Same
I have much things against their gouvernement

Have fun avoiding products made in China, especially FFP masks and pharmaceutical supplies.

Let's avoid steering this topic towards China-bashing. Let's just agree that there's a bit of China in all of our phones and that's not necessarily a good thing

[Q] Buying tech in China

Heya,
I am travelling to Beijing, China, this summer and I was thinking if anyone would have any ideas on what tech and gadgets would be a good deal to buy while there? Also, would it be a bad idea to buy electronics in China, will I run in to problems using them in Europe (such as software and compatiblity and such?
I am thinking mostly about phones and tablets (and cameras) - smart ones that can be hacked and flashed with a western ROM (or can they?)
Any thoughts on this matter?
I would not buy any batteries there. I've had a couple bad ones in the past. So now I make sure I only stick w/ the OEM batteries.

Good luck... If y have to buy, but from big stores like department stores, though price will only be more expensive. It is because big stores always afraid attracts attention from govt for misbehaving, if govt officials inspect heir goods, warehouse and dig out something else, they are doomed...

Cheaper to get from US. Check out 360buy.com (in chinese) and/or amazon.com.cn in comparison with newegg.com and you'll understand why.
However, buying counterfeit fashion stuff is good.
My girlfriend is working in Beijing, so I have second-hand experience.

Everything you will find in china (without the big serious markets) is fake, they all will tell you its OEM but it's not. If you should buy anything from China it will be clothes, it's amazing how cheap it is.....If you want good electronic devices you have to go to HongKong - Beacuse there is the electronic devices all tax-free.
But I was thinking on order one tablet from china but then is the question is it "rootable" ? does it depends on the manufacture of the CPU ? or what is it really ? sorry for the noob Q.

Oh yeah, just reminded me of the news of an external HDD being spoofed.

oh yeea Hong Kong that place... shopping paradise for electronics and gadgets...
lol I used to live there before i moved to Aust but still going there every christmas for holidays and shopping, cant get enough
and china... I wouldnt trust those stores not even the bigger department stores. unless you know people there that works in that sort of department and knows their way on how to buy legit gadgets and hardwares
There's a lot of cheap electronics you can buy there. I'm not talking about the usual fakes. I'm talking about legit companies that make mp3 players, cellphones, etc without trying to rip off others. They're cheap and low quality but the price is amazing.
Clothes are definitely a safe bet. You can't beat the price.
would love it if some one could pm me a link to a site in hong kong for rough prices on phones/camaras

Trump told them so it must be true
It's U.S protectionism .. Huawei handsets and infrastructure equipment are everywhere (except in the U.S.), and to think the company would risk losing it all by spying, really? Why hasn't there been any proof of these allegations? It truly is BS and leaves the American market relegated to Apple, Samsung, and remaining few. And the hypocrisy, where are iPhones manufactured .. hint, it's not in the U.S.

What makes you think you phones are not breached by CIA already ?
From point of security breach and eaves dropping, its all the same. However if your interest is in giving the US intelligence an advantage by having a better hand at breaching than the Chinese government, than maybe you can stop buying Chinese phones.
Same with trade wars, if your interest is in giving US an advantage in trade wars than so be it. As a non-American, i have no such trade war concerns.
I used to say I have nothing to hide. Now I say I have nothing left to hide!
I just happen to find this which makes me worry.
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/16/...l?smid=nytcore-ipad-share&smprod=nytcore-ipad
I also remember folks complaining, in a Mate 9 thread on XDA, about the app WPS Office perhaps providing a back door.
Everybody collects data on you. Seems like more aggressive advertising now due to google.
Data collection probably not limited to shopping interests.
Also very worried about backdoors on hardware.
It seems hopeless.
Don't get me wrong. I love My Mate 10.
Would just like a balance between security and privacy.
It would be good for the U.S government to provide PROOF, EVIDENCE and not only conjecture.

Yes, that would be good. They claim there is evidence of past breaches but chances are many would probably not believe it anyway. Best is to take steps to improve own security.
I think nearly all, if not absolutely all, cell phones are manufactured/assembled in China... not to mention nearly all the parts no matter who the "maker" is are made in China also. Doesn't matter if their headquarters are located somewhere else. I have had my Mate 10 (non-pro) for a few days now and it is quite possibly the best phone I have ever owned. My backup phone is a ZTE Axon 7 which was possibly the best right before the Mate. So I guess the Chinese have been reading my email's and text messages for years now. If you think this is only happening (if it even is) on Chinese Owned company phones then you are as delusional as Trump, and that boggles the mind!
Wow, such paranoia. So you're all happy to be spied on by your own government but get tin hat crazy when agencies tell you to not use Chinese phones? Seriously? As previous poster said, where do you think most off your devices are made anyway? Sheesh
When the N.K. "gonna nuke us anytime now" propaganda doesn't work, start blaming Russia.
When blaming Russia doesn't work, blame Kaspersky.
When Kaspersky doesn't work, tell the people to not buy Huawei or Xaiomi etc. devices.
It's gonna be hard to drop Huawei's telecom equipment since a lot of network infrastructure uses their equipment these days. Funny innit?
There probably having trouble finding a back door to Huawei and ZTE phones. Besides, FBI, CIA etc are as subtle as a cockroach on a white rug. Whatever they don't want you to buy, run quick and buy it!
Sent from my L29
Was there in the past - 2015/2016 not something similar with the gay phones where the FBI could not crack them and get access to and asked the "fruit company" to provide the software to get access to locked/encrypted phones. They used the excuse that it was important that they had the ability to crack phones used by terrorists...
I believe it could be well that they struggle to find a backdoor on Huawei and ZTE produced phones.
I am sure that the governments have the ability to spy on everybody and if its not the government it will be google or microshaft...
The alternatives are the apple product programmed to slow down as the battery ages and or Samsung products which over time will slow down and or fail due to a mainboard failure, and here I have experience out of 1st hand on my old S3, Note 2 and Note 4 where the mainboards failed due to a eMMC chip failure. Apple and Samsung can keep their crap phones imo.
Yea because the NSA etc can't get in them, no back door etc
First of all, the news shows that the agencies are not really worried about your privacy as a citizen, rather that those phones may be a passive method to learn about telecom infrastructure of the U.S, or even possibly use them as an attack gateway in case of a cyber WWIII.
Now about your privacy:
Huawei, Samsung, HTC, LG, ZTE whatever, all are running Android. Depends on whom you're concerned that will breach your privacy, if you're concerned about the governments, your privacy was breached with the very first smartphone you bought, why? Well, Android is Google and they obviously have backdoors for themselves at least and Google does cooperate with the NSA when they need, so does Apple, so that's one thing. The other concern may specifically be "foreign" governments, which yeah it's possible given how China uses for example WeChat as a way to spy on it's citizens
In short, Huawei or Samsung or Apple, they all are cooperating with some government (May not be directly but through Google).
MONEY!!!!
i would think its more of a breach in the green area, its all about money.....
there is only one thing going on here and that is America being scarred of Chinese corporations...shengzen will overtook every pice of techonlogy in the future. ...and saying that some company is spying on them while "they"(American goverment) does exactly that HAHAHAHA.... what a ****ty claim for them with no proof or whatsoever...well thats how human behaves when gets scarred...u throw every amunition u have at there faces and whis for the best LMAO peace guys

Totall agree, and anyone who believes otherwise should have their head examined. Qualcomm, Apple, Samsung .. they all have a lot to lose by allowing Huawei/ZTE access to the U.S consumer market. AT&T cancelling the launch of the M10Pro one day before CES stinks of Government coercion, which I'm sure was induced by lobby pressure.

it's Xiaomi a India only, are they aware there are more people in the world?

I see they too privilegiate India market, ok India means big sales, but please do not at the expense to make feel non India users as second class citizen in Xiaomi's ecosystem.
There are things that should not ever happened:
1 discriminate features as QC4 when is a thing they can enable worldwide at no expense.
2 Pie update, when it initially seemed a progressive rollout, now seems another "India exclusive" Grace.
I do not have nothing about Indians they're my friends, but I feel this strategy from Xiaomi it's simply unfortunate and at large will have a cost for Xiaomi.
If there are people from Xiaomi here please provide us your version on this history.
because India is xiaomi biggest market after china
I dunno if Xiaomi is doing anything that other makers do. Samsung and LG devices I have had over the years always had staggered rollouts. I have waited weeks for updates to hit my Pixel from Google too.
I have no idea why quick charge would be enabled in some markets and not others. It's a trademarked technology so I would believe that they would have to pay Qualcomm to use/license the trademark and tech.
I bought this as a budget device and my expectations are as such. That said, my expectations have been exceeded for the most part as the experience has been similar to devices that have costed me much more. I suggested you look to another manufacturer, but I think you will find similar issues elsewhere.

Pixel updates are always global, as long I know Qualcomm do not charge to enable features in their soc.
Samsung updates use to be smooth progressive, only carrier customized devices delay, and actually they global rom are the first to update and market specific the latest, 180 degree approach from Xiaomi's global last.
Motorola has similar approach to Xiaomi but they start with they smallest markets as policy to avoid damage spread in case some inadverted bug, it's Clever, but Xiaomi's IMHO it's just bad advertising, India people do not eat discrimination, they want good timely service but not to feel sorry for that.
Most likely they want to check if there will be problems, so they push the update only for India, their biggest market, and two small countries in EU, Netherlands and Belgium.
They will wait a few days for customers feedback, and if there is no problems, they will push the OTA update all over the world.
This is how I see it, it doesn't mean that this is what is happening.

That makes sense for Netherlands and Belgium, quite small markets, but if they just want to re-check for problems, why they start with their's most sensitive market?
As you said, if they started only with belgium and netherlands, and then follow biggers markets to end with India and China, I'll say Ok, that's the way motorola does (and others), conservative, not funny but justified. this is the opposite of non-sense.

I can't believe people are so angry that India is getting the Pie update first. I personally have zero problems with India beta testing the Pie update for the rest of us.

Do you think you will personally be able to guilt Xiaomi into explaining why India is getting the Pie update first?

I have no complaints on Indian, neither I think they are actually "lucky", my complaint are on Xiaomi's immature tricks to approach the Indian market at the expense to allow non sense discrimination, I've meet Indian people and IMHO are the among the less discriminative in the world (despite few exceptions, all populations have exceptions).
Would be good some Xiaomi's official to explain their approach to India (I feel it's dumb), given they don't care to have a public change log about updates, chance to see here (even at Xiaomi's forum) an official apology are close to Zero, these are things to expect from Samsung, not Xiaomi.

How is "discrimination" even a factor here? You're not getting your PIE update when you want it so you're gonna stomp your feet and claim discrimination?
Xiaomi doesn't owe you a thing. They are a company trying to deploy a major update to our OS in a manner that doesn't piss off people like you. I'm sure if you received your update today and it didn't work as you wanted it to, you be stomping your feet saying "Xiaomi hates me because they released this piece of crap update and didn't test it first!! Have you not received all monthly security patches on time? I've noticed I get my security patches long before the "major" manufacturers deploy their security patches. And Pie was released a week ago on the Mi A2. Generally speaking, every smartphone manufacturer (perhaps with the exception of Google) uses a phased deployment approach to updating phones so not everyone is impacted by a potential issue that may crop up. So you say Xiaomi is treating you unfairly because you don't have the update a week after releasing it to India? Since I doubt they are going to change their behavior based on your posts here in this forum, I think you have two options to get updates as soon as they're released...either become a beta tester, or move to India.
And I'm not attacking you. Sorry if it feels that way. Just calling out a temper tantrum for what it is.
Not to mention, it hasn't even been a week, its been four days.

You aren't even qualified to complain. As far as I know you live in the US, where xiaomi never officially launched this device. They could have totally blocked any updates for people like you. I have had an lg phone (Unlocked US Carrier version), and they only release OTA for people with their sim card. So if anyone was to complain you'd be at the end of the line.

It's not just being impatient, it's also the question about QC4, the logic about updates is a progressive rollout starting with a random pick of smaller but representative markets and then progressively include bigger markets, this is how Samsung HTC Motorola does. This mess it's just an unfortunate advertising tactic, as the Indian as first batch are more susceptible to receive a buggy update (as seem is the case as looks like the rollout was suspended).
Then you have the QC4, Indian A2 are 1:1 global AS same hardware, QC4 is blocked to global A2 by software, neither Xiaomi need to pay Qualcomm license as (as far I've searched) is included with the SOC procurement (as was with apt-x hd later enabled -wich many morons claimed not included to lower costs-.
I love the A2, but Xiaomi still has a long way to walk to reach the global phone maker status they pursuit, current marketing tactics drag they in the opposite direction

qc4 is a must in India, they got special bricks with A1 also since the electric grid is unstable ... i'm not sure if qc3 or qc4 matters anywhere else ... chillax mate, your throttle will resolve nothing, long life is rare. If you have a little experience in electronics, you'd know that no current above 2A (@5Vdc) is healthy for the battery. Unless ou want to cry in the same fashon in 6 months after purchase that the battery doesn't keep the charge even for a day.
QC4 is a healthier QC3 indeed .

Lack of everything.

Day by day I'm getting regretted of buying the Honor Play instead of POCO F1, the main reason is not the phone, speaker or the camera quality.
Since I clearly knew what I'm buying. But because of the ecosystem around the phone.
Couldn't buy a decent tempered glass from a good brand. Couldn't buy a decent case for the phone since the volume is not high and most case manufacturer ditched the phone.
On top of everything it's the attitude of the honor company itself. They just meant that after the selling it's your product not the companies.
I already mentioned the terrible lack of official accessories. Even for some accessories the site always mentioned out of stock.
On top of everything the accessories section itself is removed from the Indian website. Which means we only sell phones.
In mobile i can access the accessories section which contains only the charger, band and watch, that too out of stock.
Can't the company keep atleast the charger. It's pathetic.
I want to buy a charger since kirin chipset supports proprietary charging for office use and couldn't get anywhere. Not even in online portals.
This might be my last device with Honor or Huawei even how good it may be.
Worst part of it is, i tried to mail them last time and the mail bounced back. Never seen such irresponsible company.
I feel your pain and know where you are coming from, my last phone was a Nokia 8 which was in a similar position and the honor play is the same sort of way.
I can recommend this as a screen protector though:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07KHP66ND/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's not tempered glass but it'll protect the screen against most scratches.
As for the case I've ordered this:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07F2J4XQY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
But it hasn't arrived so I can't say anything about it's quality.
I sucked it up and paid for a bootloader code and having rooted the phone and removed a lot of the bloatware I'm happy with the Android now, although I would like OpenKirin to make it's way onto the device.

About £40, much more than I'd have like to have paid (and that i think I should have paid at all...) but if I didn't unlock it I'd have just sold the phone and gone back to a Nokia for a more stock Android.

Quit your whining. Who buys official accessories? If you want a charger, buy a usb-c charger. Mine works in the office, just like it works anywhere you can plug it in - office, train, home etc. It's your product after you bought it? What does that even mean? Of course it's yours after you bought it. You're not making any sense, man!

Official accessories is another way of looking at companies interest in providing an ecosystem around the product. An assurance that providing support after sales. I'm using normal USB C charger in my office and official charger at home. Kirin uses proprietary charging techniques so third party supported charger is too few. My problem is why can't they have charger in store? Is that difficult to source even? If they can't even source the charger what will happen if any parts of my phone go kaboom. Will it ever get's repaired?
Apart from that how can an official email id get's bounced. Even my personal gmail have unlimited space. My problem is the companies attitude towards users not the product. it keeps the phone alive for at-least some years. I had low volume phones in past and had difficulties in company stopped updating it before an year. I don't want Honor Play to join that list.
Just sell your phone and buy a pocof1, good luck with that

I'm not saying that I'm going to buy but when Play got released F1 was in vicinity and i know it's pros and cons. Number of good accessories released for that phone is more than play and a little push from the company partnering with few more manufacturers will increase the value of the product. My regret is not with the phone, it's a great phone and am enjoying every bit of it. Just disappointed with the company.
i bought honor play at the time when poco f1 was going on flash sales on flipkart i missed my opportunity to buy poco twice due to that stupid flash sale and hence out of frustration i bought honor play

The thing is, you should have also realized these chinese companies are releasing products left and right. Honor Play is not a flagship phone. Its a budget phone and Honor/huawei have better products to support. Dont be a dumb person and make do what you bought. Just buy a freaking usb c charger it will work. Damn these millenials pisses me off

You want a company that supports their phones all the way? Buy an iphone. Damn

No more Android updates - Google Suspends Business with Huawei

Verge and every other media outlet is reporting google has suspended business with Huawei. So no more android updates, on current phones google apps will get updated but Huawei cannot use android on future phones. I think it is about time they let us unlock the bootloader. Thoughts?
I am gonna stop using Google services. Switch to bing, MSN email, buy button Nokia phone
Lol. It's refund time
Presumably security updates are considered open source so users "should" get those, depending on how long Huawei take to roll them out ... ?
Way to go America, you've just screwed over Huawei users. Huawei now needs to unlock all their phones and open source their phone software. Become dev friendly and give the US of A the middle finger.
Please don't make Huawei that innocent. See who runs the company and why his daughter was arrested. See why MI5 has concerns about Huawei. See why polish internal security agency arrested one of the bosses working in polish department of huawei. Why is Huawei having so many connections with Chinese gov? This company is just a tool. I hope they get banned from Europe with theirs crap phones as well.
How come Apple does not want to cooperate with US gov? How come they always oppose FBI that wants to have a back door for the iPhones?
Why Samsung or any other company was not blamed for spying?
I am really hoping to get a refund from Three for my P20 Pro...

Honestly i prefer the chinese to spy on me rather than FBI.
But there is no proof that they spy on huawei phones, since all Huawei phones are shipped with EMUI europe and not the chinese version.
Why don't you go and live in China then? They have a lovely system that rates citizens based on behaviour and political preferences. What if you had different views than majority and thanks to that you would be denied a credit card or acccess to some services.
You are right, there is no proof they spy on phones but they hold your data. Do you like to hold your data in spy hands?

The hell did i do other than purchasing a huawei phone that is better and cheaper than all the phones that have released? (talking about the new flagships)
I value my kidneys, hence why i don't use an iphone or the new samsung flagships (even s10E is more explensive than p20 pro in my country).
If you hate Huawei, sell your phone and buy something else. It's Trump's fault for being a jerk over a company that has done better than Apple and maybe against Samsung.
I am not a sheep about this company, but i am saying from my experience.
Trump didn't attack Samsung and Apple because they make the profit in USA, hence why Huawei is attacked. It will apply to Xiaomi soon.
In the end, everybody picks what phone they want and it is a bad move from a president to obligate people who owned their phones that wanted dearly to be trashed by restricting stuff.
I believe in Huawei that they will solve it by giving more attention to Appgallery. They may soon ditch Android for their own os. If they will do it, then i can already see my phone being extremely fluid.
But it's a matter of time. I will say it again, **** Trump.

Also, Facebook and all apps owned by them are collecting data too but still not banned.
Take a guess please.

**** trump indeed. I'm from the UK and his dumb ass is affecting me too. If it can't be resolved, then I hope Huawei release a tool for unlocking the device, so we can flash custom roms and still have a secure device.

You honestly think their whole OS is actually 4GB ? Lineage is less than 1GB ?
Think about it.
Yes for sure they will let you unlock the device ???
Basically the ban doesn't change much as Huawei's slow ass security updates appear once-twice a year.
I'm actually glad they lost the license. It's disgusting that 3 year old Galaxy S7 till March had been receiving security updates almost every month. Now they have changed it to quarterly which is still better than Huawei.
I will stick with Huawei, hope they going to over come this difficult time.

EMUI has lots of features + the desktop mode and whatever ai things it has, hence why it has 4gb total size
LineageOS is just AOSP with a few tweaks, hence why it has 1gb total size.
But either way, the phone comes with 128gb storage so i don't need to worry about running low.

This is all about business. Huawei are getting too big for the US liking. They are fast becoming number one phone maker, beating apple, and would be ahead on 5g rollout too but for US interference. Regarding the spying, the Germans found no evidence. Poland in extremely right wing pro US now, hence blocking huawei. American companies Google, Facebook, twitter all collect data on everyone, they are also compliant to US government demands to shut down accounts they don't like. US foreign policy is nearly always about business interests. Its us left holding a huawei phone that may now be left without updates to new releases. Unless maybe there is some comprimise made.

You can't just snap and boom you got an update. But i agree with the slow updates but better later than never i guess.
Let's see if we get a new os anyway and then we will get ios-like fast updates.

Poland extremely right wing ??? SAY NO MORE ???
I ensure you it is rather left wing party...
Anyway, that makes me wonder why they didn't ban Samsung? Samsung is way ahead from Apple. Why they didn't ban HSBC, Philips, Shell? Or did Donald Trump just have a bad mood and accidentally put his finger over Huawei on his to ban list?
Huawei can only blame itself.
