Mi5 softbricked after removing default launcher. File recovery possible? - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I have removed default-launcher by accident, then i tried to install Mi Launcher from store, and everything was meh. After rebooting my phone, it stuck at recovery menu. After that, i updated the firmware using Mi Assistant, and nothing changed. I just want to backup my photos and files. I wasn't able to get any success with fastboot and adb either. Bootloader is locked, device is not rooted. Could you please help me?

Hi, so are you able to boot into recovery? In recovery, your computer could recognize the phone (in TWRP it does).

Yes it boots into stock recovery menu. I don't have a custom recovery installed, and i cannot install either because phone's bootloader is locked (which will wipe the all data including my images etc. if i do that). My USB-Debugging was enabled while the phone was on, but right now, I am unable performa any adb commands.

Ok, I see two possible solutions:
1. When you boot to stock recovery and connect your phone via USB, does it open on your PC as a drive? Could you extract files this way?
2. Are you able to install updates via stock recovery? (I had to ask, I didn't use stock recovery for years) If yes, you could theoretically flash an original Xiaomi ROM. Please see this article: https://bit.ly/39wTVmj

1. Yes it connects to pc but not as a media or drive, in sideload mode in adb. There is no way that i can make it force use that.
2. I am not able to install updates via stock recovery. It doesn't have option nor file explorer like the one that you posted. There are 3 options:

- Reboot (Regular reboot)
- Wipe (I would like to wipe cache partition but it doesn't give any information. The info on the net suggests that it factory resets the phone. So my data/photos will be gone)
- Connect with MiAssistant (In this mode PC detects the device in adb sideload)
The problem with MiAssistant is that it's no longer continued to be developed in English. So the latest version they provide on their website is not even recognising the device. However after some search I found some unofficial translations of Chinese Beta versions of this software. I have found v3.0.3301.134 and v4.0 versions. v4 crashed during installing stock rom (recovery.exe stopped working), however I was able to "Update" to the stock rom with v3 version using this guide.
After that nothing happened. It installed till 100%, and keeps rebooting. I am not even sure if it's installed correctly anymore. All i can think of is wiping cache, but that doesn't seem possible either.

In this case, I don't know. Maybe someone else will find solution.

I don't know if my solution will work or not, just try it if you don't have any other option.
Try it at your own risk, IT MIGHT HARD BRICK YOUR DEVICE.
1: Download Miracle Box crack.
2: Install Mi 5 and Mi 5's fastboot driver.
3: Open Miracle Box and follow the screenshot I uploaded.
https://2.pik.vn/2020c57cbe0d-5f8e-4fae-b73b-7332da16e2b2.png
4: Tap the "Start button" and wait for miracle. Reboot to your phone, if it shows "unlocked" then it means the bootloader is unlocked, install TWRP. Launch TWRP then connect your phone to the PC and get the files back.
(Sorry for my broken English, this is not my main language tho)

Cannot enter into recovery; Suppressed ROM problem - no help given by its cook

Dear Xda'ers,
I am really desperate on the situation and need your help.
I tried every solution to get into recovery mod including SFT and others available, no luck in getting there.
The rom is working, so no bricked phone situation, problem is gapps terminates itself making email and other functions unreachable.
So I want to switch to either the official rom or another one which is in the forum.
Phone is roooted by the way.
Any suggestions?
PS. As put in the title, this roms cook told me that he cannot help me.

Hello.
If you just want to get into recovery mode, open terminal emulator.
Type
'su'
Allow it and type
'Reboot recovery'
Without '.
Works under cwm.
If this doesn't work.
Use smart flash tool.
(Quoted) ⬇
After flashing your phone should Boot into recovery.
Dont forget to do always a factory reset. If not -> bootloop
radkor said:
SmartFlash Tool completly erases device memory during flashing.
Phone will make Factory Reset at first boot after flashing!
You can upgrade and downgrade. You can downgrade from V20N too!
This also will remove phone lock if you forget unlock code or pattern. (phone lock, NOT simlock or network lock...)
This method doesn't need internet connection.
If you want to flash an LG P970H download correct ROM from link below.
With this solution you can unbrick LG Optimus Black P970.
It fixes bootloop, "ERROR LG Security Team", and BSOD - blue screen with green writings (untested).
Only requirement is ability to enter in to S/W Update mode and not broken hardware.
Tested on: Windows 7 Ultimate x86, x64 and Windows XP Pro SP3.

You need to install LG Mobile drivers. They are located HERE. [CRC MD5: e4614071e72c0292d3a8238908b5c7ba]
1. Unpack SFT.rar that contains SmartFlash Tool program.
2. Unpack, preffered C: drive, firmware pack BIN_LGP970AT-00-V10a-EEU-XXX-MAY-09-2011_0.zip

ok it seems there is also an other way to enter recovery:

it should boot straight into recovery.
Cant you push recovery through adb/fastboot?

Hi guys,
Tried the two methods from DuffBoon and wash beer - no luck.
I think there is something wrong with gapps as it gives an error when I try to download smth from Google Play- so no option to load any new app.
I go into terminal emulator, input 'su' and have superuser rights, than punch 'reboot recovery', it reboots but no recovery at all.
My diagnosis is CWM and gapps is broken somewhat; SFT or another method is not working for that reason.

But your system is still working? There is an adb flashable cwm recovery from redy06 somewhere here. Google:
Xda cwm touch redy06
And youll probably find it. You can flash it with the device on. There also is a reboot recovery script in the pack, so you can check if it works or not.

[Q] Please help savage my Z1

So the other day I confirmed for an OTA update for my Z1. Little did I know, 3 seconds and an auto shut down later, I would end up with my Z1 being stuck in a bootloop with no access to recovery mode.
I really need help on getting my Z1's internal memory (photos, notes, contacts) extracted. I tried a few of the local repair shops and they said that the data inside is corrupted.
I've try ADB but it says "permission denied" whenever I try getting in the storage>sdcard. Probably due to me putting a swipe pattern lock screen on it.
So if there's any hope at all, I'm willing to even disassemble it if that could even help.
I've not rooted it but I do believe the bootloader is unlocked.
- I should also mention I'm a real amateur at this stuff so please be very patient and specific with the instructions. Thanks!
Try using this guide: http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/how-instal...z3-z2-devices-via-xperifirm-flashtool-1492498
it's for updating your os with flash tool just use an ftf file for z1. And in the final stage of the update untick the 3 wipe options and this should save your data.

i'm not totally sure this will work, depends on how much your memory is ruined. If it was just an installation of your os error this should reinstall an updated os without erasing data. first try other methods for saving your data and if you won't find any, try this one
btw, in the picture i posted i didnt untick those 3 wipe options, don't forget to untick them else you'll wipe your memory!!!

1. try flash ftf again, unstick applog and data, stick on cache ( wipe cache). try several times maybe it will bootup.
2. you sure your bootloader is unlocked ?
use flashtool to check your bootloader status, if it really unlocked just flash a custom kernel have build in recovery to save your data.
if it is locked bootloader, you can unlock via flashtool, it wont wipe you data like fastboot unlock, and flash kernel but you will lose your sony function forever if you dont have any TA backup before. you should consider to choose your data or sony function.
Are you sure your bootloader is unlocked?
Dude, Are you sure that your bootloader is unlocked?
1st confirm that and accordingly there are ways by which you can recover your data.
Guys here have already recommended methods by which you can get your data back. I suggest read through general an Q&A forums. Read thread for soft bricking. Do not panic and carefully follow the instructions. You should get your data back.
similar case has happened with me few times and I was sucessfully able to get my data back.. so dont worry..

activate usb debugging over adb without recovery

The one of my gf stucked in bootloop. Everthing is stock and she didn´t updated it a long time. The problem is we want to backup some things, for example the pictures. I thought about backup with adb but usb debugging isn´t turned on. I don´t know how to activate over adb or if this is possible without recovery. When i install a recovery i need to unlock the bootloader an all thing are deleted.
So is it possible to activate usb debugging over adb without an recovery or is there an other way to backup?

You can only get adb connectivity when booted in a custom recovery or when booted in the OS with USB debugging turned on (USB debugging doesn't matter when in a custom recovery). When booted in bootloader mode, you'll only get fastboot connectivity.
There is nothing you can do to backup the files, like you v said, unlocking the bootloader will wipe everything.
There are 2 possibilities to recover the phone:
Unlock the bootloader, flash a recovery, flash a rom ---> will wipe the phone
Flash a RUU (if any available for your version) ---> will wipe the phone.

I have the same problem - but I was able to get the USB working.
Even though it is in a bootloop, as soon as you have access to the phone, go into the Settings and "About", the click the build number over and over until the phone tells you that you are a developer (i think it is 12 times).
Then go back (or if the phone bootloops, wait until you can access the system menu again) - then go into the Settings again and click Developer, and allow the USB debugging.
You should then be able to connect your phone to the USB, and access the hard drive of the phone.
From there, you have about 2 min during every bootloop to get any data/ pictures/ etc off of the phone.....
(sadly I'm in that bootloop craziness too, and trying to figure out how to get out of it without rooting the phone)

You got something very wrong. Bootloop means the phone won't boot up. It stays on boot animation and can't boot Android, so that means he can't go to settings or anywhere except bootloader menu or recovery. Most likely you had "system crash" error which is not anywhere near bootloop

Question Reflashing stock ROM on bootlooping device

Hi.
Bought this phone 4 months ago and it went into a boot loop, where it would only show the battery empty icon. Yesterday, I tried turning it on again and noticed, that it's stuck at the Redmi - Powered by Android" screen. From this screen, I can enter fastboot. See this video:
VID_20230417_194410.mp4
drive.google.com
I've read that there are a couple of options for reflashing this device:
- aks someone with the authorized Xiaomi account to reflash stock rom using the MiFlash tool (no bootloader unlock needed)
- put the device somehow into ETL mode and reflash stock rom using the MiFlash tool (no bootloader unlock needed)
I've tried contacting someone, who for #1, but they aren't willing to help, for some reason (I'm wiling to pay). For #2, I'd have to open up the device, which I'd like to avoid doing.
Would anybody know of any other options for fixing this?
Thank you in advance!
okay, which version of MIUI are you running?
first get the fastboot rom of the version your phone supports , i recommend the global version fastboot rom , because it works and its stable and u get your updates
download this fastboot rom first
Temporary file download page
miuirom.org
and I will give you the MI flash tool working version at like 6 hours after, Ill post the remaining steps after you download this , btw, you will get a .tgz file , when u download the Rom, thats the one you need

If you can boot into fastboot, then it is already enough.
Now, I suppose your bootloader is still locked
You need to download a MIUI ROM from "EEA", from any trusted website, and remember to download the "Fastboot" ROM to flash it (my favorite is mifirm.net, it downloads faster)
Install MiFlashPro - attached at the end of the thread
Open it up, and you will be greeted with this.
Click on the "Mi Flash" tab, as it is the only one we need.

}
You will be greeted with this window now:
After you have done downloading your ROM, extract it to any place.
If MiFlash does not recognise the directory you have extracted in, move it to C:\. Not any external drive, your main one
Now click on the "select" button box, go to your ROM directory, and simply select its folder
Boot your device into fastboot (PWR + VOL-), click on "refresh" button box and your device serial number should appear on the first line.
Now simply click "flash" and let it do its job for 10 to 15 minutes. It will reboot automatically.
If you dont succeed, please read this thread:
Thread '[GUIDE] UNBRICK YOUR HARD-BRICKED MTK' https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide-unbrick-your-hard-bricked-mtk.4564029/
You will require BROM and to bypass and to flash via SP Tool.

You have either got confused, or being scammed
Newer MTK devices do not require the opening of the device. I suppose you have been probably confused with a Qualcomm Snapdragon based service, that does require the opening, so you can access EDL mode and flash your phone into life, or someone just put up the Redmi Note 10 5G and is a scam, also, on MTK, you do not need to pay for a authorized Mi account. On MTK, it is easily bypassable due to BROM
Thank you both.
I put ran MiFlashPro, pointed it towards the downloaded eea stock rom file and attempted to flash it, but got this error message:
So I presume this is due to locked bootloader? I'll try to follow the second link.
I actually managed to enter recovery mode and do a factory reset. Currently setting it up and plan on updating it.

Good to hear you got sorted. I basically bricked my phone last week (only 3 weeks old ) after trying to switch from MIUI 13 Global to EEA. I managed to get it into BROM mode and used MTK Auth Bypass which allowed me to use Chimera Tools to flash the phone again as nothing else seems to work with a locked bootloader. Currently running MIUI 14 with root and magisk optimisations (blur/high end tweaks, MIUI monet etc) and loving it! Just need a way to bypass Play Integrity API for Google Wallet

Question My redmi note 10 pro max stuck in recovery mode after flashing

Hello. I have unlocked my bootloader last night and flashed my redmi note 10 pro max through fastboot mode today. After flashing xiaomi.eu_multi_HMNote10Pro_V14.0.2.0.TKFMIXM_v14-13 rom, my phone started rebooting, MIUI 14 logo appears but suddenly it went into recovery mode directly within 04-05 seconds. Now if I reboot the phone, it opens but after 04-05 seconds it again went into recovery mode. I tried wipe out and safe mode option too. The scenario is the same for both cases. Asking for your help regarding this

I think you dl'd the global stable, not EEA for EU. You want the 14.0.3.0 for EU.

yes may be. what to do now? how can i flash any other rom?
Put on your phone and try the Apply Update from your recovery. I believe it looks in the downloaded_rom folder in Downloads on internal SD.
There is no such things like apply update in the recovery mode.
how can i flash custom recovery without turning on USB Debugging? as I can't open my mobile right now I ain't able to turn on the usb debugging. please suggest

Correction. The downloaded_rom folder is not in Downloads, but beside it in the root of internal C. Try creating that folder in Windows with the phone connected and put the file in there then reboot and see if it installs automatically. If not or you do not see the phone in Windows, then you can flash the version of TWRP for your phone using the official TWRP source location and install from it. You stated it is unlocked already, and USB Debugging may not be a problem since this is a stock MIUI ROM. Use the 3.7.x from twrp.me.
Can you still get fastboot? If that case, I'd revert to stock with MiFlash and start again...

I can get to fastboot mode. but as my usb debugging is off, my pc doesn’t recognize my device.what to do then?
Don't quote me on this, but I think MiFlash doesn't need USB debug, only the right drivers.

will try then. thanks!
Try flashing TWRP without USB Debugging from fastboot. It might work. Then you can flash your install file inside it, which being MIUI, it should not require USB Debugging either.
hello, to use fastboot you don't need usb debugging, usb debugging works with user confirmation only with the system started, instead, in custom recovery it works automatically, if you want to restore your smartphone, you can do it by downloading the latest miui fastboot for your device from here: https://xiaomifirmwareupdater.com/
once you download the right package (be careful what you download!), you will have to flash the rom via fastboot, you can use mi flash if you are comfortable with it, be careful with the options below, if you leave "flash and lock" it will flash, but it will lock the bootloader, if you don't want to lock it, select "clean all". good luck
