Hi all, total newb here. (Sorry I know you probably hate these kinds of threads).
I apologize in advanced if this is a very simple case / has been discussed in the forums.
I've literally read everything I can in regards to this topic but being such a total newbie at this, I'm still not 100% sure if I got this right.
So basically my phone is XT1095 - which I didn't root or unlock boatlader (simply because I don't know why), that suddenly got into a boot loop.
So on that AP Fastboot screen.
So all options (including normal powerup, recovery and factory reset) produces
'failed to validate system image.
boot up failed'.
What should I do at this point? I've read on jcase's thread that this is a simple matter of "easily fixed by flashing proper boot.img".
Where can I find the "stock boot.img"?
I know graffixnyc has KXE21.187-42 files on his website which can be flashed. Is it pre-rooted though?
Or can I just easily use bhp090808's Multi Tool to fix this?
Can it be used while the phone is still in this bricked / bootlooped condition?
Honestly I dont mind being rooted if it means getting my phone fix. But if I can get it done without rooting it then it would be 'great' since if I fail in any way I won't void my warranty.
Sorry for asking a lot of things. As you can notice, I'm totally new at this. I've successfully rooted and install a custom ROM once in my old S3 but it was only because there was a thorough step to step process.
Again, thanks in advance and I really appreciate anyone's help
Cheers.

I wouldn't unlock or root!!! You could lose your warranty. You can try a factory reset, else return your phone for warranty

Not a response I expect would found from XDA
I tried factory reset but it's stuck on that screen. Fail to validate image. I think the recovery.img is corrupted?

I doesn't make sense to void warranty to try to fix a problem that is covered under warranty. Maybe your emmc is defective or something like that, don't make matters worse.... You unlock your device when you have verified that everything is working, not when things start failing
I am under warranty but I am currently overseas so sending the phone and process the return is a bit of a hassle. So 'other' options is to do a local repair outside warranty here but that costs a bit.
So if I can fix it myself with a simple procedure then it might be the best way.
I'm having the same issue as well if anyone has figured out how to fix this I would be extremely grateful. I am still under warranty, but I'm nervous they will send me a replacement in worse shape than my current device.
My pure edition was stuck at the splash screen and I didn't previously unlock my bootloader. I also didn't have USB debugging checked so I couldn't find my phone using ADB. Unlocking a pure edition bootloader DOES NOT VOID warranty!!! So I unlocked my bootloader and flashed the factory files and restored the use of my phone. I then updated to lollipop, rooted my phone and checked USB debugging. That way I have full control of my phone and can fix it myself if something comes up. There is the thread saying the warranty won't be void after unlock.

same here. anybody solved the issue? can we recover through fastboot? anything we can try?
this happend after trying to root the device (step 7 in multi-too to be specific
You should be able to recover via fastboot if you have the factory image, there are some floating around here.
If it's an official one you don't even need to unlock your phone because the image is signed by Moto.
Here is a link to an official guide on how to flash.

solved.
used fastboot to flash the files from multi-tool (recovery, system boot) booted back up, only pushed root (not TWRP), an d now fully functional again

Can you possibly explain this step by step? Sorry I'm kind of new to this.
Also, will I be able to do this if my battery is low?

I am on my. Way to return the phone to best buy. I was rooted and with an unlocked bootloader and had TWRP. I used the Nexus Toolkit and relocked the phone before flashing stock and now it won't boot. It just shows the team win logo flashing over and over. Please please help as they close in 30 minutes. Also it isn't detected in adb or fast boot.
EDIT: fixed it!

Going to assume he managed to Re-flash factory images.
Moral of this story is don't use toolkits and learn how to recover from bootloops and read about potential problems that could arise.

Hold the power and volume down button until it boots into recovery. Then plug the phone into your computer. Download the stock 5.0.1 zip (luckily I already had it downloaded). Use the toolkit and unlock the bootloader. It will say its successful but the phone will boot loop again. Boot into recovery and should say the bootloader is unlocked. Then flash the stock zip file and it should work! I had to figure it all out as I went because I couldn't figure it out online lol.

No lol I would have completely been screwed without the toolkit. All that happened was I did the steps wrong and I have no idea how to unlock the bootloader and relock it and root with adb and the toolkit was easier for me. I could have googled the adb thing but it would have been much more of a hassle.

Not in the slightest . Your analysis is flawed. You assume this problem was caused by not understanding the underlying structure but it wasn't. It was caused by failing to follow directions. Which would have caused him problems had he used ADB or not.

How is it skewed? If, when he first got his phone, he unlocked and rooted in the normal way and not used a toolkit. He would have known how to use fastboot, including how to flash stock and lock the boot loader. He would not have used a toolkit today and wouldn't have used the wrong order and this thread wouldn't exist.
If you're an advocate for the cheat way and the way that makes it harder for us to help people, so be it. But 95%.of us prefer users to learn things properly and not become a burden to the forum. But you can help them all. Good luck with that.

how to properly root.
1. run the command "fastboot oem unlock" in fastboot. this unlocks your bootloader.
2. flash a custom recovery via fastboot.
3. flash the latest supersu in your new recovery.
4. reboot with root.
5. woohoo!
this takes about 3-5 minutes.

You can use adb. Fastboot is used for the oem i lock and recovery flash. If you want to put the supersu file on the phone without downloading it on the phone you can just adb push and flash in recovery. Done.
Thanks

For those curious. I figured I would check back in with this thread. I did not use a toolkit to begin with. I have the sdk properly set up and know my fastboot and adb commands and the difference between both. What I did:
1. Fastboot oem unlock
2. Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (it was twrp)
3. Booted into recovery and it would not let me access the recovery, just kept flashing the TWRP splash over and over and over.
The issue I think for me, was that I did not wait until the Nexus had wiped itself and booted back into Android to rebuild the file system. Hence TWRP farting out. I simply started from scratch again, flashed all the proper stuff that was needed and followed steps, and I was alright after that.
I have since returned the device though and exchanged it with a new Nexus 6, because my back cover had started to pop up in the top right corner above the power and volume buttons....but THAT is another story for another thread : p
Cheers all!
PS: It has been a while since I have owned a Nexus device, hence my own failure to follow the rules. Things have changed a bit with this Nexus it seems, and it was my fault. I am all good now though (or I will be after I set up this new Nexus 6)
PSS: No toolkits were used, or will ever be used in the creation and resolution of this debacle. My life is hard enough without blindly wandering through the forest of Android customization with my hand held by a complete stranger.

Hello,
Guys i have got Moto X XT1052 from a friend for few days. To mainly fix it. Actually, whenever i turn phone on. It keeps on crashing all apps, like Unfortunately, Launcher has stopped, calender and so on. It's not allowing me to touch anywhere else. So i would like to restore it. I checked all threads and found fine solution for flashing. I can do it. But those who uploaded ROMs on filefactory, it's kinda old. And downloading speed is really slow. Even when my net speed is double of it. I should get 300 KB/s some. But i am getting 50KB/s from their site. So i need help on this. If anyone can upload that ROM(XT1052_RETAIL-ASIA_4.4.4_KXA21.12-L1.26_18_cid7_CFC_1FF.xml.zip) on any other site like mediafire, Google files or torrent. I will really appreciate it. Please i urgently need it. Let me know if anything else to be done too. Because on current bootloader showing Device is Lock. And i saw youtube videos, most of them had Device is unlock. I am using this method, please take a look and let me know. Thanks. http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f78...to-x-2nd-gen-firmware-flashing-guide-1877668/

First you dont need to unlock or lock your bootloader. Have you already tried to just go into recovery mode and factory reset the phone? How did the error start? What did your friend try to do, when he got the error first? What is the EXACT error message you get, while flashing?

When i do factory option in recovery mode, it just boot up phone normally. And then it shows "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped". Then it keeps poping up with more crashes, like launcher, google play services. It hardly let me touch somewhere else. And if i tap "Ok" quickly, phone just shut down. Even in recovery mode, i tried selecting "Recovery" option, and it shown me "Boot up failed". And actually my friend don't know much about phones and all this. He said it just started happening. :l Maybe he installed some weird app. And i don't get any error while flashing. Everything went fine. But when i check phone it doesn't change anything else. Same as old. Even when i erased all user data. Will just erasing data will fix it? Then after that i can do full stock ROM flashing.
Why i am not getting back to stock guys. Everything going fine. Just i checked a thread, where a guy said he is getting that "Variable not supported" something. I am getting same thing. So what can i do? :l Please help me to get back to stock ROM. I really need to fix it. Thanks.
Try motofirmware.center to try and see if they have the ROM you're looking for. I went to this site for the stock ROM for my XT1060 Developer Edition and was able to find it there. It saved me when I messed up my phone earlier this week. When you flash the stock ROM using the RSDLite program, it will do a wipe on your phone as it flashes it to your phone. When you boot up the phone after flashing the stock ROM, your programs should reinstall just fine on the phone once you log on to your Google Play account.

I am not sure why you follow other peoples tutorials, then ask US about them. For help with your tutorial, ask the people who wrote that tutorial. If you want help here, try first with OUR tutorials. I don't say this to be mean, but we are unfamiliar with other tutorials and can only really support ours.... It gives us a standard to reference back to.
From the first page, "Returning to 100% stock with RDS or manual"

Also make SURE you have the right firmware.
Read those threads, and if you still have an issue copy and paste the terminal output here using code tags.
Rather then downloading it from random websites, you know Moto hosts the official firmwares, at least for DE phones on their website so you can get the most recent, verified version direct from the official source rather then going through random unofficial mirrors...

You have a locked bootloader, your not just flashing a rom, you need to use fastboot, a standard android tool, to restore your phone.
Your not going to flash a rom, you will be downloading that SBF you have been linked to, unzipping it and flashing each partition, AS STATED IN THE RSD THREAD.

Ok, let me clear everything to you.
I am trying to fix a phone for a friend. Upon boot I get continuous force closes from a variety of different apps. I am left with a crashed an unusable system.
I have tried to flash Moto X XT1052 (XT1052_RETAIL-ASIA_4.4.4_KXA21.12-L1.26_18_cid7_CFC_1FF.xml) rom posted above by "athulele" using "fastboot" tool, but recivied the following error message. This is first error, with fresh installing. Trying with first command. "fastboot oem fb_mode_set"
Code:
"fastboot" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
It's obviously because "fastboot" and ADB are not present in ROM folder. So i guess i need to copy all files from a software i installed "Minimal ADB and Fastboot" as per other tutorials. Which made me more confused. So i want to go with your tutorial.
Second thing, if i make copy of files in ROM folder. It starts taking commands, but with another error. Which is :
Code:
C:\Users\(Username)\Desktop\XT1052_RETAIL-ASIA_4.4.4_KXA21.12-L1.26_18_cid7_CFC_1FF.x
ml>fastboot flash partition fpt.bin
(bootloader) Variable not supported!
target reported max download size of 805306368 bytes
error: cannot load 'fpt.bin': No error
After that, i think i should not continue. After this maybe please take a look. Let me know where i am doing wrong. Must be totally wrong where i copied those files in ROM folder. I couldn't continue without them. Because of that error. Let me know if i am missing any driver. Because as fasr i know i installed all latest drivers. Let me know. Thanks.

Try the commands without "fastboot OEM mode set". Also if your friend had completely stock system, you can try flashing only system.img, boot.img, recovery.IMG
After you flash this, erase data by " fastboot erase userdata" this will erase everything including sdcard .
After that "fastboot erase modemst1" and "fastboot erase modemst2" to clear modem cache. Then try rebooting into system.
Also, you had typed fpt instead of gpt. That's why you got the error

No no, sorry my bad. Typing mistake here. I did gpt.bin. This time i did mistake, that's why got "error: cannot load 'fpt.bin'". Otherwise it's only "(bootloader) Variable not supported!" And status at end "OKAY" then next command. And i can't take risk for flashing few files only. Because my friend have no idea on this. It's all on me, what can be done. I need to flash full ROM to match up future OTA updates. It's somewhere wrong in copying files in ROM folder. I tried those commands, as per tutorial. So it didn't worked. :l

I don't exactly know whether you need an unlocked bootloader to flash via fastboot. But if you don't want to, then you can try factory reset from stock recovery or from the bootloader. There's plenty of guides all around for stock recovery.

Naw, fastboot works with locked boot loader. It should be able to reflash on locked as long as the files are signed.
athulele, I think he said he tried factory reset...
Dark, your correct that you need to be in the same directory as that fastboot command (note there is also a mfastboot command. Motorola modified the stock android fastboot tool so it could flash larger partitions, at least from my understanding). If your not in the directory that executable is your OS will not be able to find it (unless you add it to your systems path, but if you don't know how or what that is easier to just make sure the EXE is in the folder your working out of)
The second time you tried to run it it looked like it worked perfectly right? but the correct command is
Code:
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
Note the syntax is
fastboot [operation] [partition name] [file], so when you gave it the wrong file it correctly said it can't do it. Everything fine here.
again MAKE SURE your flashing the right files, double check your typing the command correctly (Copy and paste is good, but make sure you don't copy any extra characters at the begining or end of the line before you press enter to run the command)
About the worry over only flashing some paritions: You right to worry, you don't want to do this. HOWEVER, if you have the right files they should work. Go through that list of commands one by one. Figure out why any one command fails and get it to work before moving on... But if your flashing the same thing as is already on the phone, your not going to miss match partitions because your flashing the same version of each partition back over itself just trying to fix what ever one is messed up...
But yeah, make sure you got those files, run through those fastboot commands and post the output here. Copying too much of the console output is probably better then too little.

One thing i would like to ask mate. I am gonna start fresh installation. From laptop now. I noticed one thing, that on
Code:
"fastboot erase modemst1" and
"fastboot erase modemst2"
commands. On boot screen, it just keep showing
Code:
"erasing modemst1..."
for a long time. Does it take that long, or it gets "done" text in a sec? Let me know. I am starting now. Thanks.
Not sure how long it should take tbh. I would let it run, and give it a good while before worrying about it. Maybe open up some kind of system resource monitor on the side (on your computer) so you can see that things are still happening?
There are definitely times that these types of tools will look like its just sitting there though... It should go through eventually, give 10+ minutes before assuming it is not working.

Alright, i am on that command. I am gonna paste whole console commands. Because i think this time it won't work too. :l After every command it's showing
Code:
<bootloader> Variable not supported!
then "OKAY" like it went correct. Plus can you tell me what exactly my variant name is? I can't figure out, as for that OP, it was VZW. But for me, it must be different. I need it for second last command. Thanks.
EDIT : 25 minutes passed. Still same.
Hi guys -
I'm somewhat a newbie here. I think I have bricked my Nexus 6. I had root and an unlocked bootloader. I had Chroma riom installed and was trying to go back to stock rom, unrooted with locked bootloader and through TWRP i deleted everything, including the OS I believe. So now my phone is locked on the Google startup screen (unlocked bootloader) . Suggestions?
Thanks -
John
if your bootloader is unlocked you should be able to fastboot clear cache and user data , then flash a rom from twrp. I would refrain from ever locking the bootloader back up since the update where you have to enable unlock bootloader in Dev Options.

no you are bricked unfortunately. the unlock bootlader option in dev options really seems to have caused more issues then good.

A lot.
You have an unlocked nexus with custom recovery installed, and you don't know what to do? You shouldn't be messing with this stuff. You lack VERY basic understanding. Read the stickies.

Factory images. Follow their directions.

The easiest way if you are not familiar with ADB is to download the nexus tool kit located on these forums from WUGFRESH. That tool will walk you through a step by step process on how to flash stock back. You are far from bricked. I have deleted my entire phone many a times and just re flashed stock back easily. As long as your boot loader is unlocked you are fine
Link to toolkit: http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
The option you are going to want to use is on the front of the toolkit called flash stock + un-root. You can watch some videos on his website as well for flashing stock. That is all you need to do .
Any questions let me know, send me a PM

It is not the easiest option. The easiest option is plug the USB cable in, boot to TWRP, enable MTP mode and copy a rom to the sdcard.
Also, many senior members here will discourage the use of toolkits for those who are not familiar with adb or fastboot. It is best to learn these and use them at least once before starting to use toolkits. Toolkits do not "walk you through". They take you through without explaining anything.

In a perfect world, I am sure we would all love to dive in and discover everything and be experts in all fields as time would not be a factor. I do not disagree it is helpful to learn ADB and fastboot commands and understand what they do. At this point in time though, the end goal here is to get his phone back up and running as fast as possible and then he can do the post-mortem to figure out what he did wrong and how to fix it .
I am guessing hes not very familiar with TWRP since he wound up in this situation. The toolkit alleviates the need for knowledge and gets the job done. I'm sure after this, the OP will research how to use his phone before trying to do anything next.

..but even so, your method is overkill. It is really simple to boot into TWRP and look in the menu for the "Enable MTP" option. Once that is done, the phone appears in "Computer" as an MTP device, just like when you boot into android. Then, simply dragging and dropping a ROM onto that device then flashing it via recovery will get him back up and running. There is nothing simpler or quicker than this.
Sorry, I do not intend to be confrontational here.
Just got a new in the box unit. It was made in 7/2019 and it arrived with Pie installed even though these originally came with Oreo. Is there any way to downgrade mine and, if so, how to do it and were to get a firmware file? Thanks for your help.

Thanks. I do see those threads and those definitely help. But I am still not clear if I can downgrade. Perhaps it is because I am new to LG phones from Samsung and I know that on some Samsung devices, once you go forward you may not be able to go back. So I am just wondering about all that (along with if I can unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, and root on the model 405QA that I have). Cheers!
Using LGUP 1.14 on DEV mode will let you downgrade, matter is flashing cause phones themselves seem not have any issues by downgrading. Personally I've downgraded both my v40 and my older g7 a couple of times, no probs.

Thanks so much for your time and help. I have downloaded LGUP and installed according to this thread <https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v40/how-to/guide-lgup-root-t3967858>. When I try to run it, Win10 asks if it is ok, I say yes, and then nothing else happens. Hmmm. I believe this is LGUP 1.16.0.3. No idea what's up. I have the phone attached and in download mode as described here <https://droidrecovery.com/lg-v40-thinq-recovery-mode/>. Grrr.
Try this LG UP version https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76995781&postcount=26 set the DLL on DEV mode.
As for unlock bootloader question on your other thread, yep so far it's the easiest method to do it. ADVICE: If you haven't touched anything yet I suggest take a bakup of your partitions via QFIL. So if you mess up something (most likely not but you never know) you will be able to restore everything as it was when you got the phone.

Oh thanks so much! That version of LGUP seems to work (after I manually did some file copying that had permission problems from the scripts). I presume that to downgrade - assuming I have a compatible .KDZ - is to use the FOTA upgrade option?
I will look into the backup as you suggest. As a newbie on these devices, there is alot to learn. Cheers

Ok, I see the phone in QFIL. Under the tools menu, I see QCN Backup/Restore. Is this the backup to which you refer? I don't see anything else that looks promising. Sorry for all of my newbie questions.
So, if you are going to do the back up use this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g7-thinq/how-to/how-to-partitions-flash-abl-t-mo-t4051249
Follow steps 1 to 10, Backing up _a partitions will do the job _b patitions will be mirrored from those when restore. Data is not mandatory to back up as it will take much time to read the whole partition. Another tip, rename your backed up files so you can identify them properly later.
Then when you are ready you can play with LG UP most of the time you will like to use Partition DL. Use refurbish only to go stock. FOTA is for updating between versions without losing data (nice if you crossflash/loss the ability to OTA on the phone)

Wow! That is alot of partitions and a lengthy backup chore - even without including the _b partitions. You were 100% correct that renaming each file as you go makes this easier. I used the LUN#_the partition-label.bin as I discovered that some labels were re-used in different LUN.
I never would have figured this out without your help. Thanks.
After a brief rest I will move on and try to unlock the bootloader as described here <https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v40/development/unlock-lg-v40-via-9008-root-t-mobile-t4042207>.

Thanks so much! You might note I have posted in the other thread about troubles getting unlocked. I seem to have successfully sent the v35 bootloader to the phone. I have the QFIL log showing that. But when I go to fastboot mode and try the unlock command, it fails with unknown command. After restoring/sending the backup of the original partition, I tried issuing the same unlock command (not expecting it to work since I should have been back to the original pie bootloader) and I get the exact same error. This makes me wonder if the v35 bootloader is actually getting installed properly. The phone is on the most recent Pie (QA20e) and seems to boot and run fine - even right after I send the v35 bootloader. There were comments that using this bootloader with Pie might have problems and I have never had any so far. So again, I am wondering if the v35 is actually getting into place. A real mystery to me. Thanks!

In my case, it turned out that the phone was active on the B slot. So I took backups of those partitions as well, flashed the V35 bootloader into B, performed the unlock, re-flashed the Pie bootloader. When I reboot into normal mode, I now see an unlocked warning and it took a very long time for the phone to get started and prompt me to start all over with my Android install. Before I do that I am trying to restore the backup I made of the userdata partition to see if that spares me the whole setup thing. Thanks to all.
Yeah you've made it at least. Good one on figure out B slot was active. Now you're able to go custom roms or just go root.

I am just wondering if you are able to use TWRP/Magisk root on the downgraded v40? In the TWRP thread it indicates that it requires Pie firmware be installed. If I cannot use TWRP/Magisk root on Oreo, then I will not bother trying to downgrade.
Again, thanks so much!
Now that you mention it. V40 TWRP is meant to use with pie... Will not boot on Oreo. I think there are workarounds for that if it's mandatory for you to be in Oreo, but not personally tested'em.
