Those are the exact steps I did but I still can't get notifications to work.
I'm in the same boat. Followed the directions 100% and all I can do is call.

Could be that Samsung patched the vulnerability

I've spent hours and hours trying to get things right on the n5 and gear. No such luck. Was able to connect and receive calls and transfer images sometimes. Notifications never worked unless using a third party app like tablet notifier. With tablet notifier using null ROM, I didn't need to use any gear manager to get that to work. The answering calls and transferring photos won't work. Just notifications do.

My gear works perfectly with Nexus 5. I followed the instructions here (http://pocketnow.com/2014/02/07/galaxy-gear-with-the-nexus-5) and it works. make sure you dont miss step 12 (and follow all steps in order). also use the ATN Manager from post #13 from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2596455&page=2
Have you set the security setting allowing ATN manager to receive notifications?
I had to use the .111801 version to get calling, contacts and photo transfer to work. Also i got Atn manager 1.2.2 to work, not 1.2.3

WORKING!
For those that are using other device and not Samsung Devices....
OK I was able to get this working and I will try my best to explain it for everyone so you can understand:
Uninstall any versions of ATNManger you already have installed
Install ATN Manager 1.2.2 on your "Phone" (In my case, Nexus 5), apk HERE
Install the "Watch.apk" inside ATN Manager 1.2.3.1_pre.apk on your "Galaxy Gear", apk HERE
Go to settings on your "Phone" and find security, inside there find "Notification Access" make sure ATN Manager is checked
Open ATN Manager on you "Phone" and check all apps that you want to get notifications from (example: Gmail, Hangouts, Google+, Facebook)
You should now get notifications on all of your apps that you checked, my wife even gets them for all her games.
Too bad it only lets you know you got a message and then you have to go to phone to see it, but you still get the notification if say your phone is on silent. Would be great if we could make this work from Nexus 5 through GearManager as it is better but no luck there for me.
Also while I am at it, here is how to get the WatchStyler app working so you can change your watch faces:
Open GearManager on your "Phone"
Connect to your Galaxy Gear
Click on Clocks to see the list of clocks
With Clocks open hit your home button to minimize Gear Manager
Install latest WatchStyler app (1.1.00) from HERE
Open WatchStyler app
Now open GearManager (that is still running) and you will then see the WatchStyler option, choose it
Make a new watch face in WatchStyler and then open GearManager
Choose the Gear next to WatchStyler and choose the watch face you just made and choose apply
You should now see your new watch face on your Galaxy Gear
Hope this helps everyone.

[Q] New Gear User: Can't find installed apps

Hi XDA, I'm new to the gear and new to the forum. I just followed a guide on how to sideload apps using ADB. I am able to successfully install these apps, but am not able to see them on the list of apps on my phone or on my Gear when they are paired. If I disconnect the gear from my phone and reset the gear, I'm able to see these apps. Does anybody have any idea?
I also installed NOVA and then changed the default of the home button to always be touchwiz (since I want my Gear to be more like a watch and not a mini tablet), but have no way to go to Nova unless I disconnect and reset my Gear. Any ideas or help? Thanks.
I've noticed this too. My gut feeling is that its going into gear manager on my phone that does it as that only lists the conventionally installed apps rather than the side loaded ones.

I'm having the exact same issue.
If I reboot my watch with bluetooth off, my sideloaded apps show up with no issues. The second I enable bluetooth and my watch and phone connect, the apps get hidden. Are there any solutions to this problem?

Keeps apps off Gear Live?

Is there a way to keep certain media apps off of my gear live? I tried to disable the app in the Android Wear notification settings, but since it is a media app.. It always shows up as controllable. I don't want it to show on my Gear Live.
Which apps ?
I think he has the same problem I have and tried to solve here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2839309
It's an app called White Noise that I use as night. So unfortunately, the workaround in the other thread won't really work for me. Anyone else have some ideas?

Delayed notifications after upgrade to Android 8

I have a tmobile note 8 and ever since I upgraded to Android 8, push notifications are coming in delayed and all at once at random times. Take outlook for example, an hour might go by and then all of a sudden dozens of notifications hit all at once. I checked if maybe battery settings were messing with outlook but it is not blocked and my phone is in performance mode. Seems like my phone is going into a deep sleep and not doing push notifications as they come in. Any idea what is happening?
Same thing happened to mind after update. But seems to be resolved now. I think I went into Apps then pressed the three dots in the up right corner and chose reset app preferences. I also messed about in the notification menu somewhat prior to that.

Factory reset. A good practice after a major software update.

Disable the GOOGLE app in app manager. It should ask you if you want to go back to the factory app. Just agree to this. This is assuming you checked to make sure Battery Manager wasn't turning off your app or the data saver wasn't killing your app data access. If you have done these things and your app notification is still delayed it is being caused by the GOOGLE app. Listed as "Google" in app manager. Hope this helps someone else.
UPDATE: I should have mentioned for a permanent solution and to allow you to continue using the GOOGLE app you can go to the Google Play Store, find the installed GOOGLE app, click uninstall to revert to the factory GOOGLE app, once uninstalled click the three dots at the top right and Uncheck the Auto Updates to the GOOGLE app. This will allow you to retain the factory app functions and should resolve this notification issue at the same time.

Notifications stoped on there own

So first I noticed several months that I've stopped getting Gmail notifications kind of anoying because I stopped checking my email for weeks till I remember I haven't checked it
Then I got a dlink camera first week I set it up I was getting the notifications now after that I am not getting any
Is Android thinking I dont want to see these or is there a glitch I still got lots of other notifications that I usually swipe away tik tok and tapatalk mainly
Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk
I don't think any notification channel will disable itself. It's possible that the app could think you don't want the notifications, but it's not something the OS will do automatically.
Have you loaded any 'unofficial' apps recently? Could be a bitcoin miner doesn't want its activities notified?
Are all your apps up to date? I had a similar issue with several apps and after updating them it fixed the issue. I have auto update disabled.
