Recently my wife arrested my Mi8 because of the Google Camera astonishing output, so now I am using an old Mi A1 rooted, but my fingers are already itching, so now in the position of buying a new phone.
The reason I am posting here is that Mi9 is one of my options.
Based on your experience with the device what would you pick Xiaomi Mi9 vs. Oneplus 6T (can find if 100-150 Eur cheaper in mint condition).
Main factors:
- camera experience and compatibility with Google Camera;
- battery;
- lagfree experience;
I now all features and youtube movies, but I am more interested in users opinions than biased reviewers.
Can take also other recommendations if the reason is posted.

Whatever media saids about good batery life on mi9. My experience is not good. Bad batery life. Better goes for 6t. The development of 6t is more good than mi 9.

Same here...I came from OP6 which had almost the same hardware as op6t (same chipset and camera, etc) . All in all, I prefer the mi9 in regards to hardware and features. But I much preferred the OP in regards to its android software.
-I'm getting about the same battery life out of the mi9.
-camera is much better in good light, but not as good in realy dark environments. (gcam is already doing a realy good job for me though, so early on. OP didn't have camera2api support either)
-Speed, I don't think you can realy feel a difference between the 2.
-amoled screen seems a bit better to me
-stock os is much better, and community support was realy good on op. Let's see about mi9, a few months after release ?

The Xiaomi is head and shoulders above the OnePlus as far as hardware specs go. But MIUI, for me, is awful, though it is very polarising and some people love it. OxygenOS is arguably the best vendor Android flavour by quite a long way.
I'm in a similar situation and an looking to upgrade, made more urgent last week by my OnePlus 3 getting a fatal dunking.
I've come close to buying a Mi 9 a couple of times over the last month, but the thought of being stuck with MIUI until custom ROM support becomes more mature keeps putting me off. If I could get LineageOS on it, I'd have already bought it, as it's by far the best bang for your buck.
OnePlus devices have by far the best community development and you'll always have a multitude of options with them.
I'm now going to wait for another 5 weeks and see what price tag OnePlus put on the 7 and 7 pro and if they continue to move the price north in the same way it's gone since the 5, then hopefully there will be some ROM alternatives for the Mi 9 other than the xiaomi.eu version of MIUI

I would add something on this. Development is still pretty new, which means it's kinda hard to do tech stuffs. I agree that stock MIUI has a horrible battery life in Mi 9. I recently switched to xiaomi.eu and battery life has significantly increase. I would say about 1.5-2x better than stock MIUI.
I was on OP6. The camera got broken and I got my money back, because the seller couldn't repair it. I was in almost same position as you and had an rooted A1 as backup phone. I bought the mi9 because op6t is almost the same compared to OP6. If you have time go for OP7. I hadn't time and wanted to try again with a Xiaomi that's why I went for mi9.

I'm at the exact same point waiting for op7 since Xiaomi miui puts me off since I don't want to instantly unlock new phone and start maintaining os by myself. But if I had to I'll put pixel experience in it gcam and I think I'll be good device for a few years to come not really picky about camera and all since I'm still using my op2.
Could you guys compare the battery life between mi9 and op6t? Because this is my biggest concern to buy a new phone.

The OP6 and 6T were a bit more expensive than the Mi 8 at launch, forget how much but maybe around $75 (I seem to remember it being more than $50, but not as much as $100). So I'm expecting the OP7 to be a bit more than the Mi 9.
However, and this is my own personal speculating so could be completely wrong, I'm wondering, with the fact that they'll be releasing a pro version too, if they'll lower both the specs and price slightly of the standard OP7 and bring it in at the same price as the Mi 9.
I've had both. The 6T had better software and better battery but the camera on the mi9 is quite a bit better. Depends on your order of importance but I prefer the mi9 over the 6T

I loved the ROM development on my OP3, and it seems the xiaomi mi9 hasn't any custom ROM development at all (Where are my ResurectioNRemix, Lineage, SkyDragon Roms, etc.. ) ??
I don't like the MIUI 10 interface, I will try the POCO launcher, but I really would like to flash another custom ROM
When do you think there will be nice Lineage ROM on MI9 ?
For now, I don't think it's necessary to unlock bootloader and flash twrp, cause there is no nice ROM to flash ( correct me if I'm wrong ) ?
Edit : Otherwise, I read here about a 'xiaomi.eu 'rom.
What is it about exactly, what are the changes compared to the stock MIUI original ROM ? and is it flashable without twrp ?

Mainly because of Snapdragon 855 (+20% Performance improvement +20% Battery improvement)
And for the price. (I bought the 128GB model at 429€)

Do you guys think Mi 9 will be a better option over Pixel 3XL now? The only thing that is swaying me to that is the stock experience and the camera. Can't think of OP devices as my country doesn't really offer it as an option unless i buy from overseas without warranty. Trying to upgrade from a Mi Mix 2. I see that the development for this phone is not that strong yet (hopefully it'll pick up as time goes by). Any thoughts?

i am an (almost) happy Mix 3 user. Almost because the slider mechanism as example given.. I don´t have any problems with it for now, besides a light wobble that seems to be normal on this model in most cases. I am more concerned about the longlivity of the mechanism and the dust that can get into it (using a FitBag for it). I got my device some weeks ago but i am not sure if a phone made of one peace is just easier to maintain. I always have a look for dust between the both halfes of the Mix 3 and baby it. Some kind of stress..
Now the Mi 9T Pro is available for preorder in Europe i think to replace the Mix 3 with it. The problem is that i am not sure if this is a logical step in performance and features..
I am using the back camera a lot and the Mix 3 one is great for me. I don´t want to make a step backwards, but i think a phone made out of one peace makes me feel better in some way.. Can´t discribe it any better.. Maybe i can´t decide and thinking about to much..

I have both machines. I think it really depends on which feature you prefer.
The MIX3 has a better back camera. The 9T Pro could not beat MIX3 in indoor photos (less accurate focus, relatively blurry details).
However, I like the lightweight (compared to MIX3) and especially the 3.5mm audio jack of the 9T Pro. Also 9T Pro has better endurance. I don't need to carry the power bank with 9T Pro.
I'm still asking myself whether these advantages outweigh the slightly inferior camera.
I have ordered a Mi 9T Pro now on Amazon to direct compare both devices. I must have them in hand to make a decision.
I don't know how to rate the slider. I don't use the front cam that often, but the dust that could get in there stresses me in some way, I always blow it out a little bit - feels like the phone needs a lot of maintenance and babying.. Even if I do this without thinking about it to much.
I had ordered the mi mix 3 then I Saw the k20 pro. I cancelled the mi mix 3 and got the k20 pro. i don't know about the back camera comparision but imo the mi mix 3 is now absolete.
I got my Mi 9T Pro yesterday but i really can´t decide between the both.. I "played" a little bit with the 9T Pro and tested everything, but i can´t help myself - for now i like the Mix 3 more, especially design wise. The slider is so much cooler than the popup cam.. Overall the 9T Pro looks so "normal" when you compare it with the Mix 3, the Mix 3 really stands out of the masses - that is why i always choosed the Mix series.
I also started to migrate my data to the 9T Pro but i stopped it at last to go on with the Mix for today. Maybe i start another try today evening, but i am really unsure.
Even if the 9T Pro is a little bit lighter, the battery much bigger and the display looks a bit more colorful compared to the Mix 3, the slider free display.. I am really unsure in the end if this would be my daily driver.
I am not a gamer, but a power user on Chrome and some board apps. Never got the hardware to it´s limits. I also take photos very often, and in my first impression the cam of the Mix 3 is also better. I did a direct comparsion with both phones photos on a calibrated display on my computer.
If you have both and can't decide, may be it is because they aren't that different. If you think the mi mix 3 is better in photo, keep it and wait for the mi mix 4.
Mix 3 has OIS on its back camera, and I think you need it more.
for 4 months I never care about dust in the gap. Never had any issues. Don't let it bother you.
Heck, I even use it naked, no cases or so whatever. It such a beautiful phone.
And I regularly play that slider toy ?.

I believe the OP7 has OIS on the main camera, K20pro/9Tpro does not.
The OP7 has a (small) notch in the screen. The K20pro/9Tpro has a popup front facing camera.
K20pro/9Tpro has a somewhat bigger battery.
For me personally, the popup cam is not a problem because I don't use face-unlock or take selfies, and having a full notch-less display is very nice.
I imagine that if you're the kind of person that uses the front facing camera a lot, the popup camera becomes annoying pretty fast. (but I don't know because I'm not that person)

I don't use face-unlock and selfies like you. So it 'll not be any issue for me. Though I don't like Pop-Up camera. But I really like stereo speakers.
BTW, how's the battery life of K20 pro ?
OP7 has almost no development - unlike the K 20 Pro.
But I really don't like the bootloader unlocking procedure of Xiaomi. It's really annoying (really)to me.
Would you throw some lights on the multi-media experiences of K20 Pro - 3.5 mm audio quality, watching video/movie experience etc.? Really it's very important to me.

So it has the ability to play High Definition audio.
You don't really need to unlock the bootloader unless you really need root for something or actually want to change ROMs.
I used the Xiaomi ADB/Fastboot tool to disable apps that I don't use. MIUI isn't that bad, for now at least.
I was confused about that last few days, finally bought k20 pro, for 3.5 mm audio jack and price difference. audio, movies and camera are great.

I am probably not the best judge. I don't have an OP7, have only used this device (European 9Tpro) for under 2 weeks now and my previous phone was almost 5 years old. To me, watching video on the notch-less OLED and listening through simple wired earphones is very good.
Battery life is good. In normal day to day use when I'm not traveling, I can charge it every 2 days. In heavy use it will still last a full day easy. I have everything on all the time (wifi, sync, location, bluetooth, ambient display).
I plan to keep mine stock and locked for at least the first month, but yes from what I read on these forums, unlocking and flashing is more cumbersome and has more pitfalls than I'm used to from HTC devices.
My previous phone was OP7.
k20pro 256gb + 27watt charger costs less than Op7. So price wise this is a win.
Face unlock is a breeze in Op7. Miss that comfort on k20 pro. Though always on fingerprint is good & serves the purpose.
4000 mah battery & miui battery management works wonders. Always end up with 30+ at the end of the day. On Op7, it would be about less than 20% by the end of the day.
Oxygen os is really clean. But it lacks serious customisation. Miui is eyecandy & won't get boring. This is probably the only factor for me to switch from op7.
Also, since op7 was just a minor upgrade from 6T, better to wait for Op7t (with 90hz).
But beware of your purchase now, the price of K20PRO will see drop Faster than op7 in very short period of time. (Already price cut of Rs 2000 announced in India (flipkart))
U should also check the asus rog 2 if u are not bothered by large bezels

I like to use rooted device. And that's why I don't like Xiaomi for their bootloader unlocking policy.

BTW, I had some bad experiences with RN7 Pro - MTP incompatibility. My Windows PC can't recognized RN7 Pro and can't install the drivers. And finally I'd to sale RN7 Pro due to this issue. Is there any MTP/ Driver issue with K20 Pro ?

Yes, i really am enjoying the k20 pro. Yesterday, the android 10 OTA was received. So that also is covered.
And miui 11 is on the way by end of the year.
Btw, if u are looking for Op7T for the 90hz display, K20PRO can also reach around 80hz thru mods. Both are 1080 oled panels.
On a related note, asus rog 2 has got some Insane specs for a sweet price (128/8 ) Rs 38k.
K20pro is going to be sold for less then 24999 during the sale season... That's a huge price drop for such a new device and it's cheating for those who bought this device from the start.....

Nope Max drop will be ₹3500 if you are taking into account the initial ₹2000 into account. Even in current sale a minimum card discount is going to be there for atleast ₹1500. As a loyalist I feel that companies should atleast hold onto their prices for 6 months man. If you ever want to resell your device within this timefram now you will face a huge challenge trying to resell. Not that I would be doing that. Its about percieved difference of going from Base bottom Budget Brand to a Premium Brand... They went back to being a budget only Brand with this move. Thats really Bad. I would gladly buy their Premium range of Phones of the Mi Series(I owned a MI3 and Mi5) But they don't release them here in India anymore..
If a Brand wants to induce a loyalty in its customer base they should be prepared to be loyal in return. This doesnt feel like loyalty..

From 5T to 9T it's definitely worth it

I switched from the OP6 to the Mi 9T Pro and i'm really happy with the decision. There are two points to consider, though:
- the 9T Pro is considerably thicker
- oxygenOS is much better/faster/flexible/cleaner than MiUI.

Yup it's definitely worth it. And pick the 8GB 128/256GB if it's available your region.
Also installing a custom rom will not lose its warranty. I find it amazing! If you don't like MIUI you can just install a custom rom right away

I don't think it's worth it. I came from a Galaxy Note 5 2015 and there's a lot of downsides compared to it. The screen on the k20 Pro is very thin and feels like a downgrade. The pixels are less sharp and you can see the dots quite easily. Battery life is okay, 1-2 days with heavy usage. It's quite a weighty phone, hard to hold in one hand. The miui 10 rom lacks a lot of nice features miui 11 has, but currently miui 11 for it is really buggy. (Occasionally reboots, youtube background playback glitches, camera app often stops working).
I think you'll want to go for a bigger screen with higher hz if you want to really upgrade.
I'm also on OP 5T, planning to switch to the 9T as soon as the LineageOS 17 ROM is in good shape.
At first it will feel like a downgrade, I own an OP3 previously. I'd still pick my OP3 over my K20 pro if the OP3 didn't have ridiculous bezels.

If both are running the same ROM, how can it possibly feel like a downgrade if the hardware is superior in every possible way?
From my experience, better camera and battery life, but I miss Oxygen...

There will never be a "BOTH" running OOS bug-free, it will never be the same experience. Spec-wise definitely an upgrade over my OP3, but OOS is what made me say it's a so-so experience. You'll never understand what I'm saying if you've never used your device with OOS extensively for more than 3 years.
Don't let anyone fool you with an essay, if it's between OP5T and 9T Pro there's no match lol, one is 2 years old with old chip while the other runs a 2019 flagships processor.

I understand what you are SAYING, but I will never understand how you are FEELING or why, because I will never use any OS other than LineageOS, and I have 4 devices, 2 phones and 2 tablets, the experience is pretty much the same on the software side.
I switched from 5T to mi9 t pro when it came out. Mi9t pro is obviuosly much faster with better battery life than 5T and better for gaming becuse of the chip etc but in terms of custom roms it is still pretty lacking in comparison to the 5T custom roms which work perfectly but that might have to do with the age of the 5T which has had developers working on it for a long time now. I came from a oneplus 6 to k20 pro. And I am still regretting the decision to switch. I would still happily go back to my oneplus 6 any day. And the sole reason being the software.
Oneplus software is way better than MIUI. I unlocked the bootloader and installed pixel experience. Which was fine in relative terms. Unlocking the bootloader created a few problems like breaking Google pay (India) and other UPI payment apps.
There were errors like google camera not functioning properly. The fingerprint sensor straight up sucks on most of the custom roms. Roms have somehow broken the proximity sensor for me during calls. and there are similar issues for almost everyone.
I would humbly suggest you stick with something stock. Or if you can live with MIUI then it's whole another set of arguments to be made. But considering you've used oxygen OS for around 2 years, it's likely you won't like MIUI at all.

If you are into gaming and especially emulators then its a no brainer. When using Dolphin my 5T struggled to maintain 60fps whereas 9T has no problems whatsoever.
P.s MiUi is not as bad as some people here make it sound like, give it a try you might like it

I see that people have different opinions on it, that comes from their different habits.
The specs are great and i think the phone can compete with flagships - with this price definitely (buy two of these or one from OnePlus?! ). Software is a thing that can be changed by custom roms and i think i will try MIUI, Lineage, PE and the Oxygen GSI on it and see what's best for me.

i do have 5T and 9T pro..overall i love both..but i like 9T more because it come with latest chipset and hardwere..but wait..after REALME X2 WILL BE launch worldwide..i will buy that device..coz realme x2 got better spec and good for the price..why not wait till realme x2?

I wouldn't buy Realme X2 Pro over Mi 9T pro. First they're entering Europe for the 1st time, 2nd their color os is a mwea.

I hope I'm in the right place to post/ask this. But I honestly don't know any better place to go to.
At the moment I am to decide between the Mi 8 (6/64GB) for 170 € and the Mi 9 Lite (6/128 GB) for 200 €.
I already ordered, received and set up the Mi8 and the good price for the Mi 9 Lite just appeared recently.
The Mi 8 definitely has a better performance due to the SD845 (vs SD710) and has WiFi MiMO, an OIS, as well as apt-X and costs 30 € less (at least for me). Likely due to its release date there also are way more ROMs and Mods available for the Mi8 already.
Mi 9 Lite on the other hand supports LTE Band28 (which will become more and more important in Germany), has better camera sensors, a bigger battery, an infrared blaster, SD card support, a drop notch, an audio jack and, well, in-screen fingerprint (which I guess is nice but not that important) and it was released about 1 year later which could lead to longer software support.
So there's very much points arguing for the Mi 9 Lite. But:
Does the premium SoC of the Mi 8 guarantee more updates over time then the Mi 9 lite?
Is the camera of the Mi 9 Lite really better than on the Mi 8 as OIS is missing?
Is the in-screen fingerprint more imprecise than fingerprint on the back?
Could apt-X also be applied to the Mi 9 Lite? (one day I read about it being implemented in LOS by default)

Not sure about Mi 8 but Mi 9 Lite has stunning display, it's the biggest selling point IMO. (Samsung's AMOLED)
And yes maybe Mi 8 has faster chip but SD710 is WAY more power efficient, with bigger battery it will make tremendous difference. And it's not that slow either.. (about 220k in Antutu)
Cant really speak for camera because i dont use it that much but the resulsts i have been getting are more than satisfactory (even at low lighting with night mode)

Referring to this post the Mi8 also comes with an Samsung AMOLED, though I can't find much other reliable information elsewhere that would support this statement. Phonearena seems to be the only specs listing website that states it, too, as being produced by Samsung. However it's my first AMOLED device and I therefore can't compare to others. I've declared to myself that my next phone definitely would be one for under 200 € and would have to come with an AMOLED screen, which now, thanks to the special offer for the Mi 9 Lite, is met by both devices.
Yeah the battery point is a powerful one. I get 1.5 days of battery lifetime at most with low usage while I got almost 3 days out of my Redmi Note 4 when I didn't use it much.
Also B-S-G - afaik the most popular developer for GCam ports - is developing the GCam specifically for the Mi8 (among other devices) which almost guarantees a most recent and working GCam version for it. But I only can tell that the image quality is way better than it was on my Redmi Note 4, which on the other side just would be very devastating if it wasn't.
It'd also be worth mentioning that due to the different vendors I'd have 2 years warranty for the Mi 8 (Amazon) but none to a maximum of one year for the Mi 9 Lite (Banggood).

In 1 month I got 3 random phone crashes /reboot.
I would probably go with mi 8.
what I can tell you about Mi 9 lite is : the screen is top , fingerprint on screen ( no need to turn your phone when on desk ) battery is xxl , microSD port , Irda port ( tv remote ) I use Nova rather than miui launcher and this phone is nearly perfect for what I do.

Let me start by saying that I think CC9/Mi9 lite is a missed opportunity for xiaomi. It was positioned a bit awkwardly for marketing. It's evidently not sold very well and if xda is any indication, community support is also fairly low.
Yet to me it is the most "all-rounded" phone from xiaomi in 2019 (nope, not 9t/9tPro, which are very popular), checking off all the marks for me: samsung oled, great cameras front (better than mi9) and back, beautiful build and design of the Mi9, SD card, headphone jack, big battery, good battery life, midrange prices, etc. To me it was nearly perfect (except perhaps a year old SoC instead of SD730), or as perfect as I expected from Xiaomi anyway.
Except the fact it doesn't have strong community support. I've got it about 3 weeks after its China release. I am still waiting for official pixel experience or any AOSP rom to have stable releases. I am stuck with MIUI variant roms which are stable but I personally crave pure android. That and the fact there isn't a really reliable working GCam support, nor do I know of one in development (please correct me if I'm wrong).
This makes a huge difference because I shoot a lot with the phone cameras. Right now with GCam, I get more technically impressive photos from a lower priced Redmi Note 7 than the oversaturated painting I get from Miui's own cameras, and that's from a technically inferior Samsung GM1 sensor.
As it stands now, it depends on your usage and preferences. I personally wouldn't mind the Mi8 myself, especially if it's cheaper, except they are no longer available in these parts of asia (sold out). I think Mi8's faults are that the 845 isn't as efficient, and the battery is smaller, resulting in less run time. Yet it IS a flagship, which means potentially better build, better parts (it has a LRA vibration motor vs cc9's cheaper rotary motor), world bands gsm (where cc9 has a more regional bands selection), and more community support. The camera is an IMX363, same as on pixel 3 and 3a, so it's no slouch: while it has lower resolution on paper, it really just skipped the need of marketing driven pixel binning by having larger pixels to begin with. (Personally I think the apparent race toward higher megapixels as a strategy for xiaomi is completely misguided if not deliberately misleading). Post processing would be what makes or breaks the results, and with mi8 you can get full GCam support. In fact with pixel experience rom and gcam, you'd probably get nearly identical pixel 3 experience for a bargain. While 4000mah battery would be nice, pixel3/3a does just fine with similarly small sized batteries and oled. So it may just come down to better optimization.
oh, the underscreen fingerprint sensor is just crappy and unreliable. There's a reason why it's not as widely adopted. It's not a miss if you have the capacitive ones instead.
I personally would love a well supported phone, so my pick today might become mi8. As much as I love the cc9/mi9lite, it coming onto the stage too late in the cycle after all bases are covered makes it a bit of an orphan when it comes to development. I don't personally use the headphone jack but I would miss the SD card slot. Screens are similar, brilliant Samsung OLED. In fact I think Mi8 was touted as one of the best displays from Xiaomi in terms of color accuracy. If you don't care as much about community support/aosp roms, and is content with MIUI and its camera app, then CC9 is really as good as they come this year. From the way the new xiaomi phone looks (redmi k30, cc9 pro, rumor of mi10), such thoughtful and balanced design is probably going to be a rarity in the up coming models.

Had I known that the CC9 has no Camera2 API Level 3 (only "full", which doesn't support all features making GCam development very limited), I'd probably have gone for the Mi 8. They were both at the same price when i bought the CC9, and though I enjoy having a bigger display and battery, most of the time I wonder if I'd be better off with smaller ones but Level 3 API (full support for GCam, which is important to me since I've come from a RN7 that took better pictures than the CC9), a way stronger processor and better build quality. The points that made me choose the CC9 instead were simply the teardrop notch as opposed to the huge forehead on the Mi8 and the bigger battery, as I use the phone to work on the street. Also it's a newer phone. But every now and then I question myself if I made the right decision. You'll have to weigh these points and see what is most important to you and your way of using the phone. But either one you take, you'll be making a tradeoff. Think it through patiently so you don't regret it later.

Thanks for your input! I have to say that just recently a colleague ordered and received his Mi 9 Lite and the In-Screen-Fingerprint seems to be quite fast and accurate at first glance.
Camera on the Mi 8 using GCam is amazing. Especially when compared to my old Redmi Note 4.
And as this is my first Amoled it also looks amazing, but I have no comparison.
I also face sudden SystemUI reboots on HavocOS on my Mi8 about once every two to three days.

Wow! Thank you so much for your efforts taking time to write such an detailed and honest opinion.
Talking about the Pixel Experience ROM I took a look into that and counting from release date of the Mi 8 it took about 6 months for a stable and official build to be released (May 2018 -> 25th Nov 2018).
Depending on the Mi 9 lite being released in Sep 2019 one could give it 2-3 months from now on compared to the time it took the Mi 8 to get some Official ROM support. As far as I can see the first unofficial custom ROMS for the Mi8 dropped in Oct 2018 which is 5 months after release whereas the first unofficial LOS build appeared just recently for the Mi 9 Lite. Therefore it only took the Mi 9 Lite 4 months to receive its first unofficial LOS build. So it looks like the support and development isn't that bad.
But yet it's still hard to tell how much (xda community) popularity the phone could get in the near future.
For me the battery life is one of the most convincing reason to buy. It was so satisfying to reach up to 3 days with my Redmi Note 4 without having to charge it once. I know this depends on usage but I always got at least 2 days if I wasn't at home gaming on the phone all the day.
Oh and yeah - you name it - the feeling of the vibration motor is so smooth and from the first moment on gives a so much more premium feeling than I experienced with the one in my Redmi Note 4. And yes the fingerprint scanner on the mi 8 is very fast and accurate.

Interesting point. But isn't this just depending on the ROM/software or is this a hardware issue?
I already somehow adapted to the forehead notch. I found it quite ugly the first to days. And it still is. The teardrop notch definitely is way more attractive. I guess it's missing the IR front camera, though (not that it would be that important/useful). And are the speaker, proximity sensor as well as light sensor positioned under the Amoled somewhere?
