How good is V40 main camera with GCAM vs pixel cameras? - LG V40 Questions & Answers

Just curious what users here think of the V40 with GCAM using HDR+ say vs Pixel Cameras like 2,3 etc?
Usually properly implemented GCAM on a phone drastically improves detail on the majority of phones that do not have stacking algorithm. How is it on the V40?
I am purely curious about just overall quality of still photo in good light using GCAM....or raw.
I am well aware that the V40 stock jpegs have typical stock jpeg issues that crush detail related to sharpening and noise reduction.
Also curious if 7.X gcam gives any better results than 6.X for the V40. And is i true that 7 requires 10 and root?
Thanks much.

Pixel binning is an issue with the camera, even if you use a GCAM port. That is why detail is lost when cropped. The GCAM is great for dim or night shots though.

Thanks for reply. As I understand pixel binning is only when super bright mode is on for the V40 for lower light scenes. Does Gcam somehow always use this mode on the V40? say in like bright scenes outdoors?

When compared to the stock camera, all GCAM does is process HDR differently, - in its own proprietary way. It's just a post-processing difference. Clarity, detail, pixel-binning issues still exist. I use GCAM because of its better color reproduction for afternoon & night shots. For full sun, I use the stock camera.

Here are 2 rooftop shots of my oak tree at sunset. Stock camera vs. GCAM. Notice the superior color saturation of the GCAM, with more pop in greens and blues. When zoomed the detail is the same, - you just have better post-processing.

Nope, GCam gives more details. And use v7.

I had a great Gcam port on my Tmo LG V40 that used all 5 cameras on Pie. With the upgrade to A10 it no longer worked correctly. Anyone know of a good version that doesn't require root?

Gcam_6.1.021_Advanced_V1.6-Fu24_5Lens-02b.apk
Ram_Enh-P3-final_fu-24_5lens_02b.xml
find the apk on xda here, dont remember where. you have to add a folder gcam and add the xml file into, when you load the apk, open it tap on the black portion near the shutter button then choose the xml file.

This is the one I currently use on A10, which only utilizes the ultra wide and main cameras:
Gcam_6.1.021_Advanced_V1.6-Fu24_5Lens-02b.apk
The one I used on Pie that utilized all of the cameras was formatted by TinNeun.

Thanks! I found both no problem. They work fine, I modified the sharpness (turned down) and increased stacking number to my liking.. Thanks!. If you like the values for easy mod and test I can share.
All the versions of 6 I tried seem to have aggressive sharpening going on. Looks good now to me.

Android 10 GCAM
The Android 10 version has the "A10" in the file name suffix. I have the T-Mobile V40 also, with Android 10. Here is the version I'm using:

Color saturation seems nice and all. But how realistic it is? I mean, right pic looks dim but that can be adjusted with manual control. The one on the left looks great. But that cloud looks like Pixar put it there. So perhaps too much saturation in some areas? Then again that right does look dull as...

All 5 cameras works well ? No lags or other issues ?
Many thanks in advance !!

Yes, it DOES work with all 5 cameras. But to prevent lag you need to make these adjustments:
After installation, go to Settings and make these changes:
1) Set HDR+ Parameters to "5". (Higher values produce better pics but slow down processing time).
2) Go to Settings > Mod Settings > Advanced > FIX. Turn on "Buffer Fix".
3) Go to Settings > Mod Settings > Advanced > FIX. Set Viewfinder Format to "JPEG".
4) Go to Settings > Photo > Advanced > Final JPG quality. Set to "100%".
The MOST IMPORTANT change is to turn on Buffer Fix. But in general, I've made these changes with other GCAM apks that I've experimented with for good success and no lag. I like Fu24's apk because it was tailored for wide cam phones like the V40. You can even alter the switching method between the cameras by going into Settings > Photo > Aux Camera Switch Method.

I am using these down below, just made changes from above post, and before and after the setting change, gcam would crash, when i try to activate wide angle.
for those using gcam on v40 with android 10, what version and file and setting changed are you using?
thanks
f.celsoazevedo.com/file/cfil...ens-02-A10.apk
Ram_Enh-P3-final_fu-24_5lens_02b.xml

If your app is crashing, you'll need to wipe its data so that you can reopen it with the default settings. Looking at Fu24's GCAM thread, it looks like the telephoto camera is not compatible in Android 10. Only the main and wide angle cameras are. Here is the link to the thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-6/themes/google-camera-mod-switchable-telephoto-t3859831
On the 1st post, he says, "To use the second back camera, if the phone does not even report all cameras through the Camera2 API ( Includes second back camera ) (use Camera2Test app to verify your device info). You need to install the zoomfix-v3.1 or hal3_eis_zoomfix-v3.1 module."
I tried the Camera2Test app and discovered that the telephoto camera is not on the Camera2 API. I think the modules he mentioned can only be installed on rooted phones. My T-Mobile V40 is not rooted, so I've decided to disable the telephoto camera (AUX 2) so that the GCAM app does not crash. I'm able to switch between the Main and Wide Angle (AUX 1) with no problem. Here is the link to the GCAM apk I'm using:
https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/cfiles/gcm1/Gcam_6.1.021_Advanced_V1.6-Fu24_5Lens-02b6.5-A10.apk
I've also attached my own XML file of the GCAM Settings used with the above-mentioned apk. To use this XML file, you need to create a folder "Gcam" in internal storage, then place the XML file in it. Then launch GCAM and double-tap the black area around the viewfinder button. You'll see a pop-up window to choose the XML file.
Hope this info helps

Hello there. To turn on Buffer Fix, means you must be rooted and have TWRP and magisk installed? Is there no other way to use gcam on V40 Android 10 without the buffer fix module installed coz its too many hassle just to get the buffer fix.

(Fully working) V5 (20120918) Camera Mod - for better pictures and low light videos

Updated to version V5
Changes:
Photos: No over exposure. (0 ev)
Videos: As always videos look good in low light (more or less equal to the brightness you have when taking photos)
Install instructions same as below.
Links:
ADB: http://www.mediafire.com/?z0idch09sgl5r20
CWM: http://www.mediafire.com/?spiv8o9lav017t8
I see more than 60 downloads of v4 but surprisingly no feedback/report from anyone whether you see any difference with this mod. I ll not be able to improve this any further without feedback guys.
--
Please find the updated version V4.
I had to change lot of variables and also had to mod cameraapp to get this working. I used somboons camera apk and his script so you ll have sound off mod in this one. Thanks to somboons.
Also thanks to Somboons for creating automation scripts for us.
Prerequisites
Deodexed rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871858
Firmware v10F
Changes you should notice:
Improvement in video brightness in low lights
Reduced over exposure (only +0.1ev)
Improvement in video quality when making video calls like over Skype/Gtalk
I am also trying to improve sharpness by changing the metering mode and increasing the meter spot size (feedback is important)
Reduced saturation (it helps improving video quality in low lights)
INSTALLATION
Method 1:
Flash via CWM.
1. Download CWM_Install_Camera_mod_V4.zip
2. Flash it via recovery
Method2:
1. Download the adb_camera_mod_vV4.rar file
2. Extract it
3.run the script
4. let it reboot
5. It also makes backup of the original files so, if you dont like it you can always revert (backup will be at external_sd/backupcamera).
These methods are tested and confirmed working.
Do let me know your feedback.
I really really spent lot of hours understanding and modifying these files. So i dont mind small donation to motivate me to work more on such mods. Thanks.

Hi friends,
Finally after 3 days of continuous work (spent at least 20-30 hours on this project) I managed to make a breakthrough in this brightness issue when shooting in semi lit conditions. As mentioned earlier, problem is not with the camera app but with the drivers itself. For some reason LG chose not to support higher ISO or proper adjustment of exposure/brightness/contrast for low light settings (it was the same case on LG optimus 2x as well).
Attached is the modifed camera.tegra.so (camera driver for our LG 4X). You need to copy it to /system/lib/hw using Root Explorer or similar application and set permissions. When possible I ll make flashable zip or some other automated way for everyone and also comparison videos. If anyone can help me with that i'd really appreciate it.
Benefits of this new driver:
1. Improved image quality. You ll see size of the photos will be about 2.5mb (instead of 1mb). You ll also notice ISO values in low light photos hitting around ISO2500 (even i didnt know that this camera can support such high ISO).
2. Improved visibility in the video recording in low light conditions.
3. Improved bit rate in video recording upto 25mbit/s.
4. Constant 25-30FPS in video recording.
Drawbacks:
For video recording I increased the brightness level twice as much. So dont use highest brightness when taking videos in dark. If you do so you ll see very high noise.
Comparision videos in both indoor and outdoor:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/20rxmifrqzxjgby/dzY4BZuN6E (obviously difference is obvious in indoor than outdoor).
Installation:
1. Download and extract LG4x_working_camera_driver_20120830.rar
2. Using Root Explorer, go to /system/lib/hw and backup existing camera.tegra.so to camera.tegra.so.bak
3. Copy camera.tegra.so to /system/lib/hw
4. Set rw-r--r- permissions
Reboot.
When you open native camera app you should see the improvements.
Let me know in case you have any questions.
Change log:
V3 : 20120901
a. Reverted to automatic saturation as pictures look better with unmodified one
b. Reduced exposure to +0.3ev so that picutres dont look over exposed yet we ll see some improvement in videos. Should you need higher brightness in videos please use +/- correction. (hard to please all, right?)
c. Reworked on sharpness. Pictures/Videos look much sharper now.
V2 (enhancements): 20120830
a. Optimised saturation. Pictures in bright light looks colorful and in low light reduced noise
b. Reduced over exposure on pictures taken in bright sunlight
c. Improved sharpness of the pictures by edge enhancement (read here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edge_enhancement)
V2 (no enhancements):
No saturation or sharpness enhancements but just reduced over exposure.
Also uploaded original file in case you forget backing up
As always you are responsible for the changes you make on your device. I dont want you to complain about phone transforming into aliens or turning to paper weights if you use my mods. I am happy to help if I can.
Hope you enjoy my mods. Looking forward for your feedback.
PS: One should not experience any bootloops or any major issues with this mod. So dont be worried

In this thread I am seeking help to make LG 4X camera better. If you dont know what you are doing then thread is not for you, move on!!!
As I am really frustrated with the dark videos in a semi lit room and as there no other camera apps available to help get better videos I decided to mod the camera myself. I reached a point where I need help from experts here at XDA
Camera dark light problem video samples: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/r0xdgyo34oyhlq0/pPF8M8VNcj
To make it clear, problem lies with camera driver not the camera app (and thats the reason why other apps arent of much help). Camera driver is /system/lib/hw/tegra.camera.so
I took drivers from OneX and Asus Transformer Prime as an example (btw Asus prime takes amazing photos/videos even in low light) and modded the driver. Problem lies with ISO settings. Our dear LG 4X doesnt use ISO settings for video recording and seems it cannot change FPS on the fly when it is low light (still tries to record at 30 fps). High ISO and high fps causes dark videos. Read here: http://www.izzyvideo.com/low-light-video/
Now I managed to eliminate dark videos in low light successfully but
1. while taking video view finder is tilted by 90 degrees regardless of what direction you hold it. (see attachment camera.tegra_titled.rar)
or
2. It takes only photos but no videos. (see attachment camera.tegra_partlyWorking.rar)
You ll need HexEdit (http://www.hexedit.com/) to mod these files.
Just extract either of the two attachments and copy the tegra.camera.so file to /system/lib/hw and set permissions. Just backup old one before you do this thou. To save the noobs from flashing this file I put it in rar but not zip.
If anyone wants to know what changes i made, how I made please PM or write below and I can explain. Hoping for helping hands here to solve camera issue

Iam trying V2Enhancements.zip and sotck camera.tegra.so V10F firmware. Today had a lot of tests with the standard and your driver. When shooting, I did not use the touch focus, the camera will chose the exposure.
Empirically found that your driver all pictures differ by about +0.5 +0.7 EV, that is, they are brighter in any light.
Just seemed to me that the video was a little antsy (laggy) in 1080, maybe it isch due to increased bit rate, but I have not yet fully tested. And it is strange that one minute of recording goes about the same size in megabytes on your and the usual driver.
Sorry for google-english.

I have testing this version and found why photos is overexposed. See screenshot. Modded version add +0.4EV in each shot.
I also checked the video. In low light the video was better. Bitrate instead 7mbit was 10 megabits. However, all the videos began to appear a significant head (lag) when the camera is moving. Perhaps this is due to increasing the bitrate. For video, I use the internal memory and not the memory card.

Thanks. But i couldnt find a way to increase only video brightness without affecting exposure on image. I use Samsung 32gb class 10 microsd card and probably thats why I havent noticed any difference. I ll check again and come back. But in general night mode records slow videos than in broad day light
Btw where it the screenshot?

To reenable ZSL make sure Variable Shutter is set to off
For EX: I can set aqua scene, set the variable shutter to 1 sec and turn burst to 5. It will shoot 5 aqua sslow shutter images in a row without touching it
EX 2: Turn burst to 5 and use HDR. Now it will take 5 HDR pics without you touching it!
Once again, Thank @infinityplus!
V21
Added more icons for Saturation, Contrast, and Sharpness
Change Second pie menu icon @infinityplus
moved and redid ISO icons
Focus mode added to the second menu
V22
Remove Focus mode
Fix force close
Notes for Color OS Camera VS CameraNext
Color OS Denoise default is off <> CameraNext Denoise default is on
This is why the CameraNext pictures are smaller. Denoise compresses them, thus the smaller file size. I would recommend turning this off for day shots. On night shots, I highly recommend turning it on, otherwise the pictures will look like garbage with scattered RGB artifacts. This is why Color OS cam provides slightly better detail in night shots
Color OS Contrast and Saturation Values are 5 <> CameraNextMod default is 4 and 6 respectively
Color OS cam has three modes (low, mid, and high). The numeric values are 0,5, and 10. CameraNextMod values ranges from 0-10. I tried to tune it for color accuracy, Your results may vary.
Color OS Auto Exposure is set to Center-Weighted <> CameraNextMod Auto Exposure is set to Frame-average
Color OS Cam by @BOOTMGR here
Color OS Cam mod port by @infinityplus here
Bugs
Shutter option shows up twice but one is disabled
Shutter option will reset to auto if you open and close the settings
All previous Stock CameraNext Bugs
To use it, you must change the scene mode to "slow shutter" and then select the speed. If you don't have this scene available, then your camera does not support it and won't work.
WARNING
THE ZIP FILES ARE ONLY FOR THE ONEPLUS ONE DEVICE. The CM12 zip WILL CAUSE A BOOTLOOP if flashed on CM11 or CM11s due to the panorama fix and vice versa. IF STUCK IN A BOOTLOOP, FLASH THE CORRECT VERSION FOR YOUR DEVICE OR DIRTY FLASH YOUR ROM. DO NOT FLASH THE WRONG ZIP. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DO NOT READ OR MESS UP YOUR PHONE.
NOTES
Starting from V6 onward, if you're running a modified version of the mixer_paths.xml file, you'll have to remodify it. If you are using one of my audio mods, I'll update them to into the camera fix. Just flash the new file and you're good to go.

Things I can do
Remove scenes
Rearrange settings
Unlock hidden options
Things I can't do
Modify the ViewFinder
Change the framerate for 1080p to use 60
make the an option for 240 fps
To remove camera sounds
go into /system/media/audio/ui
delete camera_click.ogg
delete camera_focus.ogg
delete VideoRecord.ogg
To remove the mod completely
To completely uninstall the zip file, you have to delete 90-CamSettings from
/system/addon.d/
Then you have to uninstall the app by using titanium backup or deleting CameraNextMod.apk from /system/app
Finally to get rid of the autofocus click fix and increased bitrate, just dirty flash your ROM.

Wow brilliant. Looks fantastic buddy! Will give it a try
Thanks for improving my preferred camera app.
Do you think is feasible to have a better noise suppression algorithm? That is the biggest difference I noticed when tried Color OS camera app.
Looks amazing! Thanks for the effort! Would it be possible to change the aspect ratio of the viewfinder? Currently it is a little zoomed in so the actual captured image is actually wider than what is being shown on the viewfinder
What an idea ! Well done :highfive:
How did you manage to take such a clear picture with this speed of shutter ? You have a tripod or something ?

I am not sure if I'll be able to do that because this only required a simple edit in the XML files but I'll look into it.

Nice work.Thank you for the mod and hope to see more updates.
I clear data on the original camera next install, uninstalled and then installed your modded version but I still have a Max of 8 seconds on show slow shutter settings. Any ideas how to fix?
Edit: Nevermind, checked again and I now have two separate options for slow shutter speed, one with a Max of 8 the other with a Max of 32,i guess the first is ignored?

It's a bug of cm. Mine crashes when I press panorama button. (Nightly 10/01)
Okay thanks to confirm! The panorama mode from camera next is not so good as the one from the Google camera, so it's not a big thing...
Amazing! been waiting for someone to do a camera mod. You should keep up the good work and maybe up the video bitrate in the future
It says app not installed when I tried to install it. What am I doing wrong?
I'm selecting 32 sec option in the 2nd shutter menu but phone is still taking pics with 8sec shutter delay, am I doing something wrong?

Question A working GCam for Motorola Edge 20 Pro?

Hi,
I recently bought this device, but unfortunately, compared to my Pixel 3a, it's camera is really bad! Can someone please help me with a trustworthy GCam apk that works for it? Thank you!
(There are quite a few websites for it but I don't know which ones to trust)
There is another thread here, but try BSG or hasli's LMC with modifications.
I had several variants installed until now, but by far the best and most functional is the last iteration of nikita gcam 8.3. I will try to put the link here. (video in zoom cam still not working)
Nikita: NGCam_8.2.300-v1.4
Download NGCam_8.2.300-v1.4 by Nikita.

@peterdoherty : Did you also try some config with it? If yes, can you please let me know which one worked the best? I tried the Nikita one as well, but the photos are a little less bright by default...

Just some tweeks by trial and error. I think the darkness was caused by enabling auto sunset or auto twilight (i don't remember the name exactly, it was a little icon above the camera selector toggle). As soon as i disable it the pics were considerably brighter.
Also I enabled and renamed the wide and zoom camera, set auto night mode. And that's about it.
Just trying a new variant. Looks even better and works with video for zoom cam. Also nightmode seems to be working better.
BSG: MGC_8.1.101_A9_GV1zfix

I made a config for the Edge 20 Pro. I reduced the contrast and sharpness while retaining detail. Also reduced HDR overall lightness.
The final image is brighter.
Edit: new config as of Dec 4
My updated config for Edge 20 Pro.
- well balanced exposure for all cameras
- reduced sharpness
- tweaked HDR and Expo Map to LUT
What you see in the viewfinder is the exact image you expect in post processing.

But if you meant what I use to update the config file, you just need to open Gcam and there is a settings under 'Modules'.
You need to manually update the config per lens (front, ultrawide, main and periscope).

Can you please add some examples with this config?
New config file.
This file is to lift detail in shadows especially when you are taking your subject against the light. Also good for portraits since Pixel's algorithm is too harsh on skin tones (make you look older than in real life).
Is there any way to activate the macro mode on the bsg version?

Dear all friend i have version cam is working good but it is working one camera
can try this link Gcam
i hope many version gcam is good for Edge 20 Pro
sorry because im bad english
After much testing and tweeking, including the gcam versions given here, I have to say that my absolute best gcam version is Hasli.
Currently working with version Helena R6, link for download is here: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-hasli/.
My very much tweaked config, latest version is shared here.
Every cam and many options are tweaked, including white balance, noise reduction, detail preservation etc.
I am still not 100% satisfied with white balance in all circumstances, but overall best so far.
White dots in ultrawide cam are somewhat corrected with luma noise reduction - much better but not gone.
The only problem I have with this version is with selfi cam - there is a color bleed between surfaces, see the example attached. But this is the problem I have with every gcam version 8 I have tried (version 7.3 does not have this issue). I cannot figure out how to fix it.
I hope someone else will test this cam and config
There are still many options I did not try and there is no good guide for this version, and no community to discuss problems and tweaks (the Telegram group I have has locked comments).
It is true - Motorola did not do the best job with this phone's camera and gcam cannot fix everything but I think this makes it usable.
Happy Holidays!

I have one last question if you don't mind, which one is more stable, and support multiple languages, this one or pixelplusUI, I have hope that AUX will be fixed, Thank you for your time and effort in porting all this ROMs to this device

I don't suppose we have PPUI based on Android 13.
I installed this rom and found two annoying issues,
1. Charging is too slow, like I am using 5 watt charger
2. Navigation back button not working after sometimes, and then started working again by itself.
I flashed this rom with OFR but when I tried to switch to other rom it didn't let me switch, some of you may encounter same issue, recovery will show "unable to mount data"
For fix this, I switched to TWRP beta recovery and remove my password (pin, pattern) then go to recovery, and fix permission and change the internal storage format to extFat or any other settings, then I was able to mount data, to clean install other roms.
Hope you found this useful.
And 1 last thing.... On Netflix HDR is not enabled like other roms. Please add this in upcoming updates

No complaints about fast charging. I suggest using a proper battery meter to measure while plugged-in like "Ampere".

Netflix HDR is not available by default in R6P. PE is one of the ROMs that doesn't allow spoofing of such things. Though I have HDR enabled from my side as you'll be able to tell if you play HDR on YT.
Thanks for the feedback. Do report back with the charging issue along with screenshots from Ampere if possible.

Installed. Bugs with camera. Camera not included, download any other app (but Google Camera from Market crash every time).
Camera have only simple photo, video and frontal. Camera also cant shot with flash. The flash works, but the photo and flash do not shot at the same time and the flash effect is not visible in the photo.
I don't think the camera "works". Please, note in the header how exactly the camera "works".
Battery life is normal. My smartphone began to work much better, than on the stock firmware, but most likely due to a factory reset. In any case, it looks pretty than RUI 2.0.
Camera application freezes when video is stopped in FHD. When press pause it crashes.

thank you, this rom is good for me, of course not that perfect, but it is damn good, especially at saving my battery.
I tried my best to summary about this rom (current build). TL;DR!
- I don't know it is due to software or hardware. When i use 60hz refresh rate, scrolling is kinda "tearing" (maybe not the correct term), and not smooth compared by my previous phone (Poco F1) with 60hz screen.
45hz looks even better, of course it is not smooth due to its nature, but it is less "tearing". (Maybe this is due to my screen i mentioned at my last paragraph)
- Refresh Rate settings i set is 60hz minimum and maximum, but when i played Brawl Stars (at match, not the dashboard), the refresh rate reduced to 45hz, also 45 fps when i checked. I know this game can run at 60fps, because my previous phone
- I also tried Project Elixir Android 13, i really miss the sound profile/switcher button in quick settings. I don't know Android 13 is really trying to hide this button or not.
- I also miss my WiFi and Mobile Data button independently.
- In the battery saver settings should mention, about refresh rate that will be arranged to 60hz maximum.
- For me, this rom is really good saving my battery compared by Project Elixir (current build). Even in the standby state, it is about one and half better.
- Color style is presets now, compared by Android 12 that i able to fully customize the coloring.
- I hope i can hide the bottom bar of gesture navigation. Personally, the bar is unnecessary.

Can someone enlighten me. i bought this phone recently and immediately switch to custom rom.
Is it because the screen have been replaced before? Both top and left offset are cutted by about 1 pixel, because i turned on "Show layout bounds" at developer settings, i really can't see both top and left border. I tried to screenshot and zoom out, of course it is there and because of this, the punch hole with the top / notification is not match of course.

Themes / Apps / Mods Gcam for X90 Pro+

I think this deserves it's own thread.
Installation description and download link is given here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...vivo-system-app-ver-2-5.4533545/post-87946927
Right now only the version 8.4 is working - though 8.7 is already published.
It's a tiny bit slower - especially in the dark vs the vivo camera. The colors are very different - in general I feel in the dark Vivo is more correct - but gcam has the advantage of no auto night mode mwhich means you have to use Sports mode (which isn't perfect at night as it's exposure is very quick).
In general pictures - especially on the zoom lens are a bit sharper vs stock camera. On the zoom lens at 10x and above it's significantly sharper. I would say at 20x the Google camera manages 20-30% more detail minimum and avoids the oversharpening that the Vivo camera does (do not pixel peep at the 10x or 20x pictures of the vivo camera - it's mostly awful when the vivo AI for example detects text - but much much batter on the gcam).
However I think we somehow miss the HDR - or am I top stupid to find it? Could it be that because we need to select Pixel 2 - we only get features that are available on Pixel 2?
I'll attach a screenshot showing the missing HDR and the difference in zoom detail.
It's a bit annoying that at night the gcam sometimes is way off on white balance at night. With way off I mean way off. Otherwise I prefer it over the stock camera for pictures (I didn't really take videos so cannot comment there).
The really nice thing about gcam is how you can select each lens and force it to be used - unlike Vivo that especially at night does not use the 2x camera - and sometimes not even the periscope. All lenses work.
Edit - I found the HDR mode. You can enable it by clicking on HDR in the Auto white balance row - then another row pops up with HDR settings (off, on, enhanced).

Missing HDR+
Details in gcam - 1 level above the stock camera.
It's noisier but the colors are more accurate on the vivo stock camera except the dark green which is better on gcam. The orange in the middle in reality is a tiny bit darker than in the Vivo pic. But here it appears red. Besides that it's actually hard to tell which color is more accurate. There are many examples which I will not show here however - where the gcam was way off indoors at LED lightbulb light.
Details on stock camera below
Oh yeah - I did check that the Vivo here choses the periscope camera. Cropping into the main lens is a bit worse. Let me attach a sample too (taken with gcam as I cannot force the vivo stock camera to use the main lens). I really do feel Vivo should have gone for 4.5x zoom on the periscope camera. Up to 4x the main sensor doesn't do too badly. And just for the sake of it I will take one with the 2x cam too - I think the 2x is worst at zoom. It's a portrait camera only.
Main sensor (10x zoom is max so it's s but bigger than the other ones)
2x sensor.
Actually - well the 2x sensor does capture more detail than a crop into the pixel binned main sensor (or is gcam going into the unbinned sensor? But it's clear the lens of the 2x is too slow / surface too small so it suffers here at roomlight and is really really noisy.
@extremecarver Could you change thread title to Themes/ Apps/ Mods. I think is better than "Question"
done
Btw, the gcam from BSG version 8.7 (current) is also compatible.
Just if you mess up a setting you have to reinstall. Not sure why, changing the setting back doesn't help. It seems to have better colors on first try, but resolution identical to stock camera...
It's bad you cannot install BSG and bigkaka in parallel. It gives me an error notice when I try to do so

If you are trying to install 2 mods that have the same signature (Snapcam for example), it's normal that it doesn't work.
I know in the other thread I stated that SNAPCAM package is recommended for Vivo/Oppo/OnePlus devices because it allows access to all camera lenses, however it looks like something has changed for the better because I'm currently using the com.agc.cam signature for the AGC GCam, and all lenses are recognized without issues.
In short, if you want to have both BSG GCam and Big Kaka AGC ,
Download the BSG version that has Snapcam signature (others like com.android.mgc could possibly work as well, it's just that I haven't tested them):
BSG: MGC_8.7.250_A11_V6
Download MGC_8.7.250_A11_V6 by BSG.
www.celsoazevedo.com
And for AGC, download the one that's on top (com.agc.cam)
BigKaka: AGC8.4.300_V9.3
Download AGC8.4.300_V9.3 by BigKaka.
www.celsoazevedo.com
IMPORTANT FOR AGC USERS:
Noise models for our X90 Pro+ have been submitted by user Viktor. The .c files can be imported in AGC settings. BSG doesn't have this feature.
If you don't know what this stuff is, you can read on the topic here https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/morgenman/noise-modeller-how-to/
Download noise models for all 4 back cameras here: https://drive.google.com/drive/fold...rIYRBKKq_6NlufPwrgGQMNXkbNJA-OInawB64cO9U9zSJ
the models can be imported in
Lens settings > choose lens (Main 1x, Ultrawide 0.6x, Tele 2.2x, Tele 3.9x) > Noise model > and finally Import noise model
from my short testing, the OV64B tele benefits the most from the custom noise model.

"Auto switch of lens" should be disabled
Thanks for that info - However after I selected to show debug focus information in the gcam - now it seems something is broken/leftover. I rebooted, uninstalled, reinstalled, tried different versions - and now any version is crashing on boot.
In general my gcams would crash if I don't select Pixel 2 XL (Taimen) interface mode. Strangely this was not needed at the beginning.
Important things for setup and getting the colors much more accurate: - strangely this worked for all lenses -
In color transform - chose IMX989 Mi12US AGC
this changes the colors dramatically and makes them much more accurate (bigkaka). Clearly a proper color transform for Vivo x90 Pro+ would be evne better - but with that setting you get close to the vivo camera.
Then enable Auto-CT and put a slight offset of 1.1-1.3 on the CCT WB Offset.
If you prefer more vivid and contrast - similar to the Vivid mode on the stock camera - set WB-Intensity to 1.2
and WB Saturation to 1.2,
This gives in general contrast/white balance/saturation similar to the stock camera without the occassional comic look of the vivid mode. It's a bit in between Zeiss Natural Colors and Vivid.
CCT WB Correction and WB color space fix I ticked too - but could not notice much difference.
The google camera is much sharper, has better focus I feel, and especially if the light situation is difficult - it will produce much better pictures. With a caveat - the stock camera AI is better at making light sources/the sun smaller instead of overblowing them.
I kinda feel all that Zeiss T* coating seems like a bit of rubbish when you compare with gcam and with gcam it looks just like any other smartphone on light sources. Vivo in that field simply upped the AI (however maybe with the problem that the whole rest of the picture is worse). Clearly I feel Vivo camera is not that great at all. It's just the hardware that is good and of course as we don't have the perfect setup for gcam - Vivo camera is more consistent.
Bugs/shortcoming on the gcam:
1. No macro mode/no auto macro. The manual focus for me did not work. The minimum focus distance on the stock camera vs the gcam is about half.
2. The 2x portrait camera is kinda useless on the gcam. Because I cannot see one ounce of a difference by taking pictures in normal or portrait mode on the 2x lens.
3. Should have much more scene modes
4. Not strong on beauty effects. Basically there aren't any vs a vast selection on Vivo stock camera - however if you want those just rarely - use the vivo editor to increase eye size, smoothen skintones, change face shape and whatever. However say you often photograph your girlfriend who want's to look "beautiful" - especially Asian girlfriends - it's so much more convenient to find a setting that works good on the Vivo cam and just use it everytime. Well clearly here we get into the woohaa supermodel on picture vs average girl in real life terrain which is just so common in Asia.
5. I haven't really tried portraits yet - but I think portraits may be better on the Vivo camera in general.
6. If you use HDR instead of HDR enhanced - the sharpness is about the same as on the Vivo camera - however the spead is also the same and you have better fine tuning for pictures.
Overall right now (if I manage to get the camera running again) I feel like gcam is better for landscape, zoomed pictures, and night photos. The stock camera is better for everything else and switches lenses much faster - but severly lacks on color balance. Compared to gcam it's laughable to just have Zeiss and Vivid mode - and both aren't good at all.
When I say night pictures I mean pictures that look good. Not pictures that have detail in every shadow. Though actaully the gcam is only a little bit worse here vs the stock camera while making much more harmonic/beautiful/realistic pictures. Vivo night mode - sorry to say so, sucks for pictures. It's great as a night view machine (can be improved a bit by focussing on the lightest part of the picture at night).
Oh yeah - gcam night view is miles ahead on detail and sharpness vs vivo night mode when we take out the often/mostly too strong HDR of the vivo cam.
Besides the problems of crashing, slow lens switching, macro mode which all will be likely hard to fix - I feel the gcam has way more potential if we had a really good config/setup. and could replace the stock cam for everything but portrait right now.
Okay got it running again. I think it happened because the two versions influenced each other. If one Version is crashing it may somehow take the other one down too.
If there is a crash report, it makes it easier have a look at it in chrome and sometimes it has something useful. It said something about lense and then I disabled all lenses and re enabled one by one (starting with the 3.9) and somehow that fixed it .
bsg actually has a super macro mode - on bigkaka it's missing. If you mess up BSG, you need to do a full reset. Just changing the function that you set to break the app back - usually does not help. That's really strange.
I think easiest is to use stock camera and if your not happy then gcam. Because stock camera is faster and has better modes. For Landscape could default to bigkaka. At night it depends - it seems to be really a lottery which one takes better shots - and each setting is wildly different. Photos against sunlight - the stock camera seems to fail consistently. So that is a case for bigkaka.
We would need a proper auto white balance and color profile for bigkaka - then it could outclass the default camera quite easily. Missing this it's a bit hit or miss. That is if you need the better sharpness - go for bigkaka and HDR enhanced or night view.
How do you make BigKaka app work? It keeps crashing when I open it, I can go directly to settings, but if I open the camera normally, it crashes.
The BSG version works.
Start with a single Lens like 3.9x for debugging only. You may need to set interface as pixel 2 xl, and stream as sdk28. Then add other lenses, 1,3,4,,5,6 afterwards.
I think for bigkaka only snapcam and aweme version works. Try snapcam first. BSG for me also default version works. But yeah as soon as you set something wrong BSG needs full reset.

No, every package works perfectly. When you set something wrong in bsg you can access the settings with an "activity launcher" from Playstore. You can easily skip the viewfinder and jump directly into the settings. Change back what caused the crash and you are good to go.
On bigkaka you can do a long click and get right into settings without activity launcher. And yes on bigkaka restoring what caused the crash seems to work mostly. Not always but I think that is due to some instabilities. Some settings will launch if you ijstantly after opening click into the camera field, without it will crash.
Only on BSG you need activity launcher and for some settings restoring them doesn't help. Only way to get BSG working again then is to use activity launcher into settings and full reset (somehow there is something different from uninstall/reinstall vs reset - though I haven't found out what. Maybe some files are written outside of the app folder and therefore require reset via full reset menu point).
I guess this is somehow hardware related and the lenses remember what position was used or similar and with instable settings it can lead to crashes ...
I'm not even sure we can create a colour model that works universally. I guess the stock cams have quite a few models depending on the AI settings and what they detect regarding white balance. We would need a separate model of white balance for each kind of light type (except if having identical sensors to a Pixel model)
I also miss manual white balance on the gcams...
With manual I mean photographing a white sheet and then the camera adjust the white balance for getting the white sheet perfectly white. That's what you do on any kind of professional camera, especially in film when you want your actors to look the same skin tone no matter the lighting.
Oh yeah - and supposedly our cam features camera2 Level 3+ access - but if you set that on BSG it crashes. Only level 3 works sadly.

I have tried bsg once only. I prefer Shamim or LMC.
Could you please post screenshots of how you set up the lenses on LMC and shanmin? Both crash on me (got LMC to open with 2 lenses, then tried to add more now cannot even get into settings again even though I reset data and uninstalled/reinstalled).
On Shanmin I didn't even find the lens selection section (are you using 8.7 beta v3?)
Edit: found the bug on not being able to get into settings. First need or let it start and crash once...

I'm using the latest 8.4 version of Shamim right now because I have made a lib some months back which doesn't work in newer gcam versions.
Thanks, well I figured it out don't activate id5. But the preview in LMC in the dark is unusable. Too dark to focus except on main lens. Have to see a bit right now it's the worst but I haven't set up anything yet besides the order of the cameras. Right now at night it's really not useful yet.
By now I got them all running on default settings, but well I have to say details wise at night clear win for bigkaka, then stock camera in night mode , then auto night mode, then quite a bit worse LMC/Shanmin..
I'm not sure anymore which gcam mod had Pxl in its name - that one was quite good too quality wise - but I think it wasn't as stable. In general bigkaka seems to be quite unstable if you mess around in the settings. LMC/Shanmin accept much more settings - but the quality at night (didn't test during the day) is just horrible in comparison to AGC and stock. At first the stabilization doesn't seem to work in night mode - meaning lots of blur, second in HDR+ mode they are as good as the stock cam in normal mode - but bigkaka blows them out of the water so to say.
How much is this difference - actually quite a lot. While bigkaka in night mode will look sharp on a 4k screen in full size - it's hdr+ mode and the stock camera night mode are about sharp enough for 0.75 of the size. The normal mode on the vivo stock cam and the HDR simple mode are about the same at 0.5 the size - wile LMC and Shanmin can only fill 0.4 of the screen while still looking sharp enough.
bigkaka the big problem is auto white balance - not sure about LMC/Shanmin here. They seem quite similar but I haven't tested in many locations yet.
I didn't get Shanmin 8.7 to run, maybe that one is much sharper. It seems to be quite different from the 8.4 version. The strange thing is - settings that crash one mod, will run fine in another . Sometimes it will only crash after stopping the app and restarting - or similar. It's really frustrating if the app crashes to find out what causes it.
I miss a high resolution mode on bigkaka - it doesn't seem to exist. However the high resolution mode in LMC is pretty strange too - it takes pictures at half the sensor resolution (instead of default 1/4). Clearly this will only matter under very good light. Roomlight 10MP is plenty big, at night well 5MP would likely easily cut it.
I will not play with RAW before I get the jpg somehow better than stock. I still don't understand why bigkaka is soo much sharper vs the other gcam mods.
If bigkaka would not be so unreliable on colors it would be the clearly best choice.
So let's make things more interesting for our device.
Vivo already makes an excellent job controling the lights so whenever theres artificial lights or HDR scenes involved it's the best to use Stock.
But it lacks on textures and details sometimes.
That's why we've been working on GCam to make our experience even better.

I really prefer AGC gcam (except for sunsets or zoom lens in low light where AGC fails often).
