Recents with 3rd party launchers in DP4? - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Has anyone managed to open the recents menu from the home screen of 3rd party launchers like nova or lawnchair on DP4? I know 3rd party launchers don't support gestures since Android 10, but even if I set some other shortcut for opening the recents menu or 3 button navigation, it simply doesn't open or crashes the Pixel Launcher. Also, recents menu can be opened (only while using the gestures) from any other app except the homescreen of 3rd party launcher without any problem. Any workaround?

Just wanted to inform all that this problem is now gone with Beta 1. I'm using Nova as default launcher with 3 button navigation. Recents working fine now.

Third party launchers and 4xl gestures

I read several days ago about how the pixel 4/4xl already allows third party launchers to use the native gestures.
I also read that you need to have gestures enabled in order to utilize the new google assistant.
My question is has anyone that has received their new pixel used nova launcher (my all-time fave), enabled native gestures and was able to utilize the new google assistant?
My new 4xl is on a truck for delivery today and I'm pretty excited.
I'm coming from the 3xl so I know it's not a huge upgrade, but I think there's enough to make me happy with the decision.
TIA
It seems that third party launchers aren't compatible with the native gestures. I prefer Nova Launcher as well, but when I use the native gestures to return home I get switched back to the stock launcher.
So what I've ended up doing is go with the button navigation and configured Fluid Navigation Gestures to mimic the default gesture behaviour and hide the button navigation bar. It's been working great so far and Assistant still seems to be working.
Well, that's disappointing.
I'm certainly not interested in a third party gestures app in addition to a third party launcher.
Hopefully nova can update their app so I can use the native gestures while utilizing the new google assistant.
The new assistant is supposed to be awesome, so if nova can't do it right now, I'll be forced to stick with the pixel launcher, which would also be a little disappointing but would be necessary as I value the new assistant more at this point.
Thanks for the response.

Yeah ideally I'd rather not have to install additional programs if I can avoid it, but there was a notice within the Nova Launcher app saying it's beyond their control.
Anyway, maybe things might change when you receive your phone so no harm trying out for yourself. At least the stock launcher is still pretty decent.

Google gestures work fine with nova. You just have to set nova or whatever launcher as your default launcher. It won't switch back to stock launcher on home swipe
So, have you actually done this and, more importantly, does the new assistant work with nova as your launcher?

Hmm...I stand corrected. Not sure why it didn't work when I tried earlier even though I specified Nova as my default, but thanks!
Thanks.
I know I did a duplicate post in the 4 and 4xl forums and appreciate the quick responses.
This is great news and I had not seen this particular question asked anywhere.
Good luck to all!

I tried to use Nova with the new gestures on my Pixel 3 but Nova said that they can't support the new gestures due to Google not making it compatible with 3rd party launchers. Didn't try it on my pixel 4.
Maybe I missed something, how did you get it to work?
I switched to Nova as default and it worked fine. However, the smooth new app animations do not work or look like the pixel launcher animations. System animation in Nova is just the slide.

I had to set it to 3 button navigation, hit home and set nova the default launcher, then re-enable gesture nav. But it is working perfectly for me.
I'm using Nova and the gestures are working fine.
Only thing is can't get rid of the line on the bottom of the home page.

Have you had any issues at all with Action Launcher? I tried using it and certain apps seemed to get stuck. It was very weird, like the app screen got set as the home screen - I could long press on the app screen and make home screen things happen. But I never could get back to actual home screen. I had to reboot.

I did not notice this, but I'm currently using Nova. I do know that you need to actually set the launcher as your default through the settings menu rather than through the launcher. That's the only way I could get it to reliably work.

Applock Feature?

I have one simple question.
Is this app lock feature tied to asus launcher or system???
What happens if i use third party launcher?? Do i loose applock feature if i use third party auncher and reset asus launcher and disable it??
Thinking of purchasing nova launcher. so asking.
Help will be appreciated.
Lil Workaround required
Yes, there is an app lock feature. If you are using a third party launcher it seems the feature can't be accessed directly BUT it can still be used. If you quickly switch to your Asus launcher in settings you then long press on the home screen, hit "preferences" in the bottom corner then "AppLock" you can then lock apps. Once that is done simply go back to your desired launcher and the selected apps will require a password/finger print to access.
Kinda silly it can't be accessed via the 3rd party launcher but considering how little I need to go in and lock new apps, its not a terrible work around. Nova launcher is worth it.

Question Nova launcher with gestures navigation

As some of you know you can't use Full gesture navigation on MIUI with Android 11, either version 12.0 or 12.5, Xiaomi hasn't yet fixed this issue cause its seems at least Samsung and Oneplus already fixed it.
I have searched and found some alternatives to gesture navigation using 3rd party launchers like Nova Launcher.
Tried Infinity Gestures and Fluid Navigation Gestures but its no hiding my navigation bar, by accessibility or root.
Do you guys know other good alternatives that simulate Miui gestures? preferably not paid or with ads.
I am using FNG and its working perfectly fine. device is rooted.
to hide navbar, use this command via adb or rooted terminal
'settings put global force_fsg_nav_bar 1'
before root somehow fng was not working but infinity was working perfectly

After setting up Nova as your default launcher, download my gestures or edge gestures app from playstore, set it up and then go into homescreen inside the MIUI settings. There change navigation from buttons to gestures. This will remove the nav bar. By default this will lock you inside the setting app as the default gestures do not work if system launcher is changed from Mi launcher to any third party launcher. That's why I said first set up my gestures/edge gestures so that you don't get locked inside the settings app.
Btw when the phone is rooted, I'll dare to suggest to try CustoMIUIzer. It has a launcher section where you can tweak the default launcher such as hiding icon labels and modifying home screen gestures. May be you shall not feel the need to change Mi launcher to third party launcher, after tweaking it with CustoMIUIzer!!

Question Do gestures work with 3rd party launchers on miui?

About 4ish months ago, when I last used MIUI, there was a bug preventing gesture based navigation on third party launchers (nova, etc)
Can anyone confirm if that has been fixed by now?

On MIUI, Gestures do not work with nova or any third party launcher.
but on AOSP custom roms works normally.
I very much doubt this is a bug. you are supposed to use the system launcher and consume the ads

Well that is true, its just sad & pathetic, is there any way to circumvent this issue?
My guessing is, that Xiaomi disabled the android system gestures and has their own gestures implemented into the stock launcher. So removing the launcher, removes the gesture input.
Why I think that? Because #1, Xiaomi used to implement gesture navigation in miui even before Google implemented them in android. #2 the settings for gestures in miui 12 are inside the launcher menu.
I think that some kind of magisk module, which would enable/install the stock android gestures, would be possible.

You can use full screen navigation launcher app. It works perfectly for me. Here is a video from youtube that helped me with that.

This is one way to do it, but it gets annoying after a while as sometimes (i.e. pressing back rather than home, recent apps, a few other ways) will go back to the default launcher rather than the 3rd party launcher; also you are running two launchers all the time which isn't the best.
A better way is: set third party launcher + FNG, then use ADB to hide the navigation bar.

CUSTOM LAUNCHER GESTURES

Question Disable navigation buttons miui global 12.5.8

With the new update, miui global 12.5.8, the system no longer allows gestures AND third party launchers and forces default launcher to the system launcher if gesture navigation is selected. 3rd party launchers work with button navigation, and FGN. However, with 3rd party and FNG the navigation buttons persist. Is there anyway around this (i.e. 3rd party launcher with gesture navigation without navigation buttons persisting).
I have tried disabling the miui system launcher through adb, but it doesn't seem to work, launcher is still running.
Selecting the default launcher as system launcher, selecting gesture navigation and then launching 3rd party launcher and FNG gets the desired outcome, however the system launcher is still running/ selected as default (gesture for home button swaps back to system launcher - can remap home gesture to open 3rd party launcher as a work around for the home button).
Thanks,
Found a solution, but doesn't stick with power cycle:
adb shell settings put global force_fsg_nav_bar 1

Hey thanks mate, I try this and it looks successful, but can not keep when we reboot, any solutions for that bro, I also report issue to Xiaomi / Nova as well, is this Android 11's issue ?
Dears
I'm experiencing the same issue as OakaO with MIUI 12.5.8: cannot even set gestures if a 3-party launcher is being in use.
I've read this interesting thread https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/third-party-launcher-gestures.62948/ and tried the two solutions described there.
They works but have some side effects.
First solution:
The usage of the LADB app with the command settings put global force_fsg_nav_bar 1 works but has the side effect that you lose any theme status bar you may have configured: the status bar gets back to the one of the stock theme.
In addition it seems to not be resilient to reboot so after any reboot you have to enable ADB stuff and so on (for security reason, I prefer to not have them always enabled)
(I don't like that so I skipped this solution)
Second solution:
the usage of the adb command adb shell cmd overlay enable com.android.internal.systemui.navbar.gestural works too but (as stated in the thread) it has the side effect that you still see the gesture bar (which reduces also the screen size) but you totally lose the bottom gestures (even if you use Fluid Navigation Gestures app)
(I don't like that so I skipped this solution too)
At the end..... I lose the game and I'm using now my 3-party launcher with 3 navigation buttons which gives me a really ugly effect especially because I use also klwp theme and the 3 buttons are really bad.
After that I wrote on MI community (here the thread https://c.mi.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=3943484&page=1&extra=#pid20869921 ).
I'm still waiting for a further feedback but I'm worried that this behaviour is not a bug but a clear choice or strategy from Xiaomi.
Let's see what will happen.
bye
I don't want the nav bar but the software buttons.. the problem is that they are white and autohide does not work in most apps.
any solution?
