Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Moto G4 Plus come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

is it that good?
I keep seeing reviews and comments talking about the great quality of this camera (above the average, at the level of high end...), however, my phone does not cope very well with some situations and I do not know why. Is it defective? is it low light? I am going to post some images but right now I am going to describe the behaviour.
For some reason the main camera struggles a lot when taking pictures of thing in movement. I does not expect a shutter speed of 1/1000 but I cannot make my son to be more steady either. The image seems focused except the moving part which is always blurry. This happens in low light but also in conditions which I consider good light (exteriors, rooms with 25W LED + side lamp...)
The front camera IMHO does not deserve any compliment, it struggles a lot to focus, more than half the pictures are blurry and/or out of focus, most of them have a lot of noise like in low light. It is a bit better after turning on the flash in screen but, again, is this normal?
I will thank any comment on this.

Pictures 2 and 3 has very good light in my opinion and the camera struggles.
4 and 5 are made with the front camera and both are below the standard IMHO.

I honestly think that the camera on the Moto G could have been much better. I like the camera APP interface itself, but the photo quality is mediocre. Aside from picture quality, anyone notices their camera lens getting scratched up? Mine is.

Not good as described in media
The photo quality is not as described. Image stabilization seems just not there are or not working properly.
Photo quality is good only if still photos are taken during day time with more light in. That is all.
But for the cost of around $200 its a good phone but not a camera phone.

As far as I'm concerned the camera quality is really above average. Your problem seems to find his cause elsewhere.
To keep it simple, your photos may be blurry because of the lack of light indoor. Smartphone are known to have small objective (while real camera have big one) that can't gather a lot of light by themselve. It means that you'll have to sacrifice quality if the environnement is not well lit. In this case, you're phone try to make up for the lack of light by gathering more light before taking the photo which cause a more blurry photo. You can also manually set it to take it faster but you'll have to use a higher iso (which mean more noise).
If you want a good photo you need :
- light (even for a galaxy S7)
- A good objective (also the bigger the better but we're on a smartphone so...)
- A clean objective (I can't stress how this matter ! Even more if we consider that it's really use to put à finger on the objective of the moto g4)
Here you go, hope it helped, if you want to test your camera to see if it has some problem you should do it outdoor with the sun at zenith and some cloud to avoid bad shadows and blinding effects.

Thanks for your answer kayet95. The main point is that the camera is not reliable enough and you end up taking 5 pictures each time just to be sure one will be fine. Of course with the lighting you suggest the camera does well, it would be a complete rubbish if not, but take a look at my attachment sunlight. The window was fully open, there where sun coming into the scene and the camera struggled once.
I agree the camera is capable of taking great pictures, but it is nor reliable.

My experience is that the camera in G4Plus is above average for a phone. I think that who expects more is delusional, you need to buy a real camera to take good pictures - in low light or with any level of zoom.

This camera is very good for a phone camera, especially one of this price. To expect high quality pix from it in every lighting or motion situation is simply ludicrous.

the color quality is good, but sometimes i cant take a picture, might be my hand is wet, or the phone lagging

The camera is capable of good pictures, however mine seem inconsistent. Sometimes take the same shot a couple times to get good one, even in good lighting. I upgraded from last year's moto g, and consistently got excellent pictures with it.
Overall I feel the camera on the g4 plus isn't quite as good as last year's moto g. I was really expecting better.

I'm very satisfied with the camera on the p10 phone.

Hi guyz! I just got my P10...all I say about camera- it's a beast. Daylight photos are excelent. For me the "vivid" colour mod makes it 10/10. I've been playing with the camera for all day and I came up with 2 questions:
1)Which resolution do you guys prefer- 12 or 20 mp ??(Since it has only 12 mp colour sensor- does upscaling work good 4 you?)
2)Why software doesnt allow to zoom-in while @20mp at all?

Yes, this problem is mine as well

There is an issue with Verical Panorama. Although Horizontal Panorama works perfect, in Vertical as you go up, it gets constantly out of focus. It's hasnt been fixed since B113 and we are now in B162...I have sent the problem to Huawei in all socia media. Try it for yourself

have the phone about a week and thepicture quality is perfect!

Camera does an excellent job on automatic. Love it

P10 has got a magical night mode capture algorithms. Check attached photos below (first 2 taken with moon light only).

Yes! I gave that a try and I was impressed. If you have a small tripod it works even better.

Overall, very happy with the quality, but please Huawei, give us an option to save RAWs to external storage...

Panorma quality is very poor compared to my old Samsung S6.

There's already a RAW option.

Has the photo quality change or improve with the Oreo update?

On my P10 camera app version went from 4.x to 8.x with Oreo Update.
Regarding quality, i didn't see much improvement however i would say that one big flaw (for me) of the P10: artificially over-brightening night photos has been somehow improved (still has this ****ty habit but less)

Some new pictures I made. The bright ones were made in Auto-Mode, the Runway at Night is made in Manual mode with ISO50 and 30s exposure.

I haven't taken more than a few photos, but oh my lord this camera is absolutely awesome. Depth of field trick is snazzy and works perfectly 99% of the time. Color accuracy on photos is mind-blowing.

Took some sample pictures with Pixel 1 and Pixel 2, compared images on PC, they look identical but some are better on Pixel 1. Pixel 2 colors are more saturated and there is no flare....

I have been comparing the photos from the Pixel 2 to the iPhone 8 Plus if anyone is interested ?
Daylight and Night time

Took pictures today after dusk, same thing. Most images look identical to Pixel 1, but when I zoom in I can see that lens on Pixel 1 is a little bit sharper with less noise.
Edit: also noticed that automatic white balancing is off sometimes. Pixel 1 gets it right while Pixel 2 doesn't.
But all negatives are relatively small, I wouldn't say one is better then another

I don't find the camera miles better than previous phones I've owned (S7, S8, 5s pixel port etc). But it's capable, fast, a good allrounder and DOF mode is okay for a single lens construction. Hdr+ is a joy and considered, that Google don't yet utilize the new chip empowering this function it's FAST.

I have been able to take amazing pictures with the N5,N5X,N6P and now with the Pixel 2.
HDR+ does a great job in all these phones I owned.
The main quality difference between the N5 and the latest 3 I mentioned, are the megapixels. (But HDR+ quality was still solid in the old 5).
They main difference between the 5X/6P and the Pixel 2 is the speed to take photos, launch the camera, focus and process the HDR+ but the quality is really close.
I've decided to stick with HDR+ enhanced (which is similar to the old HDR+ in the Nexus) to minimise the risk of getting unfocused areas that sometimes with the HDR+ are not so detailed. So I'm sacrificing speed to capture photos to try to get always a perfect HDR+ shot.

I don't know because I stopped using cameras for my trips, since I got a Nexus 5 with HDR+ and before that I mostly used the typical compact Sony cyber shot with Carl Zeiss lense.
And I only regret to use smartphone as main camera when I switched from the N5 to Z5 Compact and went to Paris and took ugly photos. Specially nightly photos and closeup photos. This is the main reason I sold that phone after 6 months and went for the 5X.
Probably you can get better details with those cameras you mention. But there are some key features in HDR+ (this is all post processing) that do a lot of magic:
- Focus in most of the areas. (You can focus on a person's face and still capture the details behind a window that points to the street / or the clouds in the sky/ or other faces; as if you had focused directly on that window or clouds).
- More dark skies at night. The night photos look amazing. Nightly skies try to be converted to a more solid dark colour.
- Same good quality with sunny photos that have a lot of sunlight or sun rays and you can't see well trough the camera app when taking the photo because of the high brightness. After HDR+ you could have a good result more opaque.
Other things I like from the latest Google phones cameras:
- Panoramas. Sometimes I take a panorama with just 1 captured image, because of the increased FoV to fit a building. And sometimes you need to take more than 1 because the building still doesn't fit.
- Capture photos when walking: In previous HDR+ Nexus cameras when you press the shutter, camera starts capturing and you can have blurry photos if you were moving. In The Pixel 2 when I press the shutter of the camera (also walking and with HDR+ enhanced) phone camera blocks and take some time to capture to maximize the possibility of a crisp shot. (And if you press the shutter and starts shaking the camera it won't capture till you stop shaking)
So I'm taking photos when I don't have time to stop now.
- Minimum focus distance: I love close-ups / macro shots and the latest Google phones had a good minimum focus distance and mixed with HDR+ the result is amazing.
(The Z5 Compact I owned used to have a wide angle but terrible minimum focus distance I hate this).
What I don't really care is the new portrait mode. You get 2 photos when using it. With blurry unfocused areas and the original with no blur. I think this is only useful for CV photos or some close-ups or special cases. There is a lot of people that loves this feature. I personally prefer the photo that contains more data for 99% of my captures.

I had the iPhone 8 plus briefly and although similar, I'd probably say the Pixel 2 is a bit better, I also think the portrait mode is insanely good considering it only has one camera! :highfive:

absolutely not.
however, the pixel takes decent pictures completely automatically while you can completely mess up a picture on a mid range a mirrorless camera if you don't know how to use the settings - and the fully automatic mode of the mirrorless cameras tend not to be actually as good as the pixel
(technically, the pixel is also a mirrorless camera btw - just that the sensor and lens are tiny, get less light and aren't as sharp, basically - but they have much better automatic processing)

Thank you! And it was through a glass window too! No Lightroom or any other editing app. Just HDR!

Pixel 1 does not have Portrait mode (or at least not yet). Pixel 1 has Lens Blur mode, it works but not as good

I had Canon G5 ($500 compact camera) and gave it away with a purchase of Pixel 1. I think P1 pictures are much better.

No you can't activate it, not sure if it's software or some hardware thing. Maybe Google will enable it later

P20 Pro Camera problems

Believe it or not, P20 pro shoots terrible photos! Zoom in and see the details they are absolutely terrible. Especially when shooting close-ups the phone performs poorly and the images are blurry. I don't know why the problem occurs but it shouldn't be how so called the worlds best camera would perform. Anyone else has this problem?

Sure. But it looks nice on the phone display. This is what people want.

I don‘t know. I also wonder. For me, zoom is not usable, and I only use pro mode, because it processes the images differently. Auto, night and hdr mode are currently just outputting bad, blurry and oversharpened images. Hoping for a firmware fix but I often read that other users like the look, so it‘s probably how huawei wants them to look.

I noticed that the zoom sensor isn't always stabilized: in low light and in close up shots it loses his stabilization, thus it produces awful results. Few days ago I took a picture of a little cat with 3x zoom, in a very low light scenario. This is the result I got (see attachment).
I also have attached a video where you can clearly see the stabilized zoom lense kicking in, and how shaky the image is when the stabilization goes off (focus on how the images "stretches" when I zoom to my little Wi-Fi antenna and to my mouse).

Another quick comparison (attachments):
3x Without Stabilization (closer to subject) vs 5x With Stabilization (Farther)
Same light conditions, I just moved farther and closer to reach the distance needed to lose stabilization.
I think our zoom lense is intended to work just with far objects and not to take closer macro shots.

Tele lense useless for macro shots! Minimum distance 1, 1.5 meter need.

I roughly measured the distance: it's about 50-60cm. Getting farther from this with good light conditions will enable Stabilized Zoom Lens. In low light scenario, stabilization doesn't work at any distance for me.

I agree! Especially in scenes with high contrast (landscapes in bright sunlight...) 1. dark surfaces (mostly shadows) turn into deep black (no more structures...) and 2. all details lost when you zoom into the picture (And no, i am not a pixelpeeper, but pls compare the 100%-View with another flagship...).
Intelligent Auto-HDR has to come, like in iOS or Samsungs Galaxys...
I also agree with the statement, these p20 pro pictures were made for good looking at the small display, not more!

I'm sorry but that's not totally correct. When AI is turned on, it automatically enables HDR when needed and is surprisingly good.

I think you may be the problem with your photos.
1st is 3x lens
2nd is 5x hybrid further away.
The 3x is clearly better.

Obviously there are shortcomings with the zoom which users should be aware of when using it. The big one is the aperture which if i remember correctly is only f/2,4 or something like that. A big difference from the other lenses as it let's in a lot less light to the sensor. It also answers the questions why it performs poorly when the light disappears. Use zoom only when you have enough light to get a good shot, if the light is poor shoot at 40mpix shot and then crop it in post.
I'm having no big issues with the zoom myself as i only use it in good daylight situations and i avoid the 5x zoom since it looks way to artificially enhanced. Just crop into a 1x or 3x shot is enough.
I do wish Huawei toned down on sharpening and noise reduction as it would improve detail rendering to a much greater degree. A little sensor noise is not a bad thing, it gives photos a bit more character and personality.

Obviously there are shortcomings with the zoom which users should be aware of when using it. The big one is the aperture which if i remember correctly is only f/2,4 or something like that. A big difference from the other lenses as it let's in a lot less light to the sensor. It also answers the questions why it performs poorly when the light disappears. Use zoom only when you have enough light to get a good shot, if the light is poor shoot at 40mpix shot and then crop it in post.
I'm having no big issues with the zoom myself as i only use it in good daylight situations and i avoid the 5x zoom since it looks way to artificially enhanced. Just crop into a 1x or 3x shot is enough.
I do wish Huawei toned down on sharpening and noise reduction as it would improve detail rendering to a much greater degree. A little sensor noise is not a bad thing, it gives photos a bit more character and personality.

In auto mode HDR is also used automatically when deemed appropriate with AI turned off. The only way to disable auto HDR is to use pro mode (and likely some of the other modes, but they are obviously more specialized).

Sorry you both(solofero & MikeMTS)! It may be right that HDR comes with Auto (with AI or w/o AI doesn´t matter)... But that intelligence when HDR turns on is crappy, most pics I wish they had HDR comes without it. So I have to turn on HDR manually for most situations...

Question Poor quality when taking pics of people

Hello guys,
First of all I love the camera. It is so good but I am facing two issues and would be good if anyone has a solution.
1- When recording a video and zoom between 1.1 - 2.9 the quality is super poor and unusable, however on 1X or 3X the quality is super sharp and great, I am not sure why the main lens act poor when zooming in to 2.9 before switching to the tele lens.
2- taking selfies is great when there is one person or two in the photo but when there are more than 2 in the photo, their faces become so cartoony with no details, even in day light, this happen also when using the back camera. I am using the standard resolution, no idea if using the 40mb or the 108mb will make any different
Other than these, the camera is great!

1. That's normal. 1.1 to 2.9x zoom is digital zoom. Don't expect the same quality as when you didn't zoom.
2. Use group selfie or disable bokeh from your selfie shots.
