SM-N960U Bootloader Unlock/ROM's? - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hey guys, before I get flamed I did a ton to rooting /modding years ago but I've fell off the past few years so bear with me on this on... I may be getting a new phone soon so losing some functionality on this one wouldn't be the end of the world now (Wifi calling on VZW, etc).
I'm reading about the time roll back trick to unlock the bootloader which would allow the flashing of custom roms. Everything seems to point to the SM-N960F but doesn't explicitly say it's not for the SM-N960U (or at least not what I've read). Can anyone confirm if my phone is unlockable, therefore allowing custom roms, root, etc?
Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

I may have answered my own question... I was following this thread (linked from a rom) and at step 9 / 10 there's no" Software Update " section in settings, only a "System Update" and that box isn't available to uncheck. So when I reboot, the phone is updating to the current date and there's no OEM Unlock option available in Developer Settings.

No bootloader unlock on United States Snapdragon, no OEM unlock. Setting date back only works on International devices. I believe the Hongkong Snapdragon is unlockable and can be rooted. You can flash unlocked firmware (U1) but that doesn't unlock your bootloader it's just unbranded firmware.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I had flashed the U1 firmware a while back when I first got the phone but ultimately ended up flashing stock Verizon software to get WiFi calling working. This was originally an AT&T branded phone that's sim unlocked.

There is an Extreme Syndicate Root method for Note 9. It's not for beginners though. I used Extreme Syndicate root for my At&t Note 8...which is much easier than the Note 9 method

Thanks. I just read up on it. I miss the days of a few ADB commands for full system root. Even the Pixels aren't as easy as the Nexus's used to be (assuming the model has unlockable bootloader).

Why not just ROM from SIM free EU Note using Odin?
I've done it few times over the weekend to restore the phone, it should remove all the carrier crap inc SIM lock.

SG Note unlocked from leaving factory in the UK.
As for flashing a rom to remove carrier crap, thats just debranding, flashing a rom or kernel does not affect its network lock status, that is a completely different thing to flashing.
cellunlocker is one of the cheapes and most effective ways, and is guaranteed 100% or your money back.

[Q] Ultimate Question - Unlocked Bootloader?

So to help us determine future mod capabilities such as custom recovery's and rom's any word if the at&t note 3 has an unlocked bootloader?... Only those with it in hand would be able to answer this question with the proper tools.

Look at the S4, still no bootloader unlock. If you want a GN3 unlocked bootloader your best option is to buy it unlocked.

Just for my clarification, how are people installing a custom recovery and roms on the AT&T S4 if bootloader is locked? Couldn't we do the same on the AT&T N3? Thanks

Eventually, someone will figure out an exploit. The S4 uses and exploit called Loki. Since the Note 3 was just release it will be a while before anyone figure out an exploit.

[Q] Need and official T-Mobile Rom for AT&T Moto X

I have a friend with an AT&T Moto X. He is selling it and offered me a good deal on it. It is already unlocked (I know I may need to unlock it again if I change roms and such but I assume his code may carry over and I don't mind buying an unlock code if needed). I am very interested in the phone but would prefer to have the official stock T-Mobile rom on the phone. I can install a custom bootloader if necessary, but I cannot find an official T-Mobile rom for the phone. Does anyone know where I could find the official stock T-Mobile rom or know how I can switch it to the T-Mobile rom from the AT&T rom? Thanks
If it's an AT&T Moto x, then you can't bootloader unlock it. If it is SIM unlocked once, then it'll stay that way forever. If it has a locked bootloader, then you can't really install a rom on it.

I thought I should stay unlocked. I had read a few posts from people suggesting it might have to be redone though, so I wasn't sure. So It is stuck with the AT&T rom for good then I presume? The only reason I would have a desire to change the rom would be to take advantage of a perticular T-Mobile app, which I can get on the phone anyways. Would there be any notable problems that anyone knows of with using an unlocked AT&T Moto X on T-mobile?
I am using one right now and it works fine. The only possible issue is if you're in an area that hasn't had a network refarm. In those areas, you can only get 2g instead of 3g. It has the same LTE coverage either way.

My AT&T Moto X is bootloader unlocked. Cost me $40 to get the code. There's quite a few threads being posted about it. I'm using it on T-Mobile right now. Once it is carrier unlocked, it stays that way. Same with the bootloader. I get LTE on T-Mobile.
It's well worth the $40 to unlock the bootloader. You can root, install roms, and pretty much do whatever you want to your phone.
Side note: I don't think there is an official T-Mobile rom since the T-Mobile version is the unlocked GSM version.

If it is not on 4.4.2 already, you can root it and use a SafeStrap ROM. If it's on 4.4.2 already, you're out of luck. I don't think AT&T has sent out the update already, so it probably doesn't have 4.4.2.

Root and tethering question

I'm not familiar with the Moto x xt1053 at all, I've been doing some searching using tapatalk so it's not the easiest.
What I'm trying to figure out is if there's a full root method and a tether app that runs off of my phone data rather than my hotspot plan. Also if there's anything else I should know I'm getting myself into. Thank you in advance.

The XT1053 is either the GSM Developer Edition or the GSM "unlocked" (includes T-Mobile SIM) from Moto Maker.
You can unlock the bootloader on it via Motorola's web site, but unless you have the Developer Edition, you void your warranty. Once the bootloader is unlocked, you can root any rom version on there.
IF you get the Non-Dev Edition and do not want to unlocked (so you keep your warranty), then you have to worry about what rom is on your phone. If it already has 4.4.2 installed, you can't root it with a locked bootloader. If you have 4.4 or lower, you can root, but do NOT take the update to 4.4.2. For more details see what I've already typed over in this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/-t2702982
As for tethering, there are various options once you root depending on your carrier.
Thank you got the info! How do I know if it's the dev edition or not? If it's already on 4.4.2 can I downgrade like I would using Odin with my Samsung?

Dev edition is black face, woven white back, silver accents (button/camera ring) and says "Developer Edition" on the back. "GSM Unlocked' wont say Dev Edition on back, and can be black or other color backs.
as for downgrade, please take the time and use the LINK I supplied, its answered over there.

Its not dev edition. Then again, the warranty is non-transferrable... so unless the person you are getting it from is a friend/family member who could send it for warranty repair later, the warranty wouldn't apply to you so unlocking wouldn't impact you.
I'm not worried about a warranty at all. So basically, from what I gather, I can root no matter what, but if it's on 4.4.2 I have to unlock the bootloader first?

Yup.. as said in the other thread, if its on 4.4 (or lower), you can use SlapMyMoto/MotoWpNoMo to root and disable write protection.
however, unlocking the bootloader & rooting is way way easier.

I presume you are referring to the Samsung Galaxy S6 (SM-G920T)?
If so then yes you can flash SU and TWRP via Odin and install a compatible ROM through recovery.
That's because the bootloader is not locked. Or at least at the moment with 5.1.1

Yes. The T-Mobile S6 variant (SM-G920T) does NOT have a locked a bootloader at present.
The S7 however does and the suspicion (though unfounded at the moment) is that once T-mobile releases the Marshmallow update for the S6 it may lock the bootloader. Thus, it is probably going to be a good idea to wait on taking the Marshmallow update as soon as it is available (if root is desirable).
So will any normal Roms available for the standard GSM s7 work with the T-Mobile model? Also, is installing twrp as simple as something like a Nexus? I haven't been in the ROM game for a while, thanks for the help guys

For the umpteenth time yes. You just need to make sure that whatever ROM you want to flash is compatible with the T-Mobile S6 variant (SM-G920T).
There is a T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Android Development forum here at XDA which will have a number of different ROMs to choose from as well as information and support for said ROMs.
