Since the 12th, I have been trying to find an unlock for the phone, and stumbled upon a seller who goes by Swiftunlocks. He has provided excellent service, and his unlock code for the Droid 3 works 100%. I would recommend his service to anyone who wishes to have their phone unlocked. He charges a fee, but he's also the only one around to unlock phones for people who aren't with Verizon.

You can find his services His support was excellent as well because even when out of business hours, he sent me my unlock codes minutes after paying.
But i dont think we can use this phone here in us with gsm even after unlock.

The T-Mobile and AT&T bands are locked out, even with the SIM slot unlocked. Verizon does this with pretty much all of their global Android phones. It's presumably because they're the exclusive carrier for them in the US, so they don't want anyone being able to use them on another major US carrier.

And if I buy a Droid 3 in the USA, buy an unlockcode and unlock this Droid 3.
Can I use it on GSM-network here in Europe (the Netherlands) or isn't that possible?
Here we also have T-Mobile as a provider, will that work? And Vodafone? That's what I have...
I'm gonna start a topic here on XDA about the best 'version' of the Droid 3 for using in Europe / The Netherlands. You have the Motorola XT883 version in China, you have the Droid 3 version in the USA and there is the Motorola XT860 4G in Canada..

I'm not an expert at this, but they should work if the bands are the same. They locked out the AT&T bands on the Verizon Droid 2, im not sure about the droid 3.

Droid 3 will work on FOREIGN sim cards when unlocked, but will not work on AT&T USA and T-Mobile USA. I read somewhere that they are making a Droid 3 or something similar for AT&T though. I left links, from where I found this information if you would like to see for yourself

No, it won't be.
If it has the Droid 3 name (which means it's the Verizon version of the phone), the SIM slot will be locked regardless of where you buy it. Some versions released in other countries (like the XT860 4G in Canada) may or may not be SIM locked. That remains to be seen. But anything called the Droid 3 will be SIM locked out of the box from any retailer, even Motorola.
An unlockcode will cost you about $30,- so that isn't a problem

I suppose it will be locked, too, but I'm not sure. On the Motorola store site, nowhere Verizon is mentioned -- moreover, when needed, they generally refer to "your servive provider". And nowhere anything is said about a locking, not even in the "Product Disclaimer" link.
I will eventually know when I got the phone. Of course I'm prepared to pay $30 for unlocking, but if I have to, I'll write a complaint to Motorola.
Could someone please provide a link to a reliable service for unlock codes. I couldn't find anyone on Ebay with the name swiftunlocks...

Then I'd go ahead and get that complaint typed up and that money for unlocking ready to go.
They use "your service provider" because they sell phones for different service providers. It's easier to have a blanket statement rather than tailoring the statement to every single device. Verizon pays for the rights to use the "Droid" name. So any device with that Droid name is the Verizon version of the phone. There's no reason why Verizon would allow devices with the name they paid for the rights to (through a very costly deal with LucasFilm no doubt) to come unlocked to be used on other carriers if they aren't allowing it for all of the phones. In the end, if you buy it directly from Motorola, you'll just pay $65 more ($525 vs $460) than you would if you bought it outright from Verizon for the exact same locked phone.

Go to ebay and search for droid 3 unlock. You'll find sellers: freedomobile and unlock_fusion.
I don't know if they will work, but more than 99% of their customers is positive about them. Keep us posted when you try it out.
I just hope everyone understands what "unlock" you are getting as it is NOT the boot loader. Seems like on other forums they think its a boot loader unlock
Got my D3 from Motorola store. As expected, it was SIM locked. But I can confirm too that codes from swiftunlocks work!

Like others, I couldn't find a retail site for swiftunlocks on ebay - I must be doing something wrong - but as others said, if you search ebay for "Droid 3 unlock" you will get a couple links to other sellers of unlock codes but
BEWARE
they say in the small print that they can only send the codes via post! (snailmail) per ebay regulations!

I've come across this recently and am curious ( I'm not listing the online selling company) - if a company is selling a new phone that says is tmobile unlocked (unlocked by tmobile not factory), and they are saying is for international use only, BUT the phone has the right bands for AT&T LTE - why would there be a chance of the IMEI being blocked? Because they are saying due to recent unlocking laws in the U.S. the phone's IMEI could be blocked in the future (they say they clear it when they have it but can't guarantee future). From what I'm reading an IMEI is only blocked because the phone was stolen or payment is owed on it - so how can unlocking laws affect this??

i have never heard anything like that before. i dont see how it could be blacklisted since tmobile unlocked it and tmobile would be the only one who could blacklist it

Yeah me neither, but that's what the site/company told me in an online chat session - if the phone has 700mhz LTE then really i should be able to go buy it from tmobile full price, have them unlock it, and i can use it wherever, at least I would think. I don't know where they are coming from with this, does tmobile have a contract with Sony maybe.....
by the phone their site says " This device is intended for INTERNATIONAL USE only! "

If the seller states that his phone is unlocked for GSM networks, does it really mean that it can be used on any GSM networks? Has anyone bought the phone and unlocked it, and used it in Southeast Asian countries; say, Singapore? I wanted to buy either GSM or AT&T unlocked model, but it appears sellers are not willing to go below $300. But when I searched in Verizon's section, many are willing to sell below $300. But the problem is, I'm concern whether it can be used on GSM networks for calls and sms. Somebody please help
I bought my One in the UK and, as far as I'm aware, it's locked to Three (the network I bought it from). Since I've come to China and South East Asia, I do not get any signal on my phone. My girlfriend who has an iPhone 3Gs and is also on Three gets signal (or she did before she cancelled her contract).
Should I get signal out here? I thought the phone would be able to work anywhere in the world in spite of where it was purchased. Anybody know anything about this? It's rooted and I have a custom ROM and custom firmware installed. Pretty sure I also updated the radio manually too, but I can't remember.

Its not working because the phone is SIM-locked to Three network. You will have to SIM unlock the phone.

Request an unlock code and continue the process. Then, your SIM will be unlocked and you will be able to use it anywhere

If you have your UK SIM in there, maybe you need to activate roaming on the network. But you know what they're like, you can only do that whilst in the UK.
Get an unlock code from eBay or a website and buy a local SIM, it'll save you money in days or even hours given the stupendous price of data roaming.

I am also looking for a solution as I am due to travel to asia next month. Mine is locked to EE. I can carry two phones but I really wanna avoid this for safety reasons and also because when holidaying i'm always carrying other valuables like passports, cash, external battery bank, sunglasses etc etc.

A network lock does not mean it cannot be used in another country, you can still travel else where and use the phone with locked network, well it's actually called SIM Lock not network lock, when SIM is locked it means it only accepts 1 provider to be used on the phone. But when you travel it can still borrow other networks systems so you will still be able to call and send sms and such as you can do now.
So let's say you live in UK and got provider called three and it's locked to three, then when you travel to asia it will automaticly borrow one of their network somehow but it will etc say three (vodafone) on the phone, that means it is borrowing network through vodafone in asia but billing will go via three and not vodafone. since vodafone will bill three and then three will bill you for the sms, calls and such.
Answer to OP: easiest way is to go to provider where your bought the phone from and have them unlocking your SIM lock on the phone. But it would cost you money for it thought. But be aware, if your phone is under a subscription deal then provider will reject the SIM unlock. Since they don't want you to try use another provider or try cancel current one while you got phone from them cheaper under a subscription. So this is why SIM lock is set on the phone to avoid this. But you can still use other networks called roaming with same SIM card, like i explained further up how it will go when you travel.

Thanks for the reply, Jake. I was hoping to use a local sim on my holiday in Asia and then to Egypt... as data is a LOT cheaper using a local sim instead of roaming on my UK EE sim. If it is network locked, it would mean I cannot use a local sim abroad, correct?

never heard of something called network locked, but i have heard of sim lock. sim lock is diffirent to network lock, it means you can only use carrier you got phone off. But it will still use function called roaming what so ever when you travel to be able to connect to your carrier through other carriers systems.
So try asking your provider again is it network lock or sim lock. They could of meant sim lock and not network lock. If they say this then you are good to go and can use your SIM card anywhere, but then it will show on phone something like Three (Other operators name) since it will automaticly borrow through another carriers system. But you will be charged via your local carrier for the calls, internet use and so on.
So as stated, mine was locked to EE and they wouldn't unlock it.
I used https://www.unlockunit.com and got some unlock codes in less than 24hrs. My o2 card now works!
I assume now it's sim unlocked, that any card from any country would work. But that's a guess on my part.

Yup! That's what happened. Basically, a friend purchased the P20 from a third party site (ie, not EE) with the intent to sell it (to me in the end). He assumed it was unlocked, which it wasn't on arrival. EE wouldn't unlock it until 6 months in.
I put the details into that site and honestly expected nothing. Less than 24hrs later I got a bunch of unlock codes, first one worked. Very happy

they even don't have mate 20 pro on list just mate 20 lite.
So it's impossible to take out simlock with this fake site
Network / SIM lock, same thing.
Basically you just want to use another SIM than was originally intended, for travelling purposes or for if the phones sold and the buyer wants to use another SIM.
There are a tonne of services on the high street and online, eBay etc who can do this.
Should be quite cheap.
EE will provide it for £20 so long as the phones over 6 months old. Least that's what it used to be.
They can do it for free but you'd have to sweet talk them.
It's your right to have it unlocked, mobile networks shouldn't be able to lock them down, certain shops like carphone warehouse offer unlocked phones so I'd recommend buying from them in the future.
OEM's also offer the device unlocked.
