What did the 58.0.a.3.88 update do? - Sony Xperia 1 II Questions & Answers

Hey guys, you have any clue?

Possibly July security update along with improvements to camera (and other bug fixes hopefully)? Not sure, only Customized RU has it for now

It adds RAW, RAW +JPEG options for all 3 cameras in Photo Pro.

When will this be releas3d?!

Would make no sense for HDR since Raw is an unprocessed image data file.
I guess burst mode isn't supported because raw files is way bigger file size. Maybe it can't save those big files that fast.

No night mode in sight?

58.0.a.3.39 update has broke the wifi 6 the device drops wifi connection which is not good also older apps dont work anymore.
---------- Post added at 12:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:00 PM ----------
Has this new update fixed issues as i have not received this yet on my phone?

I like that in the metadata of the raw files they added extra info, like iso, shutter speed, focal length, capture time and date and location etc and also a lens profile. I've seen many phones where these data are only in the jpg's , not in the raw files.

This is not true. You can take several RAW exposures and merge it into basically a super RAW file that contains all of the data of the component RAW exposures straight from the sensor.
Google Pixels have been doing it for quite some time now with their RAW DNG HDR+ shots and they have crazy amounts of latitude.

DNG is a container which can also contain metadata, exitdata, multiple raws and even processed jpgs, but the actual raw image data in that file is raw; as in not processed. If I take 2 or more raw files and hdr merge to a dng in Lightroom, the image is still the same and it's still not a processed file. Not until I starts pulling the highlight and shadows and save it. It's basically the same the Pixel 3 do.

The RAW data derived from multiple RAW exposures in the Pixel is a true RAW file. It hasn't even been demosaiced. So yes, multiple exposure-bracketed RAW files *can* be merged into a true RAW file with higher dynamic range than any of the component single RAW files, but Sony's software isn't capable of doing it.

Let's hope it comes.

Wish the update would get pushed out... On generic firmware but no sign of the update yet

Well my Xperia 1 ii is a Hong Kong import and I use it in Saudi Arabia.
And for me, I got the update this morning and it brought 5G network support.
Previously it was at LTE+ and I've tested the speeds previously and now and the difference is significant as shown attached.

Zoom and File Format: I have found that the zoom (volume key) will work with jpeg and jpeg + raw but will not work in raw. Anyone else have this issue? Is it a bug in the update?

It's not a bug. Zoom works by taking a part of the sensor image and enlarging it. That will always be in a jpg. When you shoot raw only, you just get the unprocessed image of the whole sensor.

Thanks, I should have realized that, I’m not use to digital zoom. I guess it (jpeg+raw) can still be used as a focus magnifier when using manual focus.

mini[GUIDE] How to fix jpeg compression of camera (for S-OFF and rooted users)

This is intended for users that have rooted (S-OFFed first) their IS and won't flash a custom ROM in the near future.
It's just a small "hack" to decrease the jpeg compression of the default camera app in order to get much bigger jpg images (about 3MB).
Please note I'm new in this and I'm just describing what I did to my phone hoping that some may find it useful and in no case I take responsibility for any harm to your device.
Also any suggestions or corrections from other experienced members are welcomed.
----------------------------------------------
Requirements
- you must have root (su, busybox installed)
- android sdk (or any other way to run adb from your PC successfully)
HowTo
- copy the original media_profiles.xml from the phone (in case something goes wrong) with
Code:
adb pull /system/etc/media_profiles.xml
-rename this file from .xml to .bak
- download the attachment and extract it in order to get the media_profiles.xml and copy that file to sdcard (by any means)
- connect your phone and get into su with
Code:
adb shell
su
(now here -assuming you have SuperUser installed- watch your phone since superuser might popup and ask for permission wich you will grand.
if you don't get to root shell # then try again and give watch again for the Superuser popup in your phone)
- (assuming you are in root shell # in adb) make the system writable, copy the new file and restore the system to readonly with
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
busybox cp /sdcard/media_profiles.xml /system/etc
mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
- reboot your phone
- done
any chance of some before and after shots??
I tried this out, it quadrupled the image size but idk if it made any difference in quality( its supposed to) will take some outside shots and see.
I'm sorry for not uploading samples.. well.. I tried to get a photo today from one that I had some days ago. Not the same angle but similar.
Since I'm a photographer believe me when I say that even if the sharpness of the image won't change (and that's a big IF since I haven't checked it after the hack) the extra size of the file means that we have much more info to work on postprocessing. And that's simply because jpeg is a lossy algorithm.
Here is the analysis of the two files with JpgQ software
(in both pictures focus was set on the rock so the sea in the upper part seams out of focus.)

Hi Nikant,
This is exactly what I've been looking for, to increase the image size and lessen compression!
I haven't done a comparison of before and after to check the quality, but it definitely increases the file size to around 4MB when set on 8MP quality. Now, if only we could improve the picture noise on the camera...
Cheers.
just updated mine
heres some before and after pics - first 3 photos are before, last 4 are after
PS to my eye theres absolutely no difference

the quality remains the same. My N900's 5mp camera takes superior pictures to the IS's 8MP camera, this .xml script doesn't do much in improving the quality. I really hate that the 8MP pictures don't actually have a 8MP resolution, zoom in and you will find out. Makes the pictures unusable for me to edit in photoshop.

Have to agree the camera of IS really sucks. My previous Hero (5MP) took pictures of much higher quality than IS 8MP camera. The pictures look even worse when viewed in a PC. Really hope there's a fix for this.
I wish some one made a application that takes raw pictures and then you could choose which format to use and set the noise reduction.
I took far better pictures in dark with my hd2. If there's enough light the pictures look great. Photos taken with flash in a darker room are soooooo noisy it hurts my eyes... 720p videos seem to be way to blurry as well. I didn't expect that.
Otherwise I am absolutely happy with the phone.
Hope htc is working on a fix pack!
HTC definitely won't be working on a fix for this. I doubt they see it as a problem. I've submitted a couple of fix requests to them, but all they ever reply is 'we'll pass it on...'!
do all new htc phone have this problem? desire s? sensation ? I hope some one comes up with a fix or something.
I never tried to fix the quality of the camera or the noise. Those to an extend are hardware problems and cannot be fixed by any xml file..
All that does is to reduce the jpeg compression. When you have a jpeg file at 100% or 99% quality then the rest are mainly hardware/firmware problems which can be fixed only by HTC..

You won't get better image quality out of the build in sensor. The noise is a tribute to the stupid need for more megapixels especially on low current sensors. There is a similar problem with the compact cameras. The increased pixeldensity of the small sensors cause increased noise as well. I could rant for hours on this... Better compose your pictures while shooting instead of cropping them afterwards. Then you don't need more pixels and get less noise. But that is all about selling more devices. More pixels, more sold units....
Enough. Sorry for my harsh words. And no offends. I appreciate the efforts to get the best out of our IS.
The pic attached is taken with a 6MP cam...
Cheers

Because of this reason, are you likely to get better photos by setting the image size to 5MP? Or would this still take the photo at 8MP and then resize whilst saving?

Yes sir
Working on PA 4.45
It's not the same as OPPOs Super Zoom, the file size is actually decreased and the resolution is decreased. However noise seems to be reduced.
Auto
Clear Image
Is there a setting for Clear Image (as I can't find one) or does it take better pics automatically?
I did some small tests and I wasn't impressed, as mentioned above, file size is actually smaller than a normal picture.
I'd imagine selecting ISO100 in settings could yield better results. (During the day)
How can you tell if clear image is enabled or is it always on a as I don't see it anywhere in any options.

Press the little wand icon and enable it as a picture mode. Then swipe through the list on the viewfinder to get to it.
Edit: Further testing seems to show that all 'Clear Image' does is reduce image noise at the cost of a small bit of resolution. So it is rather aptly named, however this may also result better low light pictures. As shown below, taken under a desk.

I said noise is reduced, so our statements agree. However you have to factor in that this takes about 3.5 seconds to take a picture, but yes the pictures are impressive.
I appreciate the new mode for clearer images, I was hoping for something closer to OPPO's camera that creates a higher resolution image from multiple pictures or Sony's superior auto mode that over samples pictures to create one image

I am running it now, on a Oppo Find 7a with the latest CM nightly on it and it runs very fine, just like the previous version ..... BUT ...
I can not find the "clear image" mode in my list .... Between which modes is it ? I have 29 modes (auto,HDR,Smart scene etc ..
(and the stock camera app on the Oppo can do those High res pictures. )
How many modes do you have ?
Thanks, Sparcky
Hi,
Running crDroid v4, installed the apk and can only work for a few shots and it will revert back to stock CM11 camera. I even disable the stock cam and clear cache and data, problem still persist. AND, there's no Magic Wand to change settings to 'Clear Image'.

[ROOT] 60fps 1080p video recording + Highest photo quality mod

For Android N, go to this page:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/themes/root-image-quality-video-bitrate-t3553614
Hi everyone,
Coming from a rooted and modded G2 , It was weird for me not to have 60fps video recordings as I mainly used 60fps before.
This weekend I took it upon myself to find a solution for it.
The good news:
It works, we have FHD 60fps video recording.
The bad news:
It comes with a tiny limitation - I couldn't make the wide angle camera to work with 60fps.
What does it mean?
1. Even if FHD60fps mode is chosen, wide angle will only record in 30fps.
2. If you will start recording a video using the main 16MP camera on 60fps, and during this recording you will change to the wide angle lens, from the moment you change to the wide angle the recording will use 30fps (even if you go back to the main lens after).
Screenshot:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-D1R0L7NVDIdnJzZ3FPMmxWb2s/view?usp=sharing
Note:
-I own an H850 European variant. As far as I know, it should't make any difference as long as you are rooted.
Update: Tested also on H830 (Thanks lordodin912).
I've tested the "60fps camera mod + 64Mbit UHD" and the "Restore original" zip files. "60fps camera mod" should be identical but I haven't tested it yet.
-If you encounter pink screen when HDR is on, xbenjiiman updated us that 10d fixed the issue for him. Thanks.
Important:
-If you encounter hiccuping in the video (and you probably will), turn off "steady" in the camera settings. You should see "OIS" icon instead. The hiccuping should be gone and you can enjoy smooth 60fps.
Warning:
As always, backup your device before. Just in case.
I am not responsible for any damage to your phone from using this mod.
That's it, enjoy 60fps!

*No need to delete cache \ dalvik etc..
If for some reason you're having any issues with the camera, first try to delete the camera app data in the phone's settings.

Not sure about "many" optimizations but it includes all the optimizations I know: 100% photo quality , higher bitrate, 60fps.
Keep in mind, disable "steady" (so the icon will show "OIS") setting when recording 60fps to avoid glitches.

A little bug happen when recording a slow motion: the live preview appear stretched but the final video has no problem

Update (Image grain improved): Gcam with ULTRA WIDE and TELEPHOTO support it's here!

Last Wichaya Gcam support auxiliar lens without root in some devices. After trying on my G8 power I could say work really well with macro and ultra wide lenses. You only need to download the APK, install and activate it on advanced settings. I don't know why in telephoto mode use the ultra wide instead, but works well, so it's ok for me, for 2x zoom you got hi res zoom incorporated on any Gcam. When you change to any different lens the app was rebooted and can't do this if a image it's processing.
XML settings supported too.
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/changelog1311/
Update: video mode works with macro and wide angle too, but don't expect stability when wide angle it's enabled. You need to change lens mode before.
Update: The new Wichaya Gcam Update now allows you to manually change the ID of the secondary lenses, so it is now possible to enable the Telephoto lens on our G8 Power (Disabling Macro), also the lens shift buttons work properly (0.6x for Ultra wide, 2x for Telephoto). To do this you can do it manually or using my XML settings file which has all the necessary configurations to work both the telephoto and the ultra wide angle, plus it's configured by me to achieve a better picture with each of the lenses.
Camera comparation
You can see Here a comparation between Stock camera and Wichaya's Gcam with my settings.
It's cool that finally we can use the additional cameras with the Google Cam app. I see much more noise (although better detail too) compared to the default Moto app and the Parrot ROM. Did you have any success in that regard?

Have you seen my photo comparison? After changed one by one the settings of the three lens the results are clearly superior in every way. If you are using my XML go to settings and enable the lib patcher, cause it's this that correct and apply the changes what i mention and don't it's auto enabled when charge the XML.
Update
Added 2 more photos to the Photo Comparation Album showing how the 4X Zoom works (Telephoto + Gcam's 2X Super Res Zoom)
I agree with the noise comments. The Wichaya camera has WAAAAY more noise then Parrot and Stock. I loaded the g8p-by-mikael1013.xml XML, and took a picture, and compared it to PARROT, and STOCK. Below are the results.

FYI - Arnova's GCAM allows you to do the same thing, but this one allows you to use ALL lenses. Wide, Main, Macro, Tele. Arnova's GCAM allows you to switch between lenses so much faster, without the annoying camera restarts. The only problem.. is that in VIDEO mode, there doesn't seem to be any software stabilization.

Thread updated with another Gcam port with better noise treatment
Following users opinions about the grain treatment by Wichaya's Gcam I looked for better options with same multiple lens support, that's how I found Nikita Gcam. This Gcam allows to change between lens with better response, better grain treatment, lib patcher and custom libs. If you want to try my personalized settings use this XML File who it's tuned for better color and detailed photos.

This is a good one also... only problem... video stabilization for Video is not working.
Wide angle lense is also very grainy compared to stock. But after going through 15 different gcam ports... every other one is the same.
Main lens in this port looks very good!
Try changing lenses while a picture is processes. The HDR message stays on the screen and won't go away. Even when exiting out of the cam.

I spent quite some time trying to tame the wide angle lens noise. Still the stock camera beats it . BTW there is a new version from Nikita but it doesn't seem to improve the grain or the lack of video stabilization.

I need to try this new version that you said, maybe have any new option to improve the grain on wide angle.

Sorry guys. Maybe I miss something. Does this app support Moto G Power (sofia)? I checked the link and found it's not on the list.

The versions listed here do work with the sofia even if it is not listed on their website.
The latest version of Nikita GCam works but the only version of Wichaya's GCam that works with my phone is the 2.5 version listed here. The newer versions of Wichaya's crash and close when I try to switch lenses.

Question RAW/DNG on the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra

As far as I have seen in the stock camera app RAW/DNG is only supported on the main 1x camera module.
This is a real pity because in my opinion the results from the stock camera app is really bad.
The underlying hardware is able to achiev so much more.
Up to version 8.3 ProShot was able to access all camera modules and capture also RAW/DNG images.
In version 8.4 the access to all modules is broken for the Axon 30 Ultra.
The developed images are so much better than the JPEGs out of the stock app.
Especially the 35mm equivalent module (they call it 2x) is phantstic with a huge amount of details: sample on Flickr
Camera2 Probe only detects the main camera (main 1x).
OpenCamera also detects only the main 1x camera.
All GCam mods I found that work can see only the 1x and the 5x module.
Does anybody know another camera app that is able to access all camera modules and can capture RAW/DNG?
I also tried many Gcams but all have the same issue ( only 1x and 5x are available )
I found a litte tool on a telegram GCam channel (NGCam) in form of an APK based on this code here that reads out camera data (I think via Camera2 API).
From the output it gets clear why typical 3rd party camera apps see only the front and the main back camera and the other three modules (0.5x, 1.2x and 5x) reamin invisible to camera apps.
This is in my opinion a very problematic approach as we are forced to stay with more or less bad stock camera apps that do not justify spending a lot of money for so called flagship devices.

GCam is not typical camera app (like OpenCamera). GCam seems to query the modules like the tool I used the overview does. The typical camera apps only seem to query the visible camera IDs.
For some reasons the Samsung GW3 sensors are not working.

I hope some developer will fix this
Arnova or BSG for sure could do
With version 8.4.1 of ProShot the access to all modules/lenses is restored again an with that the ability to capture RAW/DNG images on all four modules on the back and with that to get the most out of the hardware the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra includes. As I am in the beta program there I am not sure if this version is generally rolled out yet.
Not as great as if one of the GCams would support all moduls/lenses but something I can live with very well.

Thx a lot for the information
When searching for an app to capture CinemaDNG I found the free MotionCam. The app detects all camera modules on the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra and is able to capture RAW/DNGs. Also RAW video for later processing in DaVinci Resolve can be recorded. The workflow is not easy but it is a very interesting opportunity.
Also image bursts can be captured that can be developed to a single image with a lot of settings to control the result. This result can also be preserbed in form of a DNG for later processing.
One drawback is that not all the meta data (EXIF) is written to the resulting files.
Some samples of developed images from MotionCam

After the official OTA Android 12 upgrade all four camera modules on the back work fine in GCam (before the two Samsung ISOCELL GW3 sensors did not work, the 0.5x and the 1.2x)
