What is a VOL file? Having a storage problem . . .

I have an 8000 MB storage card and I keep practically everything (pictures, music, big programs like HTC Home Customizer) on the card. The card has about 20 MB of room on it still. Lately however I have been getting error messages that my device storage is critically low. The device storage available is 113.55 MB and I am using 113.30 MB. I have tried locating large files in storage on my device to either move them to my card or delete them, but i can't find anything that would be taking up that much room. When I search my device for files larger than 64 kb, there are a couple pictures in main storage and everything else is on the card. However, when I used file explorer to search for files myself, I found a 16 MB file in the Windows folder called: mxip_initdb.vol. The properties say it is a VOL file that is a read only, hidden, system file. I also found a folder for "Volatile" in the application data folder but have no idea what it is for. It's been awhile since I put anything new on my device, so it may be for a program I forgot about, but I am wondering if it is some spyware or something. I just can't find any files in the device's main storage memory and I am at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] APK's stored in internal memory but there on sdcard

As most of you do I have space problem with the N1, and there is something I dont understand
inside /mnt directoy is obb, sdcard , asec and secure.
Now to my understand my entire sdcard contents is under "sdcard" directory
however both "/mnt/asec" and "/mnt/secure" are outside that directory and they contain apk's and some other files.
Here is my delima if application gets installed on the sdcard it still dumps the apk files in the "asec" directory which mean it doesn't matter if i install the application on the sdcard it will still take alot of space.
Is this correct and if so can i create a symbolic link the directory and dump in the sdcard itself instead of wasting viable internal memory space?
No, you're wrong. /mnt/asec/ mounts on /sdcard/.android_secure. So the APKs are on SD card. And you can't properly link the /data/data/ or the /data/dalvik-cache to FAT, the apps won't work - or the phone will crash when you unmount the FAT.
This is why there is Darktremor's A2SD/XPART/Link2SD/many others.
ok.
But how come if uninstall application I get free space even though they are on the sdcard?
edit: Or rather the bigger question is that i have plenty of space on my sdcard as i install more and more application some of the application space creep into the internal memory is there a way to know what is going on and how to prevent that space from being occupied in the first place.
You can't.
Application space is split into:
1) APK. (this is the APK itself - the installation file)
2) Data. (this is the data that the app creates and/or stores between and during uses)
3) Dalvik-cache. (this is a space that system uses to run the app)
Each installed app has all 3 parts.
Whatever you do on stock or CM7 ROM, you can't get parts 2 and 3 to SD. The only way to do it is using the add-ons mentioned in my previous post - Darktremor's A2SD/XPART/Link2SD/many others. They all do the same thing - given additional EXT partition on SD card, they selectively move any of the 3 parts for any app to the EXT partition, freeing phone's internal memory. Of course, if you don't have EXT partition on your SD card - you need to create it, repartition the card, to be able to use any of those add-ons.
thanks again

installing app to sdcard2?

How can I make an app install onto sdcard2 instead of the internal storage (named as sdcard)? I have a few games that require large files and I would like to keep them on my 32gb sdcard rather than the internal one. Any help would be appreciated.
Apps2SD
10characterminimumtopostsoignorethis.
TitaniumBackup has that feature as well, just long press the app you want moved.
The app does not differentiate between the internal memory and the external SD card. It only allows apps to be moved to the internal storage. The problem lies with the fact that the internal storage is named "sdcard" which then means that apps automatically install their data to it instead of the actual external microsd

You are very right on that statement, but it has to be some sort of app that move applications from internal memory (sdcard in this case) to the external memory (sdcard2)
When I open file explorer in android I open the folder 'sdcard' and inside it contains the folder 'sdcard2' and basically sdcard2 is empty unless you copy/move files manually to it.
I have 16GB on sdcard2 and 4GB on sdcard and I'm running out of space on sdcard with not knowledge on how to move some big apps to sdcard2.
what is the obsession with app2sd?
this phone has 4 GIGABYTES of internal storage dedicated to apps and data.
i have never once had any urge to run apps from sdcard....i just dont get it

Linking apps doesn't work for me

I did everything in tutorial to increasing internal memory in my Galaxy Ace (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2412319).
Everything worked properly but after linking app to the 2nd partition it doesn't reduce size of the app in internal memory at all. I kind of don't understand how the whole moving/linking works or where I made mistake, so sorry if it's so obvious.
(Sorry for my bad English, still learning.)
same here
1.
The apps use data/data, data/app, data/lib all of which are on phone memory (system), internal memory is the storage space built in to the phone for your music, game dlc, vids etc. Link2SD allows you to move app and lib and replace them with a 0kb symbolic link and moving the actual files from system to external sd thus saving space.
To move the data/data requires Link2SD plus and this is where the majority of the app is.
Foldermount allows you to move data from internal sd (not phone memory like Link2SD) to external sd. I haven't tested if it'll link system folders.
I hope that clarifies a few things.

Internal Storage

A bit noob here. I want to see what are the files in my internal storage.
I noticed 26GB is already used up but when I browse the internal storage disk using file explorer I can only see some 2GB files (apps and its data + some pictures and music).
What used up the other 20GB+?
Thanks in advance.
When I used my 950F 128 GB for the first time,, I imediately checked the available storage, it was 112 GB out of the box, so, those 16 GB were used by the firmware, samsung apps,, carrier apps, the available storage varies by country and carrier, also, the native file manager may not show all files in your device, as many files are hidden, I use x-plore, it shows all files
