I have 2 cars. My newer Ford has AA but my older SUV doesn't and I drive the SUV a lot more. But it does have a nice audio system with BT.
Can I use my phone as a Android auto stand alone and will it be able to read text messages, FB messenger like it does on the Ford?
I managed to get the Android auto to start when it recognizes the SUV BT but does not read or notify me of messages.
Thanks.
I'm not sure if you should get notifications for different types of messages compatible with AA during navigation (when the nav app is displayed), but I'm sure you should see the notifications on AA's main screen. As far as I know, even on car's screen, only the first line of the message will be previewed and there's no possibility to see the entire message, even when the car is stopped. When you press on the message's notification Google Assistant will try to read it to you.

Actually my Ford Cmax reads the messages. Text and FB messenger. Then it gives me a choice to reply.
The Nav is not in use.
I'm trying to replicate this on my phone with the AA for screen app

Hi, before I buy one wanted to find out three things if someone could assist.
-With voice commands and driving, is it true I still need to press an on screen button to send a message to someone via SMS
-With voice commands, can you schedule an appointment with a synced calendar other than Googles. I sync to an exchange calendar and when I played with google now a while back, it only created appointments via voice to the google calendar.
-with active notifications, what happens if you have three notifications? Does it also always show the screen when you take it out of your pocket. Hoping that it does?
thanks all
Voice commands will work similar to how they have on other Google NOW capable devices. So yes, you still need to press "Send message" to send it. As for the exchange stuff. If you could do it on another device, you can do it on this one.
Active notifications will show what you tell them to show. There are settings that allow you to choose what apps display. As the active notifications use the proximity sensor to decide when to display, it will indeed show whenever it's removed from your pocket. If you have multiple notifications, dragging your active lock upward will bring you to the app that produced the most recent notification.
Is that about as clear as mud? I suck at explaining things. Lmk if you need any clarification.
Thanks, just curious on two parts. If you have multiple notifications, the only icon you see is the most recent. The only way to know the others is by swiping the status bar I assume?
If you have no notifications, I assume the screen will not turn on, is that correct?
thanks

If you have no notifications the phone will show you the time when you pick it up or pull it from out of your pocket.

If you have multiple ones the others (older) show up at the bottom of the active display.

I'm wondering if you get all notifications on the Gear live or only the apps that had been updated to work with the watch?
I'm specially wondering about 3er party SMSs clients and other like Whatapp and Instagram that I use a lot.
Thanks
All apps. Essentially any app that generates notification on phone.
You can select apps from which you don't want to receive notification on watch thru android wear settings on your phone.

As stated in google io:
Wear plugs into the 4.3+ notification system. Any notification generated will get converted to a "wear" notification/card
Additionally, any apps that use "notification actions" (not sure what the offical name is) such as; "delete" and "archive" in gmail notifications will get converted to "action buttons" in wear that call the exact same code on the phone, thus producing the same results. This is useful to remember for apps that have notification actions on your phone but haven't updated to support wear.
Additional functionality such as "display extended cards" or "stack multiple notifications" (including the thing that hangouts can do where tapping would bring you a history of the chat on the watch itself) or "reply by voice" types is what would require an "update to the code"...THIS is what people are looking for in apps that "update to support wear".
[**] for instance, whatsapp notification would show up, whatsapp does not have any notifications action buttons on my phone so all I would see is "open in phone" (probably) as a button in my wear device. If they update the app we could tap the wear card to see the full conversation (including the full message rather than just what you would normally see in the notification slide on your phone) slide to the right to get a button to "reply by voice".
It uses the new notification access thingy. All notifications get sent to watch. Can exclude apps

I started using Google Messenger recently, and one thing I noticed, is that when the phone is off to the side, and I get a new text message, the screen doesn't pop on, like it did with stock Messages and Textra.
Is there some Settings somewhere I need to enable that ?

From my experience, you need the Tasker app and set up a profile to turn the screen on. That is the only way I have found that works consistently. You will also need the Secure Settings app.
The Tasker app can seem overwhelming, but if you take your time and read some of the help files, it is actually pretty easy. I use the same app to turn my phone to vibrate when the phone links to my work wifi.

I'm using an alcatel idol 3 running Android 6.01, hangouts 14.0.1.136618992, and Android Auto 2.0.642304. Maps and Audible work fine in displaying and playing over my Rav 4 audio unit (stock, not an AA enabled audio unit). However, I see the Hangouts message on my AA phone screen ("new message from Mitch Fox," for example (substituted any contact who sends me a Hangouts message), but when I press the arrow key next top the Hangouts message I see the Google dots circling for a moment, then the screen returns to AA screen. I never hear the message. I have checked what i believe are all applicable settings and permissions. Am I using this incorrectly? Should it be playing automatically when it arrives. In any case, why don't I hear it over my Bluetooth-linked stock Rav 4 audio unit? Thanks
2011 E92 BMW 325d on latest possible f/w & s/w.*
According to BMW bluetooth compatibility my Note8 will work for all features I want.*
My idrive has all options: enhanced bluetooth, voice dialling, Office, music streaming etc.
Issue is email. I know the car will only display email if using the native email app, which I'm happy to do.
Start the car, the devices pair up, I see all my mail.*
After that, if I receive new email, there doesn't seem to be a sync?*
I feel my Note8 vibrate and know I have new email but idrive still shows the same list of emails that were there when starting the car.*
SMS texts and system messages from the BMW app I see on the idrive as soon as they arrive.
I've discovered that to get new emails to display, I must open email on the phone and delete an email, only then will the email list on the idrive refresh.
Swiping down and refreshing emails on the phone doesn't work.
What is it that happens when only deleting mail, to make this sync/refresh happen but should be happening all the time?
Notifications are set to on, Note8 on Pie.
Can anyone suggest anything that might help with this?
Is there a 3rd party app that could force this sync upon email arrival?
Anyone? Someone?
Any ideas at all?

Does your car support Android Auto?
Have you tried deleting your phone from the car system and pairing device again?
Try clearing cache in recovery mode (phone)?
Maybe see if you can clear the sync cache?
Have another car to try to see if the same problem?
Last resort is backup phone and factory reset device.
Thanks BluePhnx
No Android Auto, car is 2011 and too old (Like me)
Yup, several times.
Yup also the Bluetooth cache and Bluetooth test.
Sync cache? How do I do that?
It seems not many cars have the ability to present email - Tried Audi's, VW's and Mercs - basically every car in the works car park Even the newer Beemers require a subscription to Office 365.
Factory reset also tried.
Tried Ford also, they all seem to do SMS but not SMS and email...
