Is it possible to encrypt recovery while keeping phone decrypted? - Redmi K20 Pro / Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro Questions & Answe

While i was trying to flash aospa extended i forgot to flash fcrypt disabler. I booted into recovery once again to flash it. Now my twrp begs for password while in security section it says phone not encrypted. What do you guys think?

this is because your data is encrypted and you should format (not wipe) data to remove password.

but i dont need to right?

The question is, what do you want. Do you want to have an encrypted phone, or do you want to be permanently decrypted? There is no need to permanently decrypt the phone if you prefer to remain encrypted. You can easily user custom ROMs and be encrypted.
Have your been flashing DFE scripts because you want to be decrypted, or because you've followed an inaccurate guide that says you should flash it?

How to decrypt on CM12.1? That boot.img shouldn't work

I decrpted my phone right after i got it. And since then , i'd been messing with different roms until I flashed CM 12.1 again. All because i forgot CM forces encryption. And now i'm stuck, I don't want to go back to stock to decrypt my phone. But i guess the way to decrypt requires the boot.img in accordance with your build. But since i'm not on stock, How can I decrypt my phone again. I would prefer performance, or what rom should I flash to get the best performance (smoothness) without forced encryption.

Follow the instructions in the OP. And remember to do "fastboot format userdata" after you flash it. This will wipe the contents of your SDcard and do a factory reset on your ROM.

Yep, thanks. I found it yesterday and i can confirm it works.

how to decrypt in twrp?

I have my 3t unlocked and twrp flashed, but every time I boot into it, it indicates not able to decrypt data partition. Even after flashing with sideload, the pin which I set in preinstalled OS couldn't unlock it. Tried to disable boot up pin didn't help me out. Any hints?
Thankc

It sounds like he just wants TWRP to be able to access his encrypted data, not to actually wipe and decrypt.
jcadduono said:
If your device isn't decrypting in TWRP, chances are you still have the old crypto key format from the 3.5.1 release firmware.
You can solve this by updating to 3.5.3 and changing your boot up password in your device OS's settings.
By changing your password after updating to 3.5.3 or newer, your OS will rewrite your crypto key to be compatible with TWRP.
You are free to disable your password after this if you don't want one, and TWRP will decrypt with the default password.

@zphou Did you do that stuff, like the TWRP thread tells you to?
Sounds like you need to factory reset. Thats how you remove encryption. Ive done it before on my other phone. Perhaps make a quick manual backup of the folders on your phone or use the splendid Huawei Backup app on the play store and throw that on your PC before resetting. You can restore apps to the exact state as before your reset. Encryption should be removed afterwards.

Yes. I followed the instructions and now with latest public beta, which is 7.0. I still can not access to data partition in recovery. Luckly, I could flash 3rd party rom with sideload, the only issue is not able to boot into system. So I have to flash the public 7.0 beta.

[ROM][US997][Stock] LG-US997 20A ROM - FILES UP NOW

In westwood24 style, I decided to create a flashable zip for us. We do not have a kdz yet, so westwood24 is unable to create the zip yet, as he no longer owns the device.
However, since I do, I decided to do system dumps of the updated images, and provide them to you in a flashable format, in his fashion.
I have tested this on my own device (US997v17a KDZ -> TWRP -> This ZIP)
What this means is that you can flash this like you would his zips, its not an upgrade, its a full ROM, with bootloader and everything.
It is the closest we are going to get to a KDZ, until we actually get one.
The boot.img is prepatched to remove rtcd, and disable forceencrypt, and also disables LG anti-custom-recovery script, so that you can keep TWRP, and mount your data in it.
This is NOT Melina kernel, this is stock kernel with the above patches applied only. If you would like Melina kernel, you will have to install it afterwards (but remember to reboot recovery first, see note in TWRP thread about writing boot more than once in a session)
Download [ My Server | Mega ]
For those who want 100% stock, here is an unpatched boot.img. Flash it in TWRP, or extract it and flash in fastboot.
But be aware what this means for /data and TWRP.
PAQ (Probably [going to be] Asked Questions):
Q: Can I flash this over v17a without wiping data?
A: In theory, yes. Untested. Be sure to wipe Dalvik Cache.
Q: Can I flash this over v16a or eariler without wiping data?
A: Probably not. Try it? Be sure to wipe Dalvik Cache.
Q: Can I flash this over (Fulmics/Lineage/RR/etc) without wiping data?
A: No.
Q: Does this include the new Oreo bootloader?
A: Yes.
Q: What does "forceencrypt" mean?
A: It means every time you boot, if you tried to format /data in recovery and unencrypted it, it gets re-encrypted. Disabling this allows you to have an unencrypted /data so that you can continue to use TWRP without losing /data.
Q: I can't sideload this zip, but I can sideload westwood24's. What gives?
A: No idea and I wish I knew. Copy it to your SDCard or Internal Data for now.
Q: I'm stuck at the bootloader. Did I brick?
A: No. First boot will take a while at the bootloader. Please give it up to 15 minutes.
Q: LG G6 ThinQ?
A: https://www.xda-developers.com/lg-g6-thinq-rebranding/
Q: I cannot mount data in TWRP. What can I do?
A: You need to use Melina TWRP rel_o1 or newer.
Special thanks go out to westwood24.
If my releases help you, please leave a thanks. If you are able, please consider a tip (check the small link in my sig).
Thanks! Looking forward to this.
I'm assuming that i need to have my bootloader unlocked in order to use this zip.

Yes, same as westwood24's zips.
I apologize for my ignorance, this does not preserve the already installed TWRP, correct? We need to reinstall TWRP and root in the same fashion we previously did?
Thanks for your support.
Just checked westwood24 posts and found my answer there in his installation instruction.
Thanks for this! I did a full wipe coming from 17a and it worked flawlessly using your oreo TWRP. Used Magisk 16.4 beta for root.

I don't usually flash modded kennels, but I'm interested in trying yours. Does it support magisk and Oreo?
Installing this tried to install the oreo system, but failed because of encryption. But some parts already has been changed. Booting was hanging on LG logo.
So I tried to install back my old version. Did also replace some parts, but after booting it told me the encryption key was correct but some data modified. The only possibility was to wipe everything

Downgrading from LG Oreo encryption to LG Nougat encryption will force you to wipe data.
If you don't care about encryption, wipe data in TWRP to decrypt, then reboot recovery, then install this zip.
If you do want encryption, flash this zip, reboot recovery, flash the unmodified boot, reboot system (will wipe root and twrp)

So I'm assuming Encryption works the same way on Oreo as it does on Nougat?
On Nougat, after the bootloader is unlocked (or twrp flashed or one of these steps), the option to encrypt is gone from the Fingerprints and Security settings menu. Only the "Encrypt SD Card" option remains.
So this means no chance for encryption on Oreo with root + twrp?

Encryption option remains. But no, encrypting will break /data in TWRP. Root may work if you root before you encrypt.
We cannot decrypt LG's data with TWRP yet.

Unfortunately since the US Cellular version can't be rooted because the bootloader isn't able to be unlocked we can't use this method we would have to wait until someone is able to create a kdz to flash.

@Displayer
Your data from the last install appears to be encrypted. If you have a backup the easiest way to resolve the issue is to format your storage. You could also use the All in One tool and use its encryption removal option. Please keep in mind that it will wipe out all of your memes, so hopefully those are backed up.

I mean, i formatted to have a custom ROM booting, encrypting my data. I can use the phone, my pin code works in android but it's impossible to decrypt with TWRP...
Édit : found that message from argraur on telegram, so basically we have to wait for an updated twrp ? "Android release 9.0.0_r36 (r37) with May security patch has updated FBE encryption that breaks decryption in TWRP."

That doesn't even make sense. Twrp will not decrypt your phone.
Install Miui again, backup your data, to your desktop, by manually dragging your files over.
Go here and download DM-VERITY, FORCED ENCRYPTION, AND DISC QUOTA DISABLER you will use it to flash between updates or for dirty flashing Miui updates.
Next go back to TWRP the choose format and type yes reboot to TWRP ( you will se a message that says you have no OS are you sure?) Yes, reboot to TWRP
TWRP is not your issue, go read
and read the first comment here
Format storage, or wait for the TWRP and you still need to the format storage, Again a TWRP update will not resolve the issue. We have all had this exact issue.
I'm using another workaround:
With the all in one tool, we can flash .zip from a PC.
So I could install a custom kernel file from my pc directly into phone without loosing data.
Annoying thing is that I need the PC... Can't flash files that are in phone memory... Not such a big issue...
Another question, can I make a backup from the PC? Used to do it via twrp, but it is not safe with that issue...

How to remove encryption in OrangeFox?

Everytime I boot into recovery it asks for my pin lock code. Entering my pin everytime into the recovery is mildly irritating. Anyway to remove this?
Do I have format data everytime I flash a new rom? It is a pain to backup my data everytime to a PC when flashing a new rom.

You don't need to format data unless you want to remove encryption, but it's advisable to at least wipe data.
When wiping data TWRP will leave the external storage intact (even though external storage is stored in the data partition). So app and ROM data is lost, but personal data is kept.
When you format data, then personal data in external storage is lost too.

If I used pattern unlock instead of pin it wouldn't have encrypted the rom?
In the linked thread it says to format data and then flash the file. Suppose I want to install a new rom.
The current process for this phone is:
1. Flash MIUI Chinese rom.
2. Wipe everything except vendor and internal storage.
3. Flash rom of choice and gapps.
4. Format data.
5. Boot the device.
At which step should I flash that file? Flashing the decryption file is after formatting data (step 4), right?
What if I already am on a custom rom? Flashing the file would decrypt the rom or not?
Sorry for asking so many questions. The previous device I had was Redmi Note 4 (mido) so it wasn't necessary to do all these things.

My previous phone was a OnePlus 3, and so this was never an issue with that. After that phone had a fatal accident I had a Redmi 6a for 3 months while I waited for a an all screen with SD855 to be released. All I did with that was install TWRP and Magisk. So I've never actually tried to permanently remove encryption, so don't take what I'm saying as definite.
Not all ROMs require you to format data. I'm on the AOSiP ROM and it wasn't required. I'll move to the Havoc ROM soon, and again it's not required to format data.
My understanding is that you will have an unencrypted phone, even after setting a pin, after flashing that script, so I assume that it would be unnecessary to format data where a ROM install instruction tells you to. This is usually done to ensure the data partition is unencrypted before flashing.
I think setting a pattern also encrypts the phone. I have seen a guide on how to replicate the pattern using the keyboard in TWRP, but can't find it again now.
