Photo Lights / Portait Mode with Night Shift - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Since the Pixel 5 had those issues introduced, do we expect to receive those to 4/Xl?

I imagine at some point they will be introduced to older pixels certainly the pixel 4/XL they have the specs to be able process them.

These will come in a feature pack in the near future.

My 2 Cents till now about the M20Po

Well.. here goes another post, right?
Just needed to say my 2cents about this phone which i was waiting for impatiently.
To be clear, I've owned the Mate 9, Mate 10 & P20pro loved them all when they came out. But this is a different story. I'm also on .122, no gluegate issues, no face unlock issues, or other (guess i'm lucky).
- Bluetooth issues when connecting to my car (WTF!). Connection is done well for normal phone connections, but to play media, i had to put in airplane mode and reconnect 3-4 times.
- The display more like the font DPI and Notifications... what the hell Huawei? It's ugly. When you try to change the DPI those notifications are atrocious.
- Notification bugs on lockscreen : It's hard to sweep them out, to delete them or even to read them.
- Status bar : Huawei could of implemented, like on the Pixel 3XL , that if you want to hide the notch, have another line appear where you could see all the notifications. Not ideal... but an "option". Or choose the icons you want to appear, and not needing to go ADB style in your phone.
- Browsing the net on Chrome : Again a DPI issue, which doesn't fully, logically and normally set the page correctly.
- Camera : Sorry to say, but it's not a wow for my daily usage. I'll give it a couple more testing days, but in general i'm not impressed by the focus speed of moving objects (kids & dogs). Still images yes, for sure. But when you live a life as a family guy you need to be quick to snap that right moment when your kid or dog is doing something crazy. And it just doesn't make it happen.
- Camera lenses : I miss the BW lens honestly speaking. Changing it to a wide angle might please some people, but the BW pictures i used to take with the phone on the go are gone. Those pictures used to be great (+1 for P20Pro)
- Speakers : Dual ? *cough* *cough*. I feel the are muffled, not clear.
- Wifi Connection : Now that's a funny one... i have a 500/150 connection. On wifi my Note9 goes up to 487/127. My Mate 20p does 80/65. Once i go into recovery and clean the cache.. it hits 380/120. Then messes up again during the day.
- Dual SIm : Sometimes i have my second SIM card having issues. The "not registered on network" kind. I have to switch to airplane mode and back to make it work. If i don't see it right away people can't reach me..
- GPS : Works great, really.
- Battery : So yes.... it has has a great battery, not to forget that you need to go into the settings and put the apps you really don't want to get closed in manual. Otherwise, baby cams, waze, and other notifications don't come through.
I really expected another experience than this, I thought they learned and listened to their customers, but they didn't. I hope they will resolve the issues down the line. I feel sorry for the guys that have a Gluegate phone, i just think that is unacceptable for a phone with such a price tag.
I really hope Huawei are gonna do something about it, this is why i'm keeping it in the drawer waiting for a new firmware. It took the p20pro 3 4 firmwares to make it a great phone.
Back to my Note9 in a couple of days once i finished really testing this camera out.
Hey for the notch you can change this in under settings click, display, then more display settings then notch. Should fix it for you
Android auto works mostly but not for the phone option. That's my grumble right now

Thanks, but did that. I think there is an option on the 3XL that the notch goes down a bit, and then you can see the notifications like a normal status bar. But you lose screen size by doing that... i read that somewhere, but can't find it.
Sounds almost exactly like my post. Pixel 3 comes at the end of the week. Sadly only the 64gb version in black, but you can't have everything.

Yea, read yours which gave me the inspiration to type mine. Funny that you mention the 3xl...I've been looking and reading reviews on it for the last hour.
3 things scare me though
1. The battery life, 2. The lack of RAM and 3. non dual SIM. On the last point, I can't understand why having an eSIM and a physical SIM they didn't put two IMEI like the iPhones...crazy. but that camera is really tempting. Been testing the M20Pro Vs my Note 9 cameras this evening... I have to admit I still prefer the m20 pro's.

I get where you are coming from on this. Unfortunately I have the glue issue, but non of the others.
The internet speed thing, well my internet connection at home is 100mb and this is enough for me.
As for the camera, the Note 9 will blur photos of almost anything especially kids and pets, and even more in low light. The note 9 camera is actually pretty terrible and I have one as well.
If you want photos of kids and pets, only the Pixel 1 / 2 /3 will do that.
I do miss the Monochrone but not for monochrome photos, I don't rate those, but for image quality. Low light, especially night mode, is much worse on the mate, almost unusable actually.
I can come across online as nasty or confrontational but I do truly hope you find an experience you deserve from a phone, I know the struggle of trying to find the right phone, I have been buying almost every single flagship barring iphones for years and still not there.
The mate 20 pro with the versatility of the wide lens was almost it, but if my replacement comes and has issues, I will stick with my Note 9 and buy a pixel 1 for photos as the pixel 3 camera is not really improved on it. It takes shots of moving subjects perfectly and low light shots are taken very well as well.

I took my p20p out yesterday, and tested the 3. I have to admit that the p20p takes better pictures out of the bunch. Never tested a pixel before due to the lack of dual sim. Butbim really curious to test it out this time. Just worried about the battery, ram and well....missing the dual SIM.
The note 9 takes great pictures when in full sunlight but tested inside pictures last night. And I discovered it had a lot of flairs due the lighting. Mate 20 I feel has a lot of noise in general.
But most of my requirements are GPS , BT music (car), camera (kids and all) , battery and logical easy clean UI....and of course a good screen.
I neaaaaaaarly , really neaaaaaaarly hesitated to get the iPhone XSmax dual....but my soul and geek mind started playing rehab from Amy Winehouse in my head. I haven't touched (except my wife's) an iPhone for over 5 years.
Last night I was on the verge of keeping the Mate 20, but turned the phone on this morning to a list of weird and empty notifications which cemented my decision. If the Pixel 3 and 3 XL were made by Huawei and running pure Google software, you would never need to buy anything else.

Mate 20 RS – Thoughts from a Developer

I don't normally comment on phones but this is my first Huawei phone (I did have a Huawei watch a few years ago). Despite the relatively hard to obtain device in North America, the*Mate 20 RS*is the most technically advanced phone out there and in 2019 I expect Huawei to continue their technical lead. I have resisted using Huawei phones in the past (partially due to potentially security concerns but also with other phones being better - from my perspective). However the P20 earlier in 2018 was tempting but the Porsche Design version of the Mate 20 Pro was irresistible, especially as I fortunate enough to be able to obtain one at an airport store (far below the high prices eBay is currently showing).
Quick Review*
Overall the Mate 20 RS is fast, highly configurable and a joy to use and look at. The battery life is the best I have ever had on any device (without a supplementary battery case). Moreover I am on the Dec 2018 security release of Android Pie (so Huawei seems to be keeping up to date).*
I had an issue with the Summit 2 after I upgraded to Android 9.0 (on my prior device).* This was sufficiently concerning that I started to look for a new phone as I suspected it was specific to Android 9.0 on my specific phone. The battery drain on the Summit 2 was severely reduced from Android 8.0 to 9.0 (on the same phone). On Android 8 (same phone) the Summit 2 battery life was OK.*
After switching to the Mate 20 RS, the battery on the Summit 2 has been really good. I can't really explain it other than potential differences in Android 9.0 and bluetooth. Regardless I am very happy with the battery life of the Summit 2 with the Mate 20 RS!
A Developer's Perspective
As a developer I did find a few things:
Hooking up to ADB on my Surface Laptop 2 was not immediate. Huawei does things differently - including default options.
Notification Lister Service - Specific to Huawei phones I had a heck of a time every time I updated my app (while debugging). I was able to implement a manual workaround but Huawei seemed to behave differently than other Android phones. Interestingly, in their latest .171 firmware update, the issues now seems fixed!
TTS and Sensor Detection - My speak TTS only when lying flat did not work. I eventually traced it to my logic that seemed to work on all other Android devices but not on Huawei. Admittedly it was my logic bug, but the Sensor readings from Huawei appears to be different (perhaps staleness/caching to effect performance/battery savings). It turned out well as I was forced to fix my logic bugs and now the features works really well for me.
Should I be concerned about these messages from LogCat ? : )
A need to focus on Software
The Mate 20 RS is a beauty as a hardware device. One key area to improve is on the software side. Huwaei seemed to have made some interesting decisions on default options, what options to not allow to be configured and design choices.
Settings are highly configurable but some default settings seem to not be intuitive (or at least consistent with other Android Devices).
Battery Information - they provide a LOT of information. They should look at Sony on how they provide estimated time remaining (graph). Moreover have multiple menus to drill into power consumption seem more complex than it should be.
Always On Display - it is too restrictive - allowing 3rd party apps to show information should be allowed.
Buggy? - I cannot get the "Magazine Unlock" to work as it initially did (after I installed a few 3rd party themes).
Bloatware - there are to many redundant apps - Huawei doesn't really need to have their own version of every app. Instead focus those resources on making the other areas world class to have a truly world class hardware/software product!
The Smart Screen hides the LED notification - perhaps design the next version to show it.
English Canada does not seem to be supported in the key Huawei app!
What will be Next Phone?
I typically change phones 2-3 times a year. However in 2019 I am looking forward to the Sony XZ4, the next Mate 30 Pro and Foldable phones. Note I also carry an Apple Watch 4 (LTE) that needs to be connected to an Apple phone (X) that I don't really use/carry otherwise. A key feature for me is battery life. Huawei leads in terms of battery life but I don't think I can yet get to a magical 2-day battery life with the Mate 20 RS. My next device would need to be at least as good (which will be very challenging IMO).

What would you change about the Mi9T/K20 Pro?

Non-serious question: What would you change about the K20 Pro given the chance?
Things I'd personally go for would be:
1) A read-only secondary bootloader chip with a jumper pinhole under the card slot. To end all brickings.
2) MicroSD support.
3) No tapered edges of the glass panel; perfectly flat for use with glass screen protectors.
4) Stereo speakers.
5) Inclusion of charging limits / intelligent charging settings within MIUI.
6) IR blaster. Can't understand why they removed this.
7) USB3.0. Current 2.0 speeds are 30MB/s. Transfering GBs takes a relatively long time, more so due to MTP.
8) Digital SIM, just do away with archaic SIM cards.
9) Better vibration motor.
10) As others have said Android One as an optional firmware.
I don't understand why they put the ultra-wide lens at the bottom of the triple camera setup. If you're taking a portrait photo with 1 hand you can sometimes see your finger in the view finder... So I would change the order of the camera setup at the back and I would position the flash next to the camera module instead of below it because I sometimes cover it with my finger when I need the flashlight.
Besides that I'd love to see a 90 Hz display, a 4500/5000 mah battery and dual speakers
Clean Google OS
Google camera
Timely security updates.
A decent visible notification LED would have been great.

These are the only two points for me. But:
- We will see if 90hz is possible one day with this screen. I tried 72 hz and it worked good
- There is a notification LED, but not visible from front. Only from top
So no real big points for me
5.2 inch screen would be nice, phones are getting too big for my comfort ?

I was surprised to find the K20 Pro is the same size as my old 5.9" Redmi 5 Plus - the 6.39" is due to the screen being taller with minimal bezel rather than actually bigger.
Screen size seems a rather dividing area. I think the best remedy is having two panel sizes for any given model. ±6.5" seems to be the new size with flagships this year. Some manufacturers do two panel sizes but usually put better hardware in a larger "Pro" variant.
I'd like a Plus sized version, 6.7-6.9", with 5000ah battery and sd card.
Better popup cam/ rear cam, mostly. Coming from an Huawei P30 it's somewhat disappointing and taking good photos with my Mi 9T Pro can be hard. Higher hertz screen would be nice but it isn't neccesary and i rather take the better battery life of a 60 hertz screen. Really happy outside of those small annoyances.
I would only change 3 things:
1) Replace the popup camera with a punchhole camera, like the Galaxy S10. Works better with face unlock.
2) Replace the on-screen fingerprint scanner with a normal fingerprint scanner on the back or on the side. These scanners are faster, more accurate and therefore easier to use.
3) Clean Android OS, though that is easily fixed with a custom rom.

90Hz mod exists atm, although in beta I think..
K30 appeared end of last year. I like that they're bringing back the MicroSD and moving the FP reader to the side but dayumn, they cut the pop-up camera and AMOLED. Guessing a Pro model might appear. No mention of IR Blaster.

This again + 120Hz screen. Nothing else.
You're wrong about #7, it copies much faster than 30MB/s. You're being limited by another factor. This device has usb 3.0.
Assuming we are talking about realistic design choices that will not affect price (i.e. not "10000mah battery" or 1000mp camera")
1. I personally REALLY hate notches, so I would like to keep the popup camera.
2. I see absolutely no benefit in under screen fingerprint sensor, it's more gimmick than functional, better to have a regular one on the back.
3. release one firmware and one model, or at most 2, china and global.
4. MicroSD
5. Software, software, software.
Other comments I saw here are either unrealistic, or are only bells and whistles that will increase the cost but will hardly affect usability.
I would rather save 50 euros on the cost of the device than pay for 90-120hz panels.
What are they good for? fluidly scrolling your menus? "gaming" on a 6 inch screen? I don't get this refresh rate obsession.
I'd rather have longer screen on time and cheaper phone to watch my 60 fps youtube videos on.
Looks like the refresh rate become the new more=better sales point after RAM, and camera MP more or less equalized.
Also I disagree about stereo speakers, who uses tiny phone speakers anyway?
Just assholes that blast their sh*tty music in public?
There's a headphone jack and BT, that's all you need for listening to something that is not your ringtone or alarm.

Every spec list I've seen clearly states USB2.0; gsmarena included - even the Pro Premium has 2.0. I've not seen any USB3 version of this phone anywhere.
File transfers top out at 30MB/s on a USB3 port with the included cable to/from an SSD on two separate machines... which is about expected for USB2 - the theoretical limits are higher but never materialise.

My "review" of X2 compared to my Redmi Note 3 Pro

Realme X2 vs Redmi Note 3 Pro
This is a short overview/rant about Realme X2 compared to my old phone Redmi Note 3 Pro. Some stuff is better, some worse, some just disappointing.
From now on Realme X2 will be referred to as X2 and Redmi Note 3 Pro as Redmi.
== Screen
X2 has high resolution OLED while Redmi has a 1080P LCD
Despite X2 having better screen on paper, in real world use I find it less practical than Redmi.
Here is why:
1. X2 minimum brightness is VERY bright, almost unusable in night setting, even with dark themes and all that. This is most likely a software issue but still annoying at night.
Max brightness on X2 is much brighter than Redmi though, so for day usage it's a win. Had no issues seeing things on X2 at all, while on Redmi somtimes I had to place it strategically so sun is away from screen.
2. X2 OLED color lag. When browsing dark content and scrolling (say on a website or reddit), you can see dark colors sorta "dragging"/ghosting along. No idea if this is OLED or just X2 limitation but it is very noticable. Not a big deal but compared to Redmi LCD I'm used to, a bit annoying.
3. Reading white text on black background at night causes "halo" effect around text on X2. Although it makes sense, it makes text harder to read, I had to actually switch to black text/white bg mode at night to read more comfortably. No such issue on Redmi since LCD is evenly lit even on black pixels. This wouldn't be a problem if min brightness wasn't so bright still.
== Flashlight
Not much to say here, Redmi LED flashlight is much brighter than X2. If I had to eyeball it, I'd say at least 1.5x brighter, maybe even 2x. For non photo use (searching stuff in the dark, shining farther, walking in the dark, actual usages a standalone flashlight could be used for) X2 is nearly useless unfortunately.
== Connection
Despite having BT5.0, X2 bluetooth range is sad compared to Redmi. With Redmi I can go three walls behind and sound is almost perfect. With X2 going behind one wall already causes artifacting. Going behind 3 results in no sound at all. Everything (environment, headphones) was the same, only difference was in phones when testing. So I can't use BT headphones in kitchen unless my X2 is next to me. With Redmi I could leave it in my room and all is fine.
On the other hand X2 cellular network strength is much better than Redmi. 3/4G works flawlessly and provides better speed than on Redmi. Areas where Redmi has no network connection, X2 has at least half bars and stable internet.
Call voice quality is ok. That's all. Not bad, not good. Just okay. On the other hand the included case will hurt your ear if you talk for a long time with your phone pressed against your ear.
== Battery
X2 discharges faster than Redmi but X2 has fast charge so if you have an outlet nearby it's no issue. But having USB C means public charging might or might not work. Especially if there's no fast charge. But going 20% to full in 30 minutes is godsent on X2.
== Software
Default software is junk (compared to gapps at least).
Phone app sucks, it's combined with contacts app and is overall inferior to google phone app I find. Same can be said about SMS app. Sure the google one is barebones, but realme one is just... off. It feels like they wanted to replace gapps for the sake of replacing them, not innovating in any way as everything is either the same or worse.
Despite being a fancy rom, it offers almost no customization options.
Notification pulldown also sucks as it shows the quick toggle buttons first rather than notifications.
== Camera
Hardware wise it is great. Software wise... sucks. 64mp mode only allows 4:3 aspect for some reason. Normal photo mode does not allow 16:9 or such aspects, only 4:3 or "fullscreen", which is too wide to be practical but not wide enough to be wide, that's what wide lens is for. Switching between modes is painful and annoying. On default settings colors are far too washed out and/or too warm. This is not a sensor issue since going into advanced mode and making manual configurations alleviates this issue easily. But not in default photo mode.
In summary, if I had known about all these issues, I would've bought a different phone.
Agree on pretty much everything. Especially because some apps like googles messaging wont work for me, the phone insists on using its built in sms app. If anyone's found a way around that please let me know.
Did you keep the phone? If yes, any chance you'd change your mind on anything now that ColorOS is replaced?

Hi, dude,
This is a normal physical effect, which is called 'Antbamding' (50 or 60Hz).
in previous versions there was an option in camera settings "Antbanding" to minimize that effect.
for more Info 'google' it!
I do not see any option in Gcam for anti-banding
I am also experiencing this, vertical bars for BOTH front and back camera. Was at restaurants in low light environment and took these, using portrait mode, night mode and normal mode.
Yes, this is the same issue I have experienced on both front and back camera in artificial lights.
Seen this during day time, indoor shoot as well as night time indoor shoot
Ok. That's 2 of us... Is this normal/expected camera processor behavior or do we have defective units??
A couple others have reported this as well. Even in few of the youtube videos comparing Pixel 7 with other smartphones, I was able to catch this on pixel 7/pro display.
I do not believe this is affecting just vanilla 7, but 7 pro as well.
I hope others chime in with their experience by shooting under different light conditions.
I had such a problem when I put on a cover. It turns out that there is a sensor between the two cameras, and my cover did not have a hole for this sensor. I had to make a hole myself. Everything is fine now. My pixel 7.

What case/cover it is?
I have the same issue...
Issue is seen even without any case/cover in my case
Workaround - Start the camera in selfie mode and after 1 second switch to back camera.
Update; i exchanged phone as it was new and replacement phone does same thing, so it is a " bad behavior". Work around is to play with the lightness bar when taking pic. Banding stops at a certain point, but what a pain..
This isn't a defect per se, it's image banding.
Likely from LED lighting.
Try decreasing the shutter speed under a 100th of a second while keeping the exposure like in pro mode.

There are no such options in Google Camera app. I see the same response being posted all over the internet for such problems (reported on Pixel 6, Pixel 6 pro etc.)

That's a normal digital camera phenomenon, not a defect. That said I can't get my N10+ to do it with LED lighting. These ones probably aren't pulse modulated though.
Use the phone's led, another led light source or incandescent lighting to back fill the shot. You need to slow the shutter speed otherwise or shoot at a higher ISO.
