I LOVE ARISE/Viper setup - they sound fantastic! The deep buffer has to be removed to get audio streaming apps (Google Play Music, Spotify, Pandora) to process. The issue I've ran into is when you remove the deep buffer, the audio in quite a few games stutters badly. Almost like the phone is running on a low power setting. It's not the cracking/popping that happened with older versions of Viper. Some users have suggested using ICE with Config 2, but that didn't help with my setup.
So that leads me to looking for another audio mod. Any suggestions that will process audio from streaming apps and not require deep buffer removal?
Setup: Nexus 6, tried old and new versions of Viper (back to 2.33 and up to most recent 7/24), different ROMs as well (SIX, Desolation, Dirty Unicorns) and different kernels too (stock, Blackbird, Franco, ElementalX).
I was periodically trying all sound mods but my fav is ARISE. You can try this, this one is good

I'm on NOS 7.1.2 and works like a charm. I like the fact that there is no app to deal with. Just flash in recovery and enjoy. Make a backup first as there is no uninstaller for this. Or reflash your rom to get rid of it.
For me it gives good sound without all the hassle of Viper etc. Dont get me wrong I tried them and are very good but I wanted somthing simplier and to work right out of the box without having to spend to much time on setup. Hope it works for you too.

As the title of the post says, I'm encountering this extremely infuriating audio bug in Oreo based custom ROMs (OOS works fine) where the audio from most games comes out "dragged" and distorted once every few seconds. It's driving me nuts and I can't figure out what on Earth is causing it.
I have V4A installed, but that seemed to work just fine on OOS without any issues whatsoever, so it may not be causing the issue. Can anyone else please tell me whether they're facing a similar issue or not? I'm currently on Resurrection Remix 6.1 2019/07/15. This issue has been driving me insane for the past few months (during which I've only been on RR, but have encountered this issue on other ROMs including LOS).
#1 Update to the post:
Viper seems to be the issue, contrary to my belief. I tried it with Viper uninstalled via a dirty flash of my ROM, and the glitch didn't exist anymore. Just to be sure I got another version of V4A (this time a magisk one) and the bug is back. Is there any way to workaround this thing? I'd really like to keep my Viper
I'm using Dolby Atmos without any issues.
Hello everyone,
Some days ago i got the ATT 5ge update and also the Android Pie upgrade. Two days after i was watching a movie and i noticed the volume got lower. I was on MX player and the setting was at 8 and it remained at 8 but the volume got so low i needed to put it on 12 to continue watching the movie.
I have tried using different players, using youtube and even putting the phone in safe mode. No luck. Ringtones and notifcations seems fine, not sure thou.
I am just asking if Pie has known sound issues so i can rule out speakers hardware problems.
LOL @ "5G update." ATT marketing works, I guess, no matter how dishonest.
No I've not had any issues with sound on my Note 9 or Note 8 running Pie.
I know but there is no other way to call it haha. Maybe the new fake 5g update. anyway anyone is having issues or have read about it? I read at launch some devices had problems before a patch.
I found the culprit. I noticed several settings were change after the pie update and found out dolby atmos was disabled, all is back to normal.

Glad you got it worked out. FYI, in the future, you can just refer to it as the Pie update. Or even the One UI update. You don't have to specify the 5G update. We will just laugh at you. LOL.

There is a bug in android pie - if you turn off dolby for gaming and run some game, after you quit the dolby atmos will be turned off (every time you play any game... cool). Was reported to samsung during the beta countless times and they didn't fix something as simple as that.
Hi,
I just took my old Nexus six out of the drawer thinking I would start using it again but sadly the dreaded speaker death has occurred. Is there a series of steps I should take to try to fix it? Earphones work fine and Bluetooth works fine but nothing comes out of the top speaker at all even with the volume set to high. I'm on android version 7.11, pure Nexus v. 7.1.1.20170215-OFFICIAL, rooted, with the kernel Franco 3.10.40.
What should I try first, hardware fixes or software? It used to work, now is dead.
Roll back to stock first to verify whether this is a hardware or software issue. If it's software, install a ROM more current than Pure Nexus. Otherwise you'll have to hunt for a new speaker.
I will install stock first. Where would I find a new speaker if that's what it needs?
Update: rolled back to stock and sound works fine now. You are brilliant! Now have to decide what ROM to use. Any recommendations?
You first have to decide if you want VoLTE or wifi-calling. For that you need a Oreo rom, and the only one I know that is still updated is LineageOS 15.1.
Otherwise, you can take your pick from the Pie roms. I believe that they all work fine on the N6, it's more a question of which extra features you prefer.

Is there any great advantage to upgrading from stock? Now that I've got the phone working pretty well I'm a little hesitant to start messing around with lineage or one of the pie ROMs. Will the phone run faster and have less lag and have better camera options if I upgrade the ROM?
Thanks again for helping me get my phone working again.

The new roms have many more features, both from the newer Android, and from the efforts of the rom devs.
Of course, you may not need or even like the new features. Myself, I hate the new auto-brightness in Pie.
There are also some speed optimizations, but IMO they don't make a world of difference.
I believe that the camera driver is closed source, and therefore unchanged from stock. The camera app can however provide different amounts of options on top of the driver (Snap Camera in lineage has a lot of options) - but you should be able to get that by installing other camera apps on stock as well.
But most of all, I like to have the newest security fixes.
The bootloader has an option called: "factory mode" that has an app called: "CQATest"
After loading it choose "CQA Menu Mode"
Audio --> Loudspeaker
This will play an audio test file at full volume until you press the vol down or back button.
This is a useful application for general hardware testing too.
Has anyone managed to get Viper4Android working on the latest beta of Android 12?
The usual methods don't work (makes sense, since its a new OS).
Just curious. I like Android 12 so far, but might roll back to 11 if I can't get Viper going.
Default audio is terrible!
I'm looking for the same!

Hopefully we'll find a solution soon!
I bought Wavelet today (original dev of V4A), but it doesn't quite work or feel the same as Viper, there is honestly no replacing it, it's invaluable, at least for those of us who love good audio quality.

Hey man I got it working. Got an apk that works on android 12.. Just install, grand root permissions, install drivers n reboot! Do disable battery optimization! Hope it works. Tested on poco f1 android 12 beta 3.
Nice! Thanks for letting me know, I'm excited now! I'll try reflashing A12 later today and try that!

Thanks this works for me Pixel 5
Unfortunately for me that apk didn't work. Audio will not process no matter what I do.
There has always been something about V4A version 2.7.2.1 that has never worked, even on my old Pixel 2 XL, my Pixel 5 doesn't work with it either. Legacy mode, compatibility mode, etc etc never make it work, or process audio. Not sure why. This is after multiple factory image reflashes, including wipes or data formatting.
I'm not sure if anyone has been able to get the Ichigo Kyrwrosaki 2.7.1.6 working on their Pixel 5's with A12 yet. It works flawlessly on Android 10 and 11 for me. Was hoping it would've worked with A12.
Thanks for any info provided and all the help given so far!

Sometimes same issue happens with me. I follow these steps:
1. Play song.
2. V4a doesn't work.
3. I force close v4a.
4. I open v4a.
5. I pause and resume song from notification bar.
Try the above steps, may help..
To avoid this I disabled battery optimization and have enabled legacy mode.
Working good for me i installed the driver let it reboot then i went into the settings in viper app and toggled the legacy mode i also have the kernel set to permissive
Not sure what happened but v2721 works well for me on Android 12 Beta 3 and Beta 3.1 update now. Occasionally I might have to toggle legacy mode on/off but it works.
Side note, to me v2716 of Viper sounds better audio quality wise. Almost like there's a lot of gain or distortion/clipping out peaking happening, regardless of output adjustments. Overall still sounds great, just something I noticed.
Hopefully all of the methods everyone has posted will work on the final version of Android 12!

I really recommend to always refer to the source where you had obtained that. It could be a dangerous app, you know. Also, avoid permissive at all cost, it's VERY dangerous. Is it enforces or permissive thing ?!

Yeah, I have it installed I will share but just as I share it with you, you must create a thread so that other people can also install it. If you agree I will upload the files

Only works in permissive with legacy off here on A12 on Pixel 4XL....
Tested by setenforce 0
Force closing the Viper app
Reopening app
Status ok, but not processing
Toggled Legacy Mode off
Status ok, and processing
Im used to my modded Ichigo Kyrwrosaki 2.7.1.6 on A11 just working
Its modded to start permissive, but switch to enforcing after 30 seconds, doesnt work on 12...status is normal but it wont process audio at all
As always it will take a little time to figure out the magical mix of things to get it working
Updated to newest Magisk and everything is broken again.
Guessing this is what you were referring to @73sydney.
Hoping to figure something out.
My driver status stays abnormal no matter what now.
Pixel 6, android 12 here. I downloaded the apk and selinux enabler and installed both. It works for like a minute, then viper stops processing, and doesnt work unless you reboot, and only works for about a minute again. Something is killing it.

I am NOT using A12, but one thing I have used in the past to stop Ansroid from killing apps in the background is by sett9ing the OOM to superman. And the Nice to high, just for good measure. It would be possibly telling to know exactly which process is dying.

Sooo... I reinstalled viper and the selinux switch. I then turned off battery optimization for both apps. Here's where it gets weird.. I have apple music playing, viper is running, tapping the status button shows that it is processing, but as Im making live changes, you cant hear any kind of change whatsoever. If I enable legacy mode, it stops processing, disable, goes back to shows processing, but its not actually working.
Im not a developer, so I can only tell you what I did at the apps level, hopefully that helps the devs out there. I flipped the switch for compatibility mode and restart the phone. Started apple music, status button is greyed out, and its not processing, cannot hear any live sound changes. So I uncheck compatibility mode, and reboot again. Start apple music, open viper, compatibility and legacy are both OFF, and this time, its NOT processing as shown when pressing the status button. I then enable legacy mode, and now it shows processing, and making the settings changes actually works.
I have my pixel A buds in for the past 10min now, and viper has not stopped processing. My only issue is that it seems like the settings dont make as big of a difference as Im used to them making a difference, if that makes sense. At lunch, Ill test in the car with the LDAC BT adapter and see how it sounds.
Hopefully that helps everyone! Really appreciate all the input.
mmarcz
UPDATE: Would not work with the LDAC adapter, but worked fine with stock dash BT, arrgg...
