HI everyone i recently changed to linux mint and got an old phone (SGS4) and am wanting to update it to a new custom rom but don't know where to start i've had no problem with rooting and customizing phones with the adb binaries on windows but not a clue when it comes to linux. If anyone could pass me in the right direction or better yet some direct help it would be appreciated. For the record i've used the almighty searchbar and google. Just a quick question. I've been looking around the internet for this. I just recently recieved a Huawei Acend W1 from Wind Mobile (canada) and the phone is a U-34, and not the usual u00.
The latest I can normally update my phone is 8.0.10211.204, and I was wondering whether there was anyway to update this to it's latest and third update. Is this just a problem for Canada and huawei not supporting the updates? My only problem is that I'm not sure if I'll EVER get the update here, as tbh I don't mind waiting.
Thanks for all and any help,
Edit: I just found this post : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51656759&postcount=28 and I'm thinking of trying it. Does anyone know if anyone has tried it?

you can try upgrade via Preview for Developers (preview for developers now upgrade to 8.1)
go to http://apps.windowsstore.com/default.htm and sign in with your Live (Microsoft) account which you use on phone. check mailbox on phone and install cert from mail you received from AppStudio
go to Store and install http://windowsphone.com/s?appId=178ac8a1-6519-4a0b-960c-038393741e96. Run after install and activate it.... go to settings - check for update
The problem with that is that my phone is currently at the First update, so even though I have the developer preview downloaded, I can't open it as I need my phone to be at the latest OS.
All I am trying to do or want to do at this point is get my phone from G1 to G2.
I tried both of the guides above, and one gave me a handshake error, and the other a cookie error. Does anyone have any advice, maybe something I'm missing, that might help?
Thanks,
Using that same guide you used (http://forums.wpcentral.com/huawei-ascend-w1/229445-those-who-get-their-w1-market-locked-china.html), try flashing this rom: http://www.mediafire.com/download/l...030.5614.46900.20900_USA-Channel.05011TTC.zip. Supposedly it's a GDR2 ROM but I'm unable to test it because I don't have a u34 version of the phone. One thing to note is when following the guide, run all the qpst applications in administrator mode. You need to be running Windows Vista or above. Also, running it on a virtual machine will not work.
Thanks for the reply, I'll try this when I get home tonight. I've heard that a 32 bit windows 7 is the best OS to try it on. I have a W8 64 bit, do you know if that really makes a difference?

For me it does not work on windows 8.1 64bit, on the other hand it works perfect on windows 7 32 bit. But Microsoft has pulled out the latest update on the W1. They are working on it but so far I am still waiting for the update on the W1. You can follow the status of the updates on the following link : http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...d-b6a2-fa6df0ba7c58?page=118&tm=1399777042881
There was a chinese forum that used a trick to get update by tricking the w1 by changing it in registry to a nokia device but I can't find the link anymore.
Tbh I'm perfectly fine waiting a couple weeks, but to get to that point I need to get to GSR2, as I'm still stuck with 1 atm. Didn't get a chance to try it last night, but I should be able to find a w7 32 bit pc to test it on.
Thanks for the reply and link to that thread.
Hey everyone, I'm new to these forums but was recommended by a friend. He said that if anyone knew how to do what I need to do, this would be the place so I appreciate any help given.
I am looking to wipe out my Nokia Lumia Icon which has the Windows Phone 8.1 Dev kit on it and put on Android. I tried Windows Phone out but there is still a few kinks that need to be worked out before I fully commit. I would normally just go get an Android Phone but finances don't currently permit and the hardware on this phone is nice.
Thanks

Hi,
If I understand correctly, you want to install Android on this phone? If this is so, then you can not.
By cons, I do not quite understand "Windows Phone 8.1 Dev kit" You mean the Preview for Developers?

Yes, I was looking to wipe off Windows Phone 8.1 and install android. Any reason behind why you can't do it? Just software/hardware compatibility or what?
I did mean the preview for developers.
Thanks!
... you're awfully new to this smartphone thing, aren't you? With *very* few counterexamples, what you're asking for is almost never possible. Without going into the technical details:
1) Most smartphones have locked bootloaders. WP8 devices won't load any OS without a MS signature; good luck getting one of those for your Android image.
2) There's no "installer" for Android (or for WP) the way there is for Windows 7 or Ubuntu or something. You have to customize an Android image with device-specific firmware, then flash the whole thing. There currently doesn't exist any Android-compatible firmware for the Icon.
3) Most important of all: SEARCH BEFORE POSTING! It is literally the number one rule on this forum. Lots of noobs have asked this question; it's annoying answering them over and over again.
If you want to install Android on Lumia Icon, why don't you just buy an Android phone ?
Hello people,
I need to purchase a phone with Windows 8.1 OS, that can be rooted.
I am a little bit confused by all these terminology (flashing, rooting, unlocking, etc...) so let me explain what I mean by rooting:
I need full filesystem access, and the abbility to run commands on the phone, install additional software.
The phone is strictly for debugging a certain application, It doesn't matter how the phone looks and such, the only thing matters it need to have Windows 8.1 and I have to be able to root it.
An SD card slot would be nice too.
Can you please recommend me such device(s) that is 100% rootable?
Thread closed at OP's request.
Hello people,
I would like to ask for some suggestions before buying my first Windows Phone. (preferably a Lumia)

No Windows Phone can be 100% rooted.
You can use Developer tools to debugging

Root is a concept derived from Linux. So little Windows Phone users talk about this. For your purpose, the Widows Developer tools should do the trick.
As per my suggestion.
There is Huawei WP8.0 Device. That you can even unlocked Bootloader or can flash custom ROM. (You can update it to the 8.1 or v10)
Other Samsung/Lumia Device (Having SD-Card Support) can be Interop/Capability unlocked to test high-privileges application. (Pure App Developer Mode)
Any WP 8.0 Supports WP 8.1/WP10*

I suggest you a lumia 830, best balance performance and possiblity to hack slot sd card, it's a new series lumia x30 and you can interop ulock it with rom rebuilder or vcreg mods!!
At present, there are no publicly available hacks that I know of for "100% root" on a WP8.x device. Capability unlock - which only requires registry editing - is the closest you can get right now, I think. Interop/capability unlocks typically also mean full file system access - either on-device, via USB, or both - though you may still run into restrictions (for example, you can't edit or delete a file that the OS has a non-shared HANDLE open on).
Samsung phones probably have the most interop/capability-unlock software released for them, but the other options that @djamol suggested above would work too.
theres the developer unlock which gives you more but not 100% root.
as far as is know there is no complete unlock yet for all WP after WP7.
Thank you all, greatly appreciate your input!
I went with Samsung ATIV S !
Hi everyone!!
I hope you all guys are ok. I bought this nice htc phone few days ago and, bealiving that i had everything done just waiting for unlock my bootloader, i can not pass form the step: "waiting device". I have tried many ways to do it but unsuccessfully. So, i had seen the thread by our brother bassboykevlar but i can not figure out clearly what is he saying (the steps): here is the link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2246739. So guys, can anyone of you help me to got this rid off and continue to do my rooting.
Thanks in advance!!
By the way: i have everything in stock, Win10 Pro x64. All three files are in the android folder, SDK is installed (x64 version), Google USB driver installed, Java for windows installed, and HTC Sync installed but not running.
