Stock firmware clean flash - ASUS ROG Phone 3 Questions & Answers

Hi. I have recently bought a ROG 3 Tencent version from AliExpress (865+, 12 GB ram, 128 gb storage). The phone came with the pre-installed WW version. I presume it was converted from the CN version by the seller. He did a really good job since there are no problems whatsoever, no "incompatible firmware" error, refresh rates working fine. However I'm a bit paranoid about buying electronics from CN, so i wanted to perform a totally clean firmware flash.
My knowledge of Android is limited so I'm asking for help. To my understanding what i should do is:
- install adb and drivers, fastboot binaries or tool all in one (does it download all the necessary files and drivers automatically?)
- unlock bootloader with asus tool or command line in adb, (is it necessary to format internal storage?)
- put the phone into recovery mode by turning it off and then pressing volume+ and power and connect it to pc
- run the command prompt from the adb folder
- type "adb reboot bootloader" to get into fastboot mode
And that's where im getting confused.
What i want to do is fully format internal storage (don't know the fastboot command for that) and perform a clean flash of the newest stock firmware (it comes in a zip file on the official ROG3 support page). From my understanding, since ROG3 doesn't support sd card i need to put the firmware file in the adb folder and run "adb sideload firmware file name.zip" than "adb reboot bootloader" again and sideload the same file again to flash it to the second partition. Do I need to wipe cache after that? If so what is the command for that? Than i would like to relock the bootloader (fastboot oem asus-lock). I'm sure I'm wrong at some point and probably missing some steps so please guide me through the process.

Also, can someone explain to me what is the difference between RAW, UL, and "normal" WW firmware available at Asus support page? As I can recall UL firmware and Asus unlock tool were also available for download at Asus support page but now they are gone.

[Q] Huawei p7 Bootloop

A couple of days ago my Huawei p7 started to shut itself down and after that it keeps rebooting.
It starts itself up and I get into the choose your language screen and then it shuts down.
When i try to get into the system recovery (using volume & power) I get the following screen:
Android system recovery <3e>
Huawei software installed failed.
Please retry!
Shutdown system now
There is no UPDATE.APP
.............................................
FAIL
And even in system recovery it keeps rebooting.
Im kinda helpless at the moment not knowing what to do.
Did this occur to anyone ? Is there a solution for this problem ?

You should download firmware update file from Huawei Official web site. Extract dload folder from downloaded archive and put it on your SD card. After that you should try to trigger firmware update with factory reset (method which is usually called "force update") by holding all three buttons when the phone is turned off.
But maybe your phone have some hardware problem if it restarts even in recovery mode.
UPDATE:
Does phone restarts itself when it's in fastboot mode (you can get into that mode by holding VOLUME DOWN and POWER button while phone is turned off and connected into USB port of computer just before pressing that button combination) ??

I've downloaded the update file and proceeded with your steps. I continued to trigger the firmware update with the factory reset.
At first it seemed to work, the phone started updating but after a couple of seconds it started to reboot itself again
I got the phone in fastboot mode and at this moment it does not restart itself !
I went on downloading Hisuite and at this moment it keeps searching for drivers on the network.
The searching for drivers is taking quite some time is this normal ?

OK, maybe these are good news if you say that your phone doesn't restart when it's in fastboot mode.
I would recommend you to try to reflash your phone's stock recovery and boot images with those extracted from firmware that you are trying to install.
Follow these steps:
Download Huawei Extractor tool from here,
Open update.app with Huawei Extractor and extract next two images: RECOVERY and BOOT (you can do that by selecting those two images while holding CTRL button, then right click > Extract Selected),
When extracted, rename those two images into "recovery.img" and "boot.img",
Copy those two images into "platform-tools" folder of Android SDK,
Run command prompt and go to "platform-tools" folder by using "cd" command,
Start your phone into fastboot mode,
Enter following command into command prompt: "fastboot devices" (without quotes), you should get your phone's serial number listed, if that's right, go to the next step,
Enter: "fastboot oem get-bootinfo", it needs to say that your bootloader is unlocked. If it's not you need to enter the next command "fastboot oem unlock 1234567812345678", where "1234567812345678" should be replaced with unlock code that is unique for your device. Instructions which explain how to obtain unlock code for your device can be found here,
Flash your phone's recovery with "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img",
Flash your phone's boot image with: "fastboot flash boot boot.img",
After successful flashing of both images, turn your phone off by holding POWER button for a several seconds,
Prepare SD card on your PC by formatting SD card and copying "dload" folder of phone's firmware onto SD card,
After you insert SD card into phone, start your phone with "forced install" method by holding all three buttons on your phone.
After that your phone should process firmware install successfully if there is no some hardware issues. Good luck and inform us about your progress.

Hi,
I've got the same issue.
When I start to "force install" method, my phone doesn't boot.
It just stay in a state of "charging" but nothing append.
I flashed boot and recovery with Fastboot.
But now, when I start the phone in Fastboot&Rescue Mode, the device doesn't appear in the liste when I run adb devices.
But when I start in the "force install" mode, adb devices returns the serial of the phone (but it doesn't respond to fastboot command).
Are there other files to flash on the phone than juste recovery and boot ?

Ok phone is back !
The problem came from my SD Card, I had not only the dload folder, but an other file.
Format SD Card -> dload folder -> "force install" method -> ENJOY !

I followed all your steps but i get stuck at step 7. When I give the command fastboot devices it doesn't show my phone's serial number. Instead it shows a ? (question mark).
Did I do something wrong or is there a solution for this?

Maybe you should try other version of platform tools. I would recommend you to download adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20140702.zip (x64) or adt-bundle-windows-x86-20140702.zip (x32) from "Android SDK" official web pages (I assume that your are using Windows OS). After download extract only "platform-tools" directory to the root of Windows C:\ partition and try described procedure again.
However if you are still getting question marks instead of phone's serial number, you should ignore that step and go onto the next one. I had the same problem in the past and flash commands were successful even serial number wasn't been displayed.

So I followed through like you said. Gave the fastboot oem get-bootinfo command and then I got (bootloader) locked. So I followed the bootloader's unlock code (official way), entered my product SN and product IMEI, used the Huawei Product ID generator followed the procedure and all I get is : Please input the correct Product ID
What did I do wrong this time ? I'm not sure if it's even possible to do this wrong. Is there another way around ?
You can unlock with Vroot, like I did. I didn't try to get a serial from Huawei.
For the Fastboot command 'Fastboot device's I had a ? too, but with 'adb devices' command, I got my serial number.

I've downloaded Vroot (english version) but when i connect my phone it says not support mode
I tried to connect while in fastboot&rescue mode, because this is the only way the phone stays on without restarting.
I then tried to connect without fastboot&rescue mode. But my phone keeps rebooting. I did get a message that USB debugging is disabled. However I can't enable usb debugging because my phone won't boot up normally.

After unlocking my phone I got the message unlocked in CMD.
I then flashed recovery and boot. Both times it said that the flash was succesfull, this only took a few seconds I don't know if thats normal? I then followed your last steps ( dload folder etc) and put the SD card in my phone.
It start installing but after approximetaly 25 seconds the phone shuts itself down and then reboots.
The procedure then starts again and it starts installing followed by shutting down and rebooting.
I'm sorry to hear that. Seems like it's some hardware issue.
However I still have one more idea that you can try in fastboot mode. I would recommend you to install entire firmware manually with fastboot commands.
By following previously described procedure try to extract with "Huawei Extractor" tool next images also: SYSTEM, USERDATA, CUST and CACHE.
After step number 10, try to use next commands also:
"fastboot flash system system.img"
"fastboot flash cust cust.img"
"fastboot flash userdata userdata.img"
"fastboot flash cache cache.img"
When you are finished with flashing of all images, use "fastboot reboot" command to restart your phone. Steps 11, 12 and 13 should be ignored this time.

Hey, I'm glad I found this forum, because I have exactly the same problem! Since zbnd did not reply I wanted to let you know that flashing boot.img, recovery.img, cache.img, userdata.img, cust.img and system.img via fastboot did not work
The commandline for each file said "OKAY" and "finished" therefore I assume the process(es) completed succesfully.
Maybe I should tell you some information and the steps I did with my P7:
- my device is a branded german telekom version with firmware P7-L10-V100R001C150B122​- because of crappy pink telekom bootlogo und bloatware I wanted to flash the original huawei firmware so I downloaded the B126 from the official website and updated via force update method​- at the end of the update process i got the messages "huawei cust fail" and "update_post_process fail" but when I rebootet the B126 was installed and showed a message "Defect report reminders - This is an internal test version. Please report defects to Yangyexiao 00143718" - can't be correct, I thought​- after googling a lot and reading through several forums I rooted my device with RootGenius, installed HiSuite and Android-SDK (driver were installed correctly, adb devices showed a device with serial) and deleted the "cust" directory on my phone - at that point everything still worked​- next step: I installed TWRP 2.7.1.0, made an updateable zip file with huawei update extractor (including system.img, userdata.img, cust.img and boot.img) and flashed it via TWRP. The process completed succesfully, but needed only a few seconds. After that I got this bootloop at the language selection​- then I wanted to return to the last functioning state, so I flashed the stock recovery via fastboot and started with force update method. But after a few seconds the device rebooted during the update process which led to another (maybe the same) bootloop. I had to remove the sd card, but the device continued to reboot in recovery mode. So i installed TWRP 2.7.1.0 again​- Then I tried to restore a B133 backup I got from another forum, but it obviously did not work (see attached image)​
Now I just don't know what to do ... I get a bootloop in stock recovery and I get a bootloop in TWRP 2.8.0.0.
Only TWRP 2.7.1.0 does not reboot. What is about the other files inside the UPDATE.APP (modemimage.img, efi.img, etc)? Is it possible that some of these files are needed?

If this recovery works than try:
1. Save this Se7en or this HRT or this custom MIUI ROM on SD card
2 .Wipe in TWRP everything (dalvik, system,data,cust, internal) except external (SD card). Internal only if You have a backup or not important data there.
4. Install zipp ROM from external memory. Sometimes try more than one time in fail case. For HRT ROM especially.

I tried se7en and miui.
I wiped dalvik,system,data,internal,cache and custom, which only lasted about 2 seconds, but said succesful (Is that enough to delete all partitions?).
Installation of both custom roms completed succesfully and lastet several seconds (max 1 min I think).
Se7en: reboot -> huawei logo -> reboot -> language selection (in the style of stock rom?) -> reboot ...
Miui: reboot -> miui logo -> reboot -> language selection (miui style) -> reboot -> wifi selection (I skipped) -> searching for sim card -> reboot

To use fastboot you need to unlock bootloader first. And before flash, you need to erase partition first, for a proper job. Please read well about the fastboot procedure is a dangerous procedure
My bootloader is unlocked, but fastboot sais I don't have permission to erase partitions ...

Soft bricked phone? Can't install recovery and can't install a rom

Okay so I got my oneplus 3t today and I updated it to Nougat via the ota file all good so far. I then decided that I wanted to install a custom rom so I downloaded twrp supersu etc everything needed to root and install the rom. Here's where it went wrong in knowingly I downloaded the wrong twrp flashed it and it would just hang at the flash screen for twrp. Anyway after hours of trying to install a recovery I managed to get a stock one to semi work, now it turns out I don't know how I did it but my phone won't even boot it just turns on and goes straight to fastboot mode. I managed to get a stock recovery semi working but it won't let me install the stock rom from internal storage and I've tried updating through adb and it will hang at a random percentage for a good 20 mins and then just fail. Really need some help here it would be great, thanks

If you can get into fastboot mode then the best recourse is through there. Hope you properly OEM unlocked your device.
First of all, you MUST have the latest adb/fastboot binaries and FOR SURE have the correct drivers.
Follow the links on this XDA article to download the latest adb and fastboot binaries: https://www.xda-developers.com/google-releases-separate-adb-and-fastboot-binary-downloads
This is the link for the Windows binary: https://dl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools-latest-windows.zip
Extract all the contents of the zip file in a folder on your PC.
Then, also make sure to have THE CORRECT twrp, 3.0.2.0 or 3.0.3.0. This is the link but currently it is down: https://twrp.me/devices/oneplus3t.html
Download THE IMAGE, NOT FLASHABLE ZIP and put it in the same folder as the android platform tools above.
Finally, download the latest complete 3T firmware from OnePlus from this link: http://downloads.oneplus.net/devices/oneplus-3t/
I STRONGLY recommend not to use an update zip, even a full ROM update zip as that one might not include certain firmware images.
Put THE ZIP on the same folder as the others, DO NOT EXTRACT ANYTHING.
On your PC, open a command prompt in the folder where you extracted the android platform tools and run the following: fastboot boot twrp-3.0.3-0-oneplus3t.img (assuming you downloaded the 3.0.3 version of twrp).
Your phone will TEMPORARILY accept the twrp recovery as a boot image and boot from there. NOTHING IS BEING PERMANENTLY WRITTEN AT THIS TIME.
After that, enter TWRP's Wipe menu and wipe system, data and cache.
Finally, use TWRP's Advanced menu and enter adb sideload mode. Once there slide that slider to the right to enable adb mode and return to your PC and enter the following command in the command prompt:
adb sideload OnePlus3TOxygen_28_OTA_029_all_1612131737_17e7161d2b234949.zip (assuming you downloaded the 3.5.4 binary from OnePlus).
TWRP should properly flash the OnePlus ROM and hopefully, return you to proper function. You can then update back to Nougat.

My instructions while detailed are not step-by-step. I expect the person reading them to have their PC configured correctly and at least a vague idea of what they're doing.
So, assuming you put the correct TWRP image (my command uses the name of the image for TWRP 3.0.3.0, you MUST alter it to reflect the actual image's filename if it's not that) on the same folder as the fastboot binary then yeah, the command
fastboot boot twrp-3.0.3-0-oneplus3t.img
should have made your phone reboot and enter into the TWRP image that you had on your PC.
If it didn't then you did sth else wrong before that.
Either you didn't OEM unlock your phone when you still could or you didn't use the android platform tools that I linked or you don't have the correct ADB drivers installed on your PC.
Start from there.

Thanks for your help @KeyperOS - I know where I went wrong...
To save some time, when I tried to reboot into TWRP, I typed "fastboot boot " then I dragged and dropped the TWRP img file onto that line in the cmd window (rather than typing the filename manually) - when you do that, it appears to include the full path to the img - it was that that was causing the problem.
When I typed the TWRP filename manually, it worked.
The only thing that caught me out was after I'd installed the ROM (via adb sideload) I tried to reboot the device from TWRP recovery - this seemed to just hang. In the end I just powered off the phone using the power key, then powered it back up as per usual.
Checked that the phone booted to the first of the setup screens, then powered off/booted into fastboot mode, relocked the bootloader and it seems to be OK.
I'm now back on 3.5.4 again, which was what I was trying to do...
4.0.0/1 had felt a bit laggy, and I'd sensed some issues with wifi and BT, I can now run 3.5.4 and see how it compares - was I just imagining it?

Windows' command prompt has an autocomplete feature. If you want it to add the name of a file, type a couple letters and then present TAB, it's gonna complete the filename itself and if it's the wrong file you can keep tapping tab to cycle through all the options.

In my experience, 3.5.4 was great but 4.0 is a step up in both battery life, which IME is amazing and features, with it I almost didn't need root and certainly don't need xposed which was a first.

Flashing Factory Image
The following instructions worked for me when trying to reflash the factory firmware for the ATT Asus MemoPad 7 LTE (ME375CL). I did originally try using the Asus Flash Tool and the raw firmware file (link below) but the tool said it could not unzip the package for some reason or another. So the steps below show how I did it using ADB with fastboot.
I ASSUME NO LIABILITY SHOULD THIS GO WRONG FOR YOU! However, it probably shouldn't matter if you are bricked, I doubt it will make it any worse Either way, I will not replace your tablet or be responsible for troubleshooting it should you mess it up more...
This scenario is based on the tablet stuck on the Asus boot screen and not going any further. I was trying some in depth rooting attempts and bricked it badly. I was then trying to install a custom recovery and that is why I could not reset it and bricked it.
PRE-REQS:
1. ADB installed - Download: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B0fKccJIuWsna04wMjY1eG9YREU
2. Asus Drivers installed
3. Firmware - Download: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B0fKccJIuWsnWGhwYzA0Vkluc2s (file is 1 Gb + in size, may take a bit)
SETUP:
If you already have a working ADB setup, do not download the one above. If you are using the one above, I extracted the folder into my C: drive, so the path for ADB would be C:\adb (to keep it simple and less typing).
MAKE SURE THE ASUS DRIVERS ARE INSTALLED! If you have plugged the tablet in to a pc before, they should already be there. Otherwise search, download and install the appropriate drivers.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Extract the firmware zip file to somewhere easily accessible like your desktop. In there, you should see the boot.img, recovery.img and system.img files, copy/paste those files to your ADB folder (for easier typing later on). There are also additional files like these but start with "unsigned_", do NOT use those!
1. Ensure you probably have at least 30% battery charge, I would still recommend more though.
2. Put the tablet in Fastboot mode by ensuring the tablet is completely powered down and then press/hold the VOLUME UP and POWER keys at the same time. When the Asus screen appears, let go of the POWER button but continue to hold the VOLUME UP button. Let go of the VOLUME UP button when the fastboot screen appears.
3. Plug the tablet in to the computer and then open a CMD prompt as administrator.
4. The following uses the ADB downloaded and placed in the folder as listed above, you may need to adjust the location path as needed if you already have ADB installed or located in a different path.
Type in the following without the quotes: "cd c:\adb" (this will change the path to the ADB files for the CMD prompt)
Type in the following without the quotes: "fastboot devices" (you should then see a device listed)
Type in the following without the quotes: "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" (flashes the factory recovery image)
Type in the following without the quotes: "fastboot flash system system.img" (flashes the factory system image, may take a while to flash)
Type in the following without the quotes: "fastboot flash boot boot.img" (flashes the factory boot image)
5. Once those 3 images have been flashed, you should have seen a message that says "OKAY" after each one. You should be fine as long as you do not have any red error messages on your tablet.
Type in the following without the quotes: "fastboot reboot" (reboots device normally)
6. If all goes well, it should now boot to the Asus screen and then go to the ATT screen. If so, it will stay on the ATT screen for a while, just wait it out. Mine took about 12-15 minutes and then it opened to the new setup screen to set the tablet up as if its new!
This is how I was able to recover my bricked tablet, hopefully it can help someone else that may run into this.

When I try to flash the recovery partition, I get the following error:

I haven't tried the other commands for system.img or boot.img as I don't want to do anything out of order from the write-up. Ever run into this?
The firmware in the download is 5.1.1, not 4.4.4. That is probably the issue. If you are running good on that, I would try rooting it instead. If you are just wanting to upgrade, you will need to have an active AT&T SIM in the tablet to upgrade over the air. I am not sure if there is a flashable upgrade or not somewhere.
Oh ok John. I misread the title of the thread. I thought it was for updating from 4 to 5.
Quick question then: Is it possible, using the adb / fastboot tools, to backup the current 4.4.4.4 before I allow the tablet to update to Lollipop? After reading around, I understand that Lollipop can't be rooted but I have no real concern for it. But just in case I need the tablet to do something else in the future, I'd like to be able to return it to kit kat to be able to root.
Once you upgrade to lollipop, there is no downgrading for this tablet. There really is not much development for this device. I have kind of been working on a lollipop root when I can. Between my limited time and knowledge of android, I can't promise anything.

I followed the steps above, which you wrote so clearly for lay men, thank you a lot.
The flash for recovery.img and system.img worked fine (no red error messages on device).
The flash for boot.img had a red error message.
Might you have an idea or workaround on how I can address this?
If it refuses, is it possible to factory reset?

Sounds odd that it did 2 out of 3 flashes. After you flashed those and rebooted, are you still on KitKat or did it actually update to Lollipop (5.1)? I ask because I assume the system image that flashed would be the operating system.
I still want to stress that this post is for recovering a bricked tablet that will not boot at all. I would not suggest using this as a flashing upgrade as I do not know if it will truly work. If you are still on KK (even after flashing) you could try installing the Asus Flash Tool and use the raw firmware that you downloaded and try it that way. It did not work for me so that is why I used fastboot. It might work for you.

As a follow up on your question above, Tab restart stalled at a screen (after the Asus logo), presenting some options to do recovery, reboot, factory reset, etc. (factory reset did not help), and red error messages at bottom.
To the GOOD news for anyone interested. I used the Asus Flash Tool and the firmware zip for 5.1.1 (many thanks for the advice).
Note: Tool did not install correctly on Win10 pc, citing error in installing some devcon.exe or similar file (guess that may be a firewall/antivirus issue).
Flash tool took some 15 or so mins unzipping firmware, after which I saw some action on the tab. Another 15 mins, and it rebooted to the At&t logo, stayed here for another 15 mins and unraveled a whole new device on Android 5.1
Glad to hear it worked for you and that I guess you can use this to flash upgrade from kitkat!

1. Download the file above.
2. Extract the zip contents.
3. Plug your ME375CL tablet in to pc via usb cable.
4. Make sure you have enabled Developer Mode and allowed USB Debugging first!
5. Open the folder you extracted and double click the "Root-One-Click.cmd" file.
6. It should reboot to fastboot mode and flash the needed files and then reboot again.
You should now have root access. Verify this by installing a root checker app from the play store. Keep in mind, it may say root not installed on the first run. Sometimes it will take a moment for superuser to initially run or prompt for access.
Side note: the root uninstall did not seem to work, got an error...but oh well, the point is to have root!

Anyone get xposed on LP?
ATT Boot Up Sound
Tired of the ATT boot sound? If you used the rooting method above, then you can get rid of the annoying ATT startup sound by doing the following:
1. Install a Root Browser app (I recommend Rom Toolbox Pro, it has a built in file manager)
2. Navigate to the following path:
root/system/media
3. Find the file named "powerup.wav"
4. Simply rename the file by adding .bak to the end (ex - powerup.wav.bak)
5. Make sure it took the name change (some file managers have issues with that)
6. Reboot and see if it got rid of the sound!
You can also use your own startup sounds as long as they are in a .wav format, I believe. Make sure that the name of the file is powerup.wav.
You can also change your boot animation with "boot animation" app.
Best tweak IMO is adding "ro.config.low_ram=true" to build prop, or installing the low ram device xposed module if we can get it to work (both do the same thing). You gain about 100mb more free RAM on average.

AT&T removed the last update for this tablet months ago and no longer supports it. ASUS states AT&T has all the updates. Total cluster.

[GUIDE][Z2 FORCE XT1789-05] Bootloader/TWRP/Custom ROMs/Root/Dirty flashing/Unbrick

First, thanks to @Uzephi and @41rw4lk for helping me to use/recover my phone. Please, read and do not underestimate the guides: our phone is tricky! We have two system partitions (slot a and b) to allow stock updates on-the-fly. This complicates the normal flashing process and if you do not follow the steps, you may bootloop. Use these guides at your own risk!
Reading this page is a good beginning to understanding the A/B partitioning scheme and how Motorola Z2 Force works:
1) Our phone has A/B partitioning, so flashing Magisk/XPosed is different
2) It does not support Project Treble (faster stock updates)
3) It does not a recovery partition, so flashing TWRP is different
Note also that the RSD Lite from Motorola has issues with Windows 10 and you’ll need to manual flash firmware if you bootloop (see Process E below). Other way is directly flashing from Qualcomm EDL mode (Emergency Download Mode) from which users can perform various tasks like unbricking, unlock bootloader, and installation of any custom ROMs.
Right now, this guide has 5 parts (maybe we can dual boot our phone in the future). If you just want to use a rooted stock ROM, please, search for other guides here on xda. These guides were written (and tested) using a Motorola Z2 Force XT1789-05 phone (Brazil), although most of it should work for other variants if you download and use proper firmware files for these other phones. For other models, better if you follow Uzephi’s guide.
A. Opening bootloader
B. Preparing the phone to move into custom ROMs (AOSP) + TWRP recovery
C. Flashing a custom AOSP ROM + rooting
D. Dirty flashing AOSP ROM updates
E. Recovering from bricks or returning to stock

If you want to move your Motorola Z2 Force to Project Treble ROMs, please, check this guide.
Here is a list of the ROMs that are waiting for you.
A. Opening bootloader
With enough battery in your phone (80%), you can follow the Motorola official guide which steps are:
1. Backup everything you need. Your phone will be reseted including the internal sdcard.
2. Into the phone, enable the Developer Options clicking 7 times over the version (About section in the Settings). Go to Developer Options, click the OEM unlock option to enable it. Also enable USB debugging.
3. Install the Motorola drivers in your computer, but (in my personal experience) not the Android SDK suggested in the official guide. Instead, extract these adb/fastboot files in a blank folder of your computer.
3.1) Do not use other adb/fastboot binaries: I cannot guarantee they will work.
3.2) You need to use a USB 2.0 port of your computer. Some users report that USB 3.0 will also work.
4. Open a command line window in the adb/fastboot folder (step 3), reboot the phone into the bootloader (see adb command below or press power + volume down buttons). Plug the phone on computer (see 3.2 above). Test the connection and run the command to get the code for unlocking:

5. You’ll need to join 5 codes and, after logging into your own Motorola account, check by clicking the button “Can my device be unlocked” (step 6) by Motorola here. Read the text: your warranty will be void if you go ahead. Consider if you have enough knowledge, time and money to deal with a troublesome (or bricked) device. Although, it’s not that easy to hard brick this phone (see process E below).

6. You’ll receive back an email with the code to unlock your bootloader (if it is available for your model). Then you’ll run the following command:

7. You’ll receive a warning that all your data would be erased (see step 1 above) and need to re-run the same command to confirm. At this point, your bootloader should be unlocked. As an Android restriction, each time you boot the phone you’ll see a warning. Do nothing, wait for 5 seconds and the phone boots normally. Some users bother with this warning and try to get rid of it.
B. Preparing the phone to move into custom ROMs (AOSP) + TWRP recovery
Requirements: unlocked bootloader (see guide A) and no security lock: disable PIN, gestures and fingerprinting (because TWRP cannot read the locked/cryptographed data of the phone). Enough battery in your phone (80%).
If you do not prepare your phone to custom ROMs and if you do not have both bootloaders of the phone in the same Android version of the ROM you’ll flash, you’ll hard brick the phone and lose also the access to the bootloader! You’ve been warned: follow the guide!
Note: if you hard brick, I suggest you be prepared to follow the Unbrick Qualcomm mobiles with Step-by-step guide or the Unbrick All Qualcomm Snapdragon’s from Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 guide, but I never tested them myself. You can also use Qualcomm Flash Image Loader (QFIL) tool.

3. Install the Motorola drivers and the adb/fastboot files.

4. Download the firmware of the same Android major version of the future ROM you’ll install (Oreo for Oreo ROMs, for instance). When (and if) we move to Android P, most probably we will need to follow this guide again.
- Retail (XT1789-05) (Europe/Brazil).
- Other models (branded): ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile (TMO), USC, Verizon.
- Note: NPXS26 versions stand for Nougat and OPXS27 for Oreo. You do not need Nougat versions for anything.
5. Extract the zip contents to a blank folder in your computer.
6. Download the FlashAll_XT1789-05.zip file, extract the content and move all files to the same firmware folder (step 5 above). Be sure to overwrite any file (if needed).
7. Run the Preparation.bat file there to generate the flashfile.bat file that will send the commands to the phone. Credits: the original preparation files were from RootJunky (can be downloaded here) and include more options that we do not need for our purpose here. Also, it includes adb/fastboot binaries that could not work with our phone.
8. Reboot the phone into the bootloader (see adb command below or power + volume down buttons). Open a command line window in the firmware folder (step 5 above), test the connection and execute the flashfile.bat file generated on step 7.

Never ever unplug the device from the USB 2.0 port while flashing the firmware. This could cause a hard brick and your device will be dead.
9. There is a pause at the end. You should review if everything went fine (or even click on the menu of the command line window, select all and copy&paste the contents in a .txt file for further help/revision).
10. Reboot your phone into the system (ROM) and do a quick configuration (remember that everything will be deleted when you install TWRP further…).
11. Into the phone, enable the Developer Options clicking 7 times over the version (About section in the settings). Go to Developer Options and enable USB debugging.
12. Download both the .img and .zip file of the TWRP recovery from the official site. It's the same file for all models/variants of Z2 Force phone. Put the files into our firmware folder (step 5 above). Copy the .zip file to the phone internal card. Note: versions older than 3.2.2-2 does not support PIN/Password/Fingerprint, so disable them before proceed. Most probably, ROMs before July 20th, 2018 cannot be flashed in older TWRP.
13. Now boot (not flash) the TWRP .img file using a command line window in the same firmware folder (step 5 above):

14. Only now that you’re inside TWRP temporarily flash the TWRP .zip file you’ve saved into the phone (step 12 above).
15. Reboot into TWRP (use the main reboot menu in TWRP).
16. Now, you should reboot again into bootloader: inside TWRP, go to Reboot menu and choose Bootloader.
17. Now you will wipe all user data via bootloader. This is necessary to use an AOSP ROM when you come from stock. Using a command line window in the same firmware folder of your computer (step 5 above), run the following commands:

18. Now you can reboot the phone into System using the buttons volume up/down to navigate and confirming with the Power button. You’ll be with stock ROM and TWRP. If you want to move to a custom AOSP ROM, do a quick configuration: into the phone, enable the Developer Options clicking 7 times over the version (About section in the settings). Go to Developer Options and enable USB debugging and go to the proper guide (Process C).
C. Flashing a custom AOSP ROM + rooting
1. Requirements:
1.1 Motorola drivers.
1.2 Our custom adb/fastboot files (others may not work!).
1.3 USB debugging enabled into the Developer Options.
1.4 If you're using TWRP older than 3.2.2-2, disable disable PIN/gestures/fingerprinting. Also, most probably, ROMs after July 20th, 2018 cannot be flashed in older TWRP.
1.5 An USB 2.0 port of your computer (some users report that USB 3.0 will also work).
1.6 Two Oreo bootloaders (process B above).
1.7 Permanent TWRP
1.8 Enough battery in your phone (80%).
2. Download the AOSP ROM you want and move the .zip files to the phone. Right now, we have:
2.1 Dirty Unicorns: no need for Gapps. Official and Weeklies can be dirty flashed interchangeably. RC has a different signature. Support on Google+ page. More about DU kernel.
2.2 Lineage OS 15.1. MindTheGapps needed. OpenGapps not compatible yet. XDA thread.
2.3 Mokee: Gapps needed. Take care: online guides assume that you already have an AOSP ROM, TWRP and rooted device.
Deprecated (?)
2.4 AOSiP: no need for Gapps. XDA thread.
2.5 Invictrix. Gapps are built in. XDA thread
3. Choose the root method and download the .zip files: Magisk (suggested) or LineageOS SU Addon. Move the .zip files to phone. Note: if you bootloop on Magisk, most probably you’re flashing a wrong/different version of Magisk or you did not reboot between flashing ROM/Gapps and Magisk. Note: SuperSu is deprecated.
4. Reboot into TWRP:

Then flash the ROM. It will be flashed in two steps only in the “other” slot. We have two slots, A and B. Our phone can be upgraded on-the-fly because the update is always applied to the slot not booted, the “other” slot. Then, immediately, flash the .zip TWRP or you will lose it.
5. Go to Reboot menu of TWRP and reboot into bootloader. Then, in the folder with adb/fastboot binaries (see 1.2 above), you need to wipe data (including sdcard) with the following commands:

6. Now you need to reboot the phone into System using the buttons volume up/down and confirming with the Power button (or typing fastboot reboot into the command line windows). You’ll be with an AOSP ROM and TWRP.
7. Once into the phone, enable the Developer Options clicking 7 times over the version (About section in the settings). Go to Developer Options and enable USB debugging if you intend to dirty flash ROM updates.
8. Reboot into TWRP again, flash Magisk (your settings and modules will be preserved). Note: if you bootloop on Magisk, remember it is mandatory to reboot between ROM flash (step 4 above) and GApps/Addon flash due to verity/slot-swap logic.
9. A good place to read what is not working is in the section known problems of LineageOS.
D. Dirty flashing AOSP ROM updates
1. If you follow all the processes above, you can dirty flash updates because you have:
1.1 Motorola drivers installed.
1.2 Specific adb/fastboot files for our phone and an USB 2.0 port in a Windows computer (some users report that USB 3.0 will also work).
1.3 Unlocked bootloaders (Process A above).
1.4 Permanent TWRP running and TWRP .zip file placed inside your phone and ready to be flashed again.
1.5 An AOSP ROM already running.
1.6 Developer Options and USB debugging enabled.
1.7 If you're using TWRP older than 3.2.2-2, disable disable PIN/gestures/fingerprinting. Also, most probably, ROMs after July 20th, 2018 cannot be flashed in older TWRP.
1.8 Enough battery in your phone (80%)
2. Download your ROM .zip update, copy it into the phone sdcard and reboot your phone into TWRP. See download links here.
3. Within TWRP you should flash (install) things in the following order:
3.1 ROM update .zip file. Remember that, at this time, the update will be flashed int the other slot and inside phone you’ll have both the system before update (in the booted slot) and updated ROM in the other slot.
3.2 TWRP .zip file (step 1.4 above) once again (do not skip this step or you’ll bootloop!).
4. Reboot to System: if you skip this step, you’ll bootloop.
5. Reboot into TWRP again, flash Magisk (your settings and modules will be preserved) or LineageOS SU Addon .zip file. Note: if you bootloop on Magisk, most probably you’re flashing a wrong/different version of Magisk. I suggest v16.0 and, after you got rooted with 16.0, you can update. It is mandatory to reboot between ROM flash (step 4 above) and GApps/Addon flash due to verity/slot-swap logic.
Note: SuperSu is deprecated.
6. Wipe Dalvik/ART cache: go to Wipe menu of TWRP > Advanced Wipe > Dalvik/ART Cache only.
7. Reboot your phone into System (ROM) will use the “other” slot, the one with the updated ROM.
8. You can use XPosed installer app (and reboot).
9. Now you can add your PIN, fingerprint, gestures back until next flashing.
E. Recovering from soft bricks or returning to Stock
If you’re reading this is because you already unlock your bootloader (see guide A) and anything went wrong, but you still can boot your phone into bootloader. Plug your phone and get enough battery (even if you do not see any charging signal).
1. Install the Motorola drivers and the specific adb/fastboot files for our phone. Remember, follow the rules because our device is tricky!
1.1) Do not use other adb/fastboot binaries: we cannot guarantee they will work.
1.2) You need to use a USB 2.0 port of your computer (some users report that USB 3.0 will also work).
2. Download the latest firmware for your model:
- Retail (XT1789-05) (Europe/Brazil).
- Other models (branded): ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile (TMO), USC, Verizon.
- Note: NPXS26 versions stand for Nougat and OPXS27 for Oreo. You do not need Nougat versions for anything.
3. Extract the zip contents to a blank folder in your computer.
4. Download the FlashAll_XT1789-05.zip file (it should work for other Motorola Z2 Force models as well), extract the content and move all files to the same firmware folder (step 2 above). Be sure to overwrite any file (if needed).
5. Run the Preparation.bat file there to generate the flashfile.bat file that will send the commands to the phone. Credits: the original preparation files were from RootJunky (can be downloaded here) and include more options that we do not need for our purpose here. Also, it includes adb/fastboot binaries that could not work with our phone.
6. Reboot the phone into the bootloader (see adb command below or power + volume down). Open a command line window in the firmware folder (step 5 above), test the connection and execute the flashfile.bat file generated on step 5.

Never ever unplug the device from the USB 2.0 port while flashing the firmware. This could cause a hard brick and your device will be dead.
7. There is a pause at the end. You should review if everything went fine (or even click on the menu of the command line window, select all and copy&paste the contents in a .txt file for further help/revision).
8. Reboot your phone into system (ROM) and do not forget, later, to enable the Developer Options and USB debugging again.
Note: if you hard brick, I suggest you be prepared to follow the Unbrick Qualcomm mobiles with Step-by-step guide or the Unbrick All Qualcomm Snapdragon’s from Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 guide, but I never tested them myself. You can also use Qualcomm Flash Image Loader (QFIL) tool. Maybe these Latest 2017 Qualcomm Diag QD-Loader Windows 10 Drivers signed will help you.

I came back to stock ROM. the problem is that it gets stuck in the initial configurations of the android trying to find a wifi network, to continue the configuration, without success, because I see in fastboot that the baseband is unknown, and I also can not install any rom, or recovery image because I have the following message in fastboot: FLASHING_LOCKED. and since I can not get past the initial android settings, I also can not unlock the developer options to enable OEM unlocking. now I'm standing in a rom that does not leave the initial configuration, it does not connect to any network and a fastboot that does not let me install anything. and I also tried the recovery mode and even tried to install an update via sideload, without success. I do not know what else to do if you can give me a light.

I see two possible scenarios:
1. Your bootloader is locked (yet) (see guide A).
2. Your in a "false locked" situation that, maybe, could be solved by resetting data via recovery or in bootloader (with the command: fastboot -w).

I got 4G in any ROM... AOSIP, DU or Invictrix...
Are you using a branded (carrier) phone? If not, maybe you should return to stock (to recover any changes on partitions).

My cell phone and Sprint, I did every process that you indicated, but not 4G
So I followed the instructions as noted, as soon as I got to the root installation part, it started throwing a "cannot mount /system" error. I thought a reboot would solve the issue, but now I think I'm bricked. Can't boot into anything, all I can do is plug my phone in and listen to it keep disconnecting every 10 seconds or so. The phone had booted up fine prior to starting the installation process, and I don't see how just a bad ROM install is preventing me from getting into either bootloader or recovery. Any advice?
For clarity, i'm unable to use QBOOT to do anything since after it hits the "powered on" state I'm assuming it's in, it just resets and does the same thing over and over again

Have you tried holding vol dwn + pwr btn to force it into bootloader mode? If you can get there, then you can use the keys to get to recovery and try a factory reset. If that don't work, go back to bootloader mode and try flashing back to stock. Might double check that the battery has plenty of charge.

I'm unable to get the phone out of qboot (or whatever it's called). I've tried using a blank-flash but all that happens is device restarts as made evident by the "device disconnect" sound playing every few seconds. The phone had around 80% when I started the process. Should I just let it die and try loading into BL after a few hours of this thing power cycling itself?

It's weird that it is power cycling like that. Have you tired unplugging the phone and booting? Whether it's recovery, bootloader, qboot; you need to get to one place or the other if possible because power cycling won't allow you to do anything. If you can get a stable boot in any mode I would suggest moving your cable to another port so any corruptions aren't a factor anymore. I don't think a drain will resolve anything, but I've never heard anyone mention power cycling like that.

Power cycling is just an assumption since regardless of whatever port its in it keeps an endless loop of connect, disconnect". Basically after rebooting the device after attempting to install the ROM is when it went black and started not doing anything other than connect, disconnect

When it's trying to connect do you have a pop up on your pc showing what it sees the phone as? Does it say nash fastboot, or 9008, Z2? That might give some idea of where it's failing.

It appears as Qualcomm 9008
It only starts the loop after starting a blankflash. That's about the only response I get out of the device, otherwise it does absolutely nothing, no combination of buttons do anything

Unlock your bootloader if you haven't already. Detailed steps can be found here.
Download the ADB and fastboot tools, TWRP Recovery IMG file and Magisk zip from the link above.
Extract the ADB zip into a folder and copy the recovery file into the same folder as well.
Copy the Magisk zip file into your phone's internal storage.
Rename the recovery file to recovery.
In the ADB folder and click on the MFA32 to open a command prompt window.
Connect your phone to your PC and go to the Developer Options previously enabled. Find the USB Debugging option and enable it.
Now hold the Volume + Power Down buttons that will allow the phone to boot into Fastboot mode.
In the fastboot mode, type: fastboot devices.
If your device is detected, great. If not, check your connections, USB Debugging or see if proper device drivers are installed or not.
Next, type: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img. This will flash the recovery in a few seconds.
Next, type: fastboot reboot recovery. As a result, you are welcomed by the recovery screen.
Here, click on Install. Find the previously downloaded Magisk zip and select it to flash. This will flash the required binaries.
Reboot.
Open Play Store and install the Magisk Manager. This will allow you to take proper advantage of your root by using multiple modules with many features.

twrp recovery not reading internal storage.
Hi,
I have a Redmi 6 Pro Indian version with unlocked Boot-loader, MIUI Global 10.2 stable. Flashed twrp recovery (Sakura) successfully but booting into the recovery mode I find it cann't read internal memory (showing 0 MB) and I can't flash necessary files through it for rooting my device.
On rooting into twrp recovery mode, first asks for password for un-encription and when I provide device unlock password, after sometime, it shows password failed.
On tapping 'cancel' option, goes to home of twrp with no option to flash from internal storage since it is 0MB.
Fastboot getvar anti command shows nothing [ anti: (blank)]. Fastboot getvar all shows Rollback ver 2.
Please help.
@Aloke17 Your data are encrypted. You have to do format data. Notice that your internal memory will be erased. Make a backup before.

It did not work. Have already done that with same result. Can you tell me if I can flash from external storage like otg pendrive etc.?

Restart again to twrp after format
This is what I did (make sure the TWRP.img and lazy flasher zip (attached) are in the same directory as the adb folder):
1. Put phone to fastboot mode.
2. Run ADB command fastboot boot twrp.img (the twrp image downloaded). Phone will reboot into TWRP. It will ask for password to decrypt, just hit back and ignore it for now.
3. Go to Wipe, Format Data. Swipe to Factory Reset. Advanced Wipe: Dalvik/ ART Cache, Cache, System, Internal Storage.
4. Go to Mount and mount System.
5. Run ADB command adb push twrp.img /sdcard
6. Go to Install, Install Image, select the TWRP.img file that you just pushed and flash it as recovery but don't reboot yet.
7. Run ADB command adb push lazyflasher-no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip /sdcard
8. Go to Install, Install Zip, select the zip file that you just pushed.
9. Go to Reboot. Power Off.
10. Boot the Device into TWRP Recovery (press volume up + power button).
Hope this helps a noob like me who wasn't able to flash TWRP due to strange errors.
PS: Bootloader was unlocked and device was running MIUI 10.2.2 Stable (Chinese ROM). I switched to Revenge OS (from XDA) based on Android Pie after this.

I waana flash xiaomi.eu rom on my phone.
I bricked my phone while flashing EU rom direct through twrp.
I followed this guide and it worked. The good thing about this guide is you can mess up and then get the mobile back to working state. I copied from a blog but can not post the link as i have fewer than 10 posts.
The contents of the blog in case if its deleted
1. unlock bootloader.
1.1 To unlock bootloader linking your mobile number to the device is mandatory to unlock bootloader. Read my rant[1] at the end of this post during the flashing as it takes some time. For now move to step 2 after unlocking the bootloader
2. check if the bootloader is unlocked by running the command "fastboot oem device-info"
3. flash the system image.
3.1 Download the image from the mi.com site sakura_india_global_images_V10.3.2.0.PDMMIXM_20190527.0000.00_9.0_global_0aaaa35167.tgz # md5sum 0aaaa35167e8edd299f0dd9418f04c62
3.2 untar
3.3 cd sakura_india_global_images_V10.3.2.0.PDMMIXM_20190527.0000.00_9.0_global/
# poweroff mobile, press volume down + poweron to go to fastboot mode
3.4 ./flash_all.sh
4 twrp flashing using boot and not flash because flashing to recovery parition is successfull but the recovery boot does not launch twrp so use the temporary method(flashboot boot)
4.1 fastboot boot twrp-3.2.3-0-sakura.img # md5sum 16759dcc425042d6a63b635f777a7690
4.2 twrp -> advanced settings ->sideload -> check both the cache to wipe -> swipe
4.3 adb sideload Magisk-v19.4.zip # md5sum 2a1def27607601ecaa780ee4b15210c2
4.4 flashing lazyflasher went in to loading forever, so skip that. it works without lazy flashing
5. reboot will boot to system and then download the MagiskManager apk from its website
5.1 enable the developer options for adb to transfer the MagiskManager apk to mobile
5.2 adb push MagiskManager-v7.3.4.apk /sdcard # md5sum 16e9ad8767665234dea7896a4137288e
5.3 on the mobile install the apk
6. to test it
6.1 adb shell
6.2 su
6.3 the above command should pop up requesting for permissions for root.

TLDR: Xiaomi don't lie about embracing the hacker ethic. Accept you are evil with some lame excuse that is much more respectable.
It is very evil of Xiaomi to make the user provide their mobile number(thats right, you must provide your **working** sim card number) to unlock the bootloader. They will not unlock if your sim is not active, you must enable internet on your sim, link the sim number to mi account and only then they will unlock the bootloader. If you just use wifi it is not supported and yet they lie on their faq that the need sim for data usage.
Here is the faq they do not say about the sim card requirement . I have archived it in case after reading this Xiaomi might change this faq

Atleast the moto company wanted just the device id to unlock bootloader.
I was rooting for Xiaomi a long back when i saw their faq where the question was "Can i root my mi mobile " and the answer was something along the lines of "Of coures you can, what do you think of us . we embrace hacker ethic. Now i can not find a link to this faq. Is someone find this please comment the link, i will add here.

Just try to unlock bootloader as i did.
After flashing, is there any 'unlock' under Mi Logo? If no, need to unlock again.
