Unlock 5g with root? - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

Hello Guys,
So I bought a pixel 5 from the US (through amazon "003.C1"). When it arrived to my country (Bahrain) I realized that 5g is locked by google to few carriers only.
and I realised that both 5g and VOLTE is not working even though they work just find with my brother S20 Ultra.
I rooted my phone in hope to find a way to enable 5g and VOLTE.
is there anyway to unlock it ? i heard oneplus users had to change a file.

I was able to locate the carrier MBN files. Im not sure though if I can just edit them or I will have to have them edited through magisk. it seems like the files are getting regenerated on boot. unsure though

here you go
sorry I shouldve share them earlier

also there are a lot of information shared by NetworkMonster on Twitter regards the 5g locked issue on the pixel 5.

I tried to reach out to him for more info on how to modify them
will share more details if I get a response

In the file

i can see that Bahrain, Qatar and many other countries seem to be commented.
Maybe that's something we need to modify ?

I tried using the patch in this thread. Interestingly enough after using it now I can see the VOLTE option in the settings. However it doesn't seem to work. Even when enabled whenever I'm on a phone call I can't use the internet

I got the UK variant to Kuwait, same problem no VoLTE no 5G

I dont think the variant matters, I think all variants will work with all certified carriers.
I believe somehow we need to add the profile of our carrier to allow for both 5g and VOLTE to be enabled.
If you are willing and rooted try the one on this thread, it is suppose to be for KSA Stc but it might work with yours, however i do not think it will enable 5g, but it might enable VOLTE
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-4-xl/how-to/activate-volte-om-pixel-4xl-android-11-r-t4163217

What happen pro ? any updates ??

I tried few things with no luck so far.
I tried to unpack the magisk module on this thread and replace the the one mbn he use with others. There is one problem with that though. I cant find an mbm file from a 5G phone that i can replace the original with..
If we can have mbm from another phone that support 5g we might be able to be able to enable 5g.
Another problem is that i do not understand these files well and im not sure if i can just modify one or have to replace it, would appreciate it if anyone got a resource or something i can read to help me understand how these files work and if i can create one from scratch

I succesfully managed to enable 5G connectivity for my Pixel 5 in Finland. Essentially you need root and QPST tool to modify the carrier policy.

I think that in order to enable VoLTE, MBN files need to be modified. But in the case of 5G, modification of carrier policy is enough. I originally posted about 5G and VoLTE in another thread and I'll also provide more details here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=83964575&postcount=15

Will give it a try once I'm home and will update back. I really wish it works. But ain't it hard to get to QOST with pixel 5. I tried few times but I will look into the post in your thread and check again

I did flash it some days ago when experimenting, but I’m not sure if it impacts the end result.

Unlocked S8 -> Tmobile

Hello, I'm a tmobile customer that just purchased an unlocked galaxy s8 from the Samsung website. I'm wondering if going to the store and getting the tmobile firmware on it installed is really necessary. I mainly want to do this because of the software updates, but then I thought the the unlocked version might get updates from a different source? Am I right? I'm sorry about this being such a general question, but I just want to do what's best for my new phone. Would you recommend me installing this firmware? Or should I just keep the stock unlocked firmware it came with? Are there any drawbacks associated with not installing the tmobile firmware on it?
EDIT:
To start, will Tmobile even do this in the first place? I'm totally clueless whether they offer installing their software on customer phones or not.
Thank you.
Hi there. Unfortunately, you are going to be really hard pressed to find a T-Mobile rep anywhere that could/would flash firmware w/ Odin. Not saying that there aren't some reps out their that don't know about this stuff (there are a lot that really have no clue though), but this is well outside of what most of them are trained for, plus Odin is only supposed to be used by Samsung. Also, historically (at least the last couple of years), for whatever reason Samsung's unlocked US models have been getting updates slower than the carrier versions, which really doesn't make any sense because there is less to go through to get them updated. That being said, there are several threads in the T-Mobile S8 forum here as well as the general S8 forum dedicated to carrier switching, which can guide you in turning your unlocked model into a T-Mobile model, for all intents and purposes.

The guy that replied first is really correct! T-Mobile store won't flash any phone, don't go beyond simple troubleshooting. It is easier to fly to Mars, than talk about flashing a device with rep. I do hope there are some T-Mobile reps that do really know about flashing, but I just haven't seen one yet.
I am with Unlocked S8 and use it on T-Mobile. I don't have any signal specific issues for example and features such as WiFi Calling, Band 12 and VoLTE all work well. There are few thing that flashing to T-Mobile firmware could give you:
Video calling(to specific phones only)
Advanced Messaging(believe other phone needs to support it)
DIGITS service will be built into the phone dialer.
I was also debating about doing it, but all 3 mentioned features are not wildly available and don't work across all devices and networks. On top of that you will get few T-Mobile apps pre-installed + Lookout app + T-Mobile logo when booting up the phone.
We can flash practically anytime we want, so I would suggest you to wait and see how Samsung will treat unlocked devices and how fast updates will arrive. If T-Mobile will do them much better than Samsung, then I will flash myself or when those 3 features above will work across all devices.
Sorry for reviving this thread, but my unlocked s8 gets slower upload and download speeds than my friends tmobile s8, we are both in NYC and he's getting 100mbps and I'm getting 30-40mbps. I assume they also have specific settings hardbaked in their rom that allows for optimized carrier usage?

the t mobile firmware comes with 4x4 MIMO and 256QAM. which leads to better signal and faster download speeds.
Can I flash just the modem or CSC to get the benefits without flashing the whole tmobile rom?

This is a question I'd like the answer to. I'd like to keep all the Samsung default software features but get RCS, which is the most important thing, and one of the main reasons I'm still using my LG G6.

i think you'll need the whole firmware to be able to use RCS and the tmob features. i personally think the tmob firmware is better since it has 4x4 MIMO and 256QAM enabled. so better signal and service

I don't care about any of that. I value the Samsung unbranded experience more. All I want from the Tmo FW is RCS.
Alternately, if they ever support it using the unlocked S8 FW, i'll switch back to my S8 in a heartbeat. My G6 seems to get tons better battery life anyway for some reason.
Can someone provide a link to a thread for flashing the Unlocked s8 to T-Mobile?
Thanks.

I believe you have to use the "flashing unlocked firmware" because the prince's version of the ODIN will bypass the ROM checksum and let you flash any variant you want. if you use the normal ODIN and you are going from unlocked to t-mobile (950U1 to 950U) ROM it will fail.
I used to be on the unlocked but now I'm running t-mobile rom to have multi-line baked in to the native dialer. and my service provider SW ver. shows TMB/TMB/XAA
All is good and I'm happy with the ROM after few days the battery life seems the same as the unlocked version.
i just want to know if i can keep the bloatware free and just flash the modem from tmobile firmware.
i just want wifi calling, volte, 4x4 MIMO and 256QAM. i dont care much for the multi line feature cause not useful on my end and idk about rcs because the person on the other end needs to have it and i dont really see it as useful.
lol s7 bloatware free firmware was so easy to flash compared to this xD
im running the att variant but im sure all the hardware is the same. so i dont see why the unlocked firmware wouldnt support this out of the box.

When I had my S7 Edge I was able to mix and match different ROM with different modem files ie I would be on the unlocked ROM with the tmobile modem and was able to use the unlocked firmware with t-mobile radios. This is what you want but I have not tried it with the my S8 you can try if it dont work use the prince's ODIN to take you back to stock.

Correct, but it also works the other way around. Anytime you want to change variant you must use the modified version of ODIN as it bypass the checksum or the flash will fail.

[GUIDE] SM-G9600/ SM-G9650 Working on Verizon!

This guide will setup your Qualcomm Galaxy S9/S9+ for use on Verizon Wireless
I have not had any tester for the SM-G9600 but myself and several others have tested and confirmed this to be working on SM-G9650
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP EVERYTHING BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THIS GUIDE!!!
I am not responsible for any bricks, soft or hard, and not responsible for lost or corrupt imei/efs
Boot into TWRP and select backup.
Tap "Select Storage"
I recommend you backup everything to an extSDCard.
Select Boot, System, Data (if you want), and Carrier Configs
You can backup each one seperately or altogether.
Next select Backup again and select EFS only.
This backup is extremely important!!!!!
keep it stored somewhere online or somewhere safe.
If EFS gets broken and you do not have a backup you will not have a functioning phone. This partition is where your imei is stored.
Now, flash this file S9+_ODM_combo_ATTVZWUSCTMO.zip
Reboot to system and go through Setup Wizard if you have not done so already.
Now boot to TWRP again and flash this file Verizon_EFS_IMEI.zip
Do not flash both at the same time, you will be stuck in a ForceClose loop at Setup Wizard if you have not completed it already.
Now reboot and enjoy Verizon functionality with 2g, 3g, 4g, volte, and wifi-calling!!
If there are any issues let me know and myself and others will do our best to help resolve any issue.
Edit: Updating with a zip that is compatible with pie.

Wifi calling does not work just yet but we will get it fixed and upload it as soon as we can.
Courtesy of @Krog18 and @stang5litre
Thanks guys!
This also works on T-Mobile using this T-Mobile_EFS_IMEI.zip instead of the Verizon_EFS_IMEI.zip thanks to @klabit87
I dont see the verizon-imei.zip in OP's post. I'd like to give it a try, or if someone could repost it please. Thank you.

Would you be able to help get verizon working on the g9750, hong kong s10/s10+?
I have a g955U, a g9750, a verizon sim and a sprint sim. If I can help with anything let me know.
Right now, AFAIK, I only have 4g working, mms only works with 3rd party apps, no carrier aggregation, no 2g or 3g, pretty sure VOLTE works, no wifi calling.

I only developed the install instructions and tested methods. Krog18 and stang5litre did the work of getting the zips compiled together. But I would suggest opening the zips in this thread and replacing the files in there with s10 files. Of course you'll at least need root.

Ok cool, I can give it a shot...
Right now it's only speculation that John wu's magisk/root method works on g9750, I suppose I can try it, or just have to wait for confirmed root on my device.
I'm about to purchase an SM-G9650/DS
is there anything I need to look for to get it to work on vzw, as per this guide?
Have any of you guys successfully tried to see if you can get CDMA on the SM-G9750 Galaxy S10 Plus yet?
I tried this on pie with the pie mod and all I can connect to is CDMA 3g no 4g? Any ideas?

I'm just running into this after years of hoping for a bootloader unlockable S9 that I can use on Verizon. So much appreciated to Krog18, stang5litre and klabit87 for all your time and help! Quick question, I'm going to try and buy one today, but I see that on Amazon there are two G9650's. One is dual sim and the other is single sim. But they both say that their G9650's. Will this work on either? Because I will definitely go for the dual sim if that's the case. Thank you again!

Crossflash G781B to G781U1 possible?

I'm moving to the US soon and want to use my G781B/DS over there. It looks like the US version supports a lot more bands for both 4G and 5G, so is it possible to convert?
I tried flashing the G781U1 files via Odin but I get a Secure Check Fail: PIT error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[SM-G781B/DS] Remove Unlock Bootloader Warning

Hi,
I am using Samsung S20 FE 5G (SM-G781B / DS) rooted.
I am looking for, how I can remove the warningns when starting the phone ( unlock bootloader warning screen and info about unofficial software ).
I have tried the solution from this page, but it doesn't work on this model.
Do you have any ideas on how to do this?
Remove Unlock Bootloader Warning on Samsung Galaxy S20/S20+/Ultra/FE
In this tutorial, we will show you the steps to remove the unlock bootloader warning screen on Samsung Galaxy S20/S20+/Ultra/FE devices.
www.droidwin.com
The how to is literally in the guide above, you are just flashing an image file to the phone to over write the one with the warning message.
the FE version is for the 4G Exynos
Hi.
I understand, but for the S20FE 5G model (SM-G781B) with Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, this tutorial does not work.
Odin uploaded the file ( via AP ) is Failed.
The FE version is only for the 4G Exynos? And with android 10 or 11?
you might have to manually copy the image file then via root explorer, but you will have to research where etc.

actually it has been looked into by a couple of guys recently, the bad news is that control over bootscreens on snap FEs is from the bootloader.
there's no way to modify the bootloader and then to get it signed again, removing the warnings is almost certain to never happen for snap Samsungs.

i was looking at this guide on how to do it on the pixel 6 and was wondering how to do it on the 7. what about the factory images from google? can i flash this image instead?
after some trial and error using the factory images that google provides, its a bit difficult for me personally with the amount of free time that i have to intensively research this project. so i gained root, enabled volte wifi calling and 5g using this great guide and enabled the camera sounds toggle using this module so i can silence the annoying fake shutter sound. so far so good. i think that there are more things to do like passing the saftynet thing and maybe tinkering in the buildprop.

Converting Japanese Pixel 6 to Global version
I live in a country with no Pixel availability and end up purchasing one in Japan. Limitations(mostly forced shutter and screenshot sound) on Japan phones can be pretty annoying, so I researched a bit on how to remove those. Search leads me to...

I've managed to convert my JP pixel 7 into global version thanks to that post above by following the instructions from HarryShan.

UPDATE: I Successfully changed the help of @HarryShan instructions and using the app of hex editor in Playstore.
Big thank you for sharing this and to @HarryShan for the simple instructions.
I wanted to contribute in a tiny way since I didn't see it in this thread.
The JP SKU for Pixel 7 is G03Z5
For the other 2 SKU numbers
GQML3
GVU6C
I used the first one since it is listed to have support for both 5G networks. Source: https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-7-5g-support/

I think the GQML3 version is only for Verizon units, which is considered locked. I'm not sure if that will affect your connectivity in any way if you're not on Verizon. The GVU6C is the unlocked version which is meant for global use on any carriers.
Thank you @wlteh for the info. I haven't actually inserted my SIM yet to test so I will change to the GVU6C version beforehand.
Also if anyone plans on unrooting the phone, don't forget to flash the stock image first. I got a "No operating system could be found" message after I bootlocked my phone. Luckliy "volume down + power button" combo got me back into fastboot so I could unlock the bootloader again.
