debloating/remove Google and Xiaomi-apps - Redmi Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hi!
I've unlocked the bootloader, and got Magisk installed (patched?), and I'm granted root.
And I got the possibility, and am able to uninstall Google- and Xiaomi-related apps that I don't either need or/and want on my device.
So I wanted to ask if there's some list someone can refer me to that's updated, and reliable year 2020?
Since I'm good with removing apps/packages that I shouldn't, since I mostly end up in bootloops, having to restart with everything, so that's the reason why I ask?
My goal in the end is to be able to get rid of as much as possible of Google and Xiaomi-related APK's/packages.
With best regards.

Check attachment, long list
Also you need to disable ads, find youtube videos for info.
I don't remember the exact steps, quite easy but take time.
ps.
I'm on MIUI Global 12.0.4
Rooted with Magisk 20.4
Regards,
kevin168

You can disable pre installed apps permantly, without uninstalling them (I mean, changing the system).
Code:
pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.chrome
Change com.android.chrome to desired package name.

Try disabling the updater app without uninstalling it.
Type this on command line:
pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.updater
May I ask why you want to keep on MIUI V12.0.4.0 ?

ok good question there are programs which i want to install in the phones for my children after i have rooted so my fear is once they update the phone the root will go away and the programs will be erased

Certainly.
I'm not sure about it.
But probably there are many and many apps designed for parental protection.
You need to try each one and see if it is enought to you.
I have an ideia.
You can install another launcher (like nova launcher) and hide unwanted apps from drawer.
Good luck

ok thank what about the auto firmware update how can i disabled it

"the root will go away" you need to flash using fastboot and avoid flashing the boot partition and root will keep working.
"programs will be erased" you don't need to erase your data for upgrading. you can flash and update your system without wipe data.

P20 Pro Telus Rooting

Hey everyone I'm looking to root my Canada Telus P20 pro. I'm looking to Unlock my phone , install twrp (or on ramdisk) , SuperSU or magik my stock room.
downloaded Tool All In One but it doesn't support my device: CLT-L04. The text in blue means it's "unsupported"
After reading around some more I came across this thread. Which explains you can get the key and unlock the phone yourself, HOWEVER the website does not have CANADA line. I can't pass the sign up screen because it needs to send a text me to verify but the area codes are non-canada.
Also came across this thread. Can some explain how this works?

Hey I was able to unlock my bootloader through the website. This laptop had internet explorer and for some reason I wasn't able to pass the sign without providing # verify code.

Also any recommend detoxed stock ROMs ?
I rooted my phone without all in one tool, as it doesn't support my device. Unlocked my bootloader, fastboot flash TWRP through minimal android drivers using command prompt.

Good stuff. You made it this far. Now there is this one rom but you have to rebrand the phone to L29 using Funky Huawei or something like that but then even if you manage to do that there is only one stock rom and one aosp rom I don't think either are worth losing VoLTE over but that's me.

Thanks,
Here is my problem. Everytime I restart my phone Swift keyboard reinstalls itself.
Root uninstaller pro reports I'm rooted but system partition isn't r+w (read / write) so all I can do is disable applications but some of them re-enable itself apon restart...
Also if I update magik manager to latest version , causes magik manager to close when I tap the icon. Which means any application that requires root also closes when trying to request root. I have to uninstall magik from system settings. Reboot into TWRP and flash old magik version.

Yes. I noticed that too. So I didn't update from the app again. Just use titanium backup to freeze or uninstall system apps.

Urgent help regarding downgrading from pie to oreo or nougat....

Hi. i need urgent help regarding downgrading my galaxy note 8 from pie to oreo or nougat. i am using android pie from last 1 month. some of my apps stop working so i decided to downgrade from pie to oreo. i had downloaded oreo firmware december 2018 version from sammobile and tried to flash with odin 3.13.1 but it failed. i had tried different versions of odin but every time flashing stuck at set partition nand write start.i always run odin as administrator. i also tried to flash different firmware version like sept version of oreo but still it failed. i downloaded nougat firmware from sammobile. it flashed normally and i was happy but when my phone restarted i was shocked. my device was factory reseted but with android pie version. it looked flashing nougat only formatted my device. i am tired. i tried every damn thing. i tried changing usb port, tried differant usb cable, reinstalled device drivers, made sure that usb debugging is on , even tried on differant pc. but no result. then i tried emergency software recovery in smart switch. if i connect my phone switched on then smart switch discover my device but when i connect my device in download mode then smart switch says that device not supported. i contacted service centre but they say they do not downgrade the device.please please please someone help me. i am attaching a screenshot of odin stuck at nand write start.

Unfortunately you can't downgrade. Once you have flashed a higher bootloader version you are stuck with it.
If you are on bootloader v5 you may be able to downgrade to the last Oreo build, I am not 100% sure on that though.
Only if they are same bootloader

You need to be rooted to be able to get that working again, some roms also have that patched already...
Although the thread is about the s7 I believe it is exactly the same for our note 8.

I dont want to root again.... rooting will not let banking apps work.moreover if i wanted to root. Root files for note 8 pie are not available right now. I installed patched app but it does not have heart rate monitor and spo2 which renders heart rate sensor useless.... thats why i am so desperate for that app

You can flash TWRP, copy /system/build.prop to the PC or SD Card, edit it on the PC, put it back in /system.
Once you are done, just flash stock revovery via TWRP.
It sounds hard, but it's eazy if you know what you are doing. Banking apps will still work, and with build.prop edited s health will work too.
I am not gonna walk you trough the entire process but this is a summary.

Oooh that, it's nothin.
You just need to hold volume up + bixby and power just before the phone auto restarts from download mode. When you do that it will boot twrp.
If you don't understand it go watch MaxLee on youtube, his method of flashing twrp on s8/n8

The way I know it, there is no way without twrp or root, and you said you don't want root because of banking apps.
If you flash twrp, do the thing with build.prop, and then flash stock recovery, you could still recive OTA updates and banking apps will work.
You just have to set up s health before the next OTA because that will revert built.prop back to normal.
But as long as you set up s health before that it will be ok.

That was downloading s health 4.8 version install it and open it. It will stuck at loading screen. Update it and it will work fine. Earlier i get it working that way when my device has oreo version. But now after pie update when i try to install any s health apk before version 5 that is 4.5, 4.7 or 4.8. I always get a message app not installed. After version 5 app get installed but again with root problem. Can u help me with installing old version. I dont know why s health old version is not getting installed. I had some other apps that are now discontinued. That apps get installed easily

The reason you can't install the modded version is because the version that was modded is less than pre-installed version on the device. As of now, you can't downgrade apps, only upgrade. Your only option is to wait for someone to patch a later version from the version you got installed on your phone.
I think someone can even just change a number in AndroidManifest.xml install it and then just upgrade.
I'm sure a patched version will pop-up again somewhere on xda, just make sure it's later version than the version pre-installed into the system.

Is it possible to install gapps on the Android 11 beta?

Have some free time this coming weekend and was considering installing the android 11 beta posted here
Reading around this forum I've seen people have had issues installing gapps.
Has anyone managed to install gapps successfully? If not, I will stay on the NX627J_CNCommon_V2.23 build.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT:
I have now upgraded to Android 11 and installed google apps, here's how I did it.
The usual disclaimers apply: DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH ADB, FASTBOOT ETC. I will not be held responsible for bricked devices.
If you wish to void your warranty the command to unlock the bootloader and allow flashing with fasboot the command is "fastboot oem nubia_unlock NUBIA_NX627J"
1. Backup the data you want to keep from your phone. Wipe the phone using stock recovery or TWPR
2. Upgrade to 2.24 using full zip. As I had previously rooted my device so the stock recovery wasn't working and I had to flash TWRP.
3. Upgrade to 3.11 using full zip. Either use the stock recovery or TWRP. This will be the last time you can use TWRP for flashing due to changes in Android 11. TWRP does not support Android 11 yet. If I'd have realised this before I would have tried to flashed google apps at this step. Can't confirm if this works but I wish I'd have tried it.
4. If you need root, install the APK for magisk "canary" (or any version that supports patching boot.img)
5. Open the zip for 3.11 and extract boot.img, copy to your device
6. Patch the boot.img using Magisk. I used these instructions. Reboot.
7. Congratluations, you have Android 11 with root!
If you need gapps and didn't install them yet, it's still possible. Flashing without TWRP was a challenge, but after a lot of hours wasted, I found that BiTG apps was working which I downloaded from this page. I flashed using EX Kernel Manager but I would imagine other apps that allow root flashing will work similarly.
Currently, I have not been able to get SafetyNet checks to pass. I will update this thread with details as I uncover them.
For WhatsApp verfication to pass make sure you have granted Google services framework SMS permissions.
Hope this is helpful for some people who are thinking about making the move to Android 11. No major issues to report yet, will update this thread if anything comes up.
EDIT 2021/02/22: I have repeated this process successfully for V3.15.
thais rom support to flash twrp or google app?

you can uninstall most of the bloat without root, and even more of it with
obviously I don't work for nubia but at this point a global ROM seems a way off, especially given there has been nothing since 2.03

I want to make it stock. Is there a tutorial for that? Their rom has too many issues, including the notifications and that ugly skin with their useless chinese features.

"stock" for this phone is what you have installed now. There is no custom ROM, which is your real complaint. To be honest, I would also much prefer a custom ROM, if you find one let me know! Anyway this is completely off topic for this thread

Yeah, stock is what I have installed right now, which is Android 9. I would like to get the stock Android 11, without their skin. Maybe a GSI rom could fix it, but I was not able to install it. As soon as you flash the gsi rom on nubia ui 8, the system breaks.

Yeah I hear you - it's incredibly annoying that you can't set the default launcher to anything else. Well, I'm sure you can probably! But I'm going to leave my phone to settle for a few days at least before messingw ith it any more
Good luck.

I'll stay on Android 9 for the moment, but I will never buy from this brand again. Apple proved me again that their phones are the best from the market. And Google Phones of course.
I have updated my phone from Android 9 to Android 11 V3.11 everything works fine but can I install gapps and how?
mmason75123 said:

You may want to add in the instructions the command to unlock the bootloader of the z20 since users wouldn't be able to flash otherwise.
I managed to get this working and trying to de-china-fy to have english only. Will report back if I can somehow replace the default launcher.
Edit: got a my total launcher running by placing the apk inside the folder where the default nubia launcher is sitting. With root, just place the apk under system/app/nubia launcher folder. It's not working 100% perfect for me as nubia edge gestures stop letting me pull up recent apps so I can't multi task anymore

See OP "If you need gapps", here's the link again to get them again. BiTGApps-arm64-11.0.0-R17_signed-20200923.zip is the name of the file I have.

Thanks that's a good idea, I'll try it out. Can you explain a little more around the gestures issue, is it that you show the navbar and the nubia controls are now somehow in the way? I've been a fan of the nubia navigation since I gave it a go and became used to it. Having the back button at any point in the screen is useful I find.
I've added the command to unlock the bootloader to the OP btw.

With the stock nubia launcher even with the Chinese app taken out, swiping left always tries to get you to the Chinese google feed like page. I didn't care for that so I replaced the launcher with total launcher which worked.
The problem is that the swipe up gesture that usually pull up the recent apps to allow switching between application is not working. Even switching the navigation from gestures to 3 button navigation and pressing the recent apps button does nothing.
Perhaps I took one too many Chinese system apps out which caused this error or it is somehow tied into system and nubia launcher itself. Will have to test further.

Just to confirm, I have just tried to set a new default launcher as you suggest above by replacing the APK. Replacing with SmartLauncher I couldn't return to the home screen using the swipe up gesture so have rolled back.

It's weird, the recent apps and swipe up are linked to the nubia launcher for some reason. Despite this, I'm staying with with my launcher as I can't stand the apple like nature of the nubia launcher. I think I have managed to get rid of all the Chinese apps though so all good for now.

Question Downgrading from Android 12 to Android 11 without adb

Hi. Is there a way to downgrade from Android 12 to Android 11 without using a computer? I have a firmware package in the root path however phone does not show the possibility to downgrade (i've read it should be in notification panel but it's not). Regards
hello
in first you need the right dongrading firmware for yoyr device :from asus server :
exemple :

I have a correct firmware .zip file in root path however in Android Fasboot menu I have only following options:
- Reboot system now
- Enter recovery (it just takes back to the previosu menu)
- Reboot to bootloader
- Power off
How to use command adb reboot recovery without using a computer (as stated in first post)?
so maybe you have one of the lastest andoid 12 version and now you can't downgrade
if we don't know which version you have and you try to downgrade it's very hard to help you
My current firmware version is 31.1010.0410.72
I'm trying to downgrade by flashing firmware that is visible in the screenshot in post #2
I have the same problem, A12 firmware version is 31.1010.0410.72 , the phone doesn't pop up a message which detected a firmware update info.
maybe also interesting
(in recoverymode only :
Reboot system now
Reboot to bootloader
Enter fastboot
Wipe data/Factory reset
Run graphics test
Power off)
I do have a PC and adb

Hi
yes , I did that and it worked
But keep in mind that the script used to downgrade will delete ALL files on your phone.
And as far as I know there is no other way to downgrade the OS from 12 to 11.

Bernd
Thanks,
1.can you tell me when you did that that the bootloader was untouched and locked ?
2.can I do something wrong ?
3.Is it better unlock the bootloader and install twrp ?
(the basic recoverymode gives me no possibilty for use an upgrade or adb sideload)
4. I want install /e/ on it , /e/ expect A11 on it
I'm still scared:
I get an answer from Asus:
Usually, the downgrade is only intended for the first batches of Android 12. According to the data you provided, your phone is up to date and you are therefore using the most recent Android 12 version. The downgrade is not written for such a version given that it is now 4 months old and was intended for users at the time where the first upgrade to Android 12 did not suit.
I will check internally for you what the possibilities are, but keep in mind that there is a chance that we no longer offer a downgrade for this version of Android 12.

Well, there is always the change that something goes wrong doing this kind of stuff. But regarding the script the only thing you do is starting the script - the script will execute all neccessary steps for the downgrade without user intervention and will only ask for confirmation for the last reboot from the new installed Android 11
But if the script fails for whatever reason you should know how to fix this kind of error before using it.

As far as I know you can not downgrade using the standard installation via TWRP or any other recovery ROM (but that might be wrong - you can try it before using the script ...)

I never tested that OS, probably you should wait for an A12 based version of the OS.

The installation of Android 11 here is only to prepare the phone for another Android 11 based distribution as far as I understand so this can be ignored. But if you stay on the original ASUS Android 11 you should update the OS to the latest version of Android 11 released by ASUS after downgrading.

Yes, the instructions state to download the zip file into the root directory and wait for a few min after rebooting preferably, no need to unzip. However, the person uploading the files seem to be mixing up the file name format for various devices. You need to check which format is compatible for your device : UL-ASUS_I006D-ASUS or UL-I006D-ASUS. The file name has to be EXACT for the update for upgrade or downgrade to TRIGGER. Hope that helps.
Downgrading to Android 11 was possible with either through PC and the developer system image zip or downloading the zip file and letting the phone detect it, though out of the box after updating to A12 the phone didn't detect the zip. I had to go through the PC and run the update_image.bat from the provided firmware.
Problem is, after starting A11, right after getting an internet connection the phone starts downloading and updating to Android 12 automatically. It can't be stopped, or disabled. God damned infuriating, makes me want to return the phone, but I know there are no other options for this kind of phone.
I have no other option than to unlock the bootloader, root, and disable the update apps through adb. At the same time I'm possibly denied warranty. F*cking senseless bull**** that if I prefer to use A11 I can't without problems. Sure the security patches are a bit older, but people make too big of a deal out of them. You aren't instantly getting hacked even with a few year old security patches.
edit:
I have managed to stop the update service permanently in android 11. You need to enable developer options, then connect usb debugging and open an adb shell, which should as for authorization on the phone.
In the shell, type
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.asus.dm
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.asus.UpdateLauncher (this might be just the new phone wizard for restoring files etc)
which should return "Success", even without root. I'm not sure if you need to uninstall both of them, or just dm, which is the main update process. In any case, the whole system update section in settings has disappeared. Fine by me, I can install them manually, which is all that I wanted as an option. You can uninstall other packages too, pm listpackages produces a list of them, and you can filter it like "pm listpackages facebook" to show only results with facebook in the name.

Thanks for the tip. I was laughing since I had the same exact frustration as you but unfortunately my way of disabling the update was to unlock and relock the bootloader without any changes to avoid a possible brick. Unfortunately I noticed there is a bootloader lock count and it changed to 1 after I did this so my warranty is now voided most likely since they can tell it was unlocked with the counter. Any particular reason why you choose to revert to A11? Cheers
PS
Fortunately I noticed widevine L1 was still intact after unlocking / relocking bootloader so seems to be unaffected by both instances.

It seems wanting to root your phones is harder and more inconvenient every year. It should really be a simple process that simply allows you to decide what is running or installed on your phone. I can understand the security implications, but that should be all be dealt with a disclaimer. It is now your responsibility to make sure you don't allow shady programs root access, that's it.
With every new phone I get it's more convoluted, there are less roms available, less people on the forums. Driven to extinction because god damned the manufactures don't care about you after they get your money.
Well anyway, my reason was simply that I really really dislike the UI in 12. Doesn't sit well with me at all, and can't get used to it.
I know I'm making things difficult for me but I refuse to accept that garbage and if I want to run 11 for the time being I should be able to. It's the principle.
I'm going to have to root in the end, but just for now I wanted to test drive the phone without too much work if it's going back.

2. Have you enabled USB debugging in Developer options? I did.
3. Have you enabled "OEM unlocking" in Developer options? I tried, but I can''t cause it's visible in the search but not in Developer options (looks like a bug).

Hi
the instructions from the Beta Website will only work if the phone is connected via USB and booted into the bootloader (=fastboot mode).
USB debugging on or off should be irrelevant for this action (I did the reinstallation using this method with and without USB debugging enabled)
AFAIK the phone must be unlocked to reinstall via fastboot commands . Unlocking the phone can/must be done with the Unlock App from ASUS:
https://www.asus-zenfone.com/2015/10/official-asus-zenfone-2-unlock.html

@bnsmb I have two separated modes - Fastboot and Bootloader (screenshots). Which should be used for update?
Do you suggest there is no way to downgrade from Android 12 to Android 11 without voiding warranty?

I haven't unlocked and did the downgrade through fastboot mode with the A11 image file and instructions from ASUS beta program. If they provide the image freely and don't mention anything about voiding the warranty it has to work without unlocking. Just had to make sure my usb connection was stable, had a problem of corruption during install with one cable.

Make sure your device is visible to the computer (fastboot devices) and is in the fastbootd mode (like in your 1st picture).
You then should be able to excecute the "update_image.bat" file from the package, but I used "update_all.bat". Not exactly sure what the difference is, but someone at some post said to use that. I think the update_image.bat would have worked fine if I had a stable usb connection at the time.
Male sure to disable the update service via the method I posted, or else the Android 11 version will force an install of A12 as soon as it gets a network connection.

Neither of those modes is correct. For me mode from the below screenshot worked.
@Jgruar The version that we uploaded via script is a very old Android 11. How did you update from it to the latest Android 11 version since you have uninstalled update service?
Comment for other people, who just bought Zenfone 8 and are struggling like I did: Consider returning the phone. UI of Android 11 is better than 12, but it's still much worse than Android 8 with Samsung add on (Samsung Galaxy S7). Notification list has ridiculously big margins and the opacity is too big (it's hard to see what's in the background). Also view of last application is much worse (one can see name of only one application - the one which is currently open and in Samsung I could see names of last 5 apps). IMHO using pure android is a pain and it's better to buy some phone with pre installed add on or root the Asus but that's voiding the warranty and costs time.

Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro decryption issues and flashing woes

Phone: Xiaomi Mi 9T /K20 Pro
Current Rom: Miui Global 12.5.1
Wanted Rom: Stock google/pixel with all google apps, but without the awful miui interface
Evening everyone.
I would be very grateful if some kind soul can assist me. I'm trying to replace the standard and hated miui rom with Evolution X (Raphael) rom or any other recommend rom. So far I've successfully managed to connect the phone, setup usb drivers and unlocked the phone as well as used fastboot to flash twrp-3.7.0_9-0-raphael.img.
So far so good, but here's the questions I have or issues I'm having:-
Even though I have removed all screenlocks, the phone files on twrp are still showing as decrypted. I've also deliberately put on a screenlock and then booted to twrp, but I get no messages or request to enter a password. FYI, if I go to Settings>Privacy, the phone does state that it's encrypted.. Other than flashing twrp-3.7.0_9-0-raphael.img, I have also flashed many other versions of twrp, but they all do the same thing, i.e. no mention of any screenlock or decryption.
Although I can flash twrp, if I reboot, it reverts back to miui stock recovery. I then have to reflash twrp image to get back in. Is there a way to keep it installed permanently?
I'm also confused whether I need to root the phone. Is this compulsory and if not, and is it worth it?
Lastly my main goal is to install a rom without the rubbish miui. I still want all google apps, camera, nfc, and everything else to work, but with so many custom roms available, it's getting confusing. Can you please recommend one that is new, popular and has all the standard google apps/rom and stuff?
Thanks in advance.
Apologies - Just BUMPING this up as no reply.

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks again for your help.

It's a version of orangefox twrp with a fix to support android 13 encryption. Guides on how and what to install are usually provided by the ROMs developers, since each ROM requires different software and steps. I don't think anybody can really recommend you a specific custom ROM, since most of them have their quirks and bugs, but I tried both EvolutionX and VoltageOS and both were running fine on my device (both android 13), now I'm running lineageos 20 unofficial and it runs fine too.
I see you want to install EvolutionX, and you will find all info on their thread, and should ask support for that specific ROM on that thread.
Sorry @vito_metallica, when I was asking for a guide or link, is was not for how to install a ROM, but how to install the orangefox twrp. Last thing I want to do is to brick the phone, lol.

Extract the zip and there is a recovery.img file inside. Maybe try it before actually flashing it (fastboot boot recovery.img)
And finally flash with fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
EDIT:
Just wanna say, thanks so much @vito_metallica
Believe it or not, I've now edited this same post 5-6 times, because each time there was an issue, I'd edit the post again and again, lol.
Good news! I've managed to successfully install the EvolutionX rom.
I've had a play around and its a brilliant rom. Just a few issues which I hope I can iron out:-
The Android System WebView won't update - I've tried to uninstall, clear cache/data etc, but it still won't work
Is there a way to remove, relocate or hide the bottom Google Search Bar? - I never tend to use it as I find it annoying, so I would prefer to totally remove it if possible.
Thanks again

- Did you also clear cache and storage of Play store? If nothing works you could still install updates manually via apkmirror or you could install Chrome and use that as system WebView ( you can switch in dev settings ) or you could use Bromite system WebView ( search on GitHub for info about installation)
- If there isn't an option to remove the search bar you could still switch to a different launcher like lawnchair or Nova Launcher ( which I personally prefer), but maybe you should ask the EvolutionX devs first, since maybe the stock launcher has features built in that you would lose if using a custom one.

I always thought by clearing the cache/storage , it would cause major issues, like apps stop working. Am I actually safe to do this without any ill-effect? Will it still remember that I'm logged in and what apps I've already downloaded/updated?
Regarding the bottom google search bar - I think I read somewhere this is built-in and it can't be removed without causing major issues. I guess I'll just have to live with it.
The other issue I've found with this rom is that after disabling gestures and re-enabling the 3 navigation buttons (which I prefer), they are the wrong-way round, i.e. I prefer the back button to be on the right-hand side. So if you know any way of fixing this then please let me know.
I'll post these questions on the dev's chat too.
Thanks for all your help and advice.
