Same here snapdragon variant gets the short side of the stick
Is it a upgrade at all?
not really - you no longer have as close to stock android, no guarantee for updates, incompatibility with some applications, only good thing is the camera
you might be better to wait and see what the new pixel is going to be like
I have both devices, I work in the arts fields, and I value camera quality. It really is a toss between the two, camera wise, both npu help get really good results. I grew up in the eighties and I am therefore used to manipulate settings in order to get the image I want. I am no professional photographer anyhow, but I get more from the P20 pro.
Monochrome Lens, telescopic lens, and either 40 mp or reduced 10 mp photos that are equally good of not better than pixel 2 XL.
On the other hand, sure, the Google device is getting updates, as all my previous nexuses. But if you get into the maze that is sometimes the setting panel in the p20 pro, you can in about phone section help the phone learn even better by telling him your rules about apps launches , fine tune it, and in a week or so your battery life will improve with added machine learning, just as in Pie.
Battery wise it's silly to try to compare them hardware size only, as, one it is to me only a guess allot who will have lost which percentage on a daily comparable usage. Both can go beyond the next day, but you'll have to charge it at some point, that next day anyway.
Lack of Bt 5.0 but oh well, I can still manage with the bundled app on my Bluetooth speakers play in stereo and up to 50 devices simultaneously, mind you. So no issue for me here.
I had no issue with the pixel neither and it has 5.0 BT.
Responsiveness is on par, and yeah stock Google's vision of Android is lighter and less resource hungry, but, the p 20 pro is more bloated, butt the trend in Huawei is to simplify the ui and it's navigation, and make it closer to say a Google device, but not too close. Emui is like a custom rom with tons of options. But you can turn them down if you want. So being a long time nexus buyer and then some OnePlus devices also, it was a jump but as I still have all my devices at hand, I don't regret getting the p20 pro. Which I had to learn how to use, but, once done is another kind of pleasuring experience also.
Hope this helps. I guess phones have reached a plateau and it's just npu in the next years that will improve every aspects of our phone's usage and optimization, but npus are in their beginnings. Cheers.

The learning is not perfect and even if you do change the battery settings for apps, you will still have some issues with certain apps (mainly stuff linking to cloud as they don't tend to backup until you open the app, even if told can run in the background), some apps can still be killed off and you just need to restart them again.
The trend in Huawei is not to make the UI closer to a Google device, but infact the UI is closer to Apple and it is only recently they have added the option to have a proper android desktop instead of the apple style desktop.
If you concerned about updates, application compatibility, ability to unlock the devicethen go with Google otherwise if not bothered about these then yeh choose a Huawei device
True, as I wrote, npu are learning but are in their infancy, what Huawei does is similar to what pixel device can do, but Google has a much better algorithm. So you are right, and some apps don't play nicely with the emui framework, Google photos is dropping frame rates just when scrolling through photos. As for iPhone /ios looks, I guess I don't particularly practice it. No ios device in the house for.... Years.
If only the pixel had a monochrome lens or an optical zoom or a software way to deliver those, it would be great. Maybe it will happen, hdr+ is such a great standard, who knows what new capacity they can bring with the software.
Since Google Pixel 3 launched, the modder tried to port the camera app to the another Android devices, I'm so excited about it. But unfortunately until now the app not coming even to single Sony devices. So, anyone's here please make it available for Sony Xperia X Performance.

I wonder though: which version of that port is suitable for X Performance?
Presumably need to find the device that has the same SoC and camera
With kind regards.
UPD #1: GCam_5.3.015-Pixel3Mod-Arnova8G2-v4Beta1 - this version is working for X Performance, testing further on Oreo 8.1 AOSP with kernel v4.9
UPD #2: also installed HEVC+SloMo GCam (Magisk) from the OnePlus 3/3T section via Magisk, the app does not crash or anything, safe to use I guess....
UPD #3: HDR+ is not working, maybe need some tweaking in the Advanced section of Settings
UPD #4: At the very first switcing to 60 fps mode the app reports a crash; after a re-launch the mode persists as set, video records fine, no idea if it is actually 60fps
Anyways, test out, guys!
P.S. HDR+ engine seems funky for the device: the camera snaps the original picture just fine, but the processing messes the picture up in the end. Maybe should talk to the developer of the port.

Hello, @Ontrinity,
you can look up to post #3 and see that I have already replied to your question (much earlier than you even asked it). Please use the instructions.
In the meantime, consult a doctor on the matter of your eyesight - I think it's alarmingly poor and you might need to use some glasses or lenses.
Have a very nice day, and thank you for your time.

Astrophotography isn't that easy to port. A major reason why even Pixel 2 and OG Pixel will not receive this feature is because of hardware limitations. Even if the developers manage to port the feature somehow, it won't give you optimal results. Although the image processing highly depends on the software, but the hardware capability plays a very crucial role as well. For now, I would say, have patience and see how the porting scene rolls out.
I have a Pixel 3 XL (Which is supposed to get the feature) too with the latest official Google Camera 7.2 installed, still no sign of Astrophotography on my end. I am not a developer but have read enough on the topic because I can't purchase the Pixel 4 here in India, so looking out for as many P4 camera features to be available for my Pixel 3. Sadly, Live HDR+ and Dual Exposure controls won't be available for my device too.
Update: cstark27 has released a port of GCam version 7.2 and has managed to enable Astrophotography on the Pixel 2 (of course, the port is universal like always), along with several other changes. It's worth trying the port on the Mi A3 too. Here's the link to the release notes.

When it comes to Google, everything is done by Software. Astrophotography ports are already available for Poco F1, i hope somebody works on them to support A3 too.

Yes, but what I meant was that the results would not be as good as seen on the Pixel 4/Pixel 3/3a due to hardware. And yes, it works. You can even force-enable the Astrophotography feature in GCam.

OnePlus 6T user here migrating to a Pixel 5. OnePlus updates slow significantly over time. 18th months after device launch your phone is 3rd tier for their development team. Below is the device update history from T-Mobile for the OnePlus 6T. Notice the change in release frequency from launch till current. I'm buying the Pixel 5 because of poor update support from OnePlus. Samsung has superior device software support to OnePlus.

as far as i saw from camera examples, the differences for regular people where not compare to SLR cameras are not so high , they improve the camera at the onePlus 8 pro, do i wrong?
about the updates, the onePlus 8 pro have the android 11 , the onePlus 7 have the android 10 and will get in month or two the android 11, also the onePlus 6 as far as i read, so whats the big deal?
at the other hand we are getting higher battery size, stronger processor, and larger screen , isn't it?

The oneplus does not have official 11, it's just a beta release
-P5 is a more managable size.
-Updates, 3 years of updates too.
-I've never ran OxygenOS on my OP6 because I've always had issues with it not giving me timely notifications. People probably think I'm crazy when I say that but AOSP roms don't have that issue for me. I'd prefer to run stock, maybe rooted at this point.

Disanvantages p5 vs OP8PRO
1. SD 765 vs SD 865 ( way more powerful SoC on the 8pro)
2. FHD/90hz vs QHD/120hz
On all other aspects P5 is better ( software is the big advantage for the pixel5 , where Google is unbeatable)

3. camera sensor is butt old and lens is medicore - its all just software (which has its limits, that in my opinion already were reached 1-2 years ago, but some people always will disagree because they "like what they see and think the past equals the present and the future")
4. no telezoom lens, for thats quite a big negative no matter if it's just 2x or 5x optically there are many many situations that such a lens is usefull for anyone
5. these updates - are enforced, so you're constantly nagged and maybe at a time even forced ("auto updates") to take them even if you know they're unstable despite being marked as stable (and they were for months f.e. on the Pixel 3a - 9>10 and now again 10>11 - just google yourself ). That got worse on Android 10 and likely will on Android 11 and 12 (for the better or worse of it) ...
6. google support is horrible
as for 5+6 - some examples:
https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/70324090?hl=en
https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/69968712?hl=en
https://www.reddit.com/r/android_beta/comments/h0qznb/any_major_issues_so_far_on_android_11_beta/
https://www.gizchina.com/2020/09/26...sh-broken-multitasking-black-screen-flickers/
... and countless others if you search on Reddit. So yes there are downsides (!), especially regarding software (ironically).
Only buy when you can live with that (not saying it's unmanageable, just being honest).
Another example:
Android 11 made matters worse in that they don't allow apps to access storage outside of their domain. So naturally you're forced to Android 11 and get lots of apps that are now incompatible (Stable not Beta). That in itself isn't bad - what's happening is by using the Pixel-Line you're basically a Beta-Testers for Google. All other vendors may adapt slower, but also will have less bugs solved by the time it reaches you. If you can life with that it's fine. I rather don't do that anymore.
Also using their beta builds and release candidates go so far as destroying their phones in an unrecoverable state (and interestingly all searches on Google regarding that lead to nowhere now, but I know it was quite a big thing from 9>10 back then). Thanks to hardware encryption with the Titan M that will like be worse in the future ... I don't trust Google any longer to be honest. Which saddens me, because I'd still like the Pixel line to be better and ... in the end Adroid being more successfull. But for me Google is becoming really evil, that includes Guerillia Marketing, but that's just my personal opinion that I don't want to reflect here ...
