Touch issue after December feature drop - Google Pixel 4a 5G Questions & Answers

Hello there!
I'm experiencing a weird issue after the latest update from December 2020. Since then, my back button (or technically the lower part of my screen) is very irresponsive and does not register touch input. I uploaded a video on Youtube to showcase the issue:
What you can hopefully see is that the back button is very responsive when it comes to horizontal movement; touching far left or far right of the button is still registered as input. However if I touch just slightly below (or sometimes even on) the icon, it does not register my input. This includes the fact that the system does not register the touch at all (as you can see by the active developer tool). This is very frustrating as it also happens with the other two buttons. It seems as if Google has incorporated a kind of "palm detection" or "accidental touch prevention" on the far edges of the screen.
I already activated the "High sensitivity mode" of the display since I have a screen protector installed. However, before the update the issue was not apparent, so I'm convinced the screen protector is not the issue.
Does somebody also experience the issue or may even have a solution for this?
Cheers!

Yes, I've noticed the same thing. Seems to be only the back button.

This is a widespread issue that has been reported by many. So far there is still no update from Google. I am running November build without any touch issues. Google support forum with lots of people reporting.

same problem for me, I hope it will be fixed soon

Looks like this is fixed in the January, 2021 release that came out today!

This issue was NOT fixed in the January release. I and many others are confirming this. Google has yet to fix a major touch-screen bug, almost 2 months after the issue was brought up.

Mine was definitely better in the January release, but yeah, still having the issue here and there (especially when an app is heavy on the processor). This press release should help out: https://www.androidpolice.com/2021/...ssue-can-make-navigation-buttons-hard-to-use/

Same here. But on another side, why do we have to wait another month for a known issue?

Touch Screen Issues

I've started to have touch screen issues the past few days.
Any idea what may cause it?
Sometimes, when I touch the screen, say in settings, I touch one item, but a different item is selected somewhere randomly on the screen.
Happens in TWRP as well. If I select options to wipe, it will select others, and then it doesn't swipe over to execute the action.
No ideas? What would make touches appear where I don't touch, even on TWRP?
I tried the keyboard calibration on HTC's keyboard.
Any ideas? Screen protector?
It comes and goes.
I can't believe no one else is having this issue now.
I don't do stupid things with my phone, like drop it, put it in my pocket and sit on it, and wash it with soap and water.
Since I've started running Lollipop, it appears that my case is causing this issue. I've never had this problem before.
However, I updated my wife's phone to Lollipop Sense and now she is having the same issues with a different case.
Take the cases off, and they work more responsively.
I can only chalk this up to being a Lollipop issue, and hope it will be fixed soon.

I opened another thread about a similar issue I'm having after Lollipop. My gesture launch randomly stops working and I have to reboot. No other issues for me though. I have an anti-glare screen protector on mine, but had no issues before the update. I've thought about a factory reset to see if that would cure what ails.
I'm on tmo but have the same exact issues. This is what i've found so far...
I turned on the developer options and turned on show pointer. This will show you where the touches are landing.
If you scroll down slowly, you can see most of the touches are in line (up and down) and not random on the screen.
I've removed all programs that have screen overlays (screen filter, twilight etc)
I've removed the cases thinking they might be causing the issue, but removing them only slightly improved the issue I thought...
Sometimes its hard to reproduce the effect, its not consistent. So this leads me to believe that it could be a process that's running in the background that calls attention at the moment you're touching the screen, and then refocuses the screen to your point of contact. And in between it thinks you're moving your finger when you really aren't.
In any event, I can't find the exact cause of this. But, it definitely started after the update to lollipop. I had none of these issues before. I even got the phone exchanged because I believed the digitizer went bad or something. But this issue exists on my original phone, its replacement, and now on my wife's current phone and that phones replacement (across 4 phones).
I'm currently working on my wife's replacement (4 or 5 non-oem programs installed) and continue to have the problem. But it is not consistent as I can't readily reproduce it.
What i've done to try and learn more is when I see the screen pointer light up in random places, I keep pressure on the screen so I can observe where the screen is registering contact. It almost looks as if it's trying to pull down the shade. Whether it be because of the dual points of contact and it thinks we're swiping down, or because of another program that is stealing focus for whatever reason.
If anyone else has insights into this, please let us know as this is more than frustrating! I keep calling people in hanouts with a lot of people and they aren't happy about it lol.
Also for reference, we're using ADW ex launcher instead of Stock HTC Sense. But even when I remove ADW (uninstall) and run sense, it continues to happen. So it's not that.

Do you also face touch problem in your K3 note

I'm facing a very annoying problem in my k3 note, that some areas of screen randomly stop responding. In my phone its mostly limited to bottom right part of my screen where backspace on keyboard is located. Rest of phone is responsive except this region. Restarting the phone fixes it temporarily.
But strange part is it doesn't happen on all ROMs, I first noticed it in some AOSP MM ROM, then i think it was Andronium VUI ROM (based on dev 1628) and now on s433 rom which leads to believe its some software thing not hardware thing.
Are there others also which face similar issue ? Any possible solution except switching to different rom ?

Yes, I have this problem with the screen also. I've heard from others with similar issues on other forums. It seems it is a hardware fault or possibly an issue with the way software interacts with the screen controller. In my case the screen is periodically unresponsive around the letter E or R on the keyboard and I have to tap the area with greater pressure. Sometimes it gets very buggy and very frustrating.
There is another possibly related problem when scrolling a web page or dragging - larger areas of the screen become unresponsive. Turning the screen off and then back on fixes the problem for the next 2 or 3 minutes. This issue has also been fixed for me with the kernel from daniel_hk here http://forum.xda-developers.com/k3-...rnel-dc-mtk-m1-kernel-vibeuiv3-51631-t3483573 - the only proviso is you apply it to Vibeui 1631. So while the scrolling issue seems to be fixed, the unresponsive areas around letters E and R on the keyboard remain.
I've noted the problems above would temporarily go away after flashing a new ROM however they eventually return. I've considered buying a new screen but not really sure if its a hardware or software issue - possibly both!

hmmm it's interesting that different people have different areas of unresponsive screen. It seems more like software issue to me, as I started noticing this issue more on newer dev roms only. Today, I've reverted to dev ui 3.1 1622st as I remembered it didn't have it. Will report in couple of days of how it goes, so far haven't noticed it.
I have been facing touch problems for quite some time on the ROW version of the ROM s433. The touch starts acting weirdly, i.e random things start getting touched automatically and this happens mostly in the lower half of the screen. I turned on the show pointer location option from developer settings and it shows the pointer stuck at one point on the screen showing erratic behaviour. Turning the screen off and then back on solves the problem but very temporarily. Restarting solves for a longer time but the problem pops back up.

Touch issues / Sensitivity issues after Nougat update

Okay so I wanted feedback regarding this whether someone else is experiencing this or not.
I have gradually observed during the last few days that a lot of my touches to click have gone unresponsive in Nougat. Initially it was something that I hadnt quite noticed but slowly the trend became obvious. Now dont get me wrong, this would happen a few times here and there with lollipop and MM as well, but the rate is far higher now on Nougat. Especially when typing on the keyboard this means mis-spelled words, missed letters, and accuracy is far worse now.
Has anyone else observed this or is it just me?
Just got my xcover 4 with nougat installed i have the same issue.
The sensitivity is low and i need to press a bit higher finger force to respond.
Even with sensitivity (glove mode) set to on things get worse.
I'm seeing the same thing. What is strange is that I'll see the button highlight/depress, but no action occurs. This is on multiple apps.
On what device/OS?
Sprint Note 5 on Nougat
Did you try gloves mode? Does it work?
the same for me on 920cd and the same iusse using S pen
I contacted samsung Greece about the existing problem.
I reported the problems me and you guys have and the tech support told me that your problems exist because you did not factory reset the devices before upgrading to nougat.
Anyone tried to contact samsung about the problem?
They dont know anything about it.
facing same issue screen lagging in note 5 sm-n920s also tried custom rom but still lagging in typing and scrolling on facebook
I have the same problem on my xcover 4 here!!
When I run the the touch screen test, touch screen responds well, but when I want to write a message or to scroll the home screen Its very annoying. It looks like software problem.
please help
Hi guys.
I have 2nd piece of Xcover 4 SM-G390F (first was change by seller for new one) and had the same problem. First 2-3 days all work perfect.. I have installed my applications, work perfect for two days, but after this... --After wake, display react only in centre area, 1 centimeter from display border no reaction or react on xxx touch. After few seconds (20-30) display react on full range, but with lags... So... I go for support to Samsung official at CZE.
Support tells me, that they don't know about this problem, that I'm 1st who has this problem... And some other bull... about unofficial sell and any other. So I post them IMEI and they let me know, if my distribution is official or not, and we'll see what next. They recomend me to go to service center, where somebody looks on my SM. So I see tomorrow.
ROM - official Android 7 Nougat from start using (not updated from other version)
Deleting apps - no effect
Safe mode - no effect
Factory reset - no effect
Apps to calibrate screen - no effect

Anyone experiencing touch issues?

I've been having a problem with my taps registering. Sometimes when clicking an icon, link or anything that requires a tap, it takes me several attempts for it to register.
Looking around, I see some other complaints on the Members app and Reddit related to screen responsiveness. In addition to my issue, people are also complaining about pinch to zoom, swipes and phantom presses.
Anyone else having problems?
I was having issues with a swipe registering as a quick touch and sometimes not registering touch at all. The update 10/2 from T-mobile seems to have resolved this for me.
Yeah I'm having a few issues with this phone. The phone seems to lag and stutter when scrolling, when it shouldn't. I like to use Lawnchair launcher, but for some reason on this phone my recents menu lags when using a 3rd party launcher. I haven't noticed any touch issues though. I have the unlocked model from Best Buy.
I have a TG screen protector not touch issues att all. I did do the update tho sho not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Do you have the unlocked version?
I have touch issues on mine. I have the Sept 1 update which I believe is the latest update. Sometimes touches don't register or swipes won't work. It's horribly annoying. If it can't be fixed with another update I will have to return it. I just want to confirm this is a touchscreen issue and not Samsung's software bring laggy ( I typically use pixel phones).
I have the factory unlocked version and have noticed a little bit of strangeness with scrolling as well. Unfortunately there isn't a day one patch on the unlocked version.

No T-mobile version.
I have the T-Mobile version and have noticed it. Sometimes not registering and sometimes super sensitive. Trying to drag things around has been unpleasant.
Got the unlocked model from Best Buy, and have not had any issues. Loving it.
I have the sprint version and currently not using a screen protector. It is way too sensitive for my liking. I'm constantly barely touching things and disrupting what I'm trying to do. Maybe once my screen protector arrives it'll help a bit.
I'm definitely getting ghost touches. I'll be scrolling in FireFox for example and all of a sudden it wants to zoom in instead of scroll which is so weird.
I might have to return the phone at this point. $600 is still a lot of money for this to be happening.
I have too issues with touch.
It is very diffucult yo select a line of text, make zoom on images le select an icon in home screen.
My version is from Amazon EU.

I always take the screen protector off, I hate them, but leave increased sensitivity on, screen is silky smooth as a result

Having random touch issues here as well. As others have mentioned, swipes at times register as regular touch instead of swipes. Seeing some choppy performance when scrolling at times as well.
I've been getting ghost touch issues (where things just go crazy, not just a random touch) about once a day since the second day. Sometimes I have to reboot to make it stop. It seems to most often (but not always) start happening if I am in a game and I swipe in from the edge to see the status bar.
I've not had the scrolling-type issues that most people are complaining about.
I just tried turning the high sensitivity off to see if that helps.

TMobile variant here with the September 1st patch, and increased sensitivity on, and factory screen protector removed.
I get the same thing - phantom touches and sometimes it takes multiple attempts to touch something on the screen.
This thread needs a poll, with "everything is fine here", "i have touch issues" and "i don't have the device" option, to see a coarse estimation how widespread this thing it.
I also have touch and zoom issues

Question Touch Issues

Is any One Facing Touch Issues on Moto edge 20 pro device.
Check 987043122 post on the topic about Gpay, he talks about touch issue on Chinese model.
I bought mine in Australia and have the same issue. ehhh... Going to be a pain if I am going to have to go through warranty and all.
Hmmm... Just tested my own device (Edge S Pro) and couldn't reproduce the issue with Touch Screen Test app. Swipes near front camera (hole) work without any apparent issue. I'm using a GSI by the way and I didn't test this on stock FW before flashing (since the issue was not known at that time)...
Though I think if you're using a screen protector (including the built-in one) it'll definitely cause some issues when swiping near the front camera as there would be a hole around it.
Don't know if Google has guidelines that apps should not avoid displaying near the "notch" area, but some games on Play Store do put borders around the screen to maintain a 16:9 aspect ratio (which may not be the same as avoiding) so they're not affected as there would be nothing to press/swipe near the front camera. I recall having read that at one point Apple did have such guidelines (not sure how it is now).
I've just purchased one and I think I'm having issues when using the keyboard. Notice few times.
I'm having issues with my device.
Swiping from right hand side of the lower quarter of the screen, sometimes I get no respons.
Touch issues on the edge 20 and Pro is widely known, and known by Motorola. There is a software release that solves it ending with Q3-19-86 for the edge 20 pro.
It has started to rollout. I have recieved it, and it solves my problems, even with tempered glass applied (where the troubles was most visible before)
Motorola has added a function (under screen settings- advanced) to improve touch screen sensitivity when using glass protector + Optimized other touch related code.
Can't wait for the update...also having the problem with touch, in auto mode as well as 144hz. It is dependent on the brightness of the screen - most likely to occur when above 70% (which for this phone is alot of the time), and I found that temporarely it is fixed if I turn the screen off and on again. The problems are sluggish response to touch, right swipe not working, ghost touches on link that I scrolled over, bunch of stuff opening up unwantedly, typing produces multiple same characters. Hope it is fixed, I really like this phone apart from that.
