i have seen a lot of gps application can do things like record tracking, dislay compass, coordination detail..etc.
but i also looking for gps tool which can tell me how long i have walked/drove? and also how far am i from my destination if i have set the coordination for the destination. i think this function can be archieved without using map. i saw that every nokia s60v3 smartphone with gps has this little gps utility. just wondering is there any similar software in android..thx
This might be of use:

You can use BuddyRunner for walking/jogging times etc, I coded a driving app "Speed Proof", although it doesn't record driving times I'll add it to the todo list for the next release.
As for the nokia handset utils, nokia has a big database of mapping information, so they could easily do lots of mapping stuff on their server and spit out basic info on the phones.
like jashu said, check out MyTracks. Its similar to SportsTracker for s60, but not as "jocky". My tracks is nice because if you share teh maps, its via google maps, not some nokia service that everyone has to sign up for.

MyTracks seems like does not work without network connection. i prefer the application to use the built-in gps module only for positioning.
BuddyRunner seems like satisfying my needs..thx..
My Tracks can still work without network coverage, you just won't be able to get map tiles from Google. For any GPS app, without network coverage you won't have Assisted GPS, meaning your position fix will take longer and be less accurate.

AndNav2 allows you to pre-cache map tiles, I'm hoping they make some library similar to the radar library available to other devs so other applications can make use of their hard work too.

Not having AGPS may take longer to get fix, and in some case it may slightly increase accuracy, but the GPS chips in the G1 will still give you accurate location data without any network connection.
Also AGPS was only added in Android 1.5 so if you are using 1.0/1.1 you won't have AGPS anyway.
gps measure does what you describe
You can try Sportypal,
It is working for Walking, Running, Cycling....and there is "free style" where you can drive or fly if you want ;-)
Sportypal is great for Android, but also is working for almost all phone platforms like iPhone,MicrosoftMobile,Simbian,Java,Blackberry...

While waiting this morning on something, I sketched up a tool to quickly mark spots you're at. Unlike regular GPS loggers, it just tags and saves locations (I frequently need something like this on bike tours).

Looks good. May I suggest enabling the correction features on the keyboard in the Name textbox. (Change the InputScope property)
Sure, why not.
Looks pretty handy.
Is there a way to get directions to the saved spot in bing maps?
Not sure. Trying to invoke the installed Bing Maps with a target location isn't something I thought of or know if it's possible (I figure it should be).
Added some functionality. And I figured, why not put that silly EOS 550D of mine to use, instead of capturing the emulator. Praise my girly hands.

Looks really nice and useful.
What methods are there for exporting that data? Sharing via e-mail? SMS? Would be nice if it could also be exported directly to Bing Maps (My Places) or Google Maps (Starred), if even possible. Or even if you could import locations from those services.
Also, is saving locations based on GPS only? Or can you manually input and specify the location on a map (I suppose it'd be like dragging and dropping a pin on a map and saving that location)?
-sigh- if only all Windows Phone 7 developers could do UI like you seem to be capable of doing.
I haven't thought much of exporting yet, altho I have something on my mind. I figure exporting all of it in a KML via e-mail might be an idea, but if there are a lot of photos, it'd end up in a huge package, tho.
Locations are purely GPS based right now.
Hi. This looks nice. Shame there's no trial though. Does it use Bing maps for the map images or Google maps (or another service)?
Thanks
Bing maps. I could make it use a different tile source, but I'm not sure how Google feels about it, since it's against their ToS.
Just bought this app, not sure what I'll use it for but it looks great!
The update with the prettified UI has been submitted since a few days and is in testing apparently, but nothing happened as of now. The other versions passed testing rather quickly, this is mostly an UI update only, not sure why it's stuck in limbo.
Submitted an update today, probably available in a day or two.
Added a trial mode, allowing marking up to 5 spots. Added an options dialog to change GPS behaviour in background as well as changing distance units (kinda required, since it was Meters up until now and I sold the most to the US). And pinpoints in the full map are clickable now.
Version 1.4:
- Does resolve coordinates to addresses using the Bing SOAP webservice now. Happens retroactively on existing spots.
- Ability to send your current location to someone else via SMS and E-mail. Retrieves the actual address if the GPS accuracy becomes better than 150m. Adds a Google Maps link to the message pointing to the coordinates.
- Can also send stored locations, but formats them like current location messages thanks to late night coding dizzyness.
http://social.zune.net/redirect?type=phoneApp&id=ee9c5dae-9fea-df11-9264-00237de2db9e
Version 1.5:
- Can choose now, what service to use to create map links in SMS/E-mails (Bing, Google, OSM). Note: Bing doesn't have a mobile map site. If the receiving mobile gets a Bing link and identifies as smartphone to the website, Bing will mess it up and show a search site.
- Can save photos to the pictures hub now.
- Alternative coordinate formats. DMS, UTM and MGRS (both military). North and south poles aren't covered in the military ones. Examples:
Regular/Decimal: 50.71625 - 6.01385
DMS (Degrees, Minutes, Seconds): 50°42'59"N 6°00'50"E
UTM: 32 U 289206 5622525
MGRS: 32UKB8920622525
Version 1.6 somewhen in a few weeks will limit sending adhoc locations. Currently, it's unlimited in trial.
1.6 is out. It was held up a long time with certification not pleased with the privacy policies I kept writing up, after being required one out of the blue.
Anyway:
- Distance math is fixed. It was off by half, no one apart two people seemed to have noticed.
- Option to add photos from the phone' library to locations as option in the menu roll-up.
Upcoming:
- Google and OSM image data as alternative options. (Works already)
- Custom pinpointing of a location on a map.
The most advanced GPS calculations app is getting even more advanced.
You may know 'GPS Calculator' from this forum or reviews on wpcentral, wpxbox, addictive tips and other web sites.
http://www.wpcentral.com/windows-phone-app-review-gps-calculator
http://www.wpxbox.com/gps-calculator-wp-distance-area/
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...istance-area-coordinates-of-any-location-wp7/
GPS Calculator is an advanced app that does for free what other apps don't do for money. Now in addition to existing features of calculating areas, distances and projections 'GPS Calculator' will have an altimeter function (using 5 different elevation data models), elevation profile graphs, time zone in any given world location and some astronomical calculation (sunrise, sunset and length of day).
You can make it better by beta-testing.
If you have an unlocked phone just used attached xap file and let me know how it works for you. If your phone is locked - send me your live id (the one you are using on your phone) and I will add you to the private beta.
When using My Location I get GPS Altitude as "Vertical accuracy NaN Km" but when i choose something from Map, the GPS Altitude field is empty.
In both case I get to see the result.
Also when using USGS it says " Unable to get data from the elevation web service. Error : USGS Dataset has no elevation data recorded for the given location"
But thats happening for my location which is India. I guess its only for US.

Thanks a lot for testing it out. I will fix NaN km issue. This is because that GPS elevation is not always available. And it is not available from maps functions, because map is not really using GPS. In this case you can only see corrected elevation. And yes USGS only maintains data for US territory, I will add a note explaining that.
Probably you can check if any location is selected outside US, Just disable it

Might be a good idea, though if in future they add support for more region data - will not work I'll think about it!
Maps Tool - new free app (with no ads either) to work with gps coordinate, maps and grids, including public land survey system (township, range, section)!
Do you happen to own some real paper maps? If so, my new app is designed exactly to make using them simpler. Or maybe you are just interested to learn something about geodesy, navigation and cartography? If so – read on.
While most online and other digital maps are now standardized around using decimal degrees latitude/longitude pairs using WGS84 geodesic datum, paper maps are not so simple. They use all kinds of different coordinate system. Many use UTM – Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system that was developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the 1940s. NATO militaries around the world wanted their own thing and developed another grid coordinate system called MGRS. While these two are most popular there are many more other grids, especially once we go to local level. Maps in UK often use something called Ordinance Survey National Grid (OSGB) while Ireland had to use yet another system called Irish Grid.
To make things even more complicated years before recent standardization around WGS84, maps often used other geodesic datum, based on different models of earth ellipsoid and measurements. In fact many historic reference earth ellipsoids are still used in local areas, since they may provide better accuracy of measurements in certain territories. In practice this means that getting coordinates assuming wrong datum can put you hundreds of meters away.
Maps Tool is a powerful app that allows you to convert data between many coordinate system representations and also adjust for various datum. This app currently supports lat/lng, UTM, MGRS, Earth-centered, Earth-fixed Cartesian coordinate system, Swedish Grid, Ordnance Survey of Great Britain and Irish National Grid and many different geodetic datums, including, but not limited to: WGS 84, NAD 27, ED 50, ETRF 89, OSGB 36, OSI 65, RT 90, SWEREF 99, SIRGAS 2000, SAD 69, Córrego Alegre, SICAD, Astro Chuá and SK 42.
By default Maps Tool uses offline HERE+ maps already stored on your phone, but can also use Bing Maps, Google Maps, and OpenStreetMaps for better coverage. Overlays such as topographic map and satellite imagery are also available. Other handy function of Maps Tool include geocoding (finding location by address) and reverse geocoding (find closest address for a given location), sharing your location via sms/email and build-in database of around 3000 major cities and 9000 world airports for quick access (you can just key in a 3-letter IATA or 4-letter ICAO code).
Using web service from BLM (Bureau of Land Management) Maps Tool also gives you access to PLSS (Public Land Survey System) information (township, range, section) as a convenient map overlay (you can search for parcels by TRS or view parcels around you by tapping on the map).
Last but not least, Maps Tool app allows you to see rough altitude information from the GPS module in your phone, or (available as an optional download) query various GIS systems for accurate topographical altitude information including currently supported: USGS (US only), SRTM3, GTOPO30, ASTER and Google.
Best of all this app does not require a data connection to work, so you can take it with you into the field.
It is currently translated to English, Russian and Japanese and if you can help with more languages - please let me know.

This is good app, i am using that. Thx a lot
i am forest engineer. i wish i could use my own maps on my wp7 phone is there any app for this ? my maps is .tif format about 500 mb data is UTM 36T
As part of my wake up profile, (the tasks for which I have written or poached and modified) the profile resets volumes, display brightness, enables autosync, toggles radios, etc. When the alarm sounds and is dismissed, my phone greets me with well wishes while it retrieves a number of files including a weather.gov RSS forecast for my area. It feeds the result to a text to speech service so that I can listen to my favorite morning weather, news and hear my calendar agenda while getting ready. But there is a problem.
I need different weather updates when navigating just like I only need the next calendar event (Location info is passed to Maps), instead of the whole day's agenda. I don't want to run a weather app because I am trying to conserve resources and most of the good ones are memory and battery hogs. Besides, I'm doing other things with my phone and when driving. I'm focusing on a 'hands-free' experience.
The site: http://w1.weather.gov/xml/current_obs/index.xml; is an index of US weather stations tagged with Lat/Lon coordinates that gives current local weather observations. They are ordered alphabetically by <state> and <station_name>, so 'AK' (Alaska) and 'Adak Island, Adak Airport' is the first <station> after the header information. Of the 2257 stations in the file, each 10 line segment looks like this:
<station>
<station_id>PADK</station_id>
<state>AK</state>
<station_name>Adak Island, Adak Airport</station_name>
<latitude>51.87778</latitude>
<longitude>-176.64583</longitude>
<html_url>http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/PADK.html</html_url>
<rss_url>http://weather.gov/xml/current_obs/PADK.rss</rss_url>
<xml_url>http://weather.gov/xml/current_obs/PADK.xml</xml_url>
</station>
First, what is the best method for searching and parsing a file this big in Tasker?
Second, the task should also use route and speed info (If moving) to facilitate another search to the closest stations to upcoming way-points or destination.
OK, the game has changed...
There may be a simple way around using the NWS XML index file to harvest the RSS link. A Google Maps intent to query for National Weather Service will show the nearest one to the GPS data sent. Each location links to srh.noaa.gov/XXX on its 'side panel' (tap the marker), where the three letter designation for that station can be parsed and substituted in the standard RSS link, e.g.,
Code:
http://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=NWS&issuedby=HGX&product=AFD&format=CI&version=1&glossary=0
Where HGX indicates the Houston/Galveston station transmitter.
Now the problem becomes how to grab the link displayed on the MAPS side panel for that NWS locations website.

AutoTools has a JSON/RSS/XML reader option that easily parses this kind of information. Give that a shot. It's in beta so you'll have to go to joaomgcd's website to grab it.
