I owned mi3, redmi note 3 pro..both phones seems quite popular in xda in term of custom kernel, custom roms and even official CM. Was tempted to buy mi5, but it seems in xda, custom kernel, roms is quite less than other phones?

That's because other phones have either had their kernel source published on handset release or, as is the case with other Xiaomi phones, have had their kernel source available for some time. Mi5 kernel source was only released a month ago.
If you check the ROM/kernel development section you'll see that it is fairly active, and will only become more active now the Mi5 is dropping in price and CM13 has reached official nightlies. More CM13 based ROMs will appear, as will kernels implementing 32GB model overclocking and other improvements.
For value for money (new) 5" handsets that have quality active community support I can't see any other phone on the market right now competing with the Mi5. I have already bought two and would buy another one in a heartbeat.
xiaomi as usual, late in kernel release, i thought they improved since mi3 era, lol..
Man, for the price of the Mi5 and the specs it has... i don't think it's too late.
Obviously there's more smartphones coming out but I think if we keep on supporting and donating to the devs, I'd say that in no time (maybe a month) we will have several ROMs and custom kernels for our device. There's no need to worry (I guess). Actually I don't like MIUI much, but right now (today) is the best ROM for daily usage. I will switch to CM when I think it's the best time to. But, I've actually donated and done my help to those who are developing it. Done my part, and hopefully will have a great ROM in no time.
Yes, Xiaomi isn't a great "dev friendly brand" but the actual released kernel is a start. I think MIUI will upgrade to Nougat in the near months, and if the sources come out, it's surely great news for us. Just keep on waiting and take advantage of the great device Mi5 is.
I gave up on the mi5, lack of effort from Xiaomi makes the device pretty poor device.
Ordered an One plus 3t, when i get it i will sell my Mi5, it will be my last Xiaomi device ever.
Mi5 not really popular . But it good phone with cheap price and good spec . I dont even care about Xiaomi not making this phone really good . As long as i can use CyanogenMod even it official or unofficial .
The problem is not the developers at xda, but without proper sources from xiaomi there will not be bugfree CM or any other roms.
I have an old mi note 5 pro which I gave to my girlfriend and that phone already has many stable android 10 ROMs, along with havoc and pixel experience, and it didn't even get an official android 10 update.
This phone has official android 10 from xiaomi but there aren't any aosp based ROMs on it. All the major ones have been abandoned and there aren't too many in general anyway. Why is that happening? Is it specifically hard to make ROMs for this phone?

what do you mean by dev support so bad?iff you can question dev like this "quote" (Is it specifically hard to make ROMs for this phone)..why dont you try to make one?dont throw stupid question on this forum..to make a custom rom first you need free time..second need a team to develop 1 rom..third you not getting paid for what you did (yes you can put your donation link in the post but not all user will donate to you..dumn kiddo
Basically stick with MIUI if you want a functional phone with updates for like 2 years. Then you can rely on 3rd party developers. But then again software for your device is not guaranteed. Or better should had bought OnePlus 7/t/pro instead. Xiaomi has a very bad record of updating their device. It's called planned obsolescence. It's better if you learn how to make ROMs if you want to keep your device updated. You can't trust and rely on anyone these days.
Cheaper devices which have lost support tend to get better dev support.
I'd imagine more android 10 roms when the official kernel sources for it are released. If it were never to get Android 10, then devs may see it worthwhile to backport kernels.

Because you haven't out baked any ROMs.

Let's not act like the folks at the MI forums and discuss it rationally instead of lashing out at OP.
My guess is that K20 series is rather new series and has lower salse than extremely successful devices like Note 5 pro. So it has smaller dev base and availability of raw materials yet.
Instead of giving cliche answers like "developers have life too", "why don't you make rom yourself".
Why can't we discuss lack of Android 10 roms for our device? OP asked the right question.
As far as I know, we don't have stable device tree for Q. Xiaomi doesn't release device trees. Abhishek(dev of LineageOS 10) has a working device tree but he wants to make it stable and then release the sources. Once he releases that i think then we will get more Q based custom roms.
Yeah It is not worthy changing to custom rom. Better stay on stock atm
Because it's still a rather new phone, atleast the global one. Custom ROMs in general seem to be dying, probably because official ROMs are getting better and better compared to the times when i had my HTC HD2.
I don't know why everyone is so butthurt about this post, I'm legitimately curious why this is happening. I'm not bashing the devs at all, maybe 10 year old children that can't even comprehend a text should stick to their telegram groups.
Thanks to everyone who posted something actually useful, it seems the official device tree hasn't been released it, hopefully xiaomi will take care of this soon.

At the moment there is a bit of inactivity whilst many devs are waiting for android 10 sources to be released by Xiaomi. I'm guessing most devs don't want to waste time working on fixing Pie ROMs when they know everyone will abandon them once stable 10 ROMs arrive.
Give it a month or so and you'll see done movement again.

Good point, I haven't considered that. This phone is very popular and I was really curious why there are so few custom ROMs, maybe we will get more goodies on android 10.

Really don't need this kind of rage, take it easy. I believe op was just asking. Just a curiosity... Despite your concerns about the words he used to start the talk. I believe it is pretty easy to understand he was not demanding anything from the good guys, the devs, or even trying to complaining about it.
Seems that there's no way to have a civilized conversation about it without getting someone any hassle, saying "why don't you develop? Douchebag".... Not first time I saw this. Weird thing indeed...

Hi all,
I am wondering whether the source code for the Mi11 has been released and if yes, if it is enough? I know source code for the Mi9T Pro was released but the fingerprint scanner didn't function properly on customs ROMs because of non-released code. Is something like that the case with the Mi11?
I read here: https://www.xda-developers.com/xiaomi-mi-11-kernel-source-code/ that the source code is released with the launch and here on Github I see files. But can someone tell me whether this is enough? If yes, why isn't there a development for custom ROM started yet? The device too expensive? Not interesting enough? Too difficult? I just really want to understand.
The source is there and should be fine. However, no one is yet interested in making ROMs both because the phone is expensive and because it's new and well supported by Xiaomi themselves (remember most custom ROMs come from indian developers, and for India this device is out of reach for many people for now). The Mi 10 also took a lot of time to get good ROMs, just wait a few months and they'll probably start to pop up, especially once it becomes last gen and people start buying it for cheaper.

Yea you are right. It's gonna take while. Already happy it has xiaomi.eu
No custom ROMs. Stupid Xiaomi please release the source and kernel. We are past 4 months and nothing till now. Oneplus 9 pro on the other hand released 5 days before this phone and I see 10+ custom roms in the forum already. Such a great phone with so much user reach and xiaomi doesnt care about software. Only people from China are getting updates every 3 weeks or so (iam not talking about xiaomi.eu rom). Completely neglected Global rom and India rom.
Issue with this company is: It releases 10+ phones in the same price range with different hardware every 6 months and forgets about software completely. If you cant update the software, release the source and kernel for developers atleast!
Agreed
Why u guys talk so much about custom rom?
Im satisfied with eu rom now
Almost nothing need to change
definitely.
They did release kernel sources.

easy easy bro, calm da f*** down.
it's all have a solution, why don't you focus on what actually you using phone for? like play game, multitasking, or take a photo ,etc..
so, let take some experience with another users like me, why you dont try MIUI MIX (MMX Team) it's not bad because it's base on EU ROM.

I can create a 5 hour video with all the bugs that I have on xiaomi.eu rom. Its not perfect if you don't look at it in that way. Iam a developer myself and i dont look at things like a end user does. Sorry if i hurt your feelings.

How do sales compare to s21u or the one plus 9 pro ?
I think the global variant is overpriced tbh.... especially for a Xiaomi phone
Apple can get away with ridiculous prices and even Samsung to some degree but Xiaomi doesn't ring synonymous with prestige flagship grade experience
They're the cheap and cheerful brand...
My friend bought a Poco f3 yesterday and it's a great phone for it's price

Aren't we supposed to talk about it? I personally would prefer a custom rom like LineageOS over MIUI anytime.
Good for you, you are satisfied with it... i am not. And i totally agree with the thread-owner, i start to hate it too.
I don't hate my phone, I just hate Chinese Firmware. Now I'm waiting for Bootloader and will install Xiaomi.eu
Agreed. Never seen something as horrible as MIUI. Nothing but stupid effects.
If i knew that beforehand, I'd never had bought a xiaomi.
And no, the .eu rom doesn't fix any of its problems.

Unbelievable how ignorant (not to say different word) you should be to buy a phone than wait and hope for a custom rom (even though nobody on planet earth promised one).Than you go online and trashtalk the company, the phone and so on,only reason being your own wrong choice.
This is pure stupidity at its best.

Not sure why you get personal here.
I always had phones using a clean and functional OS. I knew that the asian customers prefer it more colorful and I expected exactly this. But what Xiaomi delivers with MIUI is a slap for everyone not deepdiving into their software beforehand.
Why is a compass app installed systemwise? Yes you can disable it and even uninstall it via adb. Why can't you hide apps in the drawer? Lets say I dislike their contacts app and want to use another one, I then have to have both on the drawer without the ability to hide theirs (yes, you can hide some non-system apps behind the app-lock). Why does Onehanded Mode not work with gestures? Why do they force you to wait for 7 days before you can unlock the bootloader and why do you need a sim-card in the phone for this and give them your number?
The "cleaner" app does nothing but spying, even worse that such software doesn't even (ever) work on Linux based OS. Not mentioning the "security" app that is another piece of scam software they integrated some system relevant services into while on the other hand, blocking essential android services and thus create a lot of issues non-existant on other devices.
If you ask me, MIUI as a whole is nothing but a scam. Google sniffing apps can at least be disabled, no chance for the Xiaomi ones.

Here's the reality, there really isn't that much demand for custom roms. However, there are two that I know of, Xiaomi.eu and MIUI MIX. ONE OS may also have one, but I am not sure on that though. And even though you do need kernel info, you can't expect them to release the proprietary info regarding the rear screen and other features. So even if a rom could be made, there are many things that the developers would not be able to make work. For example, the Mi 10 Pro went the greater part of a year before one started to see custom roms for it. Custom roms, back in the day, were updated regularly and in some cases nightly. Now the original rom and security update can be several months old and it might also be several months before a new version appears. In my opinion, it's really not worth it nowadays and the most of the devs seem to have found that out too.
As for their marketing, I too feel they release to many phones, but apparently it's working as they have become number one in the world.
I don't have any problems with the device, just that I am used to modding my devices and Samsung has made it very unappealing to root/unlock their phones. So if I trade this device, which is still under warranty, will it be a good deal?
that's gotta be entirely your decision as you've got to live with it. Oneplus 9 might've fixed some of it's heat issues or the community might've solved it, but look into that first. don't know much about the Xiaomi other than you need custom firmware because the stock one isn't good and the cameras aren't bad.
I'm currently running Lineage 19 GSI with a modified quick settings pull down, I'm rooted and have TWRP. the only thing I'm missing that I want is v4a and I could submit logs to get that fixed if I wanted. Samsung phones have had Knox for nearly a decade now, accepting Knox's demise going in is standard for Samsung modders. this phone is a rare chance to a Samsung with a snapdragon that can be rooted/modded for many people. custom roms are being worked on but both devs are new to Samsung and really struggling with a final major bug. if they overcome the problem custom roms will start to come thru with greater ease.

Well that last line gives me hope.
well the truth is the two guys working on roms have been struggling with getting the SIM cards to be recognised for months, to the point of needing to walk away for their sanity. the projects may resume or might not. there are one or two other devs with this phone who've said they'll be waiting until all the official updates are finished releasing. again there, no guarantee they'll even still have the phone by that time.
most guys are using GSI roms for now, they're OK but a full custom rom would be better.
If you like custom roms and development related fun with your device, you should go with xiaomi, xiaomi devices has better developement range and easy way to play with it, but oneplus hasn't as i also own 9rt and i am not a big fan of google dialer and because of only dialer i want to change rom to chinese( as 9rt has only chinese rom and chinese rom might have oneplus dialer ) and i am unable to find a proper thread or guide to get familier with oneplus phone - unlocking bootloader, flashing rom and vice versa. but in same case with xiaomi its easier and lots of videos on youtube too to get it done.
but mi 11 x pro has not a lot of custom roms, instead of this mi 11x has a wide range and you should try this
But one thing keep in mind among all devices you said and includes mi 11x samsnug s20 fe is best as i used all of this devcices and currently i am on 9rt samsung is good with stock rom you do not need to flash any custom rom.
mi 11x has best performance according to price but worst camera, mi 11x pro good phone but so so camera, 9rt is good in 3 of this but no wide range of custom developement.
