Bug in Android 11 AOD and flashlight. - Sony Xperia 1 II Questions & Answers

Hey there guys,
There is a bug with android 11 on my Xperia 1 II. I have tried to reset my phone and wipe everything. That fixed the problem for a moment, and then it came back. AOD doesn't work, and when that occurs the flashlight doesnt stay on when I lock the screen, and beside that, when all this happens the volume adjusting makes the phone vibrate which is weird.
Am I the only one with this?

AOD freezes for me and I have to open and close my window case for the time to update

I changed the AOD to smart mode, and it seems to be working okay now.

But now it only shows the screen when you pick up the phone. I want it to be on all the time. I am used to just look at the phone when it is charging or near the bed so I can see the time without doing anything. Now I have to open and close the smart view case in order to show the lockscreen and update the time.

[Q] What is the "Auto sleep"?

As the title says, what is it? I mean how does the auto function? couldn't find anything about it on XDA or the Owners Manual.

I'm guessing that it adjusts the timeout accordingly.
Like if you were to put it down (but face-up) it'll decrease the timeout down to 15 seconds or something like that. Whereas if you're holding the phone normally, it'd be something like one minute.
Probably just smart stay esque feature.
Quick check of camera to see if your looking at the phone. Not like this is a Samsung thing, there are apps in the play store that do this.
Yeah it's screen time out so if you set it for 1 minute the screen will stay on for 1 minute then shut down
Yeah its like smart stay, try waving your hand in front of the phone and not touch the phone, it wont sleep. Dont work very well as sometimes I lie phone down for a sec but as there is no movement it sleeps quickly.

Nice. I keep wondering why HTC doesn't advertise some of these features - Samsung keeps touting them but even though HTC has something similar, sometimes better and sometimes not, it isn't mentioned anywhere. They really need to up their marketing efforts.

It is autosleep OR a time. So it's definitely not 1 minute. Will have to try this
I sent the question to HTC & today got this lame answer:
Please note that you can use the sleep mode in order to put the device in standby mode when you are not using the screen for a long time the screen will go in sleep mode " Standby" automatically

After doing some testing, I have found the following pattern with "Auto sleep":
If the device is held vertical (holding the phone up) or at an angle, in other words, you are actually looking at the screen; the display will sleep in about 1 minute of not touching the display.
If the device, after use, is put on a table (horizontally), the display will sleep in about 15 seconds.
So it seems that "Auto sleep" uses the gyro sensor, not the Camera.
Sounds similar to Screeble. ...a must-have app IMO.
I think auto sleep uses the camera and the proximity sensor to determine if you're looking at the phone, because for down reason it doesn't work in a completely dark environment like a bedroom at night, even though I was looking at the phone dead on..... It's an interesting feature nonetheless

No must-have anymore... with this auto sleep function built in. It's in HTC One X too with the 4.2.2 update.

As stated before, it's probably using sensors to increase time-out, not to disable time-out entirely, like smart-stay does, probably using less energy then smart-stay.

Will give it a try since it is one less app on the phone... I like that I could set up the angle for which it is activated both for portrait and landscape with Screeble. I don't control anything with the sleep function. Also, I get the impression the phone will still shut off at some point...doesn't with Screeble.
Answer
I was intrigued to know the answer myself. Not being able to find the answer, I tried the following on my phone:
I placed the phone horizontally on a table and left it there without touching the screen or moving it until the screen turned off. It took 1 minute for the screen to time out.
I placed the phone at an angle (approximately 45 degrees) and left it still without touching the screen or moving it until the screen turned off. Again, it took 1 minute for the screen to time out.
I grabbed the phone and moved it constantly without touching the screen. I keep doing this for over 2 minutes and the screen never timed out. I got bored, so I put the phone down and from that moment, it took 1 minute for the screen to time out. I tried this at different angles and I realized the angle doesn't really matter as long as the phone is in motion.
This made me to conclude the phone uses the the gyroscope when "auto sleep" is selected to determine when to turn off the screen.
I might be wrong but you can try this yourself. I hope it helps!

What rom version are you running? What you explained would explain why the phone does not sleep when I put it down in the car's cupholder, as long as the car is moving the phone would vibrate/shake & hence does not turn off the display. This is with the Android 4.3 updates (leaks & official 3.22 developer edition).
Previously, Android 4.1 & 4.2 roms, if the device was held vertical (holding the phone up) or at an angle, in other words, display would sleep in about 1 minute of not touching the display. If the device, after use, was put on a table (horizontally), the display would sleep in about 15 seconds.

I'm using CleanRom 6 with Android 4.3. Now that you mention it, I realize I hadn't noticed this on 4.1 and 4.2. I use Pandora all the time. I started wondering when my phone would stay up the whole time I was driving. I never had this issue with 4.1 and 4.2. Good to know!

Incertcoin (on SVN R111) now has the auto sleep working like before, 1 minute if held upright, or 15 seconds if placed on a table. I think @baadnewz used the "SmartDim.apk" from an older rom that before auto sleep changed .

yes i used the 4.2.2 base one because i didn't have time to properly debug the current one and fix, but so far using the old one doesn't break anything it just fixes the issue. credits are due to @yxtl he had the issue and stress him enough to make trial and error .
I believe it uses the gyro/motion sensors to adjust the timeout...if I have my HTC One docked in my car with auto sleep enabled, it will never time out the screen, unless I come to a light and stop...but the motion of the car actually on the road is enough to keep it alive.
Cheers

I wish HTC provided some kind of documentation for this...

[Q] Anyone else having problems with the raise arm gesture?

Got my Gear Live yesterday. The raise arm gesture was flaky compared to my Gear 1 but it was no big deal. Today the raise arm gesture doesn't work at all. My Gear Live does not have notifications disabled. I've reset the Gear multiple times, uninstalled and re-installed the android wear software multiple times (cleared cache and data too) and made sure it was unpaired and re-paired on my phone. If my screen is set to off, it will never come back on unless I press the button or touch my screen. If my screen is set to always be on, it will stay in the lower brightness mode until I touch the screen or press the button.
It seems like the motion sensing or the gesture itself is totally broken after only a day. Anyone else have issues with the gesture? (flakiness or otherwise)

Mine works fine with always-on enabled. If anything it works too well. I wish I could turn the functionality off because my screen is always waking up when I don't want it to.
There were complaints that it was too sensitive, perhaps the latest update has toned it down a little too much.
You do now need a definite arm movement to make it come on.
Lift the arm and roll the wrist around towards you.

I've had mine since Monday and the gesture worked great. About half way through the day yesterday the gesture completely stopped working. I tried to reboot, factory reset but nothing worked. Eventually I held the power button down for about 10 seconds in order to bring up the power menu. Instead the watch just rebooted itself and after that, the gesture started working again. Weird.

i've also found that it responds to the rolling towards your face more than the raising of your arm. (for me at least)

However, I thought the gesture worked better before the recent update. I don't KNOW that the update changed the gesture but it seems less reliable than it did when I first got the watch. Now I seem to get quite a few false activations and sometimes now have to repeat the gesture to make it switch on.
This is not a major issue, don't get me wrong.

Same boat (reboot, factory reset, etc). Held down for 10 seconds, it rebooted, and fixed!
The gesture does NOT work when the watch is on silent. This is most likely your issue.

This is correct - I just tested this with my Samsung Gear Live. If notifications are not muted, the 'lift arm and roll wrist' gesture will wake the watch.
This works even when the watch face is not set to 'Always On' in the Android Wear settings menu.
I come from the Gear Fit where you can switch off this automatic gesture completely. I hope this setting will show up within Android Wear soon. I drove with my car tonight and the watch was constantly waking up showing me the same card all over again and again while steering... Argh.
Is there some kind of patch or adb setting where I can change this?
TIA

I guess for the time being, you could just mute notifications while driving. Unless of course you want them to come through while driving.
My problem is it is too sensitivity.
Scratch my nose the watch wakes and this drains the battery

Screen rotation issue

Hi,
has someone else problems with the screen rotation?
Actually I like to use macdroid to control when screen rotation is enabled. It will activate based on where I am and what app I use.
So the rotation is usually portrait fixed but when I use youtube ie. the screen will rotate so I can use landscape there too.
The problem is that either by using macdroid or even when I enable/disable rotation too often it won't rotate anymore.
I have to restart the device to have it working again.
Can you confirm this? Or is this just my device?

Nothing wrong here. Turned on the auto rotate, went to youtube, played a video in portrait mode. Then rotated the device and the video went into landscape.

Well, this sounds like app specific problem. Don't use macdroid for such tasks and u're ready to go.

As said it even happens when I press the tiles button too often. So its not a problem of the app.
But maybe the device is broken. I'll try to reset it and see if the problem exists if a few more people can confirm its not a problem for them I guess.
No issues whatsoever with screen rotation here. Sorry.

Yes i had the same issue! Each time the problem appear i have to reboot my phone !
I install phone tester on play store, and it seems that accelerometer stop working (it wait for data)
Moreover, i had the problem in Safe Mode (power on Button -> long press on Shut Down -> 'Do you want to restart in Safe mode' -> Yes)
I think if your screen didn't rotate in safe mode, the problem is not a third app.....
For my phone i will bring it to warranty tomorrow

You can try something else: on google map, is the compass working?
On my previous nokia 7 plus, both compass and screen rotation didn't work properly.
I just change it this morning on the shop i bought it, and the compass is working on the Nokia 7 Plus i had now
Hardly I have to calibrate often. I guess my device is broken so I will return it too.
The new one i obtain this morning already have the last version of android (8.1 instead of 8.0 for the first one), i think the second one was not from the same manufacturing batch.
I hope you will obtain a new phone or a quick reparation!
I got my replacement phone and after some testing I can say that the initial device was faulty. The new one does not show the problems mentioned.

Serious practical problem lock screen

Strange thing is happening recent to me...
Namely, while using headphones while talking on the phone, the unit gets unlocked while in pocket and problems arise with spontaneous keys getting activated.
If even cannot be explicitly locked by pressing the power button.
Have not found a solution to this problem, and it's strange why the proximity sensor does not work in pocket.
Cannot remember whether this was previously, or is it since last ROM upgrade.
Anyone having same problem?

Yep I have the same thing... Today my pocket took 9599295 pictures and movies.. also when I'm a bit sweat my pocket dial random numbers. I've noticed that when screen is touched and disnt recognize fingerprint then whole lockscreen shows up and its easy way to random open dial or camera... Its rly anoying, because I dont want to hide phone screen outside of the skin. (Its easier to break screen if I hit something with my leg.)
Dunno why it doesnt use proximity sensor to recognize that phone is in the pocket like every other brand... :/
Do you have the double tap to wake up activated?
I had this problem a while ago and it was the double tap that played all kinds of tricks calling emergency and taking pictures in my pocket! Disable double tap to wake up screen and the problem goes away.

Tried everything but the problem is eventually still there. Actually I've found a bug, namely the display will wake up once touched several times near the center of the fingerprint reader. Try it yourself.
Not nice - cannot avoid to happen it sometimes even if all options are disabled.

I didn't have this problem. If I try now and touch the part with the scanner, doesn’t have to be just the centre of the scanner, rapidly around ten times the lock screen will turn on, but nothing happens when I touch the shortcuts. Perhaps they are disabled, so the only thing that happens if the scanner is touched again is that the numpad to unlock with pin appears.
This is not good as it may severely affect battery life if it happens a lot. This clearly must be a bug!

Even worse, since it is happening all the time while on a call via BT and my phone is in the pocket. I am now thinking about to switch over to my old MI8...
Cannot understand why the keyboard is not disabled in the pocket. Seems so easy to do it but it's as it seems on.

My only solution was to buy a flip case. At first, I disabled the fingerprint reader by removing all fingerprints and setting up face recognition, but this didn’t fix the problem you are talking about. I don’t really like flip cases, but the Nillkin QIN Smartcase is rather good.
So now I ‘m eagerly awaiting a fix from Xiaomi so I can strip the Mi9 again!

Disabling the fingerprint icon has no effect on the problem we are talking about here. The only way to make the problem go away is to remove all the stored fingerprints thus disabling the use of fingerprints all together. This will shut off the fingerprint sensor doing away with this problem in a crude way.
If you really are looking for a setting, please use the search function at the top of the settings.

Already,,, no use.
Now safe mode tried and no screen wakeup.
It means some third party app issue.
I'm trying to figure out which app exactly.
I had this with my wife's phone.... Screen literally cam on everytime the phone was moved.... She has a flip case, which i assumed was the culprit, and i could see the screen pop on even if she moved the phone to one side a little...
I found the answer to our solution in the settings somewhere under advanced features/motion and gestures.... Untick all that lift to wake crap!
Screen stays off now until you press power button or double tap screen...

I tried the same already but problem was still there.
Since once I reboot into safe mode, there w no issue. then started apps one by one in normal mode,,,, now not facing issue. I suspect one or two third party apps. Still not finalised which app exactly as these apps got updated meanwhile.
Any way thanks,,,,
my issue already resolved.
