I’m trying to move across my calendars, notes and text message history from my iPhone 12 Pro Max to my S21 Ultra. The data copies and is stored in memory but Smart Switch seems to be crashing upon “arranging data”. I’ve restarted and launched the Smart Switch app again and the same thing happens.
Any suggestions please? Are there any decent methods of transferring my WhatsApp messages? Ideally, I only need a handful of my message threads and I don’t really like the thought of using some of the 3rd party apps due to them potentially them collecting my data.
Thanks.
There isn't really an easy way to export whatsapp messages from iPhone to whatsapp unless you use 3rd party app.
You can also export the chat to email....but that is pain and takes lots of time.

Thank you.
I only need around 5 message threads, once exported to email, is there a way to import it back into WhatsApp?

Smart Switch can get squirrelly even when transferring from different Android OS's/devices.
You need to find a work around.
Hopefully on the same device it will backup/restore without issues. I haven't fully tested it yet.
The earlier Samsung Kies backup was a problem child too.
Always use a second backup for critical data ie photos, contacts and files in case SS fails.
The best way to go with Android is to get a model with SD card support and use the SD card as a data drive. Place all critical files etc. there including everything needed for a complete reload. Then backup the card data at least 2X on two physically separate hdds.
im a tech enthusiast i buy flagship always so i switch between apple and different android brands.
believe me its very hard to transfer whatsapp message or sms sometimes between ios and android. to save you time there is an app called dr fone that should be able to transfer everything you have ios to android and vice versa including whatsapp kik viber etc.
Thanks everyone. I appreciate the help. It’s a shame that I cannot seamlessly switch between platforms in today’s day and age without issue. Too many companies trying to trap you to one platform.

Hey All,
It is almost 10 months I am using this LG-P970 phone, but until now I've seen nothing but a headache, does anyone else agree?
My main problem (besides the bad performance) is the incident of losing my contacts.
It has happened to me 4 times until now under Froyo, Gingerbread and even Zeus 7 (the most recent incident 2 days ago).
Simply it happens when I open the contacts list, I see that all my contacts are erased in addition to the call log, and I am very aware it is not a matter of contacts display setting as some people might suggest.
The first time this happened to me my contacts were not even synced with Google because I didn't know the contact type should be "Google Contact" in order for it to be synced, and every time I want to create a new contact I have to change its contact type before saving it (I know how to convert existing contacts but please tell me if there is another method to automate the process for new contacts).
I don't know what you think of this phone, but I am pretty sure that my new mobile phone won't be related to the LG family.
Cheers all!
i've never experienced data loss with any of the ROMs

You seem to have a good control of your P970, can you expert explain to us how data loss can be a user problem?
Well the best solution is to NOT sync your contacts with Google.
It can either delete new contacts when you restore, or it restores deleted contacts, personally it's crap lol.
Just save them all on your SIM!!! If ever you lose Sim contacts like that. then it's your SIM which is damaged.
I NEVER experienced such problem.
And just to say, Optimus Black is not a crappy phone at all! Mind the way you define it.... Not because you are having contacts problems that it's a crappy phone... It may be an app causing this problem, your SIM card which is damaged, or whatever else.
Yes it's a user problem, we don't know what are your settings after a full wipe and whatever you do wrong or what applications you install that wipes the contact list.
From the first android phone that i had years ago, g1, copied the sim numbers to phone and after adding the google account, google synced it automaticaly and saved all my contacts to google account.
Since then i've added/deleted several contacts, changed several phones (at least 10 with android), and every time i added in the google account to it the contacts where synced.
I think i flashed over 100 different roms, never bricked a phone, even though i used several methods to root and flash recovery, hardest method was on g1 and i think it was the most inteligent one, if any of you had one
Now i'm on zeus 7, so it must be your fault

no need of google syncing or SIM backup.
contacts -> import/export ->export to sd card.
now u have a [email protected] card. just back it up on your computer or online storage and restore as many times u want. no tension.
in case of newer saves, just delete the old vcf and redo the process or just save normally. (the vcf's will be named progressively, 000,001,002...)
hope i helped.
regards,
achyut.
If your coming from somewhere else where you don't have contacts backuped on sd and only on sim.

The contacts should be stored on your google acc.

No need for sarcasm, I just don't find that annoying chosing google when creating a contact, a small fee for the great service i get in return
Thank you all for your participation .
Maybe "crappy" is not the right word to describe a P970 here as I have seen it has many fans (I did not mean to be offensive), and maybe you have a point if you never had any bad experiences with your devices, but what happened with me was annoying!
I would like to assume that I did something wrong with the phone the first three times I lost my contacts (it also happened when it was brand new - no flashes done or ROMs installed), but do you think the following is too wrong?
1. installed a clean Zeus 7 after multiple wipes/restore factory settings and cache wipes (using cwm in a patched V20B software version)
2. the ONLY apps that I installed were :whatsapp, viber, facebook, google translate, french language pack for the keyboard, and google maps
3. randomly I unlocked the phone once to see that my contacts were lost
As simple as that.
My OB sometimes clean my sms box... but i think it's related to OC and UV... when i set for example: [email protected] and [email protected], after some time my smss are gone, and it's almost as plain as the nose on your face (in my case).
I use titanium backup to save them and restore after loosing them, but after seting my cpu to stable config, sms are where they should be.
i've had a small problem with the p970 but that was a google problem.
i had my contacts stored on my google account, but wenever i made a new contact it wasn't stored in google.. so when i flashed a new rom the latest additions to my contacts were gone.
but as most of the people allready said, do not sync your contacts but export them to your sd card. works flawless..
but i never experienced the problems you have, performance is realy good with the great custom roms we have here at xda.
i have my p970 for 6 months or so and i'm very happy with it.
You need to sync your contacts to.
Not just save the on your phone.

SIM cards have relatively limited storage capabilities. They can store a contact and a number in each memory slot (I don't know if there is another piece of information that can be stored) but definitely it can't store two numbers for the same contact name that's why you see "X (home)" and "X(mobile)" for example as two separate entities.
I have the same problems with op - it has erased my contacts randomly 3-4 times in my 16 months of using it. Unrooted - official roms (2.2 and 2.3, various firmwares).
And a couple times sd card was 'destroyed' - losing everything stored there. Of course after reformatting sd card was fine....
I understand it is not a common issue - else more noise would be made around this issue, but something must be wrong with some batches.
A real disappointiment this phone.

It is simply not possible. The form of storing contacts data on SIM is rather ancient but it is industrial standard.
All I can say is the hardware is not at fault for the problems OP has listed in his post, it's a software thing.
Let's say it is possible to switch to a non-Google ROM. say Windows Phone 8 which doesn't sync with Google for its contact, the contacts will likely stay intact.
edit - Of course before anyone start jumping over Windows Phone 8 on our phones, no it's not happening and I'm using an easier example of switching OS to demonstrate that the hardware has nothing to do with software issues.
Hello folks.
I have been a Windows Mobile 6.x user for the past few years, and just made the leap to Windows Phone 8 about a month ago.
I have been happy with the change for the most part, however I am concerned about my backup/restore options.
With Windows Mobile, I used a tool from SPB which archived absolutely everything down to the last byte, packaged it up as an executable written to the memory card, leaving me with confidence that a full restore was possible after a ROM upgrade, device swap, or if something catastrophic happened to my beloved smartphone.
I understand WP does not give developers the same level of control that WM did, so perhaps that level of backup is just not possible? But I am interested in knowing how close I can get.
I have read the official documentation from Microsoft, and understand that much of the mainstream information is backed up automatically to the cloud: app list, photos, contacts, SMS history. That's a great start, but every app I have may store its own data:
Games have progress and high scores, 'Fuel Tracker' remembers and graphs my gas mileage history over time, 'Youtube downloader' pulls down Youtube videos for offline viewing, Nokia Drive+ remembers my favorite locations, Mocha VNC remembers a list of servers that I have saved, and on and on.
None of these apps are covered in the automatic backup to the cloud. So when it comes time to do a hard reset of my phone, I am going to lose all these settings.
I imagine this is not the case with other phone platforms. Prior to Windows Mobile, PalmOS let me backup my PRC and PDB files. Android probably lets users/devs do whatever they want, and I wouldn't be surprised if iPhone had this solved as well.
So my reason for posting comes down to a few questions:
1. Does this lack of *full* backup/restore functionality bother anybody else?
2. Is there already an app or solution that can help with this functionality? I have not looked at the Windows/Windows Phone sync much, but everything from Microsoft seems to pretend that OS-level settings, photos, and music are all anybody needs to backup.
3. Any idea if better backup/restore behavior is on its way? I doubt that Microsoft is going to improve the backup behavior in the OS. But perhaps some innovative entrepreneur like SPB is working to fill this gap?
Any suggestions would be appreciated to help safeguard against losing app data in the future.
Thank you,
Allan
I was actually hoping for an "Application-Storage" backup aswell. In other words - Game-Settings, Saved Games, downloaded videos/maps ...
While restore did actually reinstall all apps fine, this data was completely missing.
I found an existing entry on the feature suggestions page:
http://windowsphone.uservoice.com/f...ons/3387112-expand-device-backup-scope-on-wp8
was curious, wife is switching devices as title says. i dont really have time to sit at sprint or best buy. is there a way i cant back up her data such as calls, contacts, pictures. i always used Samsung and never had a problem. now its a LG and not sure what to do now. the S4 is unrooted and i know i could root in a snap, but dont want to bother with it unless thats the only options. app data would be out of questin since devices are different, correct? but anyways more important would be call logs, pictures, MMS and text, contacts..
thanx in advance..
First off make sure the contacts have been saved to google, not phone memory... When you log into your gmail on the new device it will automatically import your contacts.... As far as messages and call logs, use something like this app from the play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync
It doesn't transfer picture messages so download all of them first and copy all pics to your computer and copy back onto new phone if you like...
You could always use something like dropbox or Google drive to save all pictures and files to "the cloud", allowing you to copy them back without a pc or otg usb flash drive
As far as app data, it can be copied, but both phones need root and use titanium backup.... Copy appropriate files to computer and back onto new device etc... There should be plenty of guides you can google to accomplish everything you want... I even copy ringtones and alarm tones etc to my new devices so I have the same sounds I like for everything because diff manufacturers use diff sounds, for example I use a Verizon exclusive ringtone on my now sprint device, because it's loud and annoying so I can hear it at work. Of course I root all my devices and that makes upgrading my device easy for me to keep all of my data

Was wondering if I'm doing this right or not.
Normally when I upgrade to another Samsung device , power on the new device go through the motions then after done I use Samsung smartswitch. Any better methods?
Cheers

If you can its better to do a new setup like only restore photos and contacts the rest do it manually in most cases setting up a fresh clean runs smoothly than restoring from backup
The only thing that get's backed up for me is my contacts and photos from my Google account. I've always liked doing a fresh install on new phones, not really sure if they run better or not. Little more time to set up but I kind of enjoy it.
I usually use Smart Switch to transfer only messages (SMS/MMS) and apps.
I do not have it bring settings across. Contacts, emails, browser book marks are all sync'ed to my Gmail Account. And Samsung internet browser book marks are also sych'ed to my samsung account.
Then I manually configure my favorite settings, widgets, short cuts, and launcher.
I'll use smartswitch, then use Helium to move apps AND their data over after smartswitch has done it's thing. I have a ton of apps that I need the data to migrate and since we can't root the only way to do that now is Helium. It is slow and clunky compared to Titanium, but at least it works (knock on wood don't want to jinx it), or has in the past with some effort and time.
It takes quite a bit of time (many hours) to get everything from my old phone to a new one. Part of me wishes I hadn't upgraded just so I don't have to go through the process. Oh well.

Why not just use the built in tool the phone maker provided built in? The software you pointed to, probably skims your data and sells it. Their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy are sketchy as heck!!! What info do they reserve the right to share and with whom? It doesn't even give clear definition of that info, and they don't even give a list of who their "3rd party affiliates" are.
Hi all,
I've got a couple of questions regarding the Note9, which I'll be getting this week:
1. What is the best way to migrate everything from my Note4 to the Note9? I've read that there a few ways, what's the best? what do I do with content that isn't backed up like game's progress?
Does Smart Switch, for example, copy everything? Do I need to migrate everything to do with my Google account separately?
2. When using Nova on my Note4 there were a few things that were disabled when changing Samsung's launcher, like attaching Notes to the screen or using the calendar widget.
Does anyone know what we lose, if anything, by changing the launcher on the Note9?
Much appreciated.
I'm having the same problem with the calendar widget; is there a workaround to get the Samsung calendar widget working on GoLauncher?
To answer your first question (although you may not need the answer anymore but maybe other people do): I copied all my files from a Xiaomi to Samsung Note using Samsung's Smart Switch app, available on Google Play. Works well, except that favorites and settings within the apps are not copied to the new phone.
Helium Backup is a good solution for non rooted devices to transfer your apps including all data to a other device. Not all apps but around 95% of your apps you can copy....
If your devices are rooted, you can also use Titanium Backup - thats the best solution but works only with rooted devices.
I always use Titanium, since being rooted.
Not 100% on this but I've read it's better to do a clean install than full transfer, what I mean by this is just backing up through your Google account and redownload all apps and settings. Manually transfer documents, pictures, music etc.
If I were you I'd removed Nova launcher before using smartswitch to transfer. Better still do a fresh install as others have suggested.

Yeah, if you are running the stock Samsung Launcher then Smartswitch is the way to do this. As it litterally moves everything from your old android device to your new phone. It does a much better job if you are migrating from a Samsung device too. I use it when I upgraded from my N910C to my N950N.
correct, Helium Backup transfer also settings and datas from many apps including the application itself (not all apps), thats the reason why I prefere Helium Backup

I know it does but I once had pictures and somehow they became corrupted through Smart Switch, they still transferred alright to the new phone but I deleted them from the old phone and when tried to access them through the new phone they were all corrupted and I lost them, that's why I rather manually save them.
