Contact t-mobile. Pay off the phone if not done yet. The carrier can unlock it.
carrier can request the unlock code from Samsung if they don't already have it, usually takes a week or two

I think first of all you should contact the guy who sold you this phone and he can provide you samsung note8 sim unlock code or some money for getting network unlock code from third party service
If it says "invalid sim card" doesn't really means that is network locked.
first check if this phone hasn't been reported blacklisted here: http://imeipro.info/ and https://www.t-mobile.com/verifyIMEI.aspx
And then check if your phone is actually locked on T-Mobile by doing these steps https://www.unlockunit.com/blog/network-locked-t-mobile-usa/

SM-N950U is Note 8 AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile
SM-N950U1 is note 8 for US Cellular
SM-SM-N950F/DS is dual sim gsm only model
SM-N950F is note 8 for Europe
SM-N950N is note 8 for Korea
SM-N950W is note 8 for Canada
SM-N9508 is note 8for HongKong
SM-N9500 is note 8 for China
If you bought a carrier branded Note 8 from Samsung outright, including those former Note 7 owners who took advantage of their upgrade program - remember that you are eligible to SIM unlock your phone as the phone is not under any contract. I bought an ATT Note 8 from Samsung (former Note 7 user) and I just unlocked my phone so I am now able to use my T-Mobile SIM in the phone as well (and coincidentally I get a better signal at home with T-Mobile than ATT). I had almost forgotten to do this.
Anyway, this doesn't make it as versatile as the unlocked version that Samsung sold since that one supports CDMA and other bands as well whereas my ATT branded one does not support those bands (so while you can insert a Verizon SIM, you won't get any connection to a network other than an emergency connection) and I don't believe it supports one or two of T-Mobile's bands either. However, this is at least a little bit of a reprieve from those of us who really wanted to get the unlocked version but did not want to lose the ability for certain carrier functions - like ATT Wifi Calling, for example, that doesn't work on the unlocked Note 8. At least you'll be able to use SIMs from networks that are compatible with your version of the phone.

it'll work on their respective lte bands with no issues. especially with verizon. both the international and usa versions will work on any gsm/cdma network; as will the verizon variant. the both the exynos and snapdragon cpus have all the radios.
All the Note 8's will work on any carrier. CDMA or GSM. Here is the official list from Samsung website with all supported carriers worldwide:

Once unlocked, all s8, s8+ and Note 8's will work on all carriers. They all have the same bands for CDMA and GSM. They essentially are unlocked models with carrier software. You can even flash the custom ROM once sim unlocked.
Just be aware, if you have activated the McCaffee virus checker that swapping SIM's will also pop up the SIM swap code. It is the code you entered for the virus checker program when it was activated.
Found this out when I swapped out SIM's on my unlocked Note 8, though it is the N950F Exynos version...
Enterering the code will add the SIM to the "trusted SIM list" and you shouldn't have this problem again with those 2 SIM cards...

T-Mobile doesn't use unlock codes. They use a SIM Unlock app installed on the phone. There is an option for temporary unlock, lasting 30 days, and permanent unlock. Both options require an active TMO SIM to run, and the latter requires the phone to be fully paid off.
It sounds like the seller did a temp unlock, not permanent.

Not true. Not all Note 8 models support CDMA, for example. There are also differences in band support. There's a reason there are numerous models, and it's not simply for different carrier bloat . And custom roms require an unlocked bootloader, not sim-unlock. Snapdragons are bootloader locked through (except for the Hong Kong model iirc).

as I know all note8 phones using the same hardware and on some gsm only variants cdma is locked (just need to unlock it)

If you buy the carrier specific version it could be locked. If you buy the unlocked variant it is unlocked. One really needs to read before purchasing big ticket items.

That's not true at all. ALL US Note 8s support and work on CDMA. They are all the exact same hardware, with the same radios, with support for the same bands. As long as it's carrier unlocked it will work on all carriers. The carrier specific firmware simply supporta carrier specific features, such as VoLTE, WiFi calling, MIMO, etc. Though with T-Mobile, VoLTE and WiFi calling are enabled even on the unbranded unlocked firmware.
I'm not sure what radios and bands are supported on the international versions, but for the US model, it supports all of them. And there's only ONE US model. N950U. The N950U1 is the same model, but is running the unbranded unlocked firmware, which can be flashed on any N950U. Cause it's the same exact hardware

Almost correct.
SM-N950U is for ALL Carrier branded Note 8s. So it includes ATT, T-Mo, Verizon, Sprint, US Cellular, and others.
SM-N950U1 is for the factory unlocked, non-branded model.
Though they are both the same exact hardware, and the firmwares are interchangeable.
