Hi all,
Even I have to ask a question now and agian....
I have just purchased this but cannot get the output to goto my tv.
On my old neo i just attached the cable and whatever was ont he display of my phone was shown on my TV. But this is not happening for my T.
I am on my ROM, siyah Kernel. Have I deleted a stock app that is needed? Is there a setting I need to change? (I did go through settings but the only thing I could find involved wifi or bluetooth connections not mhl cables)
Thanks for any help guys
Greg
Humm. I read about this kinda MHL cable. Wehh for sure you ahve to have libhdmi.so and SemcTVlaunher in phone.
Try with stock kernel. If then cabel or phone jack is broken. And check my question

Re: HDMI Output
Do you know if your mhl is a 5 or 7 pin connector? Ours uses 5 pin. If you hook the phones stock charger and hdmi cable into the mhl adapter, does your TV recognize the signal? My TV shows grey for inputs without a signal.
If thats ok, then plug your adapter into the phone. If nothing happens, check your connection app. The app that controls what to do when you plug anything in or get close to a nfc tag. I'm on XperimenT rom, so I think the stock
app was replaced with smart connect.
By default, my wifi turns off and my TV Launcher starts when I hook the mhl in. Managed by smart connect. So maybe your missing the profile for hdmi, or you don't have the connect app or TV launcher app installed.
By the way, this is the one I purchased.

I dont really want to admit to my noobiness about this, but all I needed to do was attach the phone charger to the adapter in the cable and it worked...
I think I will go away and facepalm myself.
Thanks for the help anyway.
So I bought a cable from fleebay which arrived in record time for a HK/China delivery.
Did you need to install anything or copy any apks?
From what I read before I bought the cable, the reason you need the power is due to the MHL spec. It is nothing to do with Sony, it is the way power needs to be provided.
I will try my cable tonight.

I didnt need to add any apk's. I was just being a clown and not adding the power to the adapter.
If you look at the pic of the item i bought, there is a micro usb male socket to plug into the phone and a hdmi male socket to plug into the TV. Also, coming out of the back of the HDMI socket is a female micro usb socket for the male end of the charger to go in.
As soon as I added the power i got the screen to mirror over to the TV
I did not click the link, but from what you describe, it looks like the one I bought, in which case, even if you did not know how it works, have a "free" end should have told you something!

yeah, at least he did, all I've done so far is plug the hdmi end in and realised that the cable length to the power socket is too far away, so will reroute power...
~ just typing "re-routing power" made me feel suck a sci-fi geek...
I'm lucky my sharp tv has a USB input as well so I didn't have to look for another power socket when I setup my tv for mirroring.

Hey everyone. I just bought the Samsung Smart dock. Everything seems fine, but there is one Problem. If i watch a Video in Fullscreen, the control buttons disappear and don't show, if i move the Mouse...the Cursor doesn't show either on my TV, only on my Phone. Anyone can tell me how to fix this Problem? Thanks in advance.
I'm pretty sure if you click on the bottom where the controls are supposed to be they will show up.
That's how I got mine to show up.
Can't hover..you have to actually click on the bottom as if it was already showing.
Edit...I'm pretty sure the pointer shows on mine though...

Now i can guess why this isn't working so well. Im using a Wireless Keyboard+Mouse combination through a stick ( not bluetooth). The Phone doesn't show the Keyboard in the drop down menü at all, but the Keyboard works though. This must be the Reason.
Does anyone know a trick, where i could make my phone think, that a usb keyboard is plugged?
EDIT: Found a trick. I just plugged in an another USB Mouse and the display of the Phone turned off. Now everything works great. Its a waste of a USB slot, but im ok with that...better than buying new Wireless Keyboard and Mouse.
EDIT: Its laggy somehow, if 2 Mouses are connected. I need a way, to modify the USB reciver of the Mouse/Keyboard. Anyone can tell me, how to get access to a USB devices, to modify it?

The lag might be because of the screen turning off. I currently have that issue. When I plug in a wired mouse, the screen on the phone turns off but the output over HDMI gets really laggy. It happens even when you only have the wired mouse connected without any other USB peripherals. I haven't found a workaround for it yet.
The case is... hardware video overlay.
To be more specific:
1) whenever a hw-decoded video is played, it is handled by GPU only (-> only video surface is rendered, no software overlay controls, etc. available via HDMI)
2) you can force software rendering ("composition") by attaching an external USB HID device (mouse/keyboard, but keep in mind that a USB RF receiver for mouse/keyboard does not trigger renderer switch) - both video and overlay controls will be available via HDMI but with a degraded performance ("software rendering")
I do the following: use external mouse, etc. to select a desired video, click 'play' and then disconnect the USB accessory.
Tell me about the smart dock, it looks like it should be charging a spare battery in the back but I didn't read that anywhere in the description... Also you can only use it in portrait mode?? What's up with that? I find it hard to get over these 2 hurdles for $99.

The back of the device has hdmi out, micro usb port for power and 3.5mm jack for audio out to externally powered speakers. Initially it will only work in portrait but you can either use a launcher or you can use the app Ultimate Rotation Control to force the phone into landscape, even on the homescreens. Either option works well. The phone also come with a 2A charger as well. For $99, a keyboard and mouse (logitech k400 is awesome!) a few play store apps and a little time to get everything setup just the way you want, you will have a fully functional mobile computer.
When I disconnect my phone I use the rotation app to go back to auto and my phone functions just the way it normally does. Stupid simple.

video decoding method isn't the only cause of lag.
in desktop mode there is quite a performance drop even when not playing any video files.
you can test this with 3dmark, your score will be average when using screen mirroring, but it will drop by 10% when in desktop mode (single screen)
Has anyone possibly figured out a way to disable or remove the Galaxy Note 2's "desktop mode" switch? I have a USB mouse which I would love to use with it (don't want to spend extra $ on a bluetooth mouse), so I was thinking that the problem could be solved if the automatic detection of the mouse and subsequent switch to "desktop mode" could be disabled somehow. Thoughts?
I've decided to put together a Nexus 7 car install after pricing up an OEM retrofit for my E90 & quickly getting north of £1200 with no guarantees that everything would work as I wanted.
I've used Android devices to provide navigation & audio since getting a HTC Desire many years ago, but I've been caught out a couple of times recently using navigation on long journeys with my HTC One-X completely flattening its battery despite being on charge the whole time!! The last time left me navigation-less in a strange city, in rush hour traffic, with no way to contact anyone.
I've been reading around Nexus 7 car installs today & everything that I would like to do seems to have been done before, but I'd like some ideas for the best way to pull it all togther.
The main use for the Nexus will be to provide navigation & audio. I gather that Timur's kernel - USB ROM contains features which are suited to using the Nexus in a car install - are there any other ROMs I should have a look at?
I would like the install to look as professional as possible but be removable & reversible, so I'm thinking of a mounting it in a SHG-NX2000, & I would prefer to use a single USB connection to the Nexus rather than a USB & 3.5mm so from my googling today I gather I can achieve this with an OTG USB cable & a USB DAC.
I've not used an OTG cable before, but the ones I've seen on ebay seem only to be a couple of inches long - can anyone provide a link to longer one or can I just use an extension cable & stick the OTG cable near the hub? The idea I've got in mind is to run the host OTG cable from the Nexus into a powered USB hub located in the glove box or behind the dash. I would supply the power to the hub from a DC-DC convertor to make sure everything gets the power it needs. Are hubs usually wired to supply power to the host device as well as the connected devices? Are OTG cables available which allow the power to be supplied to the host? If so, I could use one of the ports on the powered hub to supply power to the Nexus via the OTG cable.
I don't have a spare line level input to my stock BMW headunit, but I do have an aux in on a 3.5mm socket which I don't mind re-routing & hard wiring to the output of the DAC - can someone link to a USB DAC best suited to this task?
I would also like to install a reversing camera. There are cameras available which either replace a license plate light, or mount around the license plate - I would prefer to use one of these over a webcam. I had an idea of using an Easycap to connect the license plate cam to the USB hub - has anyone done this? The license plate cams pick up their power from the reversing lights - is there a way of using the fact of the camera powering up to switch the Nexus to auto display the feed from camera when the car is put in to reverse? Taking this idea a step further, has anyone configured a system where if the car is then subsequently taken out of reverse gear the Nexus switches to a forward facing camera either for a fixed amount of time or until reverse gear is re-selected to give you alternating rear/forward views when parking up?
Shopping list so far:
Nexus 7 (1st gen) £119
SHG-NZ2000 £22.39
DC-DC convertor £5.50
10-port powered hub £6.19
Micro USB OTG Host £1.99
E90 License plate light CCD camera £17.00
Easycap £3.37
USB DAC £11.49
Total so far ~£185
Anything I've missed? Better components? Cheaper prices?
Any help or ideas greatly appreciated
I would think the only way for a rear cam to work is to modify it and your tablet ...no usb input... You could try to use the housing of a rear cam and put a web cam it and seal it up good then use that .... That way you'll get a wide veiwing angle ....

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 'no usb input'? I'm talking about connecting the CCD camera via the Easycap to the USB hub which is connected to the Nexus. It is because I don't think I'll be able to reseal the housing well enough that I don't want to use a webcam, plus the CCD cameras are powered when reverse is selected which I'm hoping should make driving an event easier.

not sure if the usb on the back of the dock supports otg or not, cos i wanna connect up reverse camera and dac aswell
I considered doing something similar, but when I looked into it, it would seem that the official dock only charges and passes audio

Hi there,
I was just wondering if you had any success with the camera? I've got a Nexus 7 install and want to wire in my existing Rca cam. I'm sorting out the reverse signal with a joycon exr steering wheel control but I want to know if the easycap thing you linked to earlier worked as a capture device on Android or whether I'd have to go for the UVC grabber in the other link which definitely works but is much more expensive!
Thanks!
Any update on these types of cameras?
I want to do the same thing, except the camera is in the front (not the back).
Any success with the EasyCap? It seems they have bad reviews on amazon, but maybe they work great for how we want to use it.
Also, have you tried using a 4 channel EasyCap? That way we could hook multiple cameras.

AppRadio Unchained Rootless allows full mirroring of your phone from your AppRadio. This means that any app can be controlled from the head unit screen and not just a few that are specially adapted.
AppRadio Unchained Rootless is available from the Play store here: AppRadio Unchained Rootless
The user's manual is available here: User's manual
For this app to work Android 7 or higher is required. As Android 7 only allows to inject complete gestures, a gesture has to be completed first on the head unit before it will be dispatched to the phone. It works similar to record and playback. Suppose you need to do a long press of 2 seconds, first press for 2 seconds, once you lift your finger it will be dispatched and replicated on the phone where it will take 2 seconds as well. It's recommended to only do things that take a short time so there won't be too much delay.
Important
The 'Smartphone setup' on the head unit needs to be set correctly for Android as by default it's configured for Iphone. Go to Settings->System->Input/Output Settings->SmartphoneSetup and set Device to 'Others' and Connection to 'HDMI'. See this video: Smartphone setup
Any other AppRadio related app needs to be uninstalled as this blocks the connection to AppRadio Unchained Rootless.
AppRadio mode requires that your device is connected to the HDMI input of the head unit. Depending on the device this can be done with a MHL / Slimport / Miracast / Chromecast adapter. This app supports automatic connection to wireless screencasting devices. Since Google API doesn't support this directly it is done via the phone's GUI. Note that only the phone's built-in screencasting capabilities can be used.
Because this app may not work for your setup there's an extended trial period of 48 hours. In order to claim this simply request a refund within 48 hours after purchase by emailing the order number to the support email address.
Supported head units: any AppRadio that supports Android AppMode via HDMI.
For example: SPH-DA100, SPH-DA110, SPH-DA210, SPH-DA120, AVH-X8500BHS, AVH-4000NEX, AVH-4100NEX, AVH-4200NEX, AVIC-X850BT, AVIC-X950BH, AVIC-Z150BH, AVIC-6000NEX, AVIC-6100NEX, AVIC-6200NEX, AVIC-7000NEX, AVIC-7100NEX, AVIC-7200NEX, AVIC-8000NEX, AVIC-8100NEX, AVIC-8200NEX
Units that have AppRadio mode via USB (a.k.a. AppRadio One) are not supported.
Android 7 Bluetooth bug
If during connection 'Accept thread error' is displayed this is not because of a bug in the app but due to a bug in Android 7.
It can be fixed by disabling BT background scanning: Go to Settings -> Location, in top right menu click Scanning -> Bluetooth Scanning.
The following features are supported:
- Multitouch
- AppRadio buttons
- GPS data transfer via mock locations (only works with head units that have a GPS receiver)
- Wake lock
- Rotation locker (to put any app in landscape mode)
- Real calibration
- Start on HDMI detection (for use with phones and HDMI adapters)
- Notifications to indicate connection state
- Diagnostics
- Automatic Bluetooth toggle for improved connection
Beta test version
The beta test version has the latest features but can also contain bugs.
You need to become a tester of the AppRadio Unchained Rootless app to be able to get it.
Please apply here: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/mars.area51.arunchainednr
Beta test release notes
0.09
- Fix for black menu text color, now white as it should be.
- SWC commands can now be directed to a target app.
0.08
- Fix for calibration out of range.
- Fix for delay of casting start.

The S8 was confirmed working, the AVH-8500BHS is supported. Only thing I am not sure about is the Samsung wireless dongle but if it doesn't work a recent Miracast like the Actiontec Screenbeam mini 2 or the Microsoft wireless adapter V2 should do the trick.
For the S8 there's also a wired option. Somebody is using this and it says works well:

The video is via the HDMI input of the head unit and touch goes back via Bluetooth. The S7 doesn't support MHL so a wired connection isn't possible. What works is to cast the screen via a Miracast adapter like the Screenbeam Mini 2 or the Microsoft wireless adapter V2.
I am using my S8+ with rockscout and it is working pretty good. It is a little lagged and the screen is in portrait mode as opposed to landscape. What more will this app do. I am willing to buy it but I just want to know what make this better. I am just using a USB-c cable plugged into the back of the Appradio 4 so that might be a limitation at the moment.

I just loaded Appradio Unchained Rootless on my Verizon S8. I'm using the free Nova launcher. I have a Pioneer 4100 NEX, using the cables and HDMI converter that was recommended in another appradio thread (Towabo USB3.1 Type-C to HDMI adapter). The firmware in the Pioneer was just updated to 1.09. The 4100 is installed in a 2012 jeep JK using a PAC canbus adapter and a micro bypass.
Now appradio seems to work, set the input to other-HDMI and then expanded the screen to fit. I can control the phone from the radio BUT everytime I change to appradio, I lose sound from whatever I was using, be it Sirius, HD radio or the SD card. I have a friend that has the same setup but he's on a Dodge RAM and not on a canbus link. He had audio and can then bring up appradio and keeps his selected audio playing.
From the radio end, we are the same firmware, same HDMI adapter, same cables and feeding the adapter from a 2A+ dedicated USB-C cable. The only difference is he has the paid version of Nova Launcher and I have the free version.
I figure it's something I missed. Anyone have any suggestions?
Ok I have the S8+ Now with chromecast - problems

The S8 was confirmed working, the AVH-8500BHS is supported. Only thing I am not sure about is the Samsung wireless dongle but if it doesn't work a recent Miracast like the Actiontec Screenbeam mini 2 or the Microsoft wireless adapter V2 should do the trick.

Here I want to put some screenshots from two YouTube videos about Samsung Dex which shows unlocked (not greyed out) option for WQHD 2560x1440p resolution which gives desired resolution on monitor. Unfortunately, in both videos they using Samsung monitors. This arise question that WQHD resolution is option only for Samsung monitor. I dont know anibody that post screenshot with enabled WQHD resolution on monitors from other vendors.
Is there any solution to get WQHD on other displays which support that resolution or we can say that this question is obsolete and that there is no solution for that problem? On developer.samsung page I saw some runtime options for modifying Dex app including to change resolution to WQHD.
I tested Dex Pad with original HDMI to HDMI cable on Note 8 and get qreyed out option for WQHD (on Sony 55XE8505 4K TV which have no support for MHL). In screen mirroring I get 4k 4096x2160 at 60hz.

I've been getting x1440 in Dexmode on a non-Sam monitor using a non-Sam DeX hookup. If that matters to your test.
Thanks. What is the TV model and non-Sam Dex hookup, and what is the settings on TV? I dont understand where is the problem. Many people reported same problem.
Modified the DEX environment a bit in my custom ROM (swapped 2560x1440 with 3440x1440) and can confirm that works with official dock on the LG 34UC98-W. (So I assume 2560x1440 would)
Only thing not working is HDR and 10-bit color, but I think thats more of a problem with the DEX hardware and how its outputting
Could you let us know how you modified the ROM to enable higher Dex resolutions?

Thanks!! But at the max resolution how does the text look on the lapdock? Sadly, my eyes are not as good as they used to be....
Thanks again for posting! [emoji106]
TrungHTC, can you post the screenshot with checked WQHD option, not FHD. The WQHD option on your screenshot is greyedout which mean that can't be enabled. This is my situation, and still no solution with official Note 8 firmware.
I have an older Samsung 4k monitor, not the QLED one. Using International Exynos version of Note 8. I Just tried 3 different adapters.
AmazonBasics Type-C to HDMI adapter, it only goes upto 1080p, 2560x1440 is greyed out. I also get message that I should use genuine Samsung adapter or somethin.
LC-dolica USB C hub. Without power going to it, it does not work, not even a USB drive. But when I gave it power, it let me pick 2560x1440! I returned it though since I'm not too keen about having it plugged into the power.. plus the port wont fit in my Note 8 case.
Samsung Type-C to HDMI adapter. 2560x1440 option is greyed out again! However I dont see any "should use genuine Samsung adapter" message. But still.. no 2k option, I might as well just get the cheaper AmazonBasics adapter.
Edit*: I wonder if this cable will work? Samsung DeX Cable USB Type-C to HDMI. Anyone want to try it out?
If there's some file modification we can do on phone that lets us pick 2k option, I'm willing to root it too.

I read reports from others being able to use something else than a DeX pad. I was not able to get that resolution with other than the DeX pad. I'm using a viewsonic right now. I can use HDMI, Displayport and Mini display port to achieve the resolution with a macbook pro. I can use a USB-C to HDMI and a USB-C to DP/mini DP no problem. The same cables, on the Note 9 only get the FHD option. I know the cables and monitor are capable since they were in use seconds before, and that the Note 9 is also capable, since I am using it in WQHD right now. So the only explanation I can see, if Samsung test for someting when plugged in, and so far only the DeX pad met those requirements. I can't even change the charge on the DeX pad. I have a multi charger on my desk, I could use a thunderbolt 3 cable to power it. It supports QC 3.0, and 9v to 5v. But not Adaptive Fast Charge that uses the same voltage/amp. Weird.
Anyhow, it's the only config that worked for me. I would like to know if there's anything more portable that support higher resolution for when I travel. Otherwise, no big deal. I have been using the HP LapDock at FHD when I travel, and since the screen is only 11", FHD does not look bad.
My 2 cents.
bump. the link given is gone
Thanks guys
I am trying Note 8 (Pie of September) with Dell D6000 USB-C Dock
1) I confirm WQHD 1440p is greyd out for the External Monitor when i go to DEX Settings
2) I also confirm the D6000 Dock works with HP Laptop and same screen and cables at 1440p, so just not the right dock
3) I try now the same setup with the older DEX Station and will report later... I love that Ethernet on the DEX Station
